Netinstall

Question re syncing my iMac Bookmarks with my iPad (1).
When I first had my iPad, my bookmarks on the iMac were transferred to my iPad. I now find that my bookmarks bar on the iPad is empty and nothing is transferred when it is synced with iTunes on my iMac. How have I lost the data and how can I get it back?
Thanks RAF

OK, I guess when an mac has been stoped in the middle of netinstall you have to boot off the cd and erase the hard drive before you can try the netinstall again.

  • Remote Management Config on NetInstall

    Hello.
Is it possible to configure the Remote Management of a system when creating the Netinstall image? Say for example I install 100+ systems, I don't want to hook each one of these into a screen and manually configure Remote Management.
Any advice or pointers on things to read up on would be great.
    Thanks.

  • 10.4 server to 10.5 server - netinstall no longer works

As it says, I upgraded my OS X server (dual core G5) from 10.4.11 to 10.5.1 and now it's up to 10.5.2. Ever since going to Leopard, I haven't able to get my NetInstall to work. The service is running but I can't get a mac to boot off of the server so I can image it.
This what I can pull out of my logs:

First off there is no bootptab file in etc on my server. I did some googling and found some posts in the DHCP side of Apple's forums relating to the bootpd.plist file (also in etc). I took a look at it but I can't figure out where the error is. The other posts mentioned reducing the reply threshold from 10 down to 0. I took a look at that file and I don't have that line and can't figure out where I would put it if it was needed. I should also mention that I don't run the DHCP service on this server as there is another group here that handles that.
I'll post the contents of bootpd.plist in the next post so as not make this one ungodly long!! heh

  • Anyone with a functioning NetInstall workflow?

After spending some time in the IT business and swapping the private life to Apple products, I finally have got frustrated by these.
No, the user experience is still better than Windows (IMHO) and the Macs (3 iMacs, one Mac Mini server) and iPads (ok, only 1) and iPhones (3, but my wife is already set on track....soon there will be 4) are far better to support in family environment. I still remember my 10- or 11-year old daughter trying ICQ for the first time using Windows XP: hey daddy, I've got this file from a friend (saying it's a "picture") and even after clicking it three times I can't the the photo! Guess what: best thing was to reinstall the whole computer to get rid of the virus. Then we replaced this evil piece of IT with an iMac and everything went smoth from now on (cough..cough, well - almost).
With the advent of more fruity machines it was time to set up a server to better organize things. Being used to the Windows backend - responsible for AD, Windows Server and Group Policies - my frustration level should be very high. But then (I entered this world with Snow Leopard, moved on to Lion and ML) comes Apple, *selling* a "server product" and EASILY jumps across my hurdle!!!
I've never expected it to be that worse: where MS had faulty documentation for new products, Apple has none, where Apple has documentation/articles, they are faulty or missing most aspects; a lot of the documents are outdated, even 6 month after releasing a new product (e.g. ML ist a new product, replacing Lion).
The community (yes everyone reading this) seem to be left alone in the rain. Where are those Apple engineers contributing? While MS has learned - a lot of professional staff is contributing to the community and engineering staff doing blogs - what about Apple's world???
Thinking of my blood pressure, I'd rather calm down ;-)
While there are some good sites out there about the inner workings of OS X (among those I'd like to mention Greg Neagles managingosx-site, krypted.com and afp548.com) they could not shed light on every aspect or get every piece done as I would like it to be done.
Well...now that I feel a little better (no, Apple, it hasn't been nothing you did!!!), back to the subject:
I would like to build a NetInstall workflow using System Imaging Utility (no other product). I'd like to stay with what Apple offers me right out of the box.
The workflow should comprise the downloaded ML installer as the source, erasing and partitioning the hard disk (rescue and system partition with a name of "Macintosh HD"), doing a clean installation of ML with a German (you might have guessed it from my writing) locale without user interaction, creating a local admin account with the name "admin" and any choosen password (let's say "Secret"), and finally installing configuration profiles from profile manger: a trust profile, an enrollment profile and a profile for some config settings (binding to OD and mobile account creation). Without user interaction means: the installation should not ask me for my country, location services, a local account or any other stuff. After booting from network it should run up to a login screen where an OD account can logon - without stopping, without user interaction.
Is this possible? What has to be done for this? Are there some proven examples on the internet (where please!)?
I'd like to do a NetInstall, not a NetBoot or NetRestore. Nothing in the documentation says it can't be done? Are ther some parts (like 90%) of the documentation missing? Have I overlooked them? My NetInstall always stop to ask me about the country - like a preinstalled OS X on your Mac will do dduring first boot.
I am curious about the upcoming answers. Pleas do not hesitate to give a short reply if I overlooked information. I really have tried to find it, but maybe asked the wrong questions.
Also I encourage everyone to state in this thread, that she or he does not know the answer and wher to find information related to this question, for I hope it will make Apple take a closer look about what's going on. It's just a minute...and may contribute to world peace :-))
    Kind regards
    Carsten

Better look twice. That's what I did.
Before it seems I am just an ignorant dummy, I went through the documentation again. Maybe, now I am just a reader with deficiencies ;-))
Mire3212, I think I followed the documentation and considered all restrictions for a NetInstall image. I've even gone further and considered what's not written in the documents: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4087
Can you explain, which actions you put in your NetRestore workflow and in which order?
But back to NetInstall. First, what's working? Selecting the standard point-and-click NetInstall image without further configuration in SIU works. I can netboot my client, it will install and I'll get a plain vanilla ML installation, showing me the country selection screen. I can later create a user and have a running system. But every input (country, location services, local user,...) has to be done manually.
    What's not working?
As soon as I put a workflow action between the  "Define Image Source" action and the "Create Image" action, these in-between action will do nothing or the whole client installation stucks around 23%.
I see (saw?) some light, for an inserted "Partition Disk" action showed up during installation. But later this workflow (ehm, I mean the installation on the client) stuck at 23%. BTW: do you know where I can find some information about why it stuck? Log entries on the server are....should I say "pretty useless"?!
Oh wait, there is some useful information you can get from server logs: after buldings a new image with SIU, activating it and setting it as the "Standard" image in server app, you'll get from the system log, that a client still uses the former standard image. What a fun! You'll have to disable the former image to change the Standard
I'm glad, that your NetRestore image is working, for I am not the only one with problems: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4740855
I hope, there is someone out there, who has been through this and shed some light on how to do it right. Or even say, it is impossible to be done this way, because of too many bugs in the software. But I fear, Apple's engineers won't come to my rescue, for I assume they are driven by businees manager, setting a pace, which doesen't let time for documentation....or wonderfull and workings products.

  • NetBoot & NetInstall across subnets

I've recently begun deployment of our NetBoot servers within our organization. Everything is working as expected, but I'd like to be able to NetInstall across subnets without having to add a helper address to the routers. Basically we're in a large organization and getting rules added to the routers is a lengthy and unlikely scenario. That said, I've seen a few articles regarding the ability to NetBoot across subnets using OF or EFI.
    http://www.bombich.com/software/nbas.html
I've verified NetBoot is working on the same subnet, but I've encountered an issue when NetBooting from different subnets. I've tested three systems (iBook G4, PowerMac G4, & Intel MacBook), but only the Intel system is able to communicate. If I look at the server logs, the MacBook is able to consistently communicate, but there are no log entries for any of the PPC attempts. Thus, PPC systems time out when attempting to access the server.
I'm not using any NetBoot, DHCP, or MAC address filtering, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I'm pretty much using an out-of-box configuration with all the larest updates (10.4.7). As far as the client, I've used the NBAS tool, as well as manually configured the systems using Terminal (sudo nvram boot-device="enet:10.x.x.x").
Anybody have any additional input regarding the ability to NetBoot across subnets? Any idea why an Intel system would NetBoot, but PPC would not? Again, filtering has not been enabled.

Yes, each system points to the appropriate image based on architecture (PPC, Intel). The problem is that the server never seems to acknowledge the PPC systems. If I boot an Intel system, I can see the communication data in the server logs. The PPC systems never even register an entry in the logs. It appears as though they never commmunicate at all. Even if a PPC image is specified and an Intel systems boots to the NetBoot server, the commmunication is still logged.
I need to run some additional tests, as well as a packet capture. Perhaps a packet capture will yield some useful information.

  • Newbie: how to host 10.4 netinstall images on a 10.5 server

I tried almost everything but I don't get it to work.
    Technical info:
1 server running 10.5, Netboot, NSF (which should do the trick according to the documentation.
1 client running 10.4 clean installation + firefox
    Used tools:
Server admin tools 10.4 and 10.5
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Disk utility
    Netrestore
    What did I try:
Created an image of an 10.5 leopard (not server) installation dvd with the server admin tools (system image utility) and netinstall runs perfect. (I don't see netrestore but just the installer of 10.5)
Also did this with 10.5 server image and also that worked without any problems.
Created an master image of the 10.4 client (all the above named tools have been tried). Image creation is no problem. creating .nbi folder is no problem. Copy it to the NetBootSP0 folder, still no problem. Tried to boot from the image and there is the problem.
Client boots with Netrestore. I can select the NetBootSP0 folder and the *.nbi folder and the image.
I click on restore and got only this message.

Can someone explain me what is going wrong?
I have to say that this error only shows when i try to boot from the netinstall image i created with the 10.4 system image utility.
The nbi image i created with netrestore helper does boot, shows me the installer, says it is completed but when it is rebooting the OS is still the same as before the installation, very weird.
According to this online document it should work as long as you create it with the right tools (10.4 tools for 10.4 images):
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306542
But probably I missed a little detail which I also could not find here on the forum an also not on other forum.
Thanks in advance for your time responding to this.

Never mind, I already found the solution myself.
    What I did wrong was:
    - not copying the master image to the nbi folder
    - selecting the netinstall-restore.dmg image as source to copy to my HD.
The thing is, when you create a netinstall image for 10.5, the image itself is already included in the netinstall image so you don't have to do anything else.
With the 10.4 image however, you also have to copy the master image to the NetBootSP0 directory.
In the *.nbi folder contains an netinstall-restore.dmg file. But that is only to boot you to netrestore, it's not the image itself.
Other alternative is to copy the images to another folder that you share with AFP and adjust the configuration of netrestore like described in this manual:
    http://www.shellharbourd.det.nsw.edu.au/pdf/misc/osxrestoringnet.pdf
This manual was also how I figured out that I forgot to copy the image to the NetBootSP0 folder.

  • Creating a NetInstall Set for '10 MacBook

I am attempting to create a NetInstall set for a brand new Intel MacBook running 10.6. I have used Bombich's NetRestore Helper in the past for set creations but the last version (3.4.6) hangs and will never complete the set creation. Is there any other way to create a set for a 10.6 machine? I've looked into Deploy Studio but I don't have anything set up yet and I'd like to continue with my current setup for the time being. I'm running 10.5.8 server and all other machine types boot fine for NetInstall purposes. Just the newest machines have trouble. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Last I heard, Bombich's tool didn't work in SnowLeopard. You can use Apple's System Image Utility, but you'll have to download the 10.6.3 Server Admin Tools and install in on a Snow Leopard client system.

  • Netinstall after 10.5.8 update

    Hello,
I currently have 210 new iMacs to setup for the start of the new academic year and have built a netinstall image to allow this. Before our Xserve was updated to 10.5.8 I was able to push out netinstall images easily. After the update there is the option within Server Admin to allow/deny certain MAC addresses. The problem I’m having is when I enter a list to deny or allow and click save these MAC addresses aren’t stored and NetBoot resorts to the default of deny all.
Is there an easy way around this? Or could someone point in the right direction of something to read on the matter as I have no idea how to resolve this problem.
    Thanks

Are you referring to the server level filtering ("Enable NetBoot/DHCP filtering" checkbox in the "Filters" tab of the NetBoot window)? Or are you referring to image level filtering (brought up by double clicking on an image).
Neither one underwent any changes for the 10.5.8 update. So you shouldn't be seeing any "new" issues here.
The image level filtering doesn't actually work so leaving that set to "Allow only clients listed below (deny others)" is fine.
If your issue is that no clients are seeing your images... I'd try restarting the bootp daemon (sudo killall -HUP bootpd).

  • Os x 10.8.3 server netinstall and netrestore step by step

hi all, i am looking for step by step instruction to configure netinstall and netrestore with automator setting and configuration.  server is 10.8.3.  any help would be great.

The best reference I have found is "Mac OS X deployment v10.6" by Kevin M. White.
This forum and also the one at afp548.com are a big help for troubleshooting.
    Good luck!

  • Is there a way to password protect the NetInstall process?

I could not find this topic through the search function (correct me if I´m wrong) so I´m starting a new one here.
Is there a way to exclude users from accidentally clicking their way through the NetInstall process? In specific I would like to password protect it, without using third-party-applications if possible.

Hmm.. ..for me alone doing NetInstalls, this would not be a problem, but I need to ensure relatively easy Install procedures for less trained personal (Like start with "N", click OK, enter password, off you go..).
Has anyone experimented with modifying the System Restore Package inside the NetInstall .dmg? I´m not that experienced with .pkgs, but might this be a possible way? Some preinstall-script doing LDAP-authentification?
Or is there a way to add MAC-addresses to the Server Admin allow list via a script? Then I could configure one server as a "gate" with a NetBoot Set containing an account allowing the computer to start of a second NetInstall-only-server through a login script...

  • Cloning a Boot Drive with NetInstall?

I need to duplicate the state of one configured client machine to several others on a network. Thus far, I've gotten the NetInstall option to work with base configurations from an OS X client install CD, but not the image I've created from the configured machine using Mac OS X Server's System Image Utility.
How do I clone the configured machine's hard drive to others on the network?
    Any leads appreciated.

Hi Brian, thanks for your reply. I think I was unclear and I need to clarify what's happening and where it's all breaking down.
    1. I have a Mac Mini that's configured the way I want (preferences, assorted documents and apps), and the hard drive of which I want to clone to other machines.
    2. I connect this Mini to the server, as a target disk, and create a NetInstall disk image using the System Image Utility.
    3. I then connect an unconfigured Mini to the network, and select the NetInstall image as its boot volume; it boots successfully and opens the installer.
    4. I run the installer; after about a second, the installer says it was successful and reboots. However, the installer has, in fact, not installed anything.

  • NetBoot/NetInstall settings in Server Admin buggy as ****?

    Hi,
I administer a Mac pool in College. We recently updated to all new iMacs (except for one, which still is a 2006 C2D iMac) and Leopard Server running on a PowerMac G4 (Dual 1GHz, 1.5 GB RAM).
Except for a few initial quirks with Directory Services, Leopard Server runs fine and snappy on the G4 and seems highly reliable. But then again, there's this BIG problem with NetInstall.
We setup one of the new iMacs as the master computer with all the neccesary software installed, and then created a NetInstall image from it using System Image Utility. It took a while, but went fine.
We then placed the image in the proper directory (Library/NetBootSP0), and configrured and launched NFS and NetBoot services in Server Admin. It found the image and offered configuration for it. But somehow, the most essential settings are not saved, when clicking "Save" in server admin, no matter whether the service is still running or being stopped before settings are changed.
These settings are saved by Server Admin:
    Default image
    Enable this image
    Diskless (while not being available)
    Architecture (Universal, Intel or PPC)
    Protocol (NFS or HTTP)
While these settings *are not* saved by Server Admin whatsoever:
Model property filtering ("Allow any Apple Computer" vs. "Allow only specified models")
MAC Address filtering ("Allow only listed clients and deny others" vs. "Deny listed clients and allow all others")
(These settings appear when selecting an image from the list an clicking on the Edit-button (with a pen on it))
Whenever I make a change to this and click "Save", Server Admin simply ignores this and reverts it to the default settings, which are "Allow any Apple Computer" an "Allow only listed clients and deny others" with no clients listed.
When I leave the setting on "allow listed and deny others" (Whitelist), an add a clients MAC Address and save, this is ignored by Server Admin.
When I change the setting to "deny listed and allow others" (Blacklist), and save, this is ignored by Server Admin too. No matter whether I add MAC Addresses to the blacklist or not.
That way, the NetBoot service will *not send my NetInstall Image to any client*, because it thinks it has a whitelist configured, that is permanently empty. Clients not added to the whitelist are denied, which is good, but it is not possible at all, to even add a client to that whitelist. Blacklisting some machine and allowing all others doesn't work either.
Editing the approproate NBImageInfo.plist manually showed me, that Server Admin is able to:
read settings for specified types of models properly, but unable to change this setting
and *unable to even read settings about whitelisted or blacklisted MAC addresses* from the plist (keys "EnabledMACAddresses" or "DisabledMACAddresses") properly.
And so, it also cannot write these settings into the plist, it seems.
I have to NetInstall the classroom until thursady, and because of this bug, I cannot get it to work as it should, since all my cients are denied the image. This is very frustrating.
    What can I do?

MAC address filtering at the server level works, just not filtering at the image level. Depending on exactly what you are trying to achieve, this might help. But, I'm not clear on exactly what you are trying to achieve with the filtering.
The 1,0 syntax is mostly irrelevant. It is simply a reference to the NIC on the connecting system. If you have a machine with multiple NIC's (such as a Mac Pro) you might see something like 2,0:xx... instead. Regarding the rest of it, I believe the Server admin will accept accept any MAC address in the format of xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx with or without leading 0's (i.e. 00:0a:1b vs. 0:a:1b).
Model filtering information is stored in the NBImageInfo.plist, and can be manually tweaked with an appropriate application of force. You can manually move system types that you want enabled into the EnabledSystemIdentifiers list (and, of course, remove them from the DisabledSystemIdentifiers list).

  • Netinstall package installation fails

I've been struggling with Netinstall and Netrestore for a few days, and I'm hoping someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong.
I'm trying to use a customized NetInstall image to install Snow Leopard and some additional software on client machines. The OS installs successfully, but it fails while installing one of the additional packages.
Here's my image creation workflow from Automator:
    1) Define image source (Snow Leopard retail DVD)
    2) Add Packages and Post-Install Scripts: Includes packages for Audacity (made with Package Maker), Microsoft Remote Desktop and Microsoft Office 2008
    3) Customize Package Selection: Using primarily to have the image skip the non-English language translations.
    4) Apply System Configuration Settings: Used to connect the computer to Active Directory, generate a unique computer name and change ByHost preferences. The installation doesn't seem to get to this point.
    5) Create Image
Automator says the workflow completed, and it does boot successfully from my 10.6.2 server.
The hangup seems to be happening when it installs Audacity. The only thing the install package does is put a folder in /Applications with a small number of files in it. The folder and files are created, but nothing after that point runs.
I saved the installation log, and I noticed something in the last few lines that seems to indicate that the Audacity package is the problem. Is there anything I can do that will make it continue beyond this point?

Yes, that's a tough one to get around. If you don't mind hacking SIU a little the best fix is to edit the script:
    /Applications/Server/System\ Image\ Utility.app/Contents/Library/Automator/Create\ Image.action/Contents/Resources/createNetRestore.sh
and change the line that reads:
    /usr/bin/hdiutil create "$destPath/System" -srcfolder "${sourceVol}" -uid 0 -gid 80 -mode 1775 -ov -puppetstrings || exit 1
    to:
    /usr/bin/hdiutil create "$destPath/System" -srcfolder "${sourceVol}" -fsargs "-c a=16384,c=8192,e=1280" -uid 0 -gid 80 -mode 1775 -ov -puppetstrings || exit 1
i.e. add '-fsargs "-c a=16384,c=8192,e=1280"' before the -uid

  • Netinstall via Wireless Card

I'm trying to put Arch Linux onto my computer's laptop using a Netgear WG511T wireless card for installation.  However, the wireless card is apparently not recognized (even though it should be supported natively), so it fails when I try to use DHCP polling.  Is there any way I can get the netinstall CD to recognize the wireless card?

What output do you get when you type iwconfig? Have you done "ifconfig eth0 up"? (replace eth0 with your interface)
