Netra 440 on Solaris 8?

Hello there...
We have our applications running on Netra 1400/1405 system on Solaris 8.
I have two questions in this regard
1) Now we plan to migrate to a better / robust system like Netra 440. But Netra 440 comes with Solaris 9 or 10 (not sure). So wondering whether we can customize Netra 440 with Solaris 8 (by asking SUN while ordering). Is it possible? If it is higher than version 8, development effort is required and we don't have that much time to do so now.
2) What is the major difference between Solaris 8, 9, 10? Directory structures changed? Libraries changed?
For 440, please refer
http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/validateUser.do?target=Systems/Netra_440/spec
Please advice.
Thanks
Shiva Vaidyanathan.

Most code that runs on Solaris 8 should be able to run on Solaris 9 and 10 unmodified.
You can ask the System Handbook for OS support information:
http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_private/validateUser.do?target=Systems/Netra_440_R/Netra_440_R
That shows later versions of Solaris 8 are supported.
2) What is the major difference between Solaris 8, 9, 10? Directory structures changed? Libraries changed?UFS is compatible between all versions (but Solaris 10 adds support for ZFS). Libraries are always changed, but it depends on what you're doing as to whether or not that matters.
See also the "What's new in ..." sections of the docs for Solaris 9 and Solaris 10.

For 440, please refer
http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/validateUser.do?target=Systems/Netra_440/spec
That's the hardware specs page (which doesn't talk about required operating systems). The OS information is on the page before you clicked here.

    Hi,
We have here some problems at a new netra 440. In the OpenBoot Diagnostics we receive the msg:
WARNING: Device /pci@1e,600000/ide@d being marked with 'status' == fail
    SC Alert: /pci@1e,600000/ide@d fail
When the OpenBoot Diagnostics are finished solaris starts but only with a few processes.
the sun docs suggests a ide controller failure. But no actions are given. What can I do. Can this be fixed are should I arrange a replacement?

The only IDE device in that system is your optical drive.
I noticed that the OBP version is a tiny bit down-rev.
Did this system come from a Reseller ?
Or, perhaps, has it been sitting idle at your organization for a few months and just now been unpacked ?
If sold by Sun, I'd have expected to see the latest 4.17.x firmware.
Who installed the optical drive, the vendor or your staff ?
There may just be an incomplete installation of the drive to its IDE backplane.
Yes, open a service case with Sun's techsupport.
They'll get it sorted out properly.

    Please help:
    1. What is the total SWAP size for the machine?
    2. Why is there 4 lines mentionning SWAP on the df OUTPUT?
    3. With 8GB of RAM on this machine do I need to increase the SWAP?
    4. If yes how to increase the SWAP?
    Thanks in advance !

Swap can be a confusing thing. It's an overloaded term that people often use to mean somewhat different things.
    1. Determine the swap allocated for the system with swap -l. The number of blocks minus the swaplo value will give you the true count. Blocks are 512 bytes, so do the math to get a GB value.
    2. df output reflects file systems that are currently in use. In Solaris 10 there are a few virtual file systems that are backed by swap space itself. You'll notice all these swap fs components have the same size because they use the swap as a common pool.
    3. Sizing swap shouldn't be based strictly on the amount of physical memory available. While there are guidelines for doing precisely that, those guidelines are given for the general case (i.e., no information on the apps that will be running). Monitoring demand is key. swap -s and vmstat will both give you a good general view of the demand for swap.
But, if you're a guidelines sort of person:
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-5093/fsswap-31050?a=view
    4. The easiest way to increase swap is to make files that can be added to the overall swap space. I generally prefer this approach from the ground up, because it means I never have to dedicate disk space to a swap region. There are different steps for doing it with UFS and ZFS. Here's the ufs way:
    a) Pick a UFS file system with space on a disk that isn't hot. Make a swap file and add it to the swap space like so:
    - # mkfile 1024m /filesys2/swapfile
    - # swap -a /filesys2/swapfile
Then check the outcome with swap -l and swap -s.
In many cases I will add a swap file to a customer's system and remove the partition-based swap (swap -d) that they have. There is no appreciable difference in performance and the flexibility of moving swap can come in handy when a system has to accept a different workload with a minimum of downtime.

  • [Netra i] Install Solaris 8

    Greatings.
I've got an old Netra i (sparcstation 4) from a friend of mine. Now i want to reinstall i because he foregot his password. I'v downloded Solaris 8 from this site (ofcourse the Sparc version :D )
Now he did't boot from cd-rom when i enter 'boot cdrom' I've got the message 'Can't find boot device'. Now i tried about 7 diverent cd-rom drives. One of them did a little bit more. But that cd-rom drive is not good anymore (read error's). Other driver are 100% working, but not in this machine.
Do i need a specified CD-Rom drive or settings? What could be wrong?

The inquiry started over in the JDS forum, by mistake.
    http://supportforum.sun.com/sjds/index.php?t=msg&th=2115
As this is typed, it seems that only the more universal type of CD drives give success. (those that understand a 512byte cluster size in the boot sector -- historically the default)

  • Netra t1 105: Solaris 8 & 9 install failures

    Hi Everyone,
I have two (2) Sun Netra T1 105 machines, each with a single 360MHz Ultra SPARC IIi and 256MB RAM. Both have 18.2GB drives that have been wiped clean.
I am connecting using Winblows 2000 and Hyperterminal, serial port B, 9600,8,n,1.
I want to install a fresh copy of Solaris 9 on these systems, but I am having absolutely no luck. I boot from the Solaris 9 install CD and the systems just hang. I've also tried to do network installs, and they hang as well.
I thought it might be my Solaris 9 install media, so I tried to install Solaris 8 using several different releases - 4/01, 10/01 & 2/02. Each time, I get the same result - the boxes just hang.
I make it this far (serial, MAC, and hostid x'ed out to keep our security folks happy):
    Netra t1 (UltraSPARC-IIi 360MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.10.25 ME, 256 MB memory installed, Serial #XXXXXXXX.

This could be part of the problem. How exactly did you wipe the disks in the other machine, and what type of machine was it?I installed the disks into a Sun Netra T1125, partioned (using format) and newfs'd them to create basic file systems.
How about a "boot cdrom -s"? If it boots this way, does "format" see the disks ok?Tried this, same result. The systems don't make it past the licensing terms message.
As for the mini tests - I ran them against every device, and everything seems OK. The floppy test threw an error because I didn't have a floppy drive installed.
I have a 4 port QFE card installed in the machine - all of the loopback tests passed, but the transceiver tests failed. None of the ports are connected (no cables). The two built in Ethernet ports also passed loopback, and 1 passed the transceiver test (the other failed) - the transceiver that passed has a network cable installed.

Could I be experiencing problems because of the QFE card?? Doesn't seem logical, but.... perhaps I will yank it out and try again....

  • Netra t1 with solaris 9 fresh install on/standby switch

    Hi,
I recently installed solaris 9 onto my Netra 105 box. For the likes off me I can't figure out why the on/standby switch simply does not work since reinstalling. The only way I can power down the box is by literally unplugging it from the wall. I am a total newbie to Sun boxes (& solaris for that matter) & have had zero luck in finding any info specific info relating to this. Can some kind soul put me on the right track?

I have down precisely what you have recommended & the thing still won't go into standby. After executing poweroff from the LOM prompt It just sits there continually humming away. Yet it worked fine prior to the installation off solaris 9 from solaris 8. I have even reinstalled again, this time making sure to include the power management options. All reinstalls were done with the "initial installation" option.
Here is a screen dump off the unit booting & me executing the poweroff commnd:

Is it best to install solaris 8 first then do an upgrade.

Think I've gotten to the bottom of this.
I found this while setting up a jumpstart server on my linux box (Boy do I never want to have to do that again).
    http://www.unix.com/showthread.php?s=d2375b8773b38973e8fc741 0f9a000ab&p=68985#post68985
What it pointed out was that the boot cdrom has 2 slices one hsfs and one ufs, I suspect that during the install the netra for some reason has problems with this.

  • Netra T1 105 Solaris 10

    Hi there,
I sucessfully installed Solaris 10 on my Netra T1 105, but when booting from the Jumpstart-Server, I saw that the machine tries to use old informations that seem to be stored on the hostid-chip. So, I wated to ask, if there's a documentation how to erase or modify this information (hostname, ip-addresses...).
Also I wated to know, if anybody has an idea of updating the installed LLOMLite Software?
    Thanks for an answers
    Thorsten

Well, the SPARC machines only stores one thing; their hostid and ethernet address (ok, thats two things). When you jumpstart a SPARC machine, it makes an ARP request with its ethernet address, and then the jumpstart server responds with a hostname, the client then uses the hostname to find its IP address.
So you probably got an old IP/Hostname on your jumpstart server, if you don't there is probably another server on your network which has old information.
As to LOM; there used to be a patch for it, cant remember which one though.

Did you do a boot -r?
That will do a 'devfsadm' which does all the /dev stuff for you.
Do you have the latest Recommended patch kit to make sure all your drivers are up to date?

  • Attempting to install Solaris 10 on Netra t1 via external DVD-Rom

    Hello Experts,
I am trying to install Solaris 10 on my Netra t1 via external DVD. I connected the DVD-ROM to the scsi port on the back. System recognized the DVD but does not allow me to boot from it. I have done many things without any success. Following are the details:
    System info:
    Netra t1 (UltraSPARC-IIi 440MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.10.25 ME, 1024 MB memory installed,
Ran the scsi test and it doesn't report any issues:
    ok test scsi
    Probe-scsi-all shows the drive:
    ok probe-scsi-all
    /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/scsi@2
    Target 0
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318404LSUN18G 4207
    Target 1
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318404LSUN18G 4207
    Target 4
Unit 0 Removable Read Only device TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M14011009
    devalias also shows as cdrom1:
    ok devalias
    cdrom1 /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/scsi@2/disk@6,0:f
    cdrom /pci@1f,0/pci@1/pci@1/ide@e/cdrom@2:f
    ide-disk /pci@1f,0/pci@1/pci@1/ide@e/disk@0:f
    ide-cdrom /pci@1f,0/pci@1/pci@1/ide@e/cdrom@2:f
    ide /pci@1f,0/pci@1/pci@1/ide@e
I created devalias manually also with no help. Following is what I get when I try to boot from it:
    ok boot cdrom1
    Resetting ...
    Netra t1 (UltraSPARC-IIi 440MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.10.25 ME, 1024 MB memory installed,
    Executing last command: boot cdrom1
Boot device: /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/scsi@2/disk@6,0:f File and args:
    Drive not ready
    Evaluating: boot cdrom1
    Can't open boot device
I verified the DVD and it works just fine. I install the OS with the same DVD on Netra-440 system without any issues.
Please tell me what am I missing here or doing wrong. Please help.

    Sun-worshiper,
Thank you so much for pointing that out. I was loosing it.
Just in case someone else runs into this type of issue:
When you run probe-scsi-all please pay attention to the target. In order to boot from the DVD, I executed the following commands from the ok prompt:
    ok nvalias dvd /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/scsi@2/disk@4,0:f
    ok boot dvd

  • Solaris 8 on netra T1 error - drive not ready

Hi I am hoping someone can help shed light on a problem we have encountered. I inherited a couple of very old netra t1 with solaris 8 on them.  We had a major power outage whcih resulted in an issue with this server coming backup.  On first looking at it i was able to get into the server via lom command prompt, i ran the power down command to gracefully shutdown and reboot but on starting backup the server is reporting 'drive not ready' and just hangs at this point.
apologies but i am a solaris novice, any help would be much appreciated. I am hoping this is something trivial....
    thanks.

Just to update we suffered another power outage and returned to look at hte server to find different error messages appearing, this time the server was giving me the option to try and boot or go into single user mode, which i did and ran the metastat and got the following:-

  • Solaris Management Center

We have just purchased new HW from Sun (Netra 440) and with it we received a box with CD-s containing various Solaris Software. (Solaris 10 version). Among them Solaris Management Center. So I have a question: is SMC free to use with all its features coming on the CD or it is just a trial and after some time some features will be switched off?
    Dejan.

My main goal is to use this SW for system monitoring - alerting me if some HW / SW error occurs and alarming me via sending SNMP trap to other SNMP receiver sw running on other machine. Can it do this?

  • Weblogic run Error on Solaris~~~ Please Help

I have a Bizzare error and dont know how to solve it.
I have set-up one Sun Netra T-1 with a product called Cisco ACS
(Advanced Cisco Secure). This comes bundled with weblogic to interface
    it with Oracle database.
    Setup as follows:
Sun Netra T-1, Solaris 8 (possiably 01/00 release but dont know how to
check), Oracle 8i client 8.1.6 along with Cisco ACS 2.3.6 (which
    includes weblogic).
    All works well
However, I have setup another Sun Netra T-1 (however this time its an
    AC200) with Solaris 8 (02/02 release), Oracle 8i client 8.1.6 with
    Cisco ACS 2.3.6.
There is a script included with ACS that allows you to execute SQL
statements from the CLI. However, on this second sun, weblogic just
    hangs and waits.
The oracle client seems to work ok (I can run SQLPLUS to a Oracle
server) ie: sqlplus user/password@server-name works ok
I dont know where to star looking as boths systems are near identical.
ANY sound suggestions would be welcome.
    Thanks in advance

    capacityIncrement=1,\
    props=user=scott;password=tiger
-STOP the server with the attached WebLogic Console. (Do not kill -9
    the server... BAD BAD BAD!)
-Start the server from commandline (i.e. cd to c:\weblogic then run
    startWeblogic.cmd)
-Attach your Weblogic console to your server
-Click the "DATABASE" category; expand "JDBC Connection Pools"; view
the new pool "raghuPool" (You will only see this if all the above was
    correct and sucessful)
-To test this pool, go to C:\weblogic\examples\jdbc\oracle and modify
    the "simpleselect.java" file
    -Change the entries to have:
    Driver myDriver = (Driver)

    Connection conn =
    myDriver.connect("jdbc:oracle:thin:@209.157.221.36:1521:ORCL", props);
