  • Best way to start a new catalog for 2009 ?

    Hi,
What's the best way to start a new catalog for the new year, with all the keywords and all the presets of the modules (without having to export all the folders) of previous catalog 2008 ?
    Thanks,
    Dominique

Well there is a cost too in not being able to find all your images in a single step, and inconsistencies soon develop - eg a keyword is plural in one catalogue, singular in another. Speed or stability issues are not simply related to catalogue size, and I've seen decently-performing catalogues 50% bigger than yours (as well as slow ones of a few hundred images). Have you optimized the catalogue recently?
But if you think it's a good idea to fragment control of your picture collection.... Presets will be carried over to a new catalogue as they belong to the machine (unless you have the save with catalogue preference turned on). Keywords can be moved via the Metadata > Export and Import Keywords command. If you have lots of collections and smart collections, then maybe make a copy of your existing catalogue and then remove all the items from it - making sure you don't trash them of course.

  • Best way to force password policy on users within 1-2 weeks?

    We have a Server 2008 R2 domain.
I'd read that the password policy in GPO is only available for Computer Configuration, not User Configuration? Is that correct?
If so, that's not very flexible and will make things trickier for us.
And regarding enforcing a password policy with a GPO on our local domain, do you know of a way to force users to change their passwords within say 1 week?    (the only options I know of are on the AD User account properties check a box "User
must change password at next logon" (then you'd have to force them to log out) OR relying on AD's internal formula:
webactivedirectory.com/.../how-active-directory-calculates-account-password-expiration-dates .  The problem I see with the latter is if your user hasn't changed their pw for a year you'd have to wait a year+how many days you set for max password
    age?
    spnewbie

To add, the password policy is applied at the domain level and only works at the domain level. It's not the fact that it's at the "Computer Level" or "User Level" or not, it's the fact that it's only set at the domain level.
Account policies (Password, Lockout and Kerb), are all under the Computer Config because it forces it to apply to all user accounts that access all machines.
If you tried to create a password policy at any other level (any OU), it won't work. The only option is to use PSOs, as Mahdi pointed out.
As for that Spiceworks thread, I would suggest to post a question about a specific product to the product vendor's support forum for accurate responses.
Here's an excerpt from MOC 6425C Configuring and Troubleshooting Windows Server 2008 Active Directory, page 10-8 (and this applies to all versions of AD):
Active Directory supports one set of password and lockout policies for a domain. These policies are configured in a GPO that is scoped to the domain. A new domain contains a GPO called the Default Domain Policy that is linked to the domain and that includes
the default policy settings for password, account lockout, and Kerberos policies. You can change the settings by editing the Default Domain Policy GPO.
The best practice is to edit the Default Domain Policy GPO to specify the password policy settings for your organization. You should also use the Default Domain Policy GPO to specify account lockout policies and Kerberos policies. Do not use the Default
Domain Policy GPO to deploy any other custom policy settings. In other words, the Default Domain Policy GPO only defines the password, account lockout, and Kerberos policies for the domain. Additionally, do not define password, account lockout, or Kerberos
policies for the domain in any other GPO.
The password settings configured in the Default Domain Policy affect all user accounts in the domain. The settings can be overridden, however, by the password-related properties of the individual user accounts. On the Account tab of a user's Properties dialog
box, you can specify settings such as Password Never Expires or Store Passwords Using Reversible Encryption. For example, if five users have an application that requires direct access to their passwords, you can configure the accounts for those users to store
their passwords by using reversible encryption.

I'm trying to achieve a gallery style "lightbox". The site i'm currently working on will be quite small so a lightbox will be prefect for opening larger images. Does anyone know how the best way to do this in Flash.
Basically if i have the buttons on one page/keyframe, is there a way of calling these images (Graphics or a Movieclip even), and have them display centrally on the site.
An example of this can be seen here on a test site (all pre generated so unsure how it works):

  • Best way to view PDF page(s) with in a custom program

What is the best approach for viewing PDF page(s) in a custom program?  I know you can hook in Adobe PDF Viewer, but I need access to mouse clicks and location on the page.  As well, I need to control the scale and zooming of the PDF page(s).
I'm not looking to change the PDF file, but rather draw over top of the page(s).
Thanks for any help or pointing me in the right direction,
    Shayne

Actually, Ive already implemented an interface after throughly reading all the Acrobat documentation on Javascript within the PDFs. Its functional but not spectacular. It simply uses the setField function to get and set the values to the Field objects. It do this by posting messages to and from the web page that is hosting the PDF object.
I was wondering if there is a better way. It needs to stay a thin-client interface - nothing besides PDF Reader loaded on the workstations. I am currently investigating the several other methods but was hoping for some guidance.

  • LR5 on creative cloud - best way to share images and catalogs with team members

I want to establish a central image library of product photos.  I need team members to be able to see these images.  I have a CC account for teams.
Sould I creae a file repository in the Cloud and then create local LR catalogs for each person on their local machines...or can I also create a single catalog, stor it in the cloud and have everyone be able to open it locally?
There is quite a lot of contradictory info on this out there!
Any help or better suggestions, would be very welcome.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Lightroom is not designed to be used by multiple users. A Lightroom Catalog can only be in use by a single user at any point in time. When a Lightroom Catalog is opened the program creates a  file with the catalog name and with a .lock extension. This file prevents any use of the Catalog file and will automatically be deleted when Lightroom is closed. See the screen capture.
To be specific a "Lightroom License" is a single user license so if there are more than one user, a license would need to be purchased for each user.
In addition the Catalog file cannot be resident on a network it requires a physical connect to the computer.
The actual image files can be on a network so that part should not create a problem.

  • Best way to create tasks and assign to sharepoint groups

Hi everyone, I have a custom list which contains newsletter info that is to be seen by around 400 groups (they are stores) and then I need them to mark each list item as 'completed'
I have been trying to figure out the best way to do this and decided to keep the custom list and somehow link it to a task for each item in the list. We have nintex so was thinking of creating a workflow to create a separate task for each group (store) so
they can mark it as completed.
Is this the best way to go about it or am I completely off track?
Basically all I need is a list which contains around 30 items and around 400 groups (stores) which contain users (store staff) to be able to mark items on the list as completed so it recognises that each store has completed each task.
    Thanks

    Hi  ,
According to your description, you want to find the best way for creating tasks for 30 list items and assigning the task to around 400 groups.
For the workflow, it is heavy  that  you need to create around 12000 (30*400) tasks .  In my opinion, the best way is to do with a custom timer job. For more information, you can refer to the
    blog:
    http://www.splessons.com/2013/12/create-a-timer-job-in-sharepoint-2013/

  • Is there a way to force tablet mode?

Firefox defaults to the interface instead the tablet interface on my 9" tablet. (Not to be confused with the desktop vs. phone agent for web pages.). Is there a way to force the tablet interface without messing with custom display resolutions?

    hi raincity:
There is no way to force the tablet user experience. Firefox for Android should detect that you are on a 7" or bigger tablet and automatically give you the tablet experience.
Which tablet do you have (manufacturer and model number please) and what android operating system are you using (Kitkat 4.4, Android 4.3 Jelly bean, 4.2 jelly bean, 4.1 jellybean, Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0, etc).
It might be a Firefox issue ; it could be that Firefox for some reason thinks your device is a phone rather than a tablet.

  • Best way to deal with multi-track clips?

    Hi,
I'm editing a documentary using pre edited program masters and have been supplied the audio stems. Can anyone recommend the best way to deal with them so I can access any of the tracks within the main edit.
I've tried creating a compound clip and adding the stems but I only access to a mono track when using the clip in my main project. I've also tried creating a multicam clip but as my stems need to be split and spaced to line up with the main Pro Res file I don't seem to be able to insert slugs into multicam clip.
Has anyone found an elegant way to do this?
    Many thanks,
    Leigh

    Hi leiski,
Happy New Year, and Welcome to the Support Communities!
Compound clips are still the best way to approach this, because you have access to the stems at any time with a double-click.
The following resources may provide additional information:
    Audio editing overview
    http://help.apple.com/finalcutpro/mac/10.1/#verdcd1cc1
    Advanced multichannel audio editing
Final Cut Pro automatically groups channels into audio components according to how the channels are configured for the clip. You can expand the audio portion of clips to reveal and edit audio components down to the individual channel level. This allows you to apply different effects to different components and streamlines the process for making quick sound cutouts to a single microphone input or other fine adjustments.
Important:  Many digital audio file formats, such as AAC and MP3, use interleaved stereo files, which do not contain separate left and right channels. These files appear as a single audio component unless you change the clip’s channel configuration.
Keep in mind the following when editing audio components in Final Cut Pro:You view and change the audio channel configuration of your clips in the Audio inspector. You can change audio component names, add or remove audio components, and configure channels in mono, stereo, and surround formats. See Configure audio channels.

  • Best way for LWAPs to learn changed WLC IP address?

    Hello!
I'm implementing subnets at a customer's network, and one of these changes is to give a unique subnet to the WLAN users.
Since the APs store the WLC's IP address in NVRAM, I'm wondering what the best way is to get them to know its changed IP addres.  (I see that I can give the APs themselves new static IPs to use from within the WLC, but I don't see a clear way to tell them a new IP to contact for their controller.  After a reboot, they still are trying to associate to the original IP address of the WLC.)
I know we can go onto the console of each one and change it that way, but since these are mounted high up, that is not a particularly desirable solution...  ;^)
Thanks for any suggestions on the best way to go about making this change!
    Deb

If you have two wlc in redundancy configuration, you could always change one wlc address and make changes to the mobility groups and then move AP's over to the new ip wlc. Then change the other one and modify the wlc address in the mobility group again.
If you have one wlc and you don't want to use option 43 or DNS, you can always set the AP's high availability primary wlc info reflecting the new IP address. Even though you haven't changed the wlc management up yet, the AP's are still joined and known of that ip. So when you change the wlc IP address, the APs will already know the new IP address. I have just done this about a month ago with around 300+ AP's with no issues. You can use WCS/NCS or Prime if you have it, I just script the commands and paste it I tot he wlc CLI to make all the changes.
    Just another option.

  • Is there a way to force href="mailto: to use the default email client

I would like to use the href="mailto:" in my website to automatically open an email but the end user gets the message "There is no email program associated to perform the requested action..."
Is there a way to force to the mailto to use the and user's default email client?
    Thank you for your help

    Hi James -
That is the default behavior of browsers when handling the mailto link.
Please keep in mind that nearly half of website visitors do not have an email client as they are using mobile devices or public computers or web-based email like Gmail, MSN mail etc.
Please don't feed the spambots. Best practice is to use an HTML "form" in conjunction with a server-side forms processing script. Ask your hosting provider if they provide one for you.

  • What is the best way to set up my new Mac Pro?

Not wanting to screw up in a process I've not done with a brand new machine before, I'm looking for feedback on my plan for setting my new Mac Pro next week...
    The physical plan is this:
For RAM, I have four 2GB SDRAM's plus the supplied six 1GB modules. My plan here is to install the 2GB rams into the first four slots and install four of the 1GB modules into the remaining four slots for a total of 12GB's.
When the cost for 4GB modules gets down to reasonable, I'll buy four of them and bump the current rams down the line which will then give me a total of 24 gigs where I'll stay.
For my hard drives, I'm installing a 160GB Intel X25-M into the first drive bay
    http://www.intel.com/design/flash/nand/mainstream/index.htm
using one of MaxUpgrades' 'MaxConnects' kits. I will use this drive for the operating system software and my applications and their libraries.
Next, into the remaining three drive bays, I am installing three 300GB WD Velociraptors. Mine are the pre-'backplane ready' versions:
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?DriveID=459
so I have bought these sleds for them...
    http://www.maxupgrades.com/istore/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_i d=180
I own one of Sonnet's Tempo SATA E4P cards
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/temposatae4p.html
which, thanks to this forum, I now understand, with the correct firmware installed, function well so I will install it and be able to establish hardware RAID. I will create a RAID 0 set with the three Velociraptors and use it to store all of my data files.
Backup will happen on a 1TB WD 'Caviar Black' external drive connected through one of the Sonnet card's external eSATA ports and using the OS 'Time Machine' software.
And that's the physical plan. My question is about setting things up. The physical installation part is straight forward and I don't expect any difficulties but I'm wondering what is the best way to install the operating system.
Do I take a first step keeping the supplied hard drive installed, install the solid state drive into the next drive bay and then transfer the contents from the supplied drive onto the SSD or do I do the complete physical installation process and do a 'C' drive start up and install the OS that way?
And, do you have any tips/suggestions on setting up the RAID 0 set?
thanks for the help. I want to do this right.
    JQ

oh mighty Hatter, I knew you'd have helpful guidance to offer! And thank you. You've confirmed my anxieties about the Sonnet card; kind of a 'too much, too quickly' sort of thing. And it's not that Sonnet's not a good company. Just everything to do with new technologies and the growth curve we all, manufacturers and users, go through when they come out. And, for sure, the new Mac Pro's are new technology; the single biggest forward leap in Apple's top-of-the-line machines for some time far as I can tell. Just reading at Intel's website about the Nehalem's is a joy!
So, I will proceed now with everything except for the controller card, leaving that 'til later. In the meantime, I think I'll just happily run with the four hard drives all running independently. No software RAID. I know just those, the SSD boot drive plus Velociraptor trio's going inside of a 2.66ghz 8-core Nehalem Mac Pro is going to be a working pleasure. Heck, this way, I'll get settled in and used to the machine's speed, have a great time doing so and then, in however many months, I can jump into spending another chunk of money on an excellent RAID card, RAID card's dear Barefeats will have tested and reviewed for us, set up my RAID 0 set and head of to those new races watching my computer leap for joy! Could be that, by then, the cost of Intel 160GB X25-M's will have dropped enough that I can afford to go for a second and have a two SSD RAID 0 boot drive... Yummy!
Thanks for the help. Like I say, I knew there was useful guidance hanging on some limb within your personal kit, (otherwise referred to as your mind)!
Interesting to read about the problems people have had with Sonnet's 2.17 update in PPC's... In this computer, my PowerMac G5 dual 2.7ghz, I have a Sonnet 'Tempo Sata X4P' controller card. I downloaded and installed 2.17 and got the same troubles; no cut, no paste, no 'drag and drop' etc. It was miserable.
Mine, fortunately, magically corrected after running the 'permissions verify and correct' process in Disc Utility and, after a restart, all was back to almost normal but for one exception; the Sonnet card was no longer present or functioning including the four eSATA ports out the back. (I ran Tech Tools Pro 5's repair suites first but, and who knows why, it didn't correct the problem...) This one was absolutely in the 'who knows what the f_'s going on and why it disappeared but did' class.
Oh, the other remnant is that, when the computer goes into sleep, after about five minutes, the fans rev up, and up, and the computer's frozen; only access is to do a forced shutdown pressing and holding the power button, so I've had to adopt a 'shut down whenever leaving it for more than fifteen minutes' approach to this dear friend. Once I've fully moved into and established my new one (which should arrive today, by the way... Yippeee!!! Can't wait!), I'll do a complete restoration on this one including taking out the Sonnet card. Usually, I sell my old Pro's but, this time, I'm going to keep this one as a back up and just general second computer for times I might need it. It has been such a great and dependable machine. Keeping it seems the right thing to do.
thanks Hatter. I'll let you know how things go, including what happens with the SSD. I don't have speed test software so I won't be able to track it's performance like that guy in the post you gave me did...
    JQ
ps- Gotta love that ILLogic fellow eh? Talk about not getting the essence!

  • Best way to restrict access to documents (outside of the group or library level)

Hi, we're thinking of implementing SharePoint Server 2013 Standard Edition for our organization. Many of our employees are research scientists working on proprietary information. From the (admittedly little) I understand about SharePoint, if a user wants
to restrict access to a particular document to the 2 or 3 people with whom they're collaborating (and also have it not appear in the search results), they will have to email their power user to request that a new document library be created in which they can
store their documents. Is that correct? In this case, what is the best way to handle item-level permissions? Users absolutely want to have the freedom to restrict access to their documents themselves rather than being forced to go to their power user. Thanks.

    Hi,
Per my knowledge, if you want to restrict access to the documents to some users, then you need to have Manage Permissions permission to modify other users’ permission on the documents.
If you do not have the Manage Permissions permission, I recommend to ask the site administrator to create a workflow as below to remove the corresponding users’ permission on the documents which you uploaded. You can start the workflow on the document you
upload and then the permission of the users set on the workflow will be removed from the document.
    Best regards.
