Netgear MA111 Wireless USB Adaptor - Linux Enterprise V5

I have installed Linux Enterprise V5 on my laptop (Sony VAIO). Does any one know how I can get my Netgear MA111 USB Adaptor to work with this OS? I am fairly new to linux.
Mahomed Suria

Hi Tommy,
Since my last post , I have installed linux-wlan-ng-0.2.8 and followed the following installation instructions :
run Configure
make
make all
make install
This got me a start up script in /etc/rc.d/init.d/wlan, but when I run it gives me following error:
Starting WLAN Devices: FATAL Module p80211 not found
Failed to load p80211.o
So at present I am trying to work out what that means!!!
In answer to your question , the command /sbin/lsusb -v gives :
idVendor 0x0846 Netgear, Inc
idProduct 0x4110 MA111 WiFi (v1)
bDeviceClass 0 (Defined at interface level)

With Mac OS X 10.3 or higher, a number of USB Wi-Fi adapters would be possible to use. However, for an earlier operating system, a wireless Ethernet bridge (such as the examples below) can be a better (and sometimes the only) option. A wireless Ethernet bridge does not normally require special drivers, and can thus be used with almost any Ethernet-equipped computer.

My system is Mac OS X v.10.6.8.
I used to work on my 3000 photos with GIMP on a P.C, but since I had a breakdown, I would like to carry on on my Mac as soon as possible.
Figuring out unaided a new OS after a breakdown is the best prescription for another breakdown.
Before going back to editing your photos, I suggest you need to familiarise yourself with your new OS. Get a book (eg, David Pogue's "Missing Manual…") -- now, that Lion's been out and about for some time, you can probably get the Snow Leopard (aka Mac OS X v10.6) edition at a discount. Take the time to read it and understand it, and you'll spare yourself a mountain of frustration. There are enough similarities between Mac OS X and Windows to fool you into believing almost everything works the same way, when, of course, it doesn't -- many similarities are only skin-deep.
Once you've done that, you'll be in a better position to install and use GIMP or look for alternatives.
where do I find the exact version (in french)
For French issues, you are probably better off checking the forums on MacBidouille or MacGeneration.

  • Recommend a wireless USB adaptor that is Mac compatible?

As I really need my MacBook to see wifi networks and not being able to wait to see if 10.5.3 fixes up the airport problems I was wondering if anyone has used and can recommend a wireless USB adaptor?
    Thanks for any help

I haven't used it, but it is sold by a Mac-centric vendor that I trust, OWC. If they sell it, it probably works well with Macs.

  • [solved] Wireless USB adaptor says its something its not?

So I have a TP-Link TL-WN321G USB adaptor I just purchased.  I was looking up chipset and drivers for it but when I do lsusb it comes back with
ID 148f:2070 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2070 Wireless Adapter
This seems strange to me as everywhere I lookup this adaptor online it says its a RT2571 or RT73 drivers, yet my computer is saying RT2070 for whatever reason?
Anyone have any ideas as to why this is or does mine somehow have a different chipset?
    Thanks
Edit: Stupid enough to forget the adaptor model

I got that adaptor expecting that chipset for a certain purpose  but thats why I was confused when it didn't operate as expected and then when I checked I was like what the heck is this? It would appear I have a different revision using a different chipset now so I'll have to return it and look into getting another one then.

  • Which wireless USB adaptor with PowerMac G4

I don't have Airport & just got WiFi hotspot - was wondering what usb wireless adaptor would work with a G4

    Hello,
These work far better than an Airport card...

And even better with a 10' USB extension cable...

  • Can't Get Netgear MA111 to Work

My dad gave me his PowerBook G3 (Lombard) a few days ago because he hasn't used it and I'm in need of a laptop for school. We're waiting for an Airport card to come in the mail, but meanwhile I've been trying to get online using a Netgear MA111 Wireless USB Adapter.
I can't get it to work for the LIFE of me. My dad says he has a driver somewhere, but hasn't been able to find it. He said it was on the laptop before we nuked the hard drive (gee, that's nice).
Has anyone found a work around? I've tried several drivers that people have claimed to work with theirs, but I don't seem to have the same luck. Step by step instructions would definitely be helpful, too.
    Thanks!

    Just an update:
I ended up not being able to locate a workaround for the Netgear USB dongle, but my dad was able to find a Lucent WaveLAN Silver PCMCIA card. I have installed WirelessDriver (from sourceforge), and I'm getting a green light that says I am connected, but when I try to open a Safari window, I get an error that the "server cannot be found". Here's the details:
    PowerBook G3 Lombard 400MHz 10.3.9
    IP: 10.0.1.223
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Router:
    DNS: 10.0.1.1
    Any advice?

  • Linux USB adaptors

I'm switching to Linux Mint from Windows XP as it is going out of support next week.
The current USB adaptor (NetGear WP111) isn't supported on Linux.
What USB adaptors are supported by both Linux Mint and BT Home Hub 3?
Are there any that work out of the box?
Anything I should watch out for when doing the switch?

The BT Homehub doesn't (need to) "support" USB wireless adaptors. As long as the wireless device is working properly when connected to the host computer, the HH neither knows nor cares what type of device it is.
As for which USB devices will work with Mint, I suggest having a look for hardware compatability on their website.
in the past, USB wireless networking could be problematic under Linux, often necessitating all manner of faffing around with ndiswrapper and Windows drivers. If push comes to shove, you could always go down that route, but my own experience with modern Linux distributions is that most mainstream stuff tends to work out of the box.
If you do decide on a new adaptor, then Ralink chipsets have long been a favourite as they provide GPL Linux drivers.

  • Wireless USB Network Adaptor for Mac OS X 10.8

I'm sure this has been asked before and I'm sorry in advance if it has, I looked and didn't see anything.
I'm running VMware Fusion with Backtrack Linux. I'm a major at UNCC and my major is Software and Information Systems, so I'm trying to teach my self some of the fundamentals. I've learned that I need a wireless usb network adaptor to get backtrack working correctly, but seem to be having a really difficult time finding a good one because I'm on a mac. Here is the info (I think!) if I copied the wrong info, let me know and I'll look again:
Card Type:          AirPort Extreme  (0x14E4, 0xD6)
    Firmware Version:          Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.106.98.81.22)
I was looking at some of the Alfa Network Adaptors, but do not think they are compatible with Broadcom. If they are then I am more lost/confused than I thought I was. Is there anybody here that is extremely knowledgeable on the subject and can offer some suggestions or point me in the right direction? Also, may clarify some of this stuff. I'm new to the field, so I apologize again. Thanks in advance.

The version required for 10.8 is called iWork 09, its is no longer available from Apple.
    There are plenty on ebay.

  • WRT54GC router with Netgear MA111 USB Wifi Adapter

    Hi all,
bought a router this morning and managed to get it to work with all the inbuilt wifi on laptops. Except on using the Netgear MA111 usb. It seems to get the ip 169... instead of the default 192.168.1.xxx.
I tried to assign static ip but does not work. Tried using the netgear software and also tried using windows to manage it and neither worked.
It works with a cable ie wired and only wifi did not work.
Any idea/solution would be much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Roi

Now that you have the correct IP and DNS, can you ping a website or a public IP?Ping yahoo.com and 216.109.112.135.

  • Jumping gun? Netgear N300 Wireless ADSL2+ modem/router

    Hi,
I'm probably jumping the gun here but I've got a Verizon Actiontec GT704WG modem/router and have been disapointed in the last few months by spotty wireless and internet connectivity when nothing else in my house has changed.  In addition, I need to make a non-network-ready external HD a network drive so either have to have a NAS adapter (incredibly difficult to find at a local store) and I'm awaiting information on whether or not I have to format (again) my already FAT32 file system drive for an adapter to recognize the drive or whether or not the adapter will work without re-formatting my drive.  The work around is the Netgear N300 Wireless ADSL2+ modem router because it will allow me to attach the non-network ready drive without an additional NAS adapter.
However, after reading all the problems that people have with third-party modem/routers and Verizon DSL I'm a little concerned about trying to hook this up as a solution.  So I have some questions:
    1. Do I have to put the Actiontec GT704WG into bridge mode as Verizon recommends or can I get rid of the Actiontec altogether and just use the new modem/router?
    2.  I have no idea if I have ADSL+ service with Verizon.  Assume I can call and find out or get the info from my account page.  But if I do not have that service, will the new modem/router work with basic ADSL service that Verizon provides (ok, that's my really dumb question)?
    3.  If it's better to just stick with the Verizon modem/router and get a NAS adapter does anyone have a recommendation on a reasonably priced adapter?  I don't want a NAS enclosure as I'm not really interested in breaking my external drive and removing the guts so I'd prefer a stand-alone adapter.
    4.  If I can get rid of the Actiontec altogether, can someone provide some assistance for the proper settings to get me setup without too much fiddling?  I'm so sick of spending hours trying to troubleshoot computer issues!
I have an older PC wired into the Actiontec, a network printer attached to the Actiontec, and am running windows XP pro on the PC and have a laptop that is running windows 7.  Evil Empire Microsoft has made the lovely choice to make it difficult sometimes for the two OS to communicate and I'm tired of leaving the PC on all the time so that I can use my external drive (if Win7 cooperates) as a network drive through the PC.  I'd rather have it as a real network drive operating independently of the PC and point my iTunes, word processing, and database programs to the network drive rather than trying to get them to run through the PC into the external drive.
I wish Verizon would offer more choices on modem/routers, especially ones that offer you the option to add a usb storage device as a network asset!
Thanks for any help!  I know I'm jumping the gun a bit, but I'd like to return the new modem/router ASAP if it's not going to do what I need without tons of hassle.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Since the Netgear you have is a DSL modem, there is no need to use the ActionTec. Disconnect it from the line and keep it around as a spare modem should you ever need it for troubleshooting purposes. Also, even though the modem you are buying is marketed as an ADSL2+ modem, the technology is specced to be backwards compatible with traditional ADSL. The ActionTec you currently have is an ADSL2+ modem itself, so that should back up that statement enough. The only thing you need to make sure you verify before switching the ActionTec out for the Netgear is what authentication mode the ActionTec is using. This can be set to either PPPoE or DHCP (shows as Routed Bridge mode) and should show up on the main status page when you visit the ActionTec's web inteface. If you're using PPPoE, you should have no issues getting the Netgear to work. If you're using DHCP, you will need to either close the MAC address of the ActionTec into the Netgear, or leave the modem overnight before you are able to obtain an IP address.
Otherwise the Netgear depends on how you decide to set it up. If you set it up through the Web Interface (http://192.168.1.1/ for Netgears, normally), you need to make sure the DSL Virtual Circuit is set to use 0/35, VPI of 0, VCI of 35. The modem should auto-detect this on first boot. Additionally, if you're using PPPoE you'd need to use your Verizon Username and Password to connect the modem. If you set it up using the Setup CD, it should do all of that heavy lifting.
ReadySHARE (what you're looking to set up with the External Hard Drive) uses the same Windows File and Sharing setup, however it does it using Samba shares, FTP and HTTP since the router runs Linux. The reliability you see might remain the same, but I suppose it's one of those things you need to wait and see how it works once the router is set up. Just remember, the speeds to the drive will not be as fast as going through a PC with better hardware under the hood.

  • Connecting to netgear WG111v2 wireless network

My daughter has come home from college with her Macbook Pro 17/2.4CTO which she bought in September. At home we have a Windows Vista PC, running Netgear WG111v2 wireless network. The Mac can see the name of the network, but can't connect to it. We are using the following settings:
    Default IP: 192.168.0.1
    Username admin
    password password
    Channel 6
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Joe Perry [email protected]

My ISP is TalkTalk. My router is the one they reccommend on http://www.talktalk.co.uk/talktalk/servlet/gben-server-PageServer?article=MAIN.U K.TALKTALK.STATIC.BROADBAND.ACCESSORIES.ITEM_2142991
described as:"Netgear Wireless Network Starter Kit
Everything you need to go wireless. Combines ADSL2+ modem router with a USB Adaptor to create a wireless network. Both operate at speeds of 54 Mb/s. Fully compatible with TalkTalk and AOL broadband connections. Also includes a microfilter to allow you to go online while on the phone."
The precise model of the modem is Netgear DG834G/DG834GB
The wireless router is indeed a USB type, with the model being WG111v2
The PC I am running it on is a new Dell Inspiron 531 Desktop, with 2Gb of RAM, running Vista Home Premium version 6.0. I am running Internet Explorer.
    Any other information please ask

  • Can I Show Time Connected When Using Netgear DG834 Wireless Router ?

When I had an old SpeedTouch USB Modem I could see the time I had been connected to the internet from a readout in the menu along the top of the monitor.
Is there a way of displaying or ascertaining this information using the Netgear DG834 wireless router?
I have discovered that by opening the Router Satus and clicking on "Connected Status" I can get a window displaying this info - but is there a quicker "automatic" way of doing it?
    Ian.

    Hi Ian,
    Interesting one…
When you connect via a USB modem the computer is 'doing' the connecting using the modem so the computer has the 'time connected' status available locally. In the case of a router it is connected to the internet irrespective of the computer's status; on, off, sleep, or even, connected to the router. The only way you're going to get the info is from the router itself and, unless it has a setting whereby it will automatically 'inform' the computer of its connected time, I think you're going to have to carry on as you are.
I don't know that particular Netgear but used to have a different one until a thunderstorm fried it. I don't remember it having such a setting. My current Belkin certainly hasn't.
I'm quite interested to know why you want this info. Are you on some kind of PAYG tariff?

  • Netgear PCI Wireless Card in a Power Mac G4

I have a Netgear PCI Wireless Card MA311 and I'm trying to make it work in my Power Mac G4. Does anyone know of any drivers I can use or any way I can get online with it? An alternate option is the Linksys Wireless-B USB adapter (ver.2.8) that I have around here somewhere.

Generally speaking, if you are planning on buying a PCI wireless card, do make sure that it is Mac compatible. Mac drivers for such cards or for USB wireless adapters can often be difficult or impossible to find.
Another option could be a wireless Ethernet bridge (also known as a gaming adapter) connected to the Ethernet port. These devices (examples include Belkin F5D7330, D-Link DWL-G810, D-Link DWL-G820, Linksys WET54G, Linksys WGA600N and Netgear WGE111) do not normally require special driver software, and can be used under almost any operating system. WPA security may or may not be supported for a certain unit, so study the specifications (a firmware update can solve this in some cases).
