Netopia router, Airport Extreme Base, & Airport Express

I have a Netopia router with ip 192.168.1.xxx as my DSL which goes into my Airport Exterme Base which has 10.1.1.1. From there I have many feet away, an Airport Express and farther away my iMac.
I would like to connect my 2 HP printers, which have ethernet ports, into the Netopia router. Do I need to bridge the 2 networks and if so, who do I do it?
Thanks
George

  • Wireless router / airport express suggestion?

i just bought a macbook pro, and would like to know if anyone recommends the aiport express over the extreme. also, with its built-in wireless, do i even need one of these routers?

I hear a lot of problems with some third-party routers, so bought the AEBS when i got our first notebook in January. I also wanted the AEBS to support several wired Macs.
At this moment, the AEBS is providing excellent service to three wired Macs, an MBP, and a PowerBook G4, and supporting two networked printers. Performance has been perfect, and the two wireless machines can get a full signal anywhere in out largish house including downstairs (router is upstairs), on the front porch, and on the deck.
If you have more than one computer or need to network a printer, definitely consider the Airport Extreme Base Station.

  • IMac, Netgear wireless router & Airport express

I've recently purchase my first apple mac: a iMac G5 and would appreciate some help regarding my wireless set-up. In a nut shell...
I have netgear wireless ADSL router in one room (physically connected to a PC but that's not really relevant). The next nearest wireless 'thing' to this is my iMac. The iMac easily connected to my wireless network and works great.
In another room (nearer the iMac than the netgear router) is my airport express, which I want to stream music to from itunes on the iMac. It works, but is only just in range and the connection drops frequently (so is not suitable for playing music through).
My question really is, (without purchasing further kit - or moving the existing kit around), can the airport card in the iMac be used to extend the range of the network? (it seems to me as if the airport extreme is connecting through the netgear router that's further away rather than the iMac).
Or perhaps, is it possible for me to have the iMac simultaneously connected to 2 networks: 1 connecting it to the netgear router (and therefore the web and the windows PC), and a 2nd network just between the iMac and the airport express (to just steam music).
Any thoughts or help would be gratefully received...
    PS
So far I've dead impressed with the iMac and the software too - it's a chore to come to work and have to use a windows box!)

Dan, Welcome to the discussion area!
...can the airport card in the iMac be used to extend the range of the network?
Sorry, but no that won't work.
Or perhaps, is it possible for me to have the iMac simultaneously connected to 2 networks: 1 connecting it to the netgear router (and therefore the web and the windows PC), and a 2nd network just between the iMac and the airport express (to just steam music).
No, the iMac can not simultaneously be the client of a wireless network and act as a server on a wireless network.

  • Time Capsule/Third Party Router/Airport Express/Printer/MacBook/27 in. iMac

I could really use some help.
I have a Gigaset router hooked up to my broadband connection. That is connected to my Time Capsule via an ethernet cable. I use the wireless off the Time Capsule for both my MacBook and my 27 in iMac (which is located in another room), that is hooked up to my HP LaserJet printer. I have an AirPort express that I want to have in my iMac room so that I can print wirelessly from my MacBook and eventually from my iPhone (but I don't need to figure that out yet). I can not seem to get my Airport Express to connect to my Time Capsule. Thanks for your help!

Most likely not, as very few non-AirPort routers are WDS-compatible with the AirPorts.

  • Netgear WGR 614 Router & Airport Express

    Hello everybody
I would like some help with setting up my new Airport Express. This is my set up:
eMac connected to Netgear WGR614 router via ethernet cable
Broadband modem (Telewest / Virgin Media) conected to Netgear WGR614
Toshiba Lap to with wirless card installed
All of the above work like a dream
I have networked both my Mac & PC and can share files / print / and surf the web
I am running Leopard on my eMac, when I installed the set up disc it said this disc does not support this OS - very strange. I plugged in my Airport Express to the wall, and I went to Airport utility with in Utilities - scanned my network and got nothing.
I hard wired my Airport Express to my Netgear router - Nothing!

Hi Nick, welcome to this section of the Discussions.
You will sometimes have to answer a few questions before your answer is handed to you. <wink>
    1) Do you already have a broadband (DSL, Cable) internet?
    2) Do you have an ethernet cable coming OUT of your broadband device?
    3) If so, is that ethernet going into the computer, now?
    4) Have you browsed the netgear website for your documentation? (I have: http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/wgr614.asp
Somewhere on this device, there's a reset button. A router from ebay should probably be Reset...before you try to connect it. That way any previous owner's info will be wiped out. (power up router, find reset button, push & hold it in 5-seconds. A small paper clip may be required for this task).
Then you can follow the instructions from Mfr.
    ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/wgr614v4installguide.pdf
(Hint: the ethernet cable that has been going to the mac will now go to the WAN/Internet port on the router. An extra ethernet cable should then go from LAN port on router to <--> port on Mac).
Wireless configuration can then be done (SSID, encryption, etc.) refer to the manual foind at mfr's website...
Hope some of this helps. Good Luck

  • Phoneline - DSL Moden - Wireless Router - Airport Express

Is it possible? My DSL line runs into my modem which continues to a crappy D-Link wireless router. I then wire an outgoing ethernet cable from the D-Link to my Airport express. I can join the network but I can't get on the internet. Any suggestions?

Never mind, I found it all by myself.

  • Networking Router/Airport Express Question

I have my cable modem going into a router, then out of the router I'm going to a mac mini (that has no airport) and to an airport express. Is it possible to see the mac mini from the other 2 computers connected thru the airport, preferably thru appletalk?
    thanks

You don't use AppleTalk. Just turn on file sharing in the Sharing preferences. Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "sharing" to find out more.

  • Asante router, airport express; trying to make a network wor

I have two G4's connected to an Asante router which is connected to a cable modem. I can connect to and from these two computers, however my powerbook( connects to the airport express which also is connected to the router) can't connect to either G4 and visa versa. I don't see it (go>connect to server) Any tips? Or can it even be done?

All you need to do is disable the router built into the Airport Express. Run the Airport Admin Utility, select your Express, click Configure, click the Network tab, uncheck the setting to "Distribute IP addresses", and update settings to the Airport Express. Then restart all wireless computers, to force them to renew their IP address (which will now be provided by your Asante router).

    Hello Everybody,
I just installed the Linksys wireless router to share Internet and printer - works fine with my G5.
But - now I cannot see the airport station anymore which I used to transfer music to different rooms. If I start Airport exp. administration programm, it shuts down the wireless connection to the router.
    So how to install now?

  • Extreme base station+express "n" as booster

    Hi
I'm having difficulty connecting my AX 1264 as booster to my AE (802.11n)
i read the threads, so i know the general procedure. however when i went to AU->wireless mode->extend a wireless network->wireless network name  the network on my AE is not listed. I wonder if it could be because i'm running osx 10.4.11 and AU version 5.4.2 (lates update for my osx). do i need 10.5+ OSX to do this? or am i missing a simple step?

in my case all the airports Express are hardwire to the Router.
How should I set it up. from reading threads here I think that I should make them as "join a Network"
If the AirPort Express devices are connected to the router using a wired Ethernet connection, the configuraton of each Express would appear as follows below. I assume that you will assigning a different name to each AirPort Express to allow them to be easily identified:
    AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab located just below the row of icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the main router's wireless network
No check mark needed next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) or similar mode to the main router
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Same security setting as the main wireless router
Wireless Password = Same password as the main wireless router
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
    Update to save settings
    Restart the entire network

  • Remoting from Work?:  Cable Modem Vonage Router Airport Express Computer

    Hey all.
I'm trying to set up my network at home so that I may connect to my home network while at work. My setup is in my subject line. I can "remote" local computer to local computer just fine within my LAN, however, when I try to connect from work, I have no such luck. I would assume this is because I have not set up port forwarding correctly, yet all attempts thus far have failed. I have tried to simultaneously open particular ports on all my devices, yet from the outside, the ports still don't seem to be open for me. Can anyone offer any suggestions to enable me to remote in to home from work?
I realize that I have probably been pretty vague on details, so if there are any specifics you need, let me know.

Alright, so I "think" that I configured the Airport Utility properly. I obtained my external router IP address. Remote Desktop is enabled on my Mac. I forwarded the port within my router (Vonage). When I try to connect to my Mac from work, I still get a message that it is unable to connect. What could I be doing wrong?
And of course, I can connect remotely (local computer to local computer ) within my LAN just fine.

  • DSL Modem to Router to Airport Express ??

I am trying to setup a network at home. I recently bought a D-Link DI-604 wired router to plug into my DSL modem so I could connect my eMac with an ethernet cable and my MacBook Pro with Airport Express. I have it setup so the DSL modem is connected to the D-Link router and then their are two cables running from the router. One is going to the emac directly and the other is going to the Airport express.
If I don't use the router then I have no problems surfing the net with the DSL modem to Airport Express on my MacBook Pro. The problem I'm having is when I split the connection with the D-Link router. After running the connection wizard built into the router, I can surf the net on both computers temporarily but when I turn both computers off and then back on again a few hours later I've lost the net connection and I have to reboot the router and run the wizard again.
I didn't do much research before I set this up because I assumed it wouldn't be a problem. However, now I'm beginning to suspect that connecting a router (DLink) to another router (Airport Express) might be the problem.
If anyone can address this issue I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
    MacBook Pro 2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hey there Other Tim,
    Welcome to the forums!
I'd recommend setting up the D-Link router with only the eMac connected. Once it's up and running, join the Airport express to it. I would recommend resetting the AEX:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044
Once you've got it going, go into Airport admin in the Utilities folder, click configure, and disable "Distribute IP addresses" under the Network tab.
I'm pretty sure that will work.

  • AirPort Express drop-out / skips -- Windows XPSP2 w/ Linksys WRT54GS router

    Hello,
I'm having some skipping / drop-out issues when streaming music from a Windows XPSP2 fileserver, which runs iTunes 7.3.2.6, to my AirPort Express. I've long suspected my LinkSys WRT54GS router. Here are some things I've tried:
    * tried enabling logging on my AirPort Express unit, (I actually installed a Windows SysLog client and ensured it was working) but it reveals no useful information after a skip -- just debug logging. No change.
    * changed the wireless channel from 6 to 11. No change.
    * Do not have wireless security enabled (just don't broadcast ESS ID). No change.
    * Latest firmware on router, AirPort Express, and iTunes. No change.
    * All other wireless devices in the house turned off. No change.
I'm seriously considering buying a new wireless DSL router to see if it makes the problem go away (any suggestions to makes or models appreciated). Unfortunately my WRT54GS is not one of the routers that supports reflashing with a third-party firmware, or I would have done this eons ago.
Another thing I am not sure how to test is the signal strength that the Airport Express gets from my LinkSys WRT54GS router. I've not been able to figure out how to get this information, and I also do not know what are considered good / not-good strengths. Any help here would be great.
    Here are some details.
AirPort Express with Firmware 6.3, communicating wirelessly over Channel 11 to my LinkSys WRT54GS router with firmware 1.52.0, into which my Windows XPSP2 fileserver is physically connected with CAT5 cable. The music files are served up on a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 7200 rpm 300GB Serial ATA-150 Hard Drive.
I've really tried everything I can think of, and I still get skipping.
Specifically, music will play fine for 45 minutes, or 5 minutes, or an hour; then, the music will suddenly stop. The AirPort Express will continue to have its green LED on, though. The music will resume 1-10 seconds later. This skipping will happen periodically for a 1-2 minute period, usually 2-3 times per minute, go away for an indeterminate amount of time; or, it might persist until I get tired and turn off my stereo. There is no pattern as to time of day so I don't suspect neighborly interference.
Other things in the house are an older 802.11b laptop, 5.8GHz phone, brand new microwave, and a few dozen Palm and Windows PDAs that all have their WiFis disabled, where appropriate.
Any suggestions or ideas would be fantastic. This has been a problem for a couple of years now which I have systematically (though unsuccessfully) tried to solve.
    Thanks,
    -Jeff

I haven't yet budgeted to buy a different router, but I'll respond when I do as to whether this was the fix or not.
Just an observation ... in your case, the music streams wirelessly from your laptop to your router, and then wirelessly again from the router to your Airport. That's 2 wireless paths it must go. In my case, music streams directly to my router with a LAN cable; then, wirelessly from my router to the airport. So that's only 1 wireless path, and even still I am experiencing problems.

  • Xbox 360 does not connect to Airport Express wireless network

I'm at my wits ends. I got a my son a wireless adapter for Christmas and for the life of me cannot get it to work. We have looked at all the discussion forums on the internet and did A LOT of trial and error and still to connection. On one occasion the xbox 360 wireless adapter saw the network and once it tried to connect is dropped.
I have a Wii, two windows PC's, a printer and a PowerMac all connected to my wireless router. The xbox and the Airport Express both have the latest firm ware update.
These are some of the things I have noticed and tested:
    1. Connection is Cable Modem>Vonage Router>Airport Express....wireless to Xbox360
    2. I have taken the vonage router out to go
Cable Modem>Airport Express...wireless to Xbox360 and still no luck.
    3. I was suspecting a double NAT and contacted Comcast to see if I could put the cable modem in bridge mode and they couldn't help me.
    4. The network is open (no security)
    5. The wireless adapter is a steady red...then when I tell it to find the network it drops out (LED turns off)
    6. I have tried to see if I have a double NAT but tracing in the network utility does not show anything.
    7. I have tried to place the Airport express in bridge mode and when I updated, it doesn't not come back up and I have to do a hard reset to communicate to it again.
    8. There was one instance when the wireless adapter LED was green for about 15 secs and when we tried to connect it dropped out completely (no LED light).
    9. I know it works because in the various forums I have read that people have it working.
I called xbox support and they were not very helpful...wouldn't even search similar cases...I have tried everything I could think of and I'm lost any assistance is appreciated.
    Victor

    Tesserax,
What is the make/model of the Comcast-provided modem? How about the Vonage router? Is this router also wireless? Finally, I assume that prior to introducing the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), the modem & Vonage router were working properly ... correct?
Thanks for your interest in helping me. To answer your questions:
    1. The comcast make and model for the cable modem is Scientific American Model#DPX2203
    2. The vonage router is ethernet hard wired connected between the cable modem and the apple express wireless route. The vonage router is model#VDV21-VD
    3. With the exception of the wireless connection between the Xbox 360 and AX; everything works fine.
    4. The AX is running Apple firm ware 6.3
In the discussion I have read of similar problems and have tried them all to no avail. I'm sure the is a fix to this problem because of people in the discussion groups have had the same issues. I don't suspect the wireless router because it has a steady red light and only turns off when we do the network test or scan for networks.
