Netgear Powerline 500 Nano Issues

Hello,
I'm trying to extend my wireless network using 2 Apple Airport Extremes (AE) connected via the Netgear Powerline 500 Nano.  When I plug in the ethernet cable from the remote Netgear Nano to the remote Airport Extreme (plugged into the WAN port on the remote AE), my internet connection drops and neither AE can be viewed using the AirPort Utility.  In essence, my entire network dies.
What could be causing this?  I am not sure how to set up the remote AE - I am guessing I should set up a roaming network but the Apple Support article is not updated on how to do this with the latest AirPort Utility software.
There is another article I found with this problem, but there didn't seem to be an answer on how to fix this.
Thanks!

I assume that your "main" AirPort Extreme is functioning normally here.
It makes sense to setup things simply first and verify that everything is working, then add the powerline adapters to see if they are causing the problems.
Temporarily, move the remote AirPort Extreme close to the main AirPort Extreme
First, perform a "hard reset" on the remote AirPort Extreme by holding in the reset button on the back of the remote AirPort Extreme for 9-10 seconds, then release. Allow a full minute for the remote AirPort Extreme to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Connect a spare Ethernet cable (that you know is working) from one of the LAN ports on the main AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the remote AirPort Extreme.
Close AirPort Utiliy if it is open
Click the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the Macs screen and look for a listing of New AirPort Base Station. Just below that, click on the AirPort Extreme.
AirPort Utility will open automatically and take a minute or two to analyze your network and then announce that the network will be extended.
Enter the name for the AirPort Extreme that you want to use and click Next
Wait another minute or two while AirPort Utility configures the remote AirPort Extreme.
When you see the Setup Complete message appear, click Done.
You should have green light on the remote AirPort Extreme at this time indicating that it is working. So, both AirPorts are working correctly now.
Now it is time to move the remote AirPort Extreme by to the location that you want and connect the powerline adapters and start up the remote AirPort Extreme again and test the network.
Post back on your results.

  • Can I use Netgear powerline range extender with Actiontec router M1424WR-D?

We have been using FIOS internet happily with an Actiontec router (M1424WR-D) since 2008, but we have a 'dead zone' in a remote part of our home. I am attempting to install a Netgear Powerline AV 200 Wireless N-Extender kit in the dead zone room, but have not been successful. If I give a unique SSID to the extender, and do not set any encryption, I am able to have wireless connection in the room, but having unprotected wireless connection is unacceptable to me. If I use the same SSID for extender and Actiontec router, and use the same encryption key for the extender as is used on the Actiontec router, then I no longer have wireless connection in the room. I hope someone can provide some help in understanding what it is I'm doing wrong in setting up this powerline extender. Should the extender have the same SSID and encryption key? Should it be a different one? Thanks for any help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Great news! At last I finally have been able to get a Netgear Powerline AV200 Wireless-N Extender Kit to provide wifi in the 'dead zone' in our house, and I was able to secure the network with an encryption key which I set up wirelessly, instead of relying on the 'wired' security option offered by the kit (a push-button on the side of the extender box). None of the phone techs at Netgear were able to figure out why we could not get the kit to work properly to begin with, and I finally gave up on the phone techs.
For anyone interested in using this product and who needs to set it up with a non-Netgear router, or a router that does not have a WPS button on it, please be aware that the resource CD in the box may be out of date. You will need to go to Netgear's website and download the Powerline Utility software for your device directly from the website. You will need to supply your product serial number in order to get the download. It is important to have this up-to-date software. I discovered that the up-to-date software downloaded from Netgear functioned more smoothly and allowed me to set up my encryption effortlessly. After forcing a factory reset on the extender and removing the device IP addresses associated with the initial unsuccessful attempt to create a secure network, I was able to set up the extender and secure it with absolutely no problem. The up-to-date software seemed to be the critical factor. The product seems to be working really well now and so far we are happy with it.
A word of caution when dealing with Netgear's phone techs. On some occasions when I phoned into Netgear my case was farmed out to a company called i-Yogi. I had a disturbing experience with one of the techs at i-Yogi. One of the i-Yogi techs said he could help me to set up encryption on my network using the AV200 extender, but that he needed first to gain remote access to my laptop. He also wanted access to another laptop in our house in addition to the one I was working from. This seemed odd and I refused to allow access to the second laptop. After gaining remote access he noted that I was using Norton 360 and he claimed that it was not working with my XP operating system and attempted to sell me a copy of McAfee security software at a reduced rate. He became very pushy about this. I refused to engage in this purchase and insisted that he return to the task of troubleshooting my encryption issue. At this point he still had not once attended to the configuration of the extender settings at all, but even so he refused to assist me, saying that it was not his problem that my network was not secured. It was not a good experience, and I believe he had a totally different agenda than dealing with my technical issue.

  • Time Capsule + Netgear Powerline Adapter + Airport Express

Any help on this issue will be much appreciated!
I'm attempting to improve my network stability through the use of Netgear's powerline adapters.  The configuration I have (or I should say want to work) is as follows:
    1. Time Capsule as main router connected to modem.  TC is running both a 2.4GHz and 5 GHz network under name#1
    2. Wired connection to Netgear Powerline Adapter #1
    3. Wired connection from Netgear Powerline Adapter #2 to Airport Express
    4. Airport Express is running a 2.4 GHz network under name#2
The connection directly comping from adapter #2 is excellent so I know the powerline adapters are working.  I currently have the express configured to create its own network under name#2 and operate in bridge mode with an ethernet connection.  When viewed in the Airport Utitlity the AEX has a valid IP address from the TC and has a green light.  However, when any devices attempt to connect they cannot retrieve a valid IP.  I did get the setup to behave one time, but it appeared as soon as the laptop which connected successfully closed the connection it could not re-initiate it.  Its almost like the AEX isn't allowing IP addresses to get assigned to its wireless clients.
I have attempted to both extend the TC wireless network through the ethernet connection as well as this current configuration where the AEX is running its own, but I haven't had any yet.  Not to mention constant reboots.

Can you check the configuration again on the AirPort Express?
Open AirPort Utility - Select the  AirPort Express - Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the TC network
No check mark is needed next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11 b/g compatible)
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Same exact setting as the TC
Wireless Password = Same password as the TC network
    Confirm Password
Click the Internet icon, then click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save setings and allow 40-45 seconds for the Express to restart
Then power off the entire network except you do not need to power of the Ethernet adapters
Start the modem first and let it run a minute by itself
Start the TC the same way
    Start the AirPort Express
Continue starting devices one at a time until the network is back up
Test the network and report on your results

  • Time Capsule and Netgear Powerline

I have a 2TB Time capsule and need to extend my network (wired) through HomePlugs.  I have had the Netgear Powerline recommended but have noted in the blurb that they are 'not Mac compatible'.
Will they work with my TC and is it simply just a case of plugging them in and they work or is there anything else I need to do settings wise on the TC?
If these will not work can anyone recommend otheres that do and also walk me through the settings I will need to change 9in very simple steps as I am a bit thick ).
Thanks in advance for any help.

Everything works. Follow directions for extending your wireless network at:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259
    Notes:
I first connected the Time Capsule directly to the AirPort Exteme to avoid any powerline networking issues.  This allowed both the time capsule and airport extreme to show up in the AirPort Utility program.
Ensure that in the AirPort Extreme's wireless settings, "Allow this network to be extended" is enabled/checked before you modify the Time Capsule's settings; the "allow... extended" checkbox might not be visible if you are not directly connected as a client to the AirPort Extreme (it is not visible after setup when you are a client of the time capsule extender).
The Time Capsule network setup is easiest if you follow the dialogs instead of doing it manually.
I now have cable modem->ABEX->Netgear HomePlug-> Netgear XAV1004 switch-> Time Capsule->extended wireless network->laptop.  The powerline adapter signal is running from a new house addition built in 1999 through a sub-panel circuit breaker to a main circuit breaker out through 1940s-era wiring, and everything works perfectly, including Time Machine backups from machines on both sides of the powerline adapters.
@LaPastenague: I haven't detected any ports blocked by my Netgear powerline adapter, nor could I find any port blocking topics via an internet search.  I have never installed any of the Netgear management software, so my powerline adapters are not running any encryption... maybe encryption comms cause the issue you raised?  I really doubt the Netgear PowerLine adapters block any host-specific ports because the adapters are working at the physical and data-link layers which are below the port assignments in the transport layer of the OSI model.

  • I just purchased Apple TV AND AIRPORT EXPRESS. I am questioning if  I need it when I already have a Netgear Powerline AV 200 Adapter Kit XAVB2001. Does the Airport Express do the same thing?

I just purchased Apple TV AND AIRPORT EXPRESS. I am questioning if  I need it when I already have a Netgear Powerline AV 200 Adapter Kit XAVB2001. Does the Airport Express do the same thing?

Thank you so much.  Any specifics I should know about prior to connecting? The goal is to watch  Netflix from my iPad or iPhone 5 on my tv (located in different room from where Comcast internet modem is hard wired to main computer in house).  Movies would depend on wireless transmission to a smart tv not connected to modem.

  • Linksys and NetGear Powerline Adapters

I am wanting to improve my powerline adapters and before I purchase I want to make sure if the Linksys Homeplug AV2 Powerline Kit (PLEK500)  and the NetGear Powerline 500Mpbs 4-Port Network Adapter Kit (XAVB5004)  can be used on with WRT610n router? The Powerlines will be in two different level locations in my home.

Hi, Cowboybutch. The PLEK500 will work with WRT610N as long as you will connect the adapter to the same circuit breaker. I found an article regarding this adapter that might help you get to know more about this device. • Airport Extreme with Netgear Powerline 200 to use Airport Express on other side of house

I currently have my Airport Extreme set up on one side of my house.  I have an Airport Express that I want to set up via a Netgear Powerline 200 adaptor on the other side of the house.
When I plug in and connect the ethernet cable to the Netgear Powerline adaptor from the Extreme I see 2 green lights.  When I plug in the other Powerline adaptor and then plug into my Macbook Pro, I can't connect to the internet via ethernet from the powerline.
I figured I would ensure that I am getting a signal before confirguring the Express.
Any reason why I wouldn't be able to plug in a device to get an internet connect directly from the Powerline?
Any recommendations for setting up the Powerline?

When I plug in the other Powerline adaptor and then plug into my Macbook Pro, I can't connect to the internet via ethernet from the powerline.
Powerline performance simply cannot be predicted in advance of any installation.
Remember that the products are designed to work on the same electrical circuit and any change to another circuit can and will introduce phase shifts in the signal, not to mention significant loss of signal strength and speed....despite what the advertising or salesguy might claim.
I have had one brand work well trying to get a signal to a location a few rooms away, while another brand will not work in the same installation. Yet, the same brand that did not work well in my home worked fine in a neighbor's home when we tested there.
As a test, locate the problem powerline adapter somewhere in the middle of the house to see if you can get a reliable connection  when you check the signal at that location.. If it is OK, then move the adapter a bit further away from the main AirPort Extreme  and test again. You get the idea.
Try a few different rooms as well to see if one might work better than another.
You may likely have to accept a compromise locationf for the AirPort Express and hope that it will provide enough signal coverarge for the other end of the house.
I figured I would ensure that I am getting a signal before confirguring the Express.
    Good plan there.
Any reason why I wouldn't be able to plug in a device to get an internet connect directly from the Powerline?
I think that we have given you some ideas already. In most cases, there is little that you can do other than move the powerline products closer together, or simply experiment with different locations to see one electrical circuit works better than another through the main electrical panel.
Sometimes a different brand will miraculously work when another won't.
The bottom line....as we said initially.....it is not possible to predict how well.....or if.....powerline products will work in any given installation. You won't know if the products will do what you want in your home until you try them in your home.

  • Airport extreme and Netgear powerline extender problem.

II setup a Netgear Powerline Extender/Adapter on my airport extreme network. Followed all the instructions to get the extender/adapter to see each other but when i finally plug the Adapter via ethernet into my airport extreme, i lose internet connection and airport utility no longer can see my Extreme which i use as the base station. What am i doing wrong?

If you verify that the LAN ports are all working on the AirPort Extreme, the next troubleshooting step would go as follows:
Plug both power line adapters (PLA) into the AC sockets
Connect your computer using an Ethernet cable to the "remote" PLA
Connect an Ethernet cable from the PLA near the AirPort Extreme to one of the LAN ports on the Extreme
Can you get a good Internet connetion on your laptop at the "remote" PLA end?
If yes, then we have verified that the connection is good through the "remote" PLA.
What device to you plan to connect to the "remote" PLA?
If you cannot get a good Internet connection at the "remote" PLA end on your laptop, try another Ethernet cable just in case. If that does not help, there is likely a problem with one (or both) of the PLA devices...since the Ethernet signal is not being delivered to the "remote" PLA.

  • Audiobooks On The 500 Nano

I was thinking of buying a Nano just for audiobooks..was wondering if anyone knew...since it's not in the specifications...about how many audiobooks or hours, would fit on a 500 Nano...if you only put audiobooks on the Nano? Thank You!

My audiobooks, in format 4 from Audible.com, seem to range from 3 to 15MB per hour of book. Another poster in this thread said more like 50MB per hour of book. So it really does depend on the type of encoding you use, the book in question, and so on. But suffice it to say that even on the high end you should be able to get 40 hours of books on the 2GB model, and possible well over 100. In other words, lots and lots of books, since the books I have range from 5 hours to 12 hours each.
I listen to audio books during my commute, so I think you'll do just fine with the Nano.

  • Netgear Powerline and iTunes Streaming

I am using 2 Netgear XAV101 to conect computers throughout my house. I wish to stream iTunes from my iMac in my office that houses my iTunes library to my laptop in the family room to stream the iTunes library. This works fine over wireless (though it is intermittent thus using powerline modules) but when I switch to Powerline by turning off the Airport card on the laptop the streaming computer library disappears on the laptop. How can I get Powerline to see iTunes and pass the stream through. Other than that Powerline works perfectly. An Airport base station is acting as my router to the Powerline module.

Thank you for any information or assistance you can provide.
what Tracy said about the sharing option in iTunes. make sure on both machines it looks like this (except perhaps for the password)
how about +home sharing+ ? is that enabled on both machines ? is iTunes on both authorized to the same account ?

  • Extend wireless network with multiple airport express and netgear powerline

I currently have the following network configuration:
    1. Using ATT u-verse (2-wire 3800HGV-B "modem") to internet
    2. Disabled the u-verse modem wireless router, and have connected an Apple Time Capsule wireless router (on a DMZ)
    3. Have four Netgear XAVB5001 powerline adapters connected to the time capsule (for our iMac desktops and the Apple TV)
    4. Have an Airport Express wirelessly connected to the time capsule to extend range (for our iPhones and iPad)
All this is currently working. What I would like to do is the following, keeping 1-3 above the same:
    4. Connect the airport express to the time capsule via Netgear XAVB5101 powerline adapter (instead of wirelessly connecting to the time capsule as it is today) and use it to extend the wireless range of the time capsule
    5. Add ANOTHER airport express to the time capsule via powerline adapter (and extend the wireless range elsewhere in the house).
Does anyone have any experience with this kind of setup and can assure that it would work? (I'm trying to decide whether to spring for a couple more powerline adapters and another airport express)
    Thanks in advance!
    Dave

I had a VERY similar problem:  I was trying to extend my wireless network using a hardwired ethernet connection from Airport Extreme to my Time Capsule.  Every time I plugged in the wire to the TC, everything disappeared.  Unplugged, and boom.  Came back.
    Here's how I solved it:
Go into Airport Utility and select the unit you are trying to use as a wireless extender and choose to edit it.  Then, on the wireless tab select CREATE a wireless network.  But, give it the exact same name and password.  This is completely counter-intuitive.  You would think to choose EXTEND, but this would be wrong.  Next choose the network tab.  And, select Router mode to Bridge (off).
By choosing the same name and password, your phone, laptop, etc. will think it's on the same network and move seamlessly from one to the other.
See if this fixes your issue.  Fixed mine instantly.  AND, it only took 3 painstaking hours of checking ethernet connections and rewiring jacks, etc. to figure it out.  LOL

  • Windows Vista iPod Nano Issues

I just bought an iPod Nano 8GB today and when I tried to connect it to my Windows Vista System after installing iTunes, I get an "Add new Hardware" wizard asking me to install the driver for the iPod which obviously doesn't work.
Of course, I've tried the 5Rs several times and none of them work. Asking here is my last resort.
I know there are currently issues with Vista but clearly this isn't one of those listed under the article on the site. So I was wondering if this is only specific to my PC.

for some advanced techniques for dealing with that message, see:

but if you'd prefer to try some quicker and dirtier techniques, you could try:
    reboot and repair
reboot the PC (very important), and then do a repair install of itunes. go to your Add/Remove programs, select itunes, click "change/remove" and select "repair".
... if no joy with that:
reinstall the itunes drivers for importing and burning
you can find them here. if you're on a 32-bit system, use the first link on the page:

  • ITunes 11/iPod Nano issues with syncing

I just updated to iTunes 11 after recently getting a new 16GB Nano. I wasn't having any trouble syncing my iPod until I downloaded the new iTunes. Now  it keeps getting stuck on the second track that it's attempting to sync (track 2 of 345, e.g.)

every since I bought a windows 8 computer, having same issue; if I stop; restart it will get one more track, but I have over 20000 tracks; I even manually converted all 22000 tracks from mp3 to m4a and still didn't fix.  it would take days or months to sync 22000 songs manually this way.  If you search online, there are free alternatives to itunes now to sync your ipod and I think I may be leaving itunes if the issue isn't resolved in next week or two. I am seeing the official response from apple seems to be they have no intention at this time to make itunes compatible with windows 8.

  • Nano issues with Vista

I just purchased a new computer with Windows Vista 64-bit. Itunes loads fine and recognizes all my music. When I plug in my Nano my computer knows its an iPod but it freezes itunes. I also am not able to open my computer to see if it shows as a removable drive. It will not allow me to eject the ipod. As soon as I unplug the ipod everything goes back to working fine. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes. I have reset my ipod and put it into disc mode. None of these steps have worked. Any ideas? Thank you.

They may have the latest driver from their manufacturer, but they probably don't have the latest intel reference driver. The 2915abg isn't the worst intel chipset I've had experience with (that title goes to the 2200bg) but it's by far not the best (that title goes to the 3945... I haven't had the chance to mess with the .n chipset). All intel wireless chipsets seem to have issues that are resolved by the latest driver. I'd check out this site:
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=1847&OSFullName=Windows+Vista*+Enterprise%2C+32-bit+version&lang=eng&strOSs=155&submit=Go%21
and see if there is a newer reference driver they can try. I've had similar experiences with any Intel Centrino based laptop (high latency, low signal, etc) that are *always* resolved by updating to the newest driver. Best of luck!
