NetWare Server Migration Utility fills volume on SOURCE srv

I am trying to migrate our primary NetWare 6.5 w/SP8 file server to VMware. One of the NSS volumes on the source server is nearly 2 TB in size with ~60 GB free. During the migration, that volume on the source server filled up to 100%, however, the migration continued to run (over the weekend), so it wasn't a big deal. However, at ~95% completed, the Migration Utility crashed on my computer (some Visual C++ error) and closed. Now, the volume on the source server is still at 100% usage, and I can't seem to "clean it" up. My questions are:
#1) Is the Migration Utility using source server disk space to "cache" the files it is going to copy? If so, can I stop it from doing that?
#2) What must I do to reclaim that free space on the source server?
Thank you.

You obviously have compression enabled on the source, but not on the
target volume. In that case the migration has to uncompress compressed
files on the source before it migrates them.
The "fix" for the full volume now is unfortunately to wait until
compression kicks in again for those files.

  • Does The GroupWise Server Migration Utility Change Case?

From what I've read, if I do a manual migration with dbcopy and use the "m" switch it will change the case of files (to lower) from the source server. Is this true?
Also, if I use the Novell GroupWise Migration Utility will that change files to lower case? If not is there a way to make it?
    Thank you for your help

Yes and yes :) The dbcopy -m switch performs lowercase and according to the documentation for the migration utility it also does the same:
Performs an operation equivalent to GroupWise Check (GWCheck) with the storelowercase option to ensure that all filenames and directory names stored in the guardian database (ngwguard.db) are also converted to lowercase.

  • Migrate File Server data from one volume to another

I am looking for the best way to handle this situation. We have a VHD that has a 4KB cluster size that is getting close to the 16TB mark so no expanding past that due to the cluster size. In the past whenever i needed to pull this off i would preload as
much data as possible with robocopy, then during a maintenance window take the share offline, do a refresh with robocopy then flip everything that i needed to flip drive letter and share setup etc.
I have the space to do a complete copy like this so that is not an issue. But other things to keep in mind are the data is deduplicated so we are talking 20TB total. The other is the backup of the File Server is done at a file level with DPM so DPM will
see this as a new volume and be an issue.
At this point i have time to plan and am just looking for ideas.

    Hi,
If you want to copy files/folders from one Volume to another volume, you could use the File Server Migration Tool (FSMT) or Robocopy to accomplish.
The tool can move all of the files from the shares on your original volume to the new volume.
FSMT and Robocopy will not copy Share permissions but only NTFS permissions. So if the drive letter will not be changed, you can backup and restore the Share permission with steps here:

  • New Mini Server - Can't see volume to migrate from.

I literally just opened my mac mini server (Lion Server) and as usual the setup screens started.  Once it said I could migrate a server I proceeded with that option. However there's no volumes that the Mini Server recognizes.  I am plugged into the LAN which has our Snow Leopard server, but it doesn't see that.
Is the mini server supposed to be able to see network attached Mac computers or not?  Do I need to physically plug our Snow Leopard server into the mini? This is stange.  Just opened a new machine and can't even get past the setup.  Is there a server migration assistant?

I have not tried migrating a server in this way, but I would imagine it would be a similar process as to how Migration Assistant works.
If so, you would either need the old server drive connected as an external disk, perhaps by using FireWire Target Disk Mode. It would not apply here, but if you for example had a Mac Pro originally running Snow Leopard Server you would be able to do a similar thing when migrating to a new Mac Pro running Lion Server by fitting the old hard disk internally and then be able to migrate from it.
In your case FireWire Target Disk mode sounds like the easiest option. See http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661

  • File Server Migration Source and Target Data Validation

Does anyone know of a power shell script/CLI command  or some other way to verify source and target data after a file server migration?  I want to make sure that the shares that are migrated from the source and target are an exact match. Thank
    you.

    Hi,
An example is provided in this article:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/heyscriptingguy/archive/2011/10/08/easily-compare-two-folders-by-using-powershell.aspx
    $fso = Get-ChildItem -Recurse -path C:\fso
    $fsoBU = Get-ChildItem -Recurse -path C:\fso_BackUp
    Compare-Object -ReferenceObject $fso -DifferenceObject $fsoBU
And actually Robocopy could also do this job with /L and /log:file parameter.

  • Source system server migration (new ip address)

    Hi Experts
We are moving our servers (source systems) to new boxes. The source systems will be copied to the new ones and the only thing changing will be the IP addresses. BW server will not be touched.
Do I need to create new source systems? I am hoping not to do this and, Are the deltas will be ok? Or do I need to reinitialize all the delta loads?
    Thanks!
    Daniel

    Hi Daniel
No need to create new source system...In fact without deleting the existing one, you wont be able to create same source again.
And do not delete , because that means you will lose all the DataSource.
Need to adjust RFC to point to different hostname /IP address.
In case any inconsistency happens , need to restore the source system connection from BW side.
RSA1-->Source System--->Resotre ...this will automatically adjust RFC connection. Search Forum to know the process of restore in detail if needed.
Delta might need to be re-initialized. Are you planning to clear all the queue before ( LBWQ)  server migration? Else you might end in some problems during migration if you are doing it by database restore method.

    Hi there,
The migration utility doesn't work when running Windows 2008 or 64-bits machines. This is already documented:

  • 9.3.1 Migration Utility gives "Project does not exists" error in log

In preparation for using Hyperion Reporting and Analysis 9.3.1, I have installed the following on a Linux test server:
    --Oracle App Server 10.1.3
    --Oracle Database 10g XE
    --Hyperion shared services 9.3.1
    --Hyperion UI Services 9.3.1
    --Hyperion SQR Production Reporting 9.3.1
--Hyperion Reporting and Analysis, Financial Reporting 9.3.1
Everything is up and running and I created a new user account in Shared Services to administer the system, and attempted to give it full access by provisioning it with all the available roles. I received an error message stating
"+OracleJSP: An error occurred. Consult your application/system administrator for support. Programmers should consider setting the init-param debug_mode to "true" to see the complete exception message.+"
I'm investigating that now, but the roles seemed to be assigned to the user anyway.
When attempting to migrate from HPSu 8.5.2 to Reporting and Analysis 9.3.1 using the 9.3.1 Linux x86 Migration Utility (V11333-01 from edelivery.oracle.com), I get the following error message in a test migration:

We've only one user-defined role in the source system that I don't think is giving us this issue, it is inactivated and "User Roles" was not one of the selected objects to migrate.
I would like to try taking the role completely out of the source system if possible, preferably through SQL applied to the V8 tables or through the SDK.
The error looks like it lies in the migration task following the user role provisioning, doAssignDefaultGroup* and is caused by getProjectNameByID*
The steps I have taken (for sanity sake) so far are:
--I've removed all associations with this user defined role in the source system (users, groups, and roles) using the administrative interface on the web.
--I've unchecked 'User Defined Roles' on the list objects to migrate from the source to target systems in the Migration Utility, but I still get the error.
It looks like it is trying to provision a user defined role in the target system, but it is not finding a default project by the id in the error message.
Are there any Shared Services steps in the target system that need to be taken besides creating a manager type user to use as a log in for the Migration Tool?

I turned on the jsp debug init-param for the system for more information about the error. I get the following:
    Request URI:/interop/jsp/css/CSSTemplate.jsp
    Exception:
    OracleJSP:oracle.jsp.parse.JspParseException: /jsp/css/provisionSummary.jsp: Line # 119, <bean:define id="appId" name="appName" property="key"/>
Error: Tag attempted to define a bean which already exists: appId
When I attempt to provision the user I created for administrative purposes, Ialso see the following:
--from the file SharedServices_Metadata.log I see the error:
    +2009-09-18 15:55:32,399 \[AJPRequestHandler-HTTPThreadGroup-6\] ERROR com.hyperion.eie.common.cms.CMSFacade - org.apache.slide.structure.ObjectNotFoundException: No object found at /users/admin+

  • You cannot install Mac OS X Server Update on this volume. (10.5.6)

    I hope someone can help!
I started with 10.5.5, but was having lots of problems with MobileMe. I have downloaded 10.5.6 which I have heard is more stable but it won't allow me to install it with the following error message "You cannot install Mac OS X Server Update on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update." I have then downloaded 10.5.7 which installs fine but does not fix my original problem and I know it is less stable that 10.5.6. I have tried to install 10.5.6 again but same problem. Any ideas of what I have to do to my HD to make it happen?
The main problems I am having with MobileMe is registering the computer (it wont happen), syncing (it wont happen because the computer isn't registered), and publishing iweb updates.
    Thanks, J

You downloaded the wrong updater version. You downloaded an updater for OS X Server but do not have OS X Server installed, hence the error. The 10.5.6 Combo Updater is here.
You will have to provide more information about the problem you are having with MobileMe. And, you should login to your MM account online so you can post your problem in their specific forums.
Before you install a system update I suggest you see the following:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the hard drive and permissions:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a bootable backup of your current working system:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    C. Important: Please read before installing
    1. If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
    2. You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
    3. The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update. While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. Download and install update(s):
    1. Use Software Update, or
    2. Download standalone updater(s).

  • System image utility - can't add source?

    Hello.
I'm running 10.5.7 server, updated as of July 21 2009. I created an image using disk utility (I put the source laptop in target disk mode). I created the image using disk utility. The image is of a 10.4.11 laptop.
When I open system image utility (version 10.5.7 build 351), I can't add a source as I think I should be able to. Any ideas? I would be happy to provide further information.
My goal is to create a netinstall.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hey Tony!
    {quote:}I'm surprised a search of these boards did not reveal anything as this has been asked before many times.{quote}
Mea Culpa. I did a cursory search, but not a proper search.
    {quote:}SIU won't create an nbi from a .dmg or .img. You have to mount the .dmg so as it appears as a virtual drive on the desktop first. Once you've done that launch SIU and it should see the resulting volume as a valid source.{quote}
I do have the .dmg mounted on the desktop as a virtual drive (it appears as white disk icon).
    {quote:}The rule of thumb with SIU is to use 10.5 SIU to create nbis for 10.5 client OS and 10.4 SIU to create the same for 10.4 Client OS.{quote}
Hmmm. So I need to find siu 10.4?
okies - I will search forums, and report back. Thank you very much for your help

  • Migrate DST Shadow Volumes

    Hi,
we have to migrate a server with shadow volumes to new hardware.
    Assuming the following situation:
    Source Server:
    - SLES11 SP1 OES11
Pool DATA 500 GB with Volume DATA 500 GB almost full (Primary Volume)
Pool SH_DATA 500 GB with Volume SH_DATA 500 GB almost full (Shadow Volume)
No more space left on the Server
    Target Server:
    - SLES11 SP3 OES11 SP2
    app. 2 TB free Space
What I found in the documentation:
Migrating with the Shadow Volume Relationship: Only 1 GB of data from the source server can be migrated to the primary volume Vol4 of the target server. If you need the data on all the volumes of source server to be migrated to the target server, perform the following:
NOTE:You require to stop the DST policies temporarily before performing migration.
    1.Stop the existing DST policies.
2.Create a project to migrate the data less than or equal to 1 GB from the source server to the target server.
    3.Perform the migration.
4.(Conditional) If some files or folders were open on the source server and did not get migrated to the target server, perform synchronization.
Synchronization must be performed before performing the next step.
5.Configure a DST policy on the target server to move the migrated data from the primary volume to the secondary volume.
As a result, there is space available on the primary volume of the target server to migrate additional data from the source server.
6.Stop the DST policy after the required data is moved from the primary volume Vol4 to the secondary volume Vol5.
7.Repeat Step 2 to Step 6 until the entire data is migrated.
Following the doku I have to perform 1000 migations for 1TB data?
Is there a smoother way to do the migration of the volumes?
    Best regards
    Nico

    But an other scenario ;-)
One of our customers has a FC-SAN and has several LUN's on it. some of these are DST volumes.
Now he get's an iSCSI low performance storage and want to move the DST volumes off from the FC-SAN to the iSCSI storage.
Both storages are visible by the Vsphere hosts, where the fileservers reside on.
    My plan is:
    1. create new volume on the iSCSI storage and name it DST_VOL2
    2. turn off any DST policies
    3. migrate the old DST Volume named DST_VOL1 to DST_VOL2
    4. dismount and delete DST_VOL1
    5. rename DST_VOL2 to DST_VOL1
will this work, or is there an other possibility to do this work?
    Best regards
    Nico
This may be changing since I was intending to refer to this when I said Pool Move:
    https://www.novell.com/documentation...move_pool.html
So hopefully the link Hans posted is only for DFS moves (which I'm not referring to).
IF the same rules apply then:
Well since we have some product limitations with the pool move at this point, I'm going to assume you're in a non-clustered setup?
If so, then I guess the only ways I can think of:
    1) If you're on OES11, I believe the max size for pools in 9 TB now? Maybe you can expand the Primary pool to be large enough to then re-shift the Shadow pool back and THEN pool move and then re-shadow it? Depending upon your VMware version, you may need to use RAW disks (I think in 5.5 you're still limited to 2 TB disks?)
    2) If you're going to use your above method, I think you'll need some significant downtime (I'm assuming you're using the same server, just diff. disks), because you'll need to break the DST shadow relationship, (not just stop the policies, literally de-shadow the volumes) which means users won't have access to their shadowed data and then do the copy/migrate as you mentioned.
    3) IF you were going to another/different server, then you could use the miggui with my unsupported method (or maybe it's supported now) which only involves a brief break of the shadow (just long enough to build the migration project so it sees 2 diff. volumes) and then away you go.
Unless someone has another/better way to move storage items and retain the shadow relationship? I'm not a VMware expert, but MAYBE (not sure) there's an option in VMware to migrate a vdisk from one to another (or the vmdk files??) while the system is online? But I don't think so. I know there's a storage migration, but usually that's the entire VM Guest itself, not just a specific disk.
But, IF Vmware has something nifty, you could have a VM Storage that's on the iSCSI and maybe "move" the Virtual disk to that new iSCSI storage, but again, not sure how that'd be handled or what would happen in the underlying OS. I suppose it's possible to have the VM LUN/Storage be on iSCSI, yet be presented to the Guest as regular SCSI storage since it's virtualized??
I know Massimo does lots with iSCSI and such.

  • Tiger Disk Utility filled up target AND system disk, CANNOT reboot!

I used Apple Disk utility to securely erase free space on a target drive on my laptop. Disk Utility filled both my target disk and system disk (system disk was not even specified in the erase procedure). Both disks have ZERO bytes free. The System disk will NOT startup and I cannot use DiskWarrior to rebuild the directory cuz there is no space. Tried using terminal to rm temp files, but it did not see the system disk.
    *Problem Path:*
    1) Laptop (Leopard OS X current version) video stopped working. Likely known problem with Graphics card.
    2) Connected G5 (Tiger) to Laptop via Firewire with Laptop working in Target Disk mode (data only mode).
    3) Laptop disk showed up as a disk volume on G5.
    4) Used Apple disk utility on Tiger G5 to securely erase FREE disk space on Laptop disk drive B4 taking it in to get repairs. Amount to be securely erased was appr 65 to 70 GB.
    5) Left G5 Tiger disk utility to work overnight... had to interrupt next day. Restarted..
    6) Next day, the G5 disk utility said that it would be an est. 97 hours to complete. Stopped process.
    7) Both target disk and system disk showed that 0 bytes (yes, ZERO bytes free) were free on either drive.
    8) Attempted to restart with literature saying that you can restart Disk Utility as though it would delete temp files and start again. System could not be found (folder/face/folder/face showed on the screen)
*Attempted Solution:* (DW ~ DiskWarrior 4)
    1) Started system up using DW CD. System disk came up as unknown.
    2) Used Disk Warrior to rebuild directory on disk, but I believe that there is NO space at all. Disk Warrior took a very long time...more than an hour.
    3) Terminated DW (it was still verifying directory)
    4) Restarted system from Tiger install.
    5) Attempted to use Tiger Disk Utility to verify system disk (System still can see it, but won't mount it-- name is now disk1s3 or something like that). Disk Utility said that disk directory had problems and needed to be repaired. Ran the repair, but Disk Utility said that it could not be repaired.
    6) Quit Disk Utility and entered into the terminal to see if I could access the disk through unix commands. Access volumes from root. Only the other disk on the system showed up, not the system disk. So attempt to delete temporary files that MAY have been created by Disk Utility could not be done.
    7) Restarted system using DW. Drive showed up as Unknown. Clicked on [Apple key] rebuild to do scavenge function. Left it for two hours. Little to no change. Left it to work all night.
    HELP!
Will DiskWarrior use other volume on system or memory to save off or rebuild directory of bad drive? Anyone know of a utility that can help?
ANY HELP you can provide would be GREATLY appreciated. I have been put behind on research in my graduate studies and am in a terrible situation in now BOTH of my systems are inaccessible.

Hello HB3, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    8) Attempted to restart with literature saying that you can restart Disk Utility as though it would delete temp files and start again. System could not be found (folder/face/folder/face showed on the screen)
You really shouldn't use a lower OSes DU to work on a higher one.
    2) Used Disk Warrior to rebuild directory on disk, but I believe that there is NO space at all. Disk Warrior took a very long time...more than an hour.
    What version of DW?
Anyone know of a utility that can help?
If DiskWarrior can't fix it, you might try Data Rescue II...
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
(Has a Free Demo to see if it could or not, but you'll need another drive to recover to).
    Or FileSalvage...
    http://www.subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?%20mainpage=product_info&productsid=1
to recover what you can, both can work when Disks are unmountable.

  • How to setup Web Proxy within Server Admin utility?

Hi. We currenlty use the Web function within the Server Admin utility for all our web hosting applications running on Snow Leopard server. Recently we had a vendor create a website application which needs a proxy setup in order work. According to them, we need a proxy to 127.0.0.1:8000 for the site. At the moment, they manually edited the .config file for the website to edit the proxy settings which consequently caused the Web function within Server Admin to stop functioning properly as I found a website stating that if a config file is manually edited outside of the Server Admin, the Web function will not function properly. The error message I got was "Uncaught exception raised in Web client-side plugin".
The .config file which was manually edited is as such:
    <VirtualHost **.**.**.***:**>
        ServerAdmin [email protected]
        ServerName demo.segmentthis.com
        ServerAlias demo.segmentthis.com
        ProxyRequests off
        <Proxy *>
    Order deny,allow
    Allow from all
        </Proxy>
        <Location />
    ProxyPass http://localhost:8000/
    ProxyPassReverse http://localhost:8000/
        </Location>
    </VirtualHost>
I supposed my question is, is there a way to edit the proxy within the Web function of Server Admin instead of manually editing the config file?
I hope that made some sense but if not, please let me know and I will try to elaborate a bit more.
Thank you very much for your help!

Your question here appears related to or a continuation of this previous question — is this the case?
Based on the previous posting, whatever information you're receiving from the vendor support folks appears rather garbled or confused, particularly based on that "The vendor mentioned that we need to route the DNS and get it working (forwarded) on port 80 and I'd tend to avoid them." comment over there.
I'd ask the vendor for documentation and details (as on its face, a requirement for this proxy seems, well, somewhat questionable), but yes, you're probably in the Apache config files here, and probably using overrides and .htaccess if the site is low-volume, as that'll keep the changes isolated for testing.
Out of curiousity, is this proxy project part of an attempt to get this package to accessible, but without the vendor actually having the package running on port 80?  (Got a pointer to the package?  We can check the docs, and see if we can translate the installation requirements into something useful on OS X Server.)
Are you running 10.5 or 10.6?  Both are pretty old releases.

  • Server Migration

I'm having a problem setfing up migration on my Managed Servers on Welbogic 9.2 mp2. First, My problem.
When I try to manually migrate ManagedServer1 from MachineA to MachineB:
    Nodemanger shutdowns ManagedServer1
Nodemanager removes the interface with the floating IP (so far so good)
(here is where the problem starts)
Nodemanager brings up the interface back on MachineA
Nodemanager starts ManagesServer1 on MachineA (all this is suppose to happen on MachineB).
This doesn't help me if it migrates it to the same machine!!!
I quick overview of how things are set up.
    1) I have two machines, MachineA and MachineB running Solaris 10
    2) I have the admin server running on MachineA listening on the static ip of 139 and ManagedServer1 listening on the floating IP of 169 (fyi, don't want give out IP, so I made a number up)
    3) I have ManagedServer2 running on MachineB with the floating IP of 170.
    4) I created a weblogic user that has ssh trust config between the two machines and has the proper authority to create and bring down an interface.
    5) Created 2 Unix machines, Type SSH with the shell command ssh -l legalint -o PasswordAuthentication=no -p %P %H /opt/bea/weblogic92/common/bin/wlscontrol.sh -d %D -n /legalint/mtdom/ndmgr -c -f startManagedWebLogic.sh -s %S %C
    6) Network Time Protocal Config is set
    7) Lease database schema is created with corresponding data source and has two tables ACTIVE and ACTIVE_MT
    8) Server migration progerties configured: cluster datasource is set (In my directions it tells me to leave the Canidate machines blank). Managed servers auto migration set to true and primary and back-up machine set and auto-restart set to true.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Tom.

The best way to deal with certificates and FQDN's in ZESM is to use commercial issued certificates or from the company's internal CA. Don't use the built-in product self-signed certificates under any reason for production deployments. The reason behind that, is that the internal ZESM certificate has its private key marked as non-exportable. So you'll not be able to export it from one server and move to another.
For the server FQDN, create an A or Alias record in DNS to something like: "zesm.company.com", and point it to the actual ZESM server, that way, once you need to move all users from server, all that you need to do is to import the commercial certificate and point the DNS record to the new server IP Address.
I did a couple of deployments in that way, with no issues.
    Hope this helps.

    Subject: Server Migration
    Hi,
planning the upgrade to the imminent release of ZESM 4.1 we would like
to reinstall the server because it has undergone many installations.
For security reason and for don't stop production we want to install
ZESM 4.1 in a new server with the same ip and name of the actual then we
want try It in a test VLAN.
    My question is:
when we want to pass the new server in production or before ZESM
instalation could we migrate the IIS certificate from the old server to
new one? so the client should not be involved.
    Thank you for help

If they are the same platform/version you should be able to copy the database across as-is. The users directory entries (icsdwphost) will need to be updated to reflect the new hostname for the calendar server.
As with any move/migration, test and retest.
