Netgear router, iPad 2 speed problems

Does anyone have a netgear wpn824v2 router and have problems with Internet speed? I get 250k on my ipad2 but 1m speed from a pc from the same router. I updated my router firmware but still get 1/4 the speed that my pc gets. Brought iPad to work and set it next to another ipad and both connected at 16m with no problems. Was told by my tech guys to open my wallet and buy a new router (5 years old). Any ideas?

Hi. I currently have BT broadband Home Hub 3. I use it to connect to my laptop, my Iphone and my Ipad2. The connection speeds of my laptop and Iphone are fine but the Ipad connection is very poor. Browsing the net is not a problem its when i try to use Youtube, BBC Iplayer or ITV player that there is a problem. Basically anything with video streams. The stream plays for a few seconds and then stops. If i watch videos using my laptop or iphone it is fine. I know there is not a problem with the Ipad itself as i have tried it on other peoples broadband, ie, Virgin or other BT and it works fine. I have used the speedtest app to check connectivity and its constant on the Iphone and Laptop but when i check the Ipad it dips up and down or drops completely. Any help with this is much appreciated as it stopping me getting full use from my Ipad.
Thanks
Martin
Based on the symptoms you describe it may be that the Ipad is connecting to a different network in your vicinity eg a BTFon hotspot.  I suggest you check what network you are connecting to as my wife's Ipad is prone to using a different network to the one she is expecting.

  • My iMac and Netgear Router from Sky Broadband are having problems

Hi, I've got a fair amount of knowledge in these area's. I not long switched to Sky Broadband a couple of weeks ago. The problem lies with the connection to the router that they supply for their service, a Netgear DG834GT. The problem is that my connection to the 802.11g network is extremely slow.
My iMac, even tested in the same room shows 20-30% signal. This compared 2 a Windows Vista laptop at 5bars and top speed downstairs, and two PC's (XP) either end of the house with the same normal signal quality.
Contacting Sky Broadband, they assume that the fault is with the iMac and are state that they can't really help because I am not using a wireless adapter supplied by them (If it's even compatible).
Does anyone know the solution to this? I've heard of many other users with similar problems on different Mac's but no-one seems to have a fix.
Also running bootcamp, ive found my signal strenth to me maximum, but my speed to still remain at 22Mb/s peak, and roughly 1-2Mb/s when browsing the internet.
Lastly I have WPA-PSK enabled, and i've tried adjusting wireless channels without having any luck improving the signal. I would be gratefull if anyone knew any ways to fix this problem, thanks

Buy the Wireless N adapter from Apple and install it. Even though the only specified effect is adding the N router capability, it fixes the problem you mentioned (worked like a charm for my friend).

  • Ipad will not connect netgear router, even with encryption disabled

Evening everyone, I own a first generation iPad which I got at the beginning of this year, and up until 2 days ago, everything was working fine.
I have Netgear router issued by Sky which I have owned for a few years and I have owned an iPhone 3GS and I am now onto my iPhone 4, along with 2nd generation apple TV alongside my iPad.
On tuesday, my iPad stopped connecting to the internet over wifi. I have entered the password for the network, I have restored my iPad, and I have also disabled the encryption and still it will not connect.
Now last night, I manually entered details under the Static section near DHCP and suddenly it worked. I have also been to visit the Apple store at the Trafford Centre this evening and simply got told it must be something to do with my router. yet I am at a loss as to why my iPhone 4 works with no problems, as Steve Jobs says, "it just works" yet my iPad doesnt.
Can anyone help me on this one????

Thank you very much, I have now reset the router after logging in and seeing all my other devices working fine. Everything is now working, just totally surprises me that my iPhone, laptop, my mums laptop, my apple tv box would all still connect and work no problem at all.
Can anyone answer as to why this sort of things happen with routers????? My line of thinking would be that if one product can't connect, then surely the others wouldn't be able to either???. I may be totally way off beam, but this is an area where I have little knowledge.

  • IPad and Netgear router

I am using wpa-psk security and a dynamic isp, DHCP is on and I have a MAC address. I have hard reset and rebooted the router.
i know not what the problem is either, any more help appreciated before I resort too a 'genius' and the Mac store!
I am not sure what you mean by "I have a MAC address". Routers can be configured to only allow access to devices whose MAC address is in a list of permissable MAC addresses configured in the router. If you have this setup and your iPad's MAC address has not been placed in the router list then you will not be able to connect.

Problem connecting wirelessly from iMac to NETGEAR router, get invalid password message with WPA and WPA-2 encryption in place but if I remove them, so no security, can connect without a problem. Help!!

Thank you for your suggestion but I have already had a couple of phone sessions with NETGEAR support and they don't see any problems with the router settings etc. They referred me to Apple support, who helped me discover that it is possible to communicate with the router but only if I turn off the encryption/security software, which I don't want to do. The frustrating thing is that I can connect wirelessly from a laptop running Windows 7 and two Anroid smart phones, with WPA-2 in place, without a problem. Do you have any other ideas?

  • New Netgear Router slowed broadband speed

    Hi,
Was wondering if anyone had experienced this before- I decided to "upgrade" my router from my old BT home hub that has numerous cracks/wounds on it from bouncing off my floor over the years to a new Netgear N300 wireless router. I was able to install it ok and have checked all the connection settings incl for wireless use which seem to be correct and as recommended. I live a long way from exchange and my usual speed is **bleep** anyway (0.5mps) but with the new netgear router it can now take several minutes just to load a webpage (ie it is un-usable) and this was when it is directly connected to my computer. It would be intended to be used wirelessly but speeds where even worse when I tried it wirelessly. I am preparing to take it back to store but wondered if there was a reason for it as thankfully by old BT hub still works but it cant go on forever!!!

can you post any adsl stats from your netgear - used to be router status and then statistics at the bottom but may have chnaged in new netgear

  • Time Capsule router speed problem

    Hi,
First of all sorry for my english!
A few days ago I started having speed problem with internet.
I use a Time Capsule 2Go as router and I notify recently a lost of speed when I download a movie via my appleTV.  I never have this kind of problem.
My normal speed is about 14Mbits/sec. so when I rent a movie and I have to wait 5 hours before been able to watch it, it's not normal.
I contact my internet supplier/distributor and he checkout with my neighborhood to compare their speed with mine, and I was the only one to have speed problem.
Than he suggest me to run a ''speed data test'' on their website, and my speed was around 0.75Mbits/sec.
To be sure it was my router and not their modem he ask me to plug internet directly in my iMac and run the test again.
Well I was return at a normal speed, that is to say, 14Mbits/sec.
So he told me the problem was my router and not their modem.
So I restart it and everything came back as normal.  But today it was return to a very low speed.
I restart it again and it still slow.
    My question :
Is it really my TC the problem and what is the solution?  Buy a new one?
I dont know which generation it is.  Maybe the serial No. can help. C0PHK08GDM73
    Thank you

My computer don't stop asking me to update my TC to the early version.  How can I stop that?
Open AirPort Utility and then click on the AirPort Utility menu, then click on Preferences
Remove the check mark in the box next to "Check for updates when opening......"

  • Problems connecting my iMac to a Netgear router USB printer

    Hi,
First time for this sort of thing... here goes...
I have an iMac and a Macbook Pro connected to a Netgear wireless router. The router has a HP Color Laserjet 1600 connected to it via USB.
I knew that the HP 1600 was not initially compatible with Macs but wanted to see if I could save throwing it away, and found the open source CUPS driver and associated files here: http://macosx.com/forums/hardware-peripherals/302806-hp-lazer-1600-printer-drive r-mac.html
Installation of the drivers went fine.
Then I went to system preferences > Print & Fax > + and added the printer with the following settings:
    Protocol: LPD
Address: 192.168.0.1 (the netgear router IP address)
Print Using: HP Color Laserjet Foomatic/foo2hp (recommended)
The printer seemed to be discovered successfully. However when I attempt to send a document to the printer it returns the message:
"Attempting to connect to host 192.168.0.1 for printer
Network host '192.168.0.1' is busy; will retry in 30 seconds..."
    - and hangs there indefinitely.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Check the documentation for the Netgear router. Since you are using LPD, there is most likely a specific queue name you need to enter to access the USB port. This would explain the error, as you are connecting to the print server (router) but the spool file cannot find its way to the correct port, hence the busy message.

  • AirPort Utility can't find Netgear router OR new AirPort Express

    Hello,
I couldn't find my situation fully addressed in older posts, so I'm posting one myself.
I am trying to EXTEND my current network with a newly purchased AirPort Express. My equipment is as follows:
Comcast modem connected via ethernet cable to...
    Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 R7000 dual-band router
One three-year-old Mac Mini running Lion
One newer MacBook Pro running Mavericks
Two iPhone 4S, latest software updated as of Nov. 2014
Two-year-old iPad, latest software updated as of Nov. 2014
Newly purchased AirPort Express as of Nov. 2014
We have a large house with an office at the extreme end resulting in a week signal, so I need to extend my network. The Netgear router sends a strong signal otherwise, and ALL devices are working properly and are fully connected to the WIFI network.
    So here is the problem:
I've tried many, many times to connect the APE using AP Utility with only two successful connections, but these connections were to "Join Existing Network" not to extend that network, but I selected this option as it seemed closest to what I want to do since "extension" of network was not an option. Then I see that I can edit the APE within AP Utility. I've done so, resetting the unit as a network extender, and the two times I tried this I sat waiting for five minutes for the thing to update only to get an error message. At this junction I could do nothing but remove the APE in AP Utility by "forgetting" it. No other options were available that I could see.
Now, the two times I've done the above, were two times within 20+ attempts to get AirPort Utility to even see the darn thing. I've tried placing the APE near the Netgear router, moderately close (other side of room) and even at the far end of the house, and neither the APE or the Netgear router were ever found in the AP Utility save the two incidences mentioned above. I've scoured the net, rechecked all connections and performed all troubleshooting procedures I can find to no avail. All I get is a flashing amber light and no connection
A: Why won't AirPort Utility find my Netgear Router?
B: Why won't AirPort utility find my AirPort Express?
C: Why, on the two occasions the AP Utility did find the APE, did it not give me the option anywhere to set it up as an EXTENDER to the current network?
D: Is there any other way to add the APE to my network as desired without using AP Utility? (I do have the Negear Genie app, but I don't see options for adding a device for network extension so far)
I'm at wits end. Can anyone help?
Oh, and I've tried using AP Utility on both Macs listed above with the same results.
    Thanks for your help!

A: Why won't AirPort Utility find my Netgear Router?
AirPort Utility works only with an Apple router, as does the utility for a Netgear work only with a Netgear router.
B: Why won't AirPort utility find my AirPort Express?
Any of 3-4 common reasons. We'll have to work on troubleshooting that.
C: Why, on the two occasions the AP Utility did find the APE, did it not give me the option anywhere to set it up as an EXTENDER to the current network?
Apple designed the wireless "extend" feature on their routers to only work with other Apple routers.
D: Is there any other way to add the APE to my network as desired without using AP Utility?
    No
Not sure how you want to proceed at this point. It might be possible to use the AirPort Express to extend the Netgear network if you connect it using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection back to the Netgear router.
If you cannot run the Ethernet cable, your best bet by far is to use another Netgear extender or repeater, which would likely be compatible with your Netgear router.

  • Airport extreme 5.8 ghz with a netgear router at 2.4 ghz?

We will be getting a new imac which I would like to run wirelessly as part of a home system with two other ethernet connected macs and a wireless PC laptop. We expect to get substantial interference and would like to get the airport extreme and run it at 5.8 ghz to avoid home problems. Our current netgear, which works fine with the laptop, runs on the 2.4 spectrum. Is it possible to connect the netgear to the airport extreme and continue to use the wireless part of the netgear router/switch for the pc laptop (and avoid purchase of a new wireless card).. and have the imac at the 802.11n speed and the higher bandwidth because of the extreme router? Hope I explained this correctly. thanks.

bkenney1, Welcome to the discussion area!
Yes it is possible to operate the Netgear at 2.4 GHz while operating the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) at 5 GHz.
This is a 'dual band' network. It is discussed in the Apple documentation and in several threads in this area.

  • Moved House - Broadband not working - Netgear rout...

    Hi,
I moved home over the weekend, and got a text from BT this morning stating that the broadband is now connected.
Have set up everything as it was in my old house, and broadband cannot be connected.
The Netgear router has all lights ok, except the internet one, which is red.
My laptop and ipad can both see the home network, so the router is available, but it seems that it cannot resolve the DNS.
I have not changed any settings, as I was told to just 'plug and play'  -it would all work as it does now.
Two calls to BT help have been less than helpful, both instructing me that the router is broken which is rubbish.
Does anyone know what the problem could be?
    thanks
    Kris

    Hello,
Internet light red on Netgear routers can mean that CHAP authentication has failed. What have you got for the ADSL username or password? According to this document:
    http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/c/346,401,407,409/a_id/644
You should use the BT username that they originally sent you:
You also require your BT Broadband username. This was given to you at the time you orderd broadband and is usually made up of [email protected] where 'your' equals your first name and 'name' equals your surname, for example [email protected] BT Broadband does not require that you enter a password to connect, but some routers won't connect to the Internet without a password. If this is the case, enter the word BT.
    Hope this helps,

  • Warning : Netgear router RP614

Problem solved that was caused soley by the RP614
I had replaced an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) with a Netgear RP614 because of the somewhat limited router capabilities of the AEBS. Apart from server access problems that could be solved with an update to v.6.1 (which Netgear have not yet posted on their website) our office experienced a DRAMATIC slowdown in the playback of Real Audio videos. The connection speed was max 300 kbps (we are on 1.5 Mbps broadband) and the videos would start to load, play back for 10 secs, stop, load for 10 secs, play again for 10 secs etc.
The problem is now resolved. I removed the RP 614 and replaced it with the former AEBS and we now have Real Audio connection speeds of 512 kbps, videos play smoothly again in excellent quality.
This makes it very clear that the Netgear router is the device responsible for dramatically slowing down our Internet connection.
I would prefer to return that RP614 router that has only wasted my precious business time.
I am still waiting for Netgear's response.
On the other hand I would be very grateful for a feedback from Apple users who can recommend a router that works well in an Apple wired/wireless network.
    Regards,
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)
      Mac OS X (10.3.7)

Thank you so much for your response.  I called Netgear (they were no help).  So, I read everything that I could find.  Finally, I did a search for the iPods WiFi requirements.  After all of the reading, I changed my security type.  I was using WEP.  That was the default setting, when I set up the router.  WEP wasn't compatable with the iPod.  Just as soon as I changed it & put my passphrase in, the iPod joined & has stayed connected.  The only problem was,  the 3 Tivo & kid's computer lost their connection.  I went in & ran the network set-up on each. They all work great on it, now.  It was such a simple solution.  It only took me 12 hours to figure it out.  I hope this helps someone else who is struggling with a Netgear Router.

  • Netgear router keeps dropping connection - Safari, iChat, XBOX Live

    Hello ALL
So I have a driving me crazy problem, which I have tried MS Support, Netgear Support and Demon Support, so now I am asking the masses.
I have an iMac and PowerBook, running OSX 10.4.3, and a Netgear DG814 Router, with built in modem and ethernet ports.
When surfing the web, either Safari or Firefox, the page often starts to load, then freezes on the progress bar, a quick refresh normally sorts it out.
MSN Messenger or iChat, fine at the start, then after sending a handful of messages, signs me out.
XBOX(360) live signs me in, the after 4 minutes signs me out.
iTunes 6, starts downloading a PodCast then freezes, after getting about 2Mb of the file.
    What I have tried:
New firmware on the Netgear Router.
    Installing BroadBand Tuner.
    Uninstalling Broadband Tuner.
New cables to my telephone socket.
    New cables to my ethernet.
    Rebooting all equipment.
Resetting the settings in my XBox 360.
Downloading podcasts as MP3's instead of subscribing.
Opening ports on Mac OSX Firewall for iChat and MSN.
Please help, this is driving me crazy.

Hi Ben de Freitas, just responded to your iMac question, now will take a try at this one.
There was a recent thread on here about a problem connecting to a Belkin router. Solution that finally worked after trying:
    1. Power cycle the iPad
    2. Reset WiFi settings
    3. Hard reset of iPad...hold both sleep and home buttons until the Apple logo appears
    4. Power cycle the router.
The last had to be done by a reset button on the back of the Belkin router. Make sure the router is shutdown completely before restarting it.
Enter all of the network settings by hand into the iPad. Make sure Settings > Safari AutoFill is turned OFF.
    See if that doesn't help.

  • Ipad mini problem with wifi after update 6.1.3

    Hello!
My ipad mini was working fine before the 6.1.3 upgrade, immediately after updating, the wifi stopped working. Restore the iPad to its factory settings as deleting both my data and to reintroduce the network, was still not working.
    Help please!

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
    Some other things to try:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button
