Netgroup support in Mac OS X (Lion)

Hello,
We have a small network here with primarily OS X desktops and RHEL/CentOS servers. There is some discussion about adding some sort of central authentication/authorization server, with an eye to planning for future growth as well as gaining expertise that may be needed for some client projects.
I haven't worked with OS X in some time, however I've recently worked on a project where we implemented AD + netgroups for a windows/linux network. I thought I might be able to use this experience to do something with OpenLDAP + netgroups in the current environment, however, I found very limited information on people's experience with Netgroups in a Mac environment.
eg. this post suggests Netgroups might be problematic, but it was quite some time ago https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1281259?start=0&tstart=0
Anyone have more recent experience?
basically, I want to be able to allow/restrict users coming from Mac OS X desktops to RHEL/CentOS servers, grant/deny access to ssh, maybe Samba shares etc
I'm willing to consider Mac Open Directory, would prefer not to go the AD route.
Mac newbie question: is there an alternative to netgroups for the Mac environment, ideally that would also be compatible with linux?
Thanks,
Simon

Cor-el - - Thanks! this looks like it has some good clues, BUT, in following up, my Library doesn't show me any .plist with .mozilla. in the filename. Am running Mac OS X Lion (10.7.2). FYI - The Library is one of only four (4) folders in the root level on the system partition; the system partition being labeled, Mac Mini HD. These four folders are, Applications, Library, System, Users. Library folder has a subfolder named Preferences. None of the files therein has "mozilla" anywhere in the filename. Looking further, the System folder has its own subfolder labeled, Library! It has no subfolder, Preferences. Running a Finder Search on the Mac, and again on the Mac Mini HD (root folder), I get Zero (0) results with "org.mozilla.firefox.plist." Also, with Contains ".mozilla" and with Contains ".firefox.".
Will greatly appreciate a bit more hand-holding from you, if OK with you.

  • Is Firefox 3.6.19 supported in Mac OS X Lion?

I recently upgraded to Mac OS 10.7. I am working on a project that uses a Firefox extension only supported in Firefox 3 versions. Lion says that Firefox 3.x is not supported as it is in PowerPC. I am aware that Lion dropped support for apps in written for PowerPC. However, I noticed one thing. I reinstalled Firefox 3.6.19 and it seems to be running just as fine. When I restarted, unfortunately, Lion once again keeps telling me I cannot run Firefox 3.6.19.
Any thoughts on this? I need Firefox 3 really. Although I also use Firefox 5 for the rest of my web browsing work. Thank!

Firefox 3.6 requires at least OS X 10.4, the last version that works on OS X 10.3.9 is Firefox 2.0.0.20 available from ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/2.0.0.20/mac/en-US/

  • MAC OS X Lion

Hi, some users wanted to upgrade to the new MAC OS X Lion. But after some checking on our part we found that /usr/local/novell/zenworks/umia/zenumia is no longer supported. Because PPC is no longer supported with MAC OS X Lion. This is part of the Inventory-Only module on MAC. So when can we expect an update to fix this?
Thanks in advance for the help!

i made a dual boot of windows 7 and mac os x lion in my macbook pro .i installed m icrosoft support software also. now, can i install windows updates? do i turn on the automatic updating of updates?

yes you need the updates and patches.
Only some of the drivers that Windows will automatically install at times
and always make sure to insure it is using restore points
do all the maintenance andsuch as normal
use MS Security Essentials for AV is really top notch
    Clean disk space
Use WinClone new program to inisure you have a restore image

Windows has a software updater built into Windows and when you install the Boot Camp drivers then it will install an Apple software updater also. I believe Windows is set to automatically download and install your updates as does the Apple software Updater. They both will update the individual files it needs to periodically.
"Microsoft updates" and "Windows updates" are basically the same thing in Windows. Are you talking about the "Windows support software" when downloading from Boot Camp Assistant? Apple installs a software updater for it's Boot Camp drivers in Windows 7 so you can do it manually or automatically.
The "Hot Fix" your referring to is only for certain motherboards built from other Windows only computer manufacturers and does NOT pertain to any Apple computers.
If you have a problem with your computer then it's best to ask a specific question so we can help better.

  • Mac os x lion with HP c309a. Printing to cd not supported.  Advice?

I'm runing Mac OS X Lion, v 10.7.2 and I have an HP c309a all-in-one printer.  I'd like to print onto a cd.  The printer was made to do so and has a special insert for the cd.  In previous versions of OS X, it has worked fine.  When I use MS Word or Pages to try to print onto a CD, the option is greyed out and is not selectable.  I reinstalled the HP drivers for Lion from the Apple support site and nothing changed.  Anyone have any thoughts on how to fix this?

I don't have a HP printer so cannot confirm this, but with my Canon printer I need to make a couple of settings for CD/DVD printing. Maybe the HP is also expecting another setting to be set so that the CD printing can be selected.
Another thought is that you may need to use a particular HP software to print to CD's on Lion. Were you able to print from Word or Pages onto CD with the previous version of OS X.

  • Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 GSSAPI support

When trying to authenticate a user against a GSSAPI enabled OpenLDAP server, it seems that opendirectoryd skips GSSAPI mechanism and uses CRAM-MD5.
The OpenLDAP server correctly advertises GSSAPI as a supported SASL mechanism (and GSSAPI works with ldapsearch):
    $ ldapsearch -h ldap.aldu.net -b "" -s base "(objectclass=*)" supportedSASLMechanisms
    SASL/GSSAPI authentication started
    SASL username: [email protected]
    SASL SSF: 56
    SASL data security layer installed.
    # extended LDIF
    # LDAPv3
    # base <> with scope baseObject
    # filter: (objectclass=*)
    # requesting: supportedSASLMechanisms
    dn:
    supportedSASLMechanisms: NTLM
    supportedSASLMechanisms: GSSAPI
    supportedSASLMechanisms: DIGEST-MD5
    supportedSASLMechanisms: CRAM-MD5
    # search result
    search: 5
    result: 0 Success
    # numResponses: 2
    # numEntries: 1
If I disable CRAM-MD5 on OpenLDAP, opendirectoryd falls back to a simple bind ignoring GSSAPI again! Is GSSAPI broken on Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3?

Is everything slow, or only some things? If only some, which ones? How long has it been slow? Was it ever not slow?

  • Some features of Mac OS X Lion are not supported for the disk

At the beginning of the installation on my MacBook Pro (early 2008, non-unibody) this alert appeared. The disk is partitioned into three partitions: 1. = Photoshop-scratch, 2. = System, 3. = Bootcamp. It seems that this causes the system-message. What could be the reason for that: The Photoshop-partition or Bootcamp? Is it possible to erase just the PS-partition and then install Lion or do I have to reformat the disk?

  • What Macs will mountain lion support

What Macs will mountain lion support

Looks like Apple has a five year shelf life built into it's computers as far as OS compatability is concerned. Guess I better start saving up for a 2014 Mini.
It depends on your perspective - if you consider "shelf life" as the amount of time before a computer will no longer accept new OS releases, that is one way to look at it. However, if you consider that the computer is still viable for a long time after its last eligible update, its useful life is a lot longer than just five years. I have been getting about ten years of useful economic life of every Mac I've ever bought and I think that's pretty reasonable (they all eventually get the maximum RAM and bigger hard disks).
Put another way, a 2007 Mini is every bit as useful as the day you bought it. I think it is more reasonable to expect you will not feel its age until about 2017.
It is also nothing new with Macs... they have all averaged five or six years of "upgradability" since the very first one in 1984. Eventually the OS has to evolve.

  • How do I set up my Time Machine and Mac Mini with Lion Server so i have one wifi loop in the house?

    HELP!
So I have had a Time Machine wifi loop at the house for approx. 6 years. I run two Macbooks, 2 iPhones, 2 iTouch and a Samsung Smart Blueray on the loop.
I just bought a Mac Mini with Lion Server. When setting it up I'm not sure what or how I managed to do, but I now have 2 wifi loops, one doesn't lock and niether will support the Samsung BlueRay. Also, each time I want to go online with one of the other Mac devices i have to relog into the wifi loop.
Can someone please walk me through the fix. The mac Mini is plugged straight into the Time Machine to recevie its internet connection.
    Thanks!
    John

You often see this limit of 10 clients in wireless hotspots but I have yet to see it in an adsl modem.. most strange way to pay for a service that is really irrelevant how many clients you use.
Have a go .. I recently setup a TC to help a guy run his Roku.. and this setup worked well.. I have no idea if it can work in your case.
Lets say the IP you get is 192.168.2.1-10 .. doesn't matter what it really is. And the adsl modem is 192.168.2.254
(Assuming they are private addresses.. if they are public IP you can just use the DHCP and NAT. )
But go to the airport utility.. I think you need to run v5 at least to change DNS.. but you can do the same thing in v6 using static but no dns changes.
Now you set the IP of the TC manually.. This address might need to be in the dhcp range of the modem to work. You can set the DNS to same IP as the router address.. ie home address of the modem. Or you can use another DNS.. whatever you like.
Then set DHCP for clients that will join.. this can then expand the scope of addresses..
It worked without a NAT error.. although I am not sure exactly how.. on paper it should not be able to work but did.. have a go.. otherwise there is perhaps another way.. but it is complicated.
Give us an example from a computer plugged into the modem of what IP .. subnet mask .. Gateway and DNS you get. Then I can fine tune the values for it.

  • Back To My Mac not waking remote mac in Mountain Lion iCloud

Back To My Mac will not connect to a remote mac in Mountain Lion unless that mac is awake. I have the "Wake for network access" button checked. Once I have somebody touch a keyboard to wake up the remote mac I can share screens, and share files, but this is obviously a problem if nobody is around to wake up the remote machine. I have screen sharing and file sharing checked, and I'm allowing access to the hard drive to myself as a user. This was not a problem in Mobile Me, but seems to be a problem in iCloud.
Additionally, if I manually type in the the WAN IP address for the remote mac, it will connect to it's associated Time Capsule, but will not connect to the mac itself. All macs are 10.8.1.
    Any ideas what's going on?
