Netintalling iBooks broke, Macooks fine?

Hi All,
I've been, for the past week, imaging Macbooks using netinstall. Everything has been going great. I used three different images from a xServe G5. DHCP is running on the G5 as well.
All the sudden, when I tried to image the iBooks with an iBook image, the iBooks seem to just hang. I have no idea what the difference is between today and yesterday.
I created the iBook image using disk utility to create a compressed dmg. Then I used the system image utility to create the install image. I have tried a different image that worked a couple days ago for the ibooks, and that one now doesn't work.
This is very strange to me, but hopefully someone here might have an answer. Thanks!
I am running 10.4.10 on a Dual 2Ghz G5 xServe with 1gb ram. Here are my logs:

iOS 3.2 is actually the ipad's software version. IBooks can run on the ipad and on ios4 devices(ipad doesn't have iOS 4 yet).
As a 1st gen ipod touch, you won't be able to use iBooks. Apple is trying to phase out support for older products.
I suggest using the app "Stanza" instead. It is a great book reader and I honestly think it runs better than iBooks. It just has a seperate store not a part of apple if you wanted to buy any books. Also, it has all the free books that are available through iBooks too.

The iBooks dictionary works fine for my iPhone 5, but it does not work for my iPad 2. Is this fixable?

I went to the Audio store to see about getting a surround sound and the salesperson asked me why I wasn't using AirPlay, he said it was better than the Bluetooth, better quality. So I do have AirPlay on my Sony and I installed the app on my iPhone 5 but they can't find eachother.......when I try looking for my iPhone on my receiver it does not show it. The Sony display works through my TV, the set up screen is there but it says no devices found. Like I said, the Bluetooth finds the iPhone and works ok, but the AirPlay does not.....looking at the manuel it says that the AirPlay will recognize my device (iPhone 5) but it does not..........

  • Disk works fine on iBook, but appears as a new unwritten disk on a Mac Mini.

I have a DVD with several flash apps that when inserted in an iBook G4 works fine, but when inserted in a Mac Mini is shown as a new blank unwritten disk. What could be causing this? I would like to view the content on my newer 2007 Mini but currently can't.

Ok, I kinda goofed. This is auctally a CD-R as reported by disk utility, not a DVD. The problem still is still here though.
woodmeister50 The format is listed as Mac OS Extended and the partition map scheme is listed as CD Partition Scheme.

  • Shuffle shows in explorer, works on iBook, not in iTunes on XP

My wife has a shuffle, my iPod photo works/updates etc. on the PC, the shuffle shows up fine in Explorer and I can browse it. I also plugged it into my iBook, shows up fine there too and says it's linked to the other computer and shows it as formatted FAT32, I even updated it via the mac iPod updater, but my music library is on the PC.
I've updated the software, rebooted, reset the shuffle, etc. but the PC iPod updater and iTunes will not recognize it. I don't think the shuffle is defective, I think the software to recognize shuffles has bugs.
Can anyone help? Why won't it just let you pick the drive letter, why must it autodetect?

more weirdness, works in my other PC, this one has a ton of USB devices and drive letters taken up, I stopped every exe and service but the critical ones, and it still doesn't work in this one with all the songs.
winamp can send songs to it, I guess I'll just use that.

  • IBook G4 won't boot / patchy behaviour

I'd like some input on debugging a friend's iBook G4.
System specs: White 12" 1.3GHz, 512MB RAM (wired), airport card, stock tiger, no other peripherals.
Only extra drivers I could see installed were for an MS Bluetooth keyboard/mouse. No uninstaller apparent, and can't see specific drivers for these devices in relevant system folders.
System was booting to kernel panic screen, and with an urgent paid writing assignment she brought it to me for assistance. Occasionally (after power off?) the system would boot and run for a few minutes before kernel panic.
Response to special key combos is patchy at boot time. It's hard to get the system to boot into any special mode, seems like the keyboard only responds sometimes.
When I can get it to boot, safe mode runs consistently, while normal (unsafe?) mode kernel panics quickly.
We tested the disk for errors while booted off the 10.4 install CD. No issues.
We ran an archive+install but this behaved exactly as before. (Repeated to confirm. Same results.)
I did notice that plugging a USB mouse before boot would prevent the system from booting. Plugging the mouse in during or after boot produced two results; either a working mouse, or a non-working mouse.
Trackpad works intermittently. She reported that she had cleaned the trackpad (not sure if this was very recent).
My suspicion is that something has caused an issue in a USB device, possibly the trackpad, and that the kernel panics if the USB drivers are fully loaded (would explain it working better in safe mode) but isn't sensitive to the same odd behaviour when basic drivers only are loaded.
This is pretty much a best guess, based on me having tried to isolate the issue at various other points and failed to find anything else specific to work with.
We disconnected the trackpad connector, but this didn't improve the situation; still frozen if USB device connected at boot, and still boots to kernel panic otherwise.
Are there some specific drivers I could disable to test this theory? I don't expect this to help much, however, as driver issues are not indicated by the usb mouse freezing system at boot time.
She would be very pleased to have the machine working again. Any suggestions or input will be much appreciated!
    Thanks

Our iBook G4 started having kernel panics about 2 weeks ago. It would panic at start up or after a few minutes of running, similar to your story. To cut to the chase I did the standard routine for a kernel panic down to archiving and installing with no luck (http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html ). When I checked the panic log after all this it seemed to indicate a problem with the airport. I managed to get it to boot and turned the airport off and the problem went away.
I took it in to get checked today thinking the Airport would be an easy fix. They ran a diagnostic DVD and told me the problem was with the CPU and was not fixable without replacing the whole board.
I did some looking today and this seems to be a common problem with this model. The best summary of the various threads is at http://www.appledefects.com/wiki/index.php?title=IBookG41.33GHz . The only solution I could find seems to be in French and has a scary photo of a flaming computer at the end! http://www.applintosh.net/readarticle.php?article_id=1
I got back to the store about this particular fault and if it applied to my ibook and they kindly replied
"Yes I am aware of people having problems with this, I pulled the top case of the machine off and disconnected all the peripherals as part of our process of elimination, it still only booted to a black screen when trying to boot our diagnostic hard drive(this was with the airport/Bluetooth card Disconnected) I then connected the optical drive up and booted our diagnostics disc up, it still failed the CPU test.
From having the diagnostic test fail and the fact that it would not even turn on when every peripheral was disconnected leaves me with a 100% guarantee that it can only be the main logic board.
19 out of the last 22 of the iBooks that I have seen that have had kernal panic issues and then we have found it to be a conflict with the airport card have all had faulty logic boards, we have tried new airport cards many of times with no luck. 1 was a faulty airport card but it was faulty from day one of purchase and the other 2 were because they had liquid spilt on the keyboard and it leaks down right on top of the airport card."
So I dont know if the problem is in the airport itself or the logic board but it would seem that in this model they are one and the same. More depressing news was to follow - logic boards cost $1600 NZ so it would seem a new computer is the more sensible option. Bit disappointing after just 2 and a bit years use.
The iBook itself works fine when the airport is off, even with an ethernet cable connected to enable internet access. Dont feel that happy though doing anything important with a computer with a faulty logic board though no matter how well backed up..
Hope this helps a fellow Kiwi. If you find anything useful out let me know. FYI the local stores I tried were Ubertech and Magnum Mac.

  • Macbook vs ibook

I am thinking of upgrading.  I am looking at refurbished laptops.  I am trying to see what the differences are between the macbooks and ibooks.
I currently am using a very outdated imac.  I use the computer for e-mail...shopping..research on various topics...create documents and want to get a little more into graphics.
I have been reading up as to what to buy but am still not sure of the differences between the 2 types of ;aptops.
I am also curious. If these machines come with 10.5  what is the upgrade cost to 10.6  and where do I find info on applecare and its cost?  I think this might be a good idea.
    ANY feedback would be appreciated.
    Thank you

Here's a link to Eyerymac's page on the differences between iBooks and the original 2006 MacBooks http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/faq/differences-between-macbook-ib ook-powerbook.html
The MacBooks are much faster in start-up and all applications. With a MacBook you can start-up, open your browser and load a web page while the iBook is still starting up. The ibooks will work fine if you aren't concerned with speed.
With iBooks you can run 10.5 only on a G4 iBook with a 900Mhz processor or better. You Can't run 10.6 on the iBooks. That requires an Intel processor which is only found on MacBooks. OS10.6 costs $29. For a 10.5 retail disk that will work on any Mac you'll have to go to eBay.
Applecare can only be bought for a MacBook that's less than one year old. It has to be bought before the original one year warrenty expires.
    Here's a list of all iBooks http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html

  • Connecting my ibook to Xbox Live

Can anyone explain how i connect my ibook so my xbox can connect live. I want to plug the cross over cable i have into the ethernet port of my ibook and then go online.
essentially this should just be a shared network connection. As my ibook is connected to the net through a linksys router.
do i have to change some settings on my ibook or Xbox so it works? I should point out that my Ibook is working fine and connects perfectly wirelessly.
    Please help me!

    Wonderwhat,
Assuming that your iBook is connected to the net itself via AirPort Extreme,
Head to Apple -> System Preferences -> Sharing -> Internet Sharing, and choose "Share your connection from: AirPort". In the next section, check the box next to "Built-in Ethernet". Then, click the "Start" button.

  • IBook and Mac mini

Hello users... I'd like to know if anyone has helpful information as to whether my iBook G4 can or will Communicate BETTER with my mac mini? I know that they are totally different operating systems but my iBook is perfectly fine and works great, plus I do not want to spend more money on a new laptop for travel or out and about. The updates that I install when the update messages show up, I assume are for the intel operating system, yes? I'll take what information you can share from you pros.
    Thank you,
    Ronald

Updates should not appear for the Intel operating system in Software Update.
The only update you really need to apply, and that's if the rest of your PowerPC applications are compatible with it are either 10.4.11, or 10.5.8.
10.4.11 combo PowerPC is free to 10.4.1 users. 10.5.8 you'd have to shop around and find 10.5. installer DVD first, and then apply the 10.5.8 combo update. Apple no longer sells the 10.5 installer disc. See my FAQ* on upgrading:

  • IBooks Author preview doesn't work

I have created a partial iBook using iBooks Author. When I follow the instructions within the application to preview on ipad my ipad doesn't show up in the devices pane.
    What am I missing?

I had the same problem. I solved it step by step as follows.
    1. open a new empty book, and then preview it to make sure the communcation between iPad and iBook Author is fine.
    2. if Step 1 works, try to export your book to .ibooks file (File>Export>iBooks). if this step cannot work, do Step 3.
    3. delete your book chapter by chapter (backup first) and then export to .ibooks. if the .ibooks file produced, there are something wrong in the chapter (just deleted one).
In my case, I found there are two background images in the Chpater page. After delete one of them, it can be previewed in iPad.

  • IBooks 3 fails to launch even after update

On my ipad 2, iBooks version 3 still fails to launch after update. This is the first time I can recall Apple failing to fix a material bug. I hope it is working on the problem.

iBooks is working fine on my iPad 2.
Lets try first quitting the iBooks app then resetting the iPad.
Go to the Home screen and double click the Home button. That will reveal the row of recently used apps at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold on the app in question until it wiggles and displays a minus sign. Tap the minus sign to actually quit the app. Then tap anywhere on the screen above that bottom row to return the screen to normal. Then restart the app and see if it works normally.
Then reboot your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • IBook G4 won't boot after 10.5 software update?

    Hi,
I have a iBook G4 14" 1.42GHZ 768mb of ram which was running fine under 10.4.11. I updated to OS X 10.5.4 via a retail discs and it installed and re-started perfectly. All seemed ok so i ran software update and the installation seemed to go fine. However upon restarting it all i'm getting is the grey Apple screen & logo along with the spinning flower icon below it? If i boot of the installation disc it won't see the hard drive, just the Mac OS X discs? If i reboot holding the "alt" key it shows the discs as macintosh HD but it still hangs at the Apple logo. Disc Utility will also not see the hard drive. The iBook was working fine before this, is it just coincidence that the hard drive has died?
    Any thoughts or advice welcome?
    Thanks.

Is it possible that the hard drive was nearly full and installation of Leopard has filled it to the point of disastrous failure? It's generally recommended to keep at least 15% of total hard drive space free for smooth operation.
If this is a possibility, do you have access to another Mac with FireWire or a bootable external FireWire hard drive so you can pull some things off the drive to another location in order to free up some hard drive space?

  • IBook osx 10.5.6 no finder, won't boot fully, can't boot from disk

My iBook has worked fine ever since the upgrade to 10.5.6, no problems at all.
I installed Safari 4, and whatever security updates it required for that a few days ago and everything still worked fine.
Yesterday I awoke it from sleep and the colors of the default desktop (aurora) had all black parts turned blue, there was no bar at the top of the screen (where file edit, clock etc usually are ), and the finder didn't work. Dock and all it's icons showed up but none are clickable.
Did a hard shut down with the power button, restart it passes grey screen fine, goes direct to blue screen then to desktop - no starting OS X progress bar or anything, then back to the same blue-tinted desktop, unclickable dock, and lack of top bar.
I booted to single user mode, ran /sbin/fsck -yf said drive was ok,
can't boot up with the install disk, or with disk warrior. It passes the grey screen fine, but then gets to blue screen and the computer just shuts down, then boots back into that same bluish desktop.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks very much,
    Maikunari

    Hello m:
You have (IMHO) a hardware problem. Without being able to boot from a DVD the troubleshooting options are almost nil.
You could try to reset the SMC/PMU:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
If that does not work, I am afraid a trip to a technician for diagnosis is in order.

  • Change from iBook to powerbook? Tough choice!

Sorry if some of you think the question does not belong here. But I really want to get some suggestions from somebody who had or are having the same problem as me.
I have been using my iBook for more than two years and everything is almost perfect. However, I am really attracted by the new powerbook G4 (12 inches) for no specific reason. Just want to buy it and play around with it. So, according to your experiences, how much benefit can I get by changing from my current iBook to a new Powerbook G4? I will appreciate any comments and suggestions.
And, if I do buy a new powerbook G4, how can I deal with this iBook? Is there any place I can easily trade in? Does Apple have such service to recycle used laptops?
    Thanks a lot.
    iBook G4 12 inches   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   800 MHz; 640 MB DDR SDRAM

I can be a daunting choice to make. Odds are you iBook works just fine, maybe a little slow but does the job you want it to do. The Powerbook is sexxy though and is a bit faster with a few more options than your iBook.
Although I would also have to say wait a little while longer until the Intel Platforms come out. Rumor mills are already saying that a major unveilment of the new systems will be made as soon as January. And with our boy Steve, it usually means that something is going to come out quick. So if your a "gottahavitnow" guy, that is what I would really it up. Yeah you can have the 12" powerbook now, but think of what you can have in just a short while, be the first one on the block with something that has never been made before!
I know it's hard once you got your mind on something. Being a technofreak as well I understand, I get a new phone every 4 months, have 3 computers in my house, and even 2 iPods for no good reason really. It is like crack, but the better crack is right around the corner my friend.

  • Search Function isn't Working on Specific PDFs in iBooks?

Recently, I have been having problems with the search function in iBooks.  I have opened 2 large PDFs in iBooks, the primary reason being to use the search function, and 1 of the 2 PDFs is not coming up with any results for searches. File 'A' ha no problems at all with searching, but file 'B' just comes up with the message "Search Completed  No matches found" Note that both PDFs came from the same (clean) website.
Everything is up-to-date on my device (iPhone 5s) iOS Version: 8.2, iBooks Version: 4.1.1. I don't know why the search on this particular PDF Isn't working, as all other PDFs I have in iBooks perform just fine with the search function.
    Any help is appreciated!

  • FCE - Viewer very jerky on iBook G4

I had an old copy of Final Cut Express v.1 that I just loaded on my iBook (I have the upgrade to v.3 on order). One thing I've noticed is that clips in the viewer are impossbly "jerky": the audio is Ok, but the video starts and stops so bad it's impossible to watch. If I place the clip on the timeline and then render it, it plays fine on the canvas.
Of course, this makes the viewer totally unusable for me. Is this a function of too little 'horsepower' on my iBook? I was thinking of getting a new PowerBook, but the jump from 1.2Ghz to 1.5Ghz didn't seem like it was really worth it. Or is it possibly something that will work better in the new version?
Any help/tips you can offer would be GREATLY appreciated. I really want to upgrade from iMovie's limitations, but the way it's working now I don't see a huge advantage.
    Thank you.
    12 iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4)   1.2Ghz, 80GB, 1.25GB RAM, SuperDrive

I can run FCE v.2 on my 1GHz 12" PowerBook just fine, so your 1.2GHz iBook should be fine as well. You might find some more tips in the Final Cut Express forum, but one thing I was told is to make sure none of your windows (Timeline, Viewer, Tools, etc.) were overlapping each other. You may have to shrink the size of the various windows, but that helped me out before with some playback issues.
