Netgear firewall conflict?

I'm running into a problem sending a file via iChat over a wireless network.
I have a Netgear WGR614v6 wireless router connected to the cable modem. I have an Airport Extreme connected to one of the ports on the Netgear. I connect to the internet on my Powerbook via the Airport Extreme.
When I try to receive a file, the file transfer times out and I get the following error message "An AIM error has occurred. Unable to talk directly to your buddy." The computer sending the file gets this message "AIM error: Communications with the AIM proxy timed out. Try again."
If I switch over and connect wirelessly to the Netgear router, the file arrives without a problem. If I'm conected via the Airport Extreme AND I turn off the SPI firewall on the Netgear router, the file transfers without a problem. It's only when I try to receive the file while connected to the Airport Extreme AND the Netgear firewall is on.

  • Firewall conflict with the start of default domain

    Hey,Sirs,
    I have a problem here .
I can't start the "default domain" from "startup-programs-sun-j2ee" while my firewall keeps start.I must close the firewall if i want to use the domain from startup. However, i can start the domain in command line while the firewall keeps start.:(
Many appreciates for any suggestions or explanations.

my firewall and sdk1.4 are both in the c: directory. That implies you are using Windows. Windows XP maybe?
You should probably tell what firewall you are using.

  • Screenrecycler / firewall conflict

i discovered tonight that if my firewall is active (on MBP) it wont allow connection with my PB through screenrecycler/VNC.
i have tried allowing screenrecycler and VNC in the advanced tab of the security prefs, but still no go... any ideas?

well thats pretty crap about the support! i only bought it this year
anyway, i can't find "port forwarding", but i went into "virtual server" in the "advanced" tab. under "apps" i have a list of "available rules" and "applied rules"... i have now applied the rule (VNC) and will now go to sleep and reset the modem in the morning and we will see how we go.

  • Pulling my hair out...  Firewall conflicts.

Every time I start up the firewall via the Server Admin in Lion Server, I am unable to do the simplest things.  When the firewall is turned off, none of these issues exist.  Duh.
With the firewall off, I can mount any drives to my macbook air from my mac mini.  Both machines are on the same network, same subnet.  I can VNC in, no issues.  That basic functionality goes away when I turn the firewall ON.  Maybe I'm missing something, but I have VNC and AFP turned on, but still can't get in.  Guess I need to read up, but I figured that if I have the firewall turned on, but allow those ports, shouldn't entry be granted?

Ditto Linc Davis. If your server is behind your NAT router, enabling the firewall is pointless.
I once had a Leopard server that was exposed to the public internet so I did have to mess around with the firewall. If you have to use the firewall, you're gonna have to tweak it. You can't just enable it and have everything work perfectly. You're going to have to tweak and create rules that allowy everything in your enviroment to work properly.

  • ITunes 6.0.5 & ZoneAlarm firewall conflicts??

I'm using windows XP Pro SP2, with ZoneAlarm 6.5.722.
Just upgraded from iTunes 4.(something) to 6.0.5.20. Now all of a sudden, I can't access the music store. When I shut down ZoneAlarm, it's fine. I tried deleting iTunes from the program list in ZoneAlarm, thinking that when I restarted iTunes it would re-regiser with ZA. That didn't happen, can't even manually add iTunes to the ZA program list now.
Anyone know what the deal is here?!

Just answered my own question - the problem is actually with ZoneAlarm and not with iTunes.
My ZoneAlarm (allowed programs) database became corrupted. Additional symptoms included my Norton AV LiveUpdate had been disabled for a while as well. ZoneAlarm was just blocking access from these programs (usually after installing an upgrade version of the application), and not giving any message or alerts when blocking it.
    Here's the fix:
Delete the ZoneAlarm database by going to C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs, and deleting (or renaming) IAMDB.RDB & BACKUP.RDB. You have to boot in safe mode to do this. Then restart normally, and when ZoneAlarm fires up again, you'll have to re-acknowledge all of the programs asking for internet access as if it were a fresh install of ZoneAlarm.

  • HT4914 I am adding files to Match and the program keeps crashing. No firewall conflict.Any idea?indows 7

I am trying to add music files to ITunes Match but it keeps crashing ITune frequently. Any suggestions?

    Many thanks.
With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:
Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
(If there's a SpeedBit LSP showing up in Autoruns, it's usually best to just uninstall your SpeedBit Video Accelerator.)

  • WRT54G connecting to Netgear fvs338 Firewall

Has anyone connected a WRT54G behind a Netgear Firewall.  I can't seem to get the Lynksys to connect to the Netgear Firewall.  I don't need the router but I do need the wireless.  I have to use the Netgear FVS for work.  Any help appreciated!!!

Okay… configure the linksys router according IP range of firewall, if firewall is running on e.g. 192.168.1.1 and change LAN IP of router to 192.168.1.2 and disable the DHCP server and save the settings, make LAN to LAN connection between firewall and router and power cycle the n/w check whether it works or not…

  • Adding NetGear Prosafe 8-port Gigabit VPN Firewall to existing TimeCapsule Network

I need some help and direction with this one...
    What I currently have setup and what I am doing on a day to day is as follows;
Cox Cable Broadband > ISP Cable Model > Time Capsule >Airport Express v1 + Airport Express v2 (Both extending wireless). I have a Dell/Windows Server setup as a Media Server and also have it setup to accept  VPN connection as well. I remote into my network quite a bit as well as VPN into it quite a bit, I RDP into the Dell Server as well as an iMAC and MacBook Pro from time to time. I have PS3, Xbox360, Apple TV 1stG and 2ndG, 2011iMac, 2011MacBookPro, iPAD3 and various other wireless clients. I would really like to add as much security as I possibly can and thought adding a Hardware firewall would be a good step.
So I Purchased a NetGear ProSafe 8-port Gigabit VPN Firewall that I would install on my network and have everything behind that. The problem is I have no idea how to set it up for the best protection and performance. Only thing I found online is putting it behind my TC which would then leave my Wireless Clients outside the Firewall? I'm usually pretty good with this stuff, but this time I'm just completely confused and not even sure if I need this or if it's completely useles. I do like the TimeCapsule also running 2 Airport Express (v1 & v2) to extend my wireless network, but I'm not sure if it's as secure as it could be.
If this was a good step buying a hardware firewall and from what I've read the model I bought (FVS318G) is pretty good, it's also solving a problem I have had with my network is needed Ethernet access. Time Capsule only has 3 ports so I figured this would also solve the lack of Ethernet ports as well.
I'm thinking I would go from Modem > NetGear(DHCP Enabled) > Time Capsule (Somehow turn DHCP/Router off) > all my network clients.
Can Anyone offer advice?? How I should configure this? Is it pointless? Return the Netgear Firewall? Buy a different hardware firewall???
*BTW* I have software security covered, just want to add hardware as well.
Any help/suggestions would be extremely helpful!
    Thank you!

I am not sure who made the suggestion for the vpn router to be behind the TC.. they do that sometimes for connection to vpn for downloading TV shows etc.. but your proposed network layout is correct.
I'm thinking I would go from Modem > NetGear(DHCP Enabled) > Time Capsule (Somehow turn DHCP/Router off) > all my network clients.
All correct.. The Netgear has to be the one and only router.. otherwise the VPN will not give you access to the rest of the network behind the NAT.
So easy peasy.. bridge the TC.. use the 5.6 utility if LIon.. you will need to download and install it..
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
    Lion v6 is a toy..
Go to manual setup, internet tab. Connection sharing.. off, bridge mode. update the TC.. voila you are done.
You should probably reboot the whole network. As the expresses will need to now get IP from the netgear not the TC. Tell us if you run into trouble, but everything should work, although it may require a reset and redo setup of the TC and express to get everything smooth again.
Next issue.. hardware and software firewalls.. sometimes produces the great wall of china.. very secure... oh so secure nothing gets in.. or out. I do not know the Netgear.. but I would start with whatever the lowest preset is for the firewall. And see if you have issues.
And of course then do the vpn setup.. which is a lot of fun.. (read strong sarcasm). But once you establish the tunnel should then give you access to the whole network.. you will not need to use RDP unless you need to actually take over a computer.
VPN firewall is the RIGHT WAY.. albeit it can be painful in the initial stages.

  • Ipod/Netgear conflict?

I just bought a new 30g video. Everything worked fine for about a week, then I installed 'Netgear WG311t wireless pci adapter'. Now when I plug my Ipod in, my desktop says 'this device has malfunctioned' and wont open Itunes. I have tried to 5 R's but none work,(funny thing is I cant 'restore' because my PC doesnt recognize the device) I then plugged it into my friends PC with Itunes and it recognizes an Ipod right away. Therefore, I think I have narrowed it down to Netgear/Ipod conflict.....ANY FEEDBACK?

Seems strange.  What is the exact wording of the error message.

  • Bandwidth error, error - 22, sky broadband netgear dg834

    Hi everyone,
I'm tearing my hair out with iChat issues. The most frustrating thing is that it has been working but has now chosen to stop completely. My set up is that I am on a MBP with 6 Meg broadband via Netgear DG834, I did make the mistake of installing the free McAfee software that came with Sky boradband (doofus) but have cleaned that out of the mac now.
I keep getting 'insufficient bandwidth' and 'error - 22' when I try to audio or video anyone.
I have trawled around the various sites but have drawn a blank having tried more or less every piece of advice.
I have changed the ports on my iChat, amended the bandwidth on Quicktime and iChat and have checked whether I can connect on another network (I can). I've also bypassed the wireless with an ethernet cable to no avail.
What I don't want to do is assign a static IP to my mac (although I guess that this might fix the problem) for two reasons:
    1. I take it away from home and I assume that I will need to turn DCHP on to connect
    2. most importantly, there are several macs that use the connection at home and we will all need static IPs to connect?
    3. and if more macs connect, will I need to name them on the netgear firewall rules or could I specify a range?
So, does anyone have any thoughts on the above and specifically, whether there's a way of connecting via DHCP?
What's most frustrating is that every other set up I have had, iChat works out of the box. Also, a friend has same MBP and Sky Netgear router and it works flawlessly.
Many thanks in advance for your help.
    Paul

    Hi,
    Paul has Chatted with me.
We have tried the normal things I suggest for the WAN page.
His is slightly different from the Standard but can Check the Disable DOS and the Enable Respond to Ping on WAN port.
I was getting Error 8 constantly
He was getting a mixture of Error 4 and Error 8
This seems strange as my G4 is only connected by Ethernet and there is no other DHCP server or any other sever on my network and I do not have Parallels (In fact it is a G4)
He tried the Sagem he was sent (it is the wireless that does not work) and had his Slingbox disconnected.
As he is on Tiger Little Snitch seemed to suggest port 5060 may be a problem (SIP ports and VoIP blocking) but there seems to be no evidence that Sky do this.
He hopes to resolve this with a call to Sky

We set up an OS X server in a remote facility and are connecting to it over a VPN connection (Netgear Firewall).
Everything works fine, there's only one annoying issue: if I want to copy a file from a mounted AFP share (share1) to another mounted AFP share (share2) - both of them residing on the same server - it seems to me that the files are being copied first to my local client and then back to the server again - instead of being copied directly from and to the server...
Is there anything I can do about this issue or am I wrong? Is this a so called "feature" of the Finder itself?
Thanks for any suggestions and regards
    Roman

Thanks for your thoughts about higher vs. lower latency networking - I totally agree. It might be a quite uncommon setup; as the server is being "housed" in a datacenter with quite tough restrictions: not only do they charge us for the power consumption, but also for the traffic being generated - which is 250 GB a month. They're providing an uplink with 10mbps (guaranteed), burstable to 100mbits.
Anyway, we're interested in keeping traffic low - hard to do if we cannot let end users do "common" tasks like moving files from one folder to another (of course, its a sharepoint - but they don't care).
What I'm looking for? Well, I think it will take hours to find out which part of the setup (AFP implementation of the server, AFP on the local machines, either of them on a particular version, the Finder in general...) actually might be responsible for this behavior. And maybe there's a "solution" (if you agree that this is actually a problem" buried somewhere

  • Firefox will not open at all, and wen I try to uninstall it tell me that Firefox must be closed to proceed with te uninstall even though it is not open.

I click on Firefox and notihing happens. I have tried to uninstall the program so that I can reinstall it, but wen I try that, it tells me
"Firefox must be closed to proceed with the uninstall. Please close Firefox to continue."
But the program is not running. It won't let me open it either. I have college lectures that can only be viewed on Firefox, so I am not able to do my homework. Please help.

This may be a number of things, but conflict is most common, so here are some suggestions that may help you get to the bottom of the matter:
Be sure that a firewall is not blocking the startup of Mozilla. Some firewalls will come with "self defense" mechanisms for spyware/malware, but these programs can also isolate useful programs as well. Norton 360, Comodo Internet Security, Zone Alarm, AVG antivirus and McAffee Internet Security Suite incorperate these methods among several others.
Basic solution: To get around this type of blocking you will have to disable the self defense mechanism in your firewall or add an exception for firefox.exe.
In depth instruction for Windows users:
''''''This may be hard to follow, because the posting tool does not recognize spaces, but here goes...THIS IS NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED.''''''
1)Open the mozilla browser. When nothing happens...go to next step.
2)hold CTRL, ALT and the DELETE key together. In XP you will get an immediate task manager window...Go to next step. Under Vista or Windows 7 you will get a login screen that has a START THE TASKMANAGER button at the bottom. You will push this button then go to the next step.
3)In the Windows Task Manager click the Processes tab.
4)Run down the list and find all occurrences of firefox.exe
5)right click each firefox.exe and from the drop down list choose End Process Tree then answer YES or OK to the prompt box.
Firefox is now closed...Now we can determine the issue.
6)Start firefox in safemode by clicking on START or the WINDOWS ORB to open the START MENU.
    7)Choose ALL PROGRAMS or PROGRAMS
8)Find the MOZILLA FIREFOX folder and click on it
    9)Choose Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode).
10)When the prompt box appears check the boxes next to the following:
    a)Disable all add-ons
    b)Reset toolbars and Controls
c)Reset all user prefrences to Firefox defaults
11)Click on the CONTINUE IN SAFE MODE BUTTON at the bottom.
If firefox opens, you have a plug-in that is causing your issue. If it does not then repeat steps 1-5 and then move on to step 12.
12)After all instances of firefox.exe have been ended, go to START and choose CONTROL PANEL from the start menu right hand side. XP users go to step 13...Vista users choose SWITCH TO CLASSIC VIEW on the left hand side then go to step 13...Windows 7 users choose USE LARGE ICONS from the drop down list at the upper right hand side then go to step 13.
13)Double click the WINDOWS FIREWALL icon (around the bottom of the list) and check to see if it is ENABLED. If it is not enabled, Enable it. Windows 7 and Vista users: Answer YES to enable this option ANYWAY, if you get a prompt warning of dual firewall conflicts then move on to step 14.
14)Find your security center icon in the taskbar, Usually next to the clock. Right-Click the icon and choose EXIT, DISABLE (Temporarily), or CLOSE.
15)Once you are sure that your Security Suite/Antivirus software is disabled, then Start Firefox in regular mode.
If firefox opens, you have a firewall or defense conflict and need to get your documentation to find out how to allow EXCEPTIONS to the software or internet access list. You can use firefox with these settings in the meantime, but you will not have antivirus protection. Free antivirus-only programs are available at the following locations:
    -----http://antivirus.comodo.com/antivirus.php
    -----http://free.avg.com
    -----http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
NOTE: If you choose to use an antivirus only program in conjunction with windows firewall, you must remove any other antivirus programs from your computer and restart the system BEFORE you install the new antivirus software or you WILL have problems with your system SPEED and FUNCTIONALITY. Do so by going to START then choose CONTROL PANEL then choose ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS in XP or PROGRAMS AND SETTINGS in Vista or Windows 7 then find you program in the list. Right click it and Choose UNINSTALL or REMOVE. Be sure to RESTART the system BEFORE you choose to install the new software.
If NONE of the above has worked, then you very likely have a corrupted installation or your system may be comprimised by RootKIT or Trojan infection.
Please download and complete a full scan with the tool below. REMOVE ANYTHING IT FINDS then restart the system and remove and reinstall firefox then attempt to open it again:

Good Luck to all. I hope that his has been helpful.

  • Vector Enumeration Error Message when using smc

    Hi,
Whenever I click on the System Information icon in smc, I get a small window that says "vector enumeration". No other error message/error code is shown. I did a clean uninstall and re install of the OS, but the issue still persists.
    Any suggestions?
    Regards,
    Pritesh Ugrankar

    Pritech:
I had the same symptom (platform is an HP Pavilion a200n with 1GB RAM and 2.4Ghz Celeron) and was in the prrocess of posting this reply to see if you had any luck getting past your issue. Just for jollies, I again tried the System Information pick and mine now works!
The only changes I have effected (since it was not working) were setting up a network printer (to my NetGear Firewall Router w/printer port) and getting networking working - which I had to do first. I am dual-homed and determined that Solaris10 was not detecting - has no native support for- the NetGear FA311 NIC I have wired to my router. I found driver binaries at http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrym3/taiyodo/eng/index.htm. Followed the included README, installed the driver, and I no longer get the vector enumeration error.
You may not need all the convolutions I did, but I am posting them just in case. Feels like maybe SMC just wanted networking correctly set up ???

  • How to access my RAW files for my Nikon camera

I have purchased a Nikon camera and I would like to be able to access RAW files.  I read somewhere yesterday my Raw file is not coorect.  If I recall it needs to be 6.3 and is at level 6.1.  I am running Win7

After several hours of frustration, I may have it resolved, but I haven't
had time to check everything out.
I am working with Photoshop Elements 9 loading Edit, selecting updates
which was where I ran into my first problem.  I don't recall the exact
message, but something about maybe a firewall conflict.   I took an
alternate route and found RAW file 7.1,  downloaded it and got the message
I needed to update Adobe Manager.  Took two tries, but finally got it
Manager updated.  Next I extracted and attempted to install 7.1.  Got
message didn't apply to my software.  More research, find RAW 6.5 and the
only way to install it was through update in Photoshop Element.  To my
surprise no problem with "firewall" and it listed I needed two upgrades:
both Raw 6.5 and Photoshope Element 9.3.  The update actually started to
work so I guess the New Manager resolved the "firewall" problem.
Upon completion, I got a two errors messages
    Messages I received:
    Photoshop Camera Raw 6.5 Update
There was an error installing this update. Please quit and try again later.
    Error Code: U44M1I210
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 9.0.3 Update
There was an error installing this update. Please quit and try again later.
    Error Code: U44M1P2003
Error detail page suggested I reboot my compute which I did.   I went back
to update and the only choice listed was Elements 9.3.  After this update,
I only got one message:  same error #:  U44M1P2003.
I have not pursued this error further, but hope to do so.  Any suggestions
    would be appreciated.
BUT, I DID LOAD A RAW FILE!  YEA!
