NetInstall hangs - spinning forever

10.4.7 server, created disk image using System Image Utility, imaging ibook G4 10.3.9. Following directions in System Image Utility Help, on creating a new install set. Creating image took a long time, left overnight, in the morning it said the image was created successfully. enabled the image in Server Admin, NetBoot pane, set image as startup disk for another laptop (I have 16 to go) and restarted. ibook starts, blue globe, grey screen with spinning wheel, turns to blueish screen with spinning wheel, sits and spins for hours. I left this going overnight as well, no such luck. Still spinning in the morning. I have tried restarting, same thing. what am I doing wrong?

  • IPhoto 09 Faces wheel spins forever and/or won't quit

Hope someone has insight or it helps others...
For the last several days any import into iPhoto will set it into spinning the Faces album waiting wheel forever. There is no way to Quit. Other times just simple quitting won't work.
Activity shows 40-50% iPhoto CPU usage, lots of context switches (270,000 in 5 minutes of CPU time) but no hangs, no faults. I have previously let it run overnight, in case it was somehow reanalyzing 18000 images, but even then the problem remains.
    Console shows: 10/12/09 3:55:58 PM iPhoto[653] * -[NSPathStore2 getCharacters:range:]: index (8) beyond bounds (3)
as most recent item from iPhoto in the log.
Looking inside the iPhoto Library folder the face.db database, iPhotoMain.db etc. have no activity going on. ( I tested by changing the face info on one picture, the Finder last modified date immediately changed, showing the processes are running fine, but just some runaway process won't quit.)
Another console item showed iPhoto finding wrong architectured PGP plugin in contextual menu items, so I have trashed that. And, it finds a Chronos Notes related issue (contextual menu item in library and same named alias in user/library) throw an exception. I also informed ChronosNet.com of this....in case the recent iPhoto acting up is related to the SOHO update that was recently installed.
"I've had iPhoto start acting up (fails to quit) since SOHO NOTES latest update... checking the Console shows a possible problem....
You have a contextual menu entry (alias) in user/library and same name (original item) in library. That makes apps like iPhoto throw exceptions...
10/12/09 4:29:33 PM [0x0-0x40040].com.apple.iPhoto[653] objc[653]: Class SBContextualMenuHelper is implemented in both /Users/imran/Library/Contextual Menu Items/ChronosNotesCM.plugin/Contents/MacOS/ChronosNotesCM and /Library/Contextual Menu Items/ChronosNotesCM.plugin/Contents/MacOS/ChronosNotesCM. One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined."
    Let's see what they state.
Now.... Force quitting now to see what it shows in the logs:
It did not show any quick console messages. I'm surprised an OS X "report this crash to Apple" window did not open up.
Now relaunched... will see if it happens again...
    Imran

iPhone is not "hung" in the traditional sense in that you can do several things within it while it's non-stop Faces spinning wheel displays. I do NOT find it responsive and it does NOT Quit when Faces is spinning forever. tgardner, your experience appears to be different.
Checking in Activity Monitor shows that interestingly there are no hangs or errors. But, looking into contents of iPhoto library shows NO files are modified even after 24 hours or running. In other words, maybe it's not dead, but it is comatose.
Also, checking in Console I always see a variable out of bounds error when this happens.
I have 19000 images and of those maybe 5000 have faces, of about 50 people. ALL of those images are already processed with Names info. Even if Faces needs to update some data, 24 hours of nothing but iPhoto running ought to be enough but it is not.
Others may want to check Console and Activity Monitor and add their experiences here.
    regards

  • Safari PowerBook G4 hangs spinning pinwheel

    Hi all,
I seem to get this same result consistently at the same web site.
    Safari hangs spinning pinwheel forever,
Activity Monitor shows Safari "not responding."
Cannot Force Quit. Only way out is a hard reset.
Very simple install on this PG G4 mostly for web surfing.
Machine is acting well for all other uses.
    Any suggestions?
    I'm stumped on this.
    So long for now, TOM

Hi Carolyn and any other interested listers,
Well it's been interesting trying to fix these issues. Many experiences of the past week are pointing to hardware issues.
I tried to back up my HD expecting the worst, but couldn't get through the process of Restoring (cloning) it to my external FW Disk using Disk Utility ( a task I've done forever without isses).
So I got out the original PBG4 Hardware  test and it failed during the "Memory Test." Next I removed the 1 GB RAM chip from the computer and re-ran the Hardware test twice with AOK results, so I am assuming the soldered on RAM is not the issue.
I was able to run the computer from a Disk Warrior CD, and thought it might boot without anything but the onboard RAM, but no go. It kernal panics without any additional RAM installed. Doesn't the Mac need at least 512 MB of RAM and that would explain it, or should it be booting. (Mac OS Leopard X.5.8 installed).
I guess I should get a replacement 1 GB Chip.
Could it be bad contacts. How does one clean the contacts on a RAM Chip.
Thanks in advance, and so long for now, TOM

  • How do I get iCloud Backup Options to display the list of apps on my iPad?  It just spins forever.

I'm trying to set up iCloud backups for my iPad.  I go into Manage Storage, selet my iPad from my list of iCloud enabled devices and then I get the Backup Info screen.  Its supposed to list all of my applications so I can turn on/off backups on an app by app basis.  Unfortunately it just spins forever and the Backup Options list never populates.
This works fine in my iPhone 4s, but not on my iPad.
I don't want to run a backup without doing this since I have a lot of data in a couple of apps and I don't want those backed up.
Is this an iOS bug on the iPad?

Eventually the Settings app just crashes while waiting for the Backup Options list to populate.
When I try an actual backup of my iPad to iCloud it spins for a while and then crashes.
I only want to backup up a handful of my apps to iCloud but right now I can't even get it to show me the list of apps to turn on/off.

  • I cannot open my iphoto application.  The minute I double click on the icon I get the rainbow which spins forever.  I've used Applejack to repair the hd, but even that didn't work.  I've getting into iphoto preferences..can't.  Help!

I cannot open my iphoto application.  The minute I double click on the icon I get the rainbow which spins forever.  I've used Applejack to repair the hd, but even that didn't work.  I've getting into iphoto preferences..can't.  Help!

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • ITunes 11.2.2 problem: iphone photos spinning forever

It used to be when I plug my iPhone into my MBP, I can go to iTunes, click iPhone, click photos and it will list my albums and allowed me to choose which one to synch.
Not any more.  Everything else works:  Apps, Music, Video etc all show list for choices.  Except photo.  A spinning wheel just keep on spinning as if it was looking for my iPhoto albums.  It spins forever without stopping.
I open up iPhoto and everything is running 100%.  I return to iTunes and it has no idea that iPhoto is there up and running.
    I am running iTunes 11.2.2.(3) and OS-X 10.9.3
My system had always worked until lately.  My MBP automatically updates so I have no idea when the last update it performed and what did it do.
What did I do wrong?  What is iTunes doing wrong?  Is there a fix?  Is Apple aware of the problem?  Is it me only?  Is there somebody out there with the same problem?
My iPhoto library is in an external 8TB LaCie drive.  It had always been and never had problems before.  What changed lately?
How do I report this to Apple?
Thank you all in advance.  Please help.  I need to load new photos from my MBP to my iPhone.  I can no longer do that.  And by the way, the same problem is with the iPad as well.  Something defeated the entire purpose of buying the Apple system.  This is very bad news.  Please help.
    Eddie

Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Delete the iPod Photo Cache. Quit and relaunch iTunes.
    2. Check the names of all albums and slideshows in iPhoto. The names should contain only plain letters and digits, not any punctuation marks or other characters. Rename them if necessary.
    3. Remove the soundtrack from any iPhoto slideshows that have one. If sync now works, you may be able to restore the soundtracks.
    4. Repair or rebuild the iPhoto library. Be sure to back it up first.

  • From iMovie I select share iDVD, and then mouse spins forever in iDVD

from iMovie I select share iDVD, and then mouse spins forever......
Note: this only occurs for one of my movies, because the other iMovie projects open iDVD ok. I have also tried an archived copy of this movie and the same problem occurs. I notice in the backgound that iMovie is access iDVD for a long time (2-3 minutes), and then I can access iMovie again. However iDVD spins the mouse forever until I Option-Apple-Escape and end iDVD.
    I am running:
    iMovie Ver.# 6.03(267.2) and
    iDVD Ver.# 6.04(797)
    1) Is the problem iMovie or iDVD or the specific iMovie file which could be corrupted? Should I try and export this corrupted iMovie file into another file name?
    2) Can I reset the preferences for iMovie and iDVD? And how do I do that?
    3) Can I re-install iMovie and/or iDVD, and do I use my original DVD?

    Hi
    a. I don't ever use the Share/Export to iDVD from within iMovie.
    I do.
    • close iMovie
    • open iDVD
    • Import or just drop the movie into iDVD
    b. Clearing iDVD
    • Delete iDVD pref file
    • Start iDVD
    • Start a new project
    Else read.
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named:
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
Last resort: from Craig: Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.

  • POP email account spins forever, never retrieves mail - how to cure?

I've made no changes to my OS Lion mail settings, but suddenly (yesterday) my main POP account just spins forever and never retrieves mail nor gives an error.  Also now sometimes I have to force quit the client because mail never completely quits the normal way.  I've installed all the OS updates, and my iphone and ipad can retrieve the mail from that account with the same settings just fine.
    Help?

This has just started for me in exactly the same way after I updated my wifes comp to 10.7.5. The iphones and ipads all send and retrieve mail with the same settings with no problems at all.
Did you finally solve this problem?

  • HANG과 SPIN의 구분

    제품 : ORACLE SERVER
    작성날짜 : 2002-04-19
    HANG과 SPIN의 구분
    ======================
    Explanation
    1. 용어 정의
    다음은 v$session_wait을 조회하는 예이다.
    SELECT sid,seq#,event,p1,p2,p3,wait_time
    FROM v$session_wait;
위 SQL 문장은 최소한 3번 이상 실행 한 후 결과를 비교해 보아야 한다.
    컬럼의 의미
    sid 세션의 System IDentifier
seq# Sequence number.
    4. V$SESSION_WAIT 조회 예제
다음은 SQL*Plus에서 실행시킬 수 있는 script의 예제이다.

  • The edit button is spinning forever in the ibooks app. How to make it stop?

The edit button is spinning forever in the ibooks app. How to make it stop spinning?

I used to have this problem on a iPad 2 with iOS7 (and iOS6).  Everytime I would install a new PDF, iBooks would churn away like it was scanning it.  The book wouldn't even show up for me to read until the churning stopped. Eventually the edit button would re-enable and the doc would appear..  It seemed to keep getting worse each time.
I then did a complete restore to the iPad.  Now when I load a new book, it immediately is available for edit.  iBooks still works fine 3 months after I did the restore.

  • Awsome Bar doesn't find anything but is spinning forever

I'm using FF 4.0. After starting FF, everything works as expected. But after some time, the Awsome Bar stops finding any entries in my history/bookmarks. I can't tell exactly when this exceptional behaviour starts, just after some hours of browsing. No matter what I enter into the Awsome Bar, no hit is shown, but the wheel on the left of the bar keeps spinning forever.

You've already checked for most of the things I would check for under these circumstances, so the following "troubleshooting" thoughts are pretty experimental.
Wondering here if this might be an issue with the firewall rules for your ASU. Roughly speaking, ASU checks the MSIs on your PC to get the version numbers of currently installed software, then compares that with the download server's list of version numbers at Apple. So if the firewall isn't letting ASU talk to the server, it might report that there's nothing available for download. (Normally under those circumstances, ASU would report a "The Apple Software Update Server could not be found" message, but odd things can happen with firewall settings issues.)
So check the Firewall rule for ASU in your Firewall settings. Is it allowing full access to the Internet? If not, and you do allow it full access, does ASU display updates?
If it is already allowing full access, try deleting that rule and creating a new one (that allows full access). Does ASU report anything new available for you with a new firewall rule in place?

  • Migration assistant on source mac never spins forever

I have one mac that's running 10.6.8 and another that's running 10.10.  I am trying to use migration assistant to transfer files from the old mac to the new one.  On the 10.10 machine, I can run through migration assistant, it sees the source/old mac, and it displays the 6 digit code I need to type in.
However, on the old mac, once I get to searching for other computers, it just spins forever.  It never finds the new mac.
Both machines are connected to the LAN via wired connections.  Both can definitely see each other normally.  I tried turning off the firewalls on both macs and it didn't help.  I also tried a direct ethernet connection between the two machines and that didn't help either.
Is it even possible to migrate from 10.6.8 to 10.10?
My next step will be to carbon copy clone the old mac's disk and try to do a startup disk migration to the new mac.
Any other hints would be greatly appreciated!

Pointing migration assistant at a cloned boot disk of the 10.6 machine does work.
