Netweaver Basics

Hi Friends,
Iam very very new to Netweaver technology ........
So can anyone explain me in very basic terms to the following questions ...
1. What is Netweaver ?
2. What is the difference bet NW 2004 and NW2004s?
3. Is it mandatory to know JAVA language to sustain with NW technologies? or ABAP itself is enough ?
4. If JAVA is essential ...where to start with ?
Hmm .... yeah these are the questions as of now
Expecting responses ...
Cheers
Kripa Rangachari .....
I dont know where to post the Netweaver general questions ;(

Hi Kripa,
1. What is Netweaver ?

2. What is the difference bet NW 2004 and NW2004s?

<a href="https://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/devguide2004s">SAP NetWeaver 2004s Edition</a>
3. Is it mandatory to know JAVA language to sustain with NW technologies? or ABAP itself is enough ?
Its all depend in which stack you want to fit. If you want to go into EP, then JAVA is must. In XI having knowledge of JAVA will be highly useful and in other Netweaver stack it will be an added advantage. Anyhow ABAP is not enough to sustain with NW technologies.
<a href="http://www.sap.com/platform/netweaver/standardssupport/java.epx">Netweaver and JAVA</a>
4. If JAVA is essential ...where to start with ?
Core JAVA, J2EE in full is needed for Netweaver. As where to start is concern you can start with core JAVA and consequencely go thorugh J2EE.
I hope this will help you out.

  • Basic questions about NetWeaver

    Hi experts,
Here am I with a big headache caused by the Netweaver concept which I can hardly understand. So, I would be grateful if you could give me some hints on these questions even if they sound foolish:
    1. Is SAP-Gui an obsolete concept with Netweaver? That is, has the classical SAP-gui screen been replaced by a web site based on something like an Internet Explorer?
    2. If I have a ITS attached now to a classical R/3 to convert some screens to the internet protocol, will this ITS be unnecessary once I go to Netweaver? I understood that the Netweaver WAS incorporates something like an ITS.
    3. From my vague understanding of  WAS, I reckon this is the name of the new "Development platform" of SAP, sort of workbench, with the difference that from now on, Java will be a possible language, as well as ABAP, for development, and also other "functionalities" are part of the kit: an internet server replacing the ITS, etc. Am I on the right track to consider WAS as a new and extended workbench?
    4. All the classical R/3 modules are now part of the so-called "mySAP ERP". Right? So, let's say that mySAP ERP is the new brand which includes the old MM, PP, FI, CO, and so on.
    5. I have read some threads about the ECC, but I can't get to the real meaning. Is the portal a web development delivered by SAP with some ready functionality? or is it just a basis on which we have to actually develop the functionalities? Is mySAP ERP part of the ECC? or rather, is ECC something that is connecting to mySAP ERP behind?
    6. The easy-to-understand approach of a Development-Integration-Production platform in a classical R/3 schema, is it still valid with the Netweaver approach? I see so many elements in it (WAS, Portal, ECC, mySAP ERP, XI, etc) that I somehow get lost in this fuss and I can't see if Dev-Integr-Prod. is obsolete, and we need a hell of new systems to cope with it...
    7. Where do the xApps fit into this tricky map? is it something to develop from the new development platform (WAS)? are the xApps a sort of RFC that we can call from an external system? what is really an xApp?
Well, that's all for now. Either I get some help from you, or my head will collapse. Sorry, but I wasn't able to get help on these issues, with an easy-to-understand vocabulary...
    Thanks in advance.
    Ray

Hi Ray,  I'll take a stab at it.
<i>1. Is SAP-Gui an obsolete concept with Netweaver? That is, has the classical SAP-gui screen been replaced by a web site based on something like an Internet Explorer?</i>
Yes and No.   Currently you use SAPgui to access ECC 6.0 system, which runs on Netweaver ABAP stack, which is the latest release.  But I do believe that Project Muse may push SAPgui asside in the future.
<i>2. If I have a ITS attached now to a classical R/3 to convert some screens to the internet protocol, will this ITS be unnecessary once I go to Netweaver? I understood that the Netweaver WAS incorporates something like an ITS.</i>
I believe that is correct,  the ITS is a part of the Application Server.
<i>3. Am I on the right track to consider WAS as a new and extended workbench?</i>
WAS has been renamed to SAP Netweaver Appliation Server and it has two stacks.  The ABAP stack which you access via SAPgui and is the technlogy layer under ECC 6.0, and the java stack which runs underneath the SAP Netweaver Portal.    The NW Application Server ABAP Stack is the technology layer which includes all of the development tools and the system infrastructure.  The basic components which allow the system to run.  This is very simular to the "Basis" layer of eariler SAP versions,  but greatly enhanced.   Development done for the ABAP stack is done thru SE80 via SAPgui.  The java stack is a little different,  you do your development locally using NWDS and deploy your appliation to the java engine(stack).
<i>4. All the classical R/3 modules are now part of the so-called "mySAP ERP". Right? So, let's say that mySAP ERP is the new brand which includes the old MM, PP, FI, CO, and so on.</i>
Yes, all modules of the previous named R/3 are there.  my SAP ERP also includes other bolt-on applications.
<i>5. I have read some threads about the ECC, but I can't get to the real meaning. Is the portal a web development delivered by SAP with some ready functionality? or is it just a basis on which we have to actually develop the functionalities? Is mySAP ERP part of the ECC? or rather, is ECC something that is connecting to mySAP ERP behind?</i>
ECC 6.0 is the core component, formerly named R/3.  ECC  is just one part of the mySAP ERP package.  The Netweaver Portal is actually a bunch of java classes delievered by SAP which when deployed to your java stack allows for one point of entry to the users.  It is a role-based frontend.  You create iViews and assign them to roles and assign roles to your users.  The iViews can be running pretty much any application,  Web Dynpro ABAP, Web Dynpro Java, BSP, JSP, etc, etc.   The are SAP Delivered business packages that you can deploy that are standard applications.
<i>6. The easy-to-understand approach of a Development-Integration-Production platform in a classical R/3 schema, is it still valid with the Netweaver approach? I see so many elements in it (WAS, Portal, ECC, mySAP ERP, XI, etc) that I somehow get lost in this fuss and I can't see if Dev-Integr-Prod. is obsolete, and we need a hell of new systems to cope with it...</i>
Yes,  on the ABAP stack, you still have the TMS(Transport Management System),  the java side also as something simular, it is called the JDI,  or NWDI.(Netweaver Development Infrastucture)  and it mimics the TMS on the ABAP, sort of.
<i>7. Where do the xApps fit into this tricky map? is it something to develop from the new development platform (WAS)? are the xApps a sort of RFC that we can call from an external system? what is really an xApp?</i>
    Can't answer that one.  Sorry.
Hope this was a little helpful.

  • Basic difference between WAS and Netweaver

I justwant to a know a basic fundamental question. What is the basic difference between web application server and Netweaver. I am always geting confused in these two terms. Can anybody please explain?

    Hi,
    NetWeaver is:
An application and integration platform that unifies people, information and business processes
New technical foundation for all future SAP applications
    A replacement for BASIS framework
A platform that is based on Enterprise Services Architecture (ESA); SAP hopes to release future product offerings in compliance with ESA
    NetWeaver is NOT:
    A product or a language
    A replacement for SAP R/3!
    A marketing strategy
The SAP Web Application Server is the technical platform for SAP NetWeaver, providing the complete infrastructure to develop, deploy and run all SAP NetWeaver components, the mySAP Business Suite, customer- developed applications and 3rd-party J2EE 1.3 compliant applications.
SAP Web AS fully supports both the proven ABAP technology and the open source internet-driven technologies—Java and Java 2 Enterprise Edition, also called J2EE.

  • A few basic questions about NetWeaver

Hi, I am really new to SAP and to NetWeaver, i usually work with ASP.net and other data sources, let me tell you a little bit of my scenario:
Right now, i've changed job, and now I am facing a totally new environment, SAP is one of the things we use to drive our data reports monthly, but to get to the desired information, there are many steps to get it, like:
    1- Run a Sap report
2- Export it to a .txt
3- import the file in MS Excel, and apply a Macro to parse it
4- Copy and paste the results into a separate Excel, to send it.
Obviously one of the things i want to help my company is to automate as much as possible the processes to get the final report, and well i though:
"Why don't i connect directly to SAP from .NET?"
I read a little about it and then is when i hear about NetWeaver, a separate layer of SAP, that can interact with .NET.
    My questions are:
1 - Is NetWeaver a client solution, i mean, at the end i leave the SAP server alone, and just install the software with new connection libraries in my computer?
2 - Can i query the same reports I am running inside ..Net and work with the results locally?
3- Can all this happen inside Visual Studio 2003
Thanks to all your help, i really want to convert this into a huge project of migrating all the manual processes into automated reports, any ideas, and suggestions are welcome, ideas on how to connect SAP to .NET, third party components, documentation, examples.
    Thanks again!
    Edgardo

You can't run the report directly but if you make the same report run as a RFC enabled function module, whose EXPORT is the result of the report, then yes, you have access to that data in Visual Studio.
You can then integrate .Net with Excel.
In my case, what im doing is extracting customer data, and their respective sales orders to Excel. I have a spreadsheet, with VBA code. I fill a field with the customer number, press a button. It then does the following:
1 - Excel's VBA code calls a .Net library (DLL) that I created, using the customer code as import parameter.
2 - The DLL then calls a function module in SAP, supplying the customer number as an import parameter.
3 - The function module runs, and returns the data in table format to the DLL.
4 - The DLL returns the data to VBA in Excel.
5 - I process the data, and write it to the cells.
The .Net library was created using Visual Studio 2003 with SAP .Net Connector 2.0.
Hope this helps you get a picture of what you can do.

  • Basic knowledge about Sap Netweaver, Web As, Web Dynpro

    Hi guys,
I am a new nut guy trying to understand Sap NetWeaver. Could you guys explain to me just briefly in the most simplest ordinary terms about points below. I tried to read documentations but do not understand completely.
    1) What is Sap NetWeaver? Does it comes with several components?
    2) What is Web AS?? what does it serve?
    3) I heard about Web Dynpro for Java and Web Dynpro for Abap. They are used to develop Web applications in Java language and the other in Abap language. I'm interested just on knowing the Java side.
I just want to understand the hardware systtem achitecture and associated software to be installed.
Now for Java, I heard that we need to install Web Developper Studio, rite?? then which version should I install, Sap Netweaver SP16 or Sap Neweaver 2004 or Sap Netweaver 2004s?? where can i find it?? should it be installed in front end station? do i need Java?
Now for Web AS, where do i install it??
I'm totally new in Sap NetWeaver
    Thanks a lot guys

Hi Ralph, I will try to keep it simple.
    <i>
    1) What is Sap NetWeaver? Does it comes with several components?
    </i>
SAP Netweaver is the platform in which all SAP software runs on top of.  For example R/3 ran on the "Basis" layer,  this is simular in ECC6.0, where ECC is the R/3 part and Netweaver(ABAP stack) is the "Basis" Layer.  With Netweaver you get two stacks, ABAP and Java.  SAP components run on one or the other.  Netweaver includes, but is not limited to:
    Netweaver Application Server(formerly called WebAS)
    Netweaver Portal(formerly called EP)
Netweaver XI(I think there is a new name for this)
    etc.
    <i>
    2) What is Web AS?? what does it serve?
    </i>
WebAS is now called Netweaver Application Server, this is the basis for all applications, whether ABAP or java based.  For example the ECC(R/3 component) runs on the ABAP stack of Netweaver Application Server,  the Netweaver Portal runs on the Java stack of NW Application Server.
    <i>
    3) I heard about Web Dynpro for Java and Web Dynpro for Abap. They are used to develop Web applications in Java language and the other in Abap language. I'm interested just on knowing the Java side.
    </i>
For the java side, you develop the webdynpro applications locally on your laptop using NWDS(Netweaver Developer Studio) and then deploy this application to the Netweaver Application Server(java stack).  You can then implement the application into an iView in the NW Portal.
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/15/0d4f21c17c8044af4868130e9fea07/frameset.htm
    <i>
I just want to understand the hardware systtem achitecture and associated software to be installed.
    </i>
Which NWDS to install depends on the version of the java engine in which you are working with.  The rule is that you keep the version of NWDS in sync with the version of the Netweaver Application Server(java engine).   Usually the NW AS, is intalled on a standalone server(not your laptop), but you can install sneak preview editions on your laptop for testing .
I hope this helps a little.

  • Some basic questions on Java development and NetWeaver CE

    Hi there,
Can someone please explain for me:
    1. What are the development tools that will help me do Java development in SAP?
    2. Can I use non-SAP Java development tools (e.g. WebSphere or Eclipse) to develop custom extensions?  Are these equivalent to the functionality provided by CE?
    3. Given the options for doing Java development in SAP, are there any situations where I would need to do custom development in ABAP? (Is the Java functionality equivalent to the ABAP functionality?)
    4. Is NetWeaver CE only meant for Java development, or can it also be used for ABAP development?
    regards,
    Eric

    Hi
for Java development you can user Eclipse or NWDS , which are both and the same .
And about the ABAP development in CE 7.1 in the developer studio is it not possible .
you are allowed for the java development .  And about using Non-SAP java development tools
you can use the tools for java development , may the UI building ..... has to be build  when compared to
      CE 7.1  developer studio

  • Basically, what is NetWeaver?

I would just like to clarify as to what is NetWeaver? What role they play in the installation of an SAP Netweaver System? Where do the Web AS come in? It is said that SAP Web AS replaces the Basis Framework, on that note, where does NetWeaver fit in? I would just like to deepen my knowledge with regards to this. Awards will be provided accordingly depending on the knowledge gain that will be acquired.

SAP Netweaver is a comprehensive tecnology integration platform. But what makes it different from R/3 is that it can integrate seamlessly with all the other components of SAP in providing various product solutions to the business:
Before we talk about the various integrations, there one common factor for all of these components WEB AS (application server). WEB AS is the BASIS platform on which has to installed as a base for using any of these components
So what does People Integration, data integration and process integration mean:
The solution provided by SAP for people integration is EP (Enterprise portal). As the name suggests this is browser based and links to the business' SAP servers. Earlier people where only able create, modify or delete data on SAP by logging in through SAP GUI or web based GUI. Now this can be done by any one with a browser and user ID and password. What make this possible is JAVA (J2EE) The SAP architecture is now compatible with J2EE thereby making it possible.
Similarly lets say the business wants to analyse the DATA created so far in the SAP system (purchase orders, sales orders, general ledger details etc). The SAP product here is BI (Business intelligence). This comes under Data integration
But unlike Enterprise portal, BI is not dependent on J2EE architecture but on ABAP architecture. This determies the configuration of the Web AS.
    The three variations are:
    Web AS - ABAP
    Web AS - ABAP+J2EE
    Web AS - J2EE
Based on the products being implemented by the business, the WEB AS config is determined
Process integration comes into picture where the Business uses SAP and its trading partners use other similar Enterprise resource planning software. In such cases and interface is require for transfer of data and also data mapping.
This requires extensive programming. The solution provided by SAP for this is XI - Exchange Infrastructure.
SAP Netweaver is providing various solutions for varied business needs in such a way that these solutions (products) intergrate with each other seamlessly.
    Regards,
    Prashant

  • Is Netweaver CE Basically a Java only Netweaver install

I am being told the new version of Vendavo runs on Netweaver CE platform where as our current version is installed on a Netweaver Java only stack.

yes, NW CE is java only.

  • What is the diff b/w web as and Netweaver 7.0.

    hi
SAP 4.7 is based on Web AS
ECC 6.0 is based of Netweaver 7.0.
    pleze illusterate this one

Now SAP evolved into using the Internet technology and is called as service oriented architecture (SOA). There are lots of functionalities available in ECC 5.0 and ECC 6.0 compared to R/3 in integrating with other systems. Probably to understand the specific release dependent changes, you can go thro the help documentation. For example to understand the diff between ECC 6.0 and ECC 5.0
    1.      ECC 6.0 enables Business area posting - Segment reporting made easy.
    2.      Profit center accounting is through new GL.
    3.      Document splitting: Split of entry to post assets and liabilities to respective profit centers. (Balance sheet items)
    4.      Enables commitment of FM, improved CRM feature & Mobile sales feature
Here are the list of Transactions not their in ECC 6.0
    QAS1 Download Insp. Specs. (Obsolete)
    QAS2 Download Basic Data (Obsolete)
    QAS3 Upload Results (Obsolete)
    QAS4 Upload UD (Obsolete)
WLF1K Report used to generate WLF1K is: SAPLWLF1
O07C Report used to generate O07C is: SSFPSEMAINT

  • Single Sign on in a 3 tier architecture between SAP Netweaver CE and R/3

    Hi All,
I am trying to implement SSO using SAP logon tickets in a 3 tier architecture between NW CE and R/3. But so far I have not been able to crack this.
Let me describe the scenario in detail:
We have two Java EE applications on Netweaver CE7.2 Application Server:
    1. UI: Just handles all the UI logic : js, jsp, css, html, extjs .It calls the Business Layer Java EE application to get data from back-end systems.
    2. Business Layer: Calls R/3 SOAP services does some processing on them and exposes the data back to the UI via a Restful JSON service (implemented using Java Spring framework)
Both UI and Business Layer Java EE applications define login modules to be used for SAP logon tickets. So the architecture is like this:
    UI-RESTfull-->Business LayerSOAP->ABAP R/3
So ideally when the UI link is clicked it prompts the user for authentication (uses CE UME) and then the UI applications calls the Business Layer which then calls R/3. This unfortunately doesn't work. The authentication between UI and Business Layer Application fails.
However if you remove the Business Layer Java EE application and call the SOAP service directly from the UI. SAP logon tickets starts working.
So I have been able to make SAP logon tickets work with the following 2 tier architecture:
    UI---SOAP--->R/3
    So my Question is:
Is there a way to use SAP logon tickets in a 3 tier architecture between NW CE and R/3 (For the scenario described above)? Any help/pointers/documentation links would be great

    Hey Martin,
To enable SSO I updated web.xml and engine-j2ee.xml for both UI and Business Layer application according to the login module stacks defined (the first one) in the following link:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_NW70EHP1/helpdata/en/04/120b40c6c01961e10000000a155106/content.htm
Initially both UI and Business Layer had the same entries for web.xml and engine.xml. But since this was not working I did all kinds of testing. For UI i used FORM based authentication and for Business Layer I was using "BASIC" authentication.
    I tested the following Scenarios:
    1. Without any changes to the above XML files: The Business layer rejects any requests from the UI . I checked the Browser and "MYSAPSSO2" cookie was created. Somehow UI doesnt use this to call Business Layer. Or the Business Layer rejects the token itself
    2. I removed authentication from the Business Layer application (Web.xml) keeping the UI same: The call went to R3 but returned a "UnAuthorized" error back. In this case also at the browser level "MYSAPSSO2" token was created but was not used by the business layer to call R3.
    3. The did all sorts of permutation and combination with the sample login modules provided (See link above) on both UI and Business Layer application . Nothing worked. All combinations led to two results which were the same as 1 and 2
It seems all this is happening because of another application in between UI and R3.
    Hope this Clarifies.
    Thanks,
    Dhannajay

  • Integrate a Web Module's JSP into an iView in NetWeaver CE 7.2

    Hi everybody,
I am not sure whether this is the right spot to post this, but I will give it a try anyway.
We want to develop an Enterprise Application containing a Web Module. Basically it is a Java EE application that has a business tier consisting of a couple of beans and business objects and a web tier consisting of JSPs and servlets. What I want to do is to integrate it into the portal content via an iView. We only use a web module in order to integrate servlets to handle AJAX requests made via javascript and because you can only make a servlet-mapping within the web.xml (as far as I know).
Now I have created both the Enterprise Application Project as well as a Dynamic Web Project in the NWDS 7.2 according to the SAP manual. My servlet class as well as the beans are contained within the Dynamic Web Project's Java source folder. In the Web Content folder are the JSPs, css and javascript files. I deployed that application successfully via the NWDS and I can see under the application console of the NetWeaver Administrator that the application is deployed and alledgedly started, yet I cannot see it in the PCD. Therefore I cannot directly include it into a page and by that make it available to portal users. Also, I cannot access the application via the url http://<host>:<port>/<url as defined in application.xml>.
    How can this be done?
Normally, I would do this by creating an iView from Template in the PCD's folder containing my designated page and role and adding it to the page as a deltalink. Yet when I try to do this, the portal offers me a long list of iView types, none of which seem to match my desire of matching a Web Module or Enterprise Application. Is that possible at all or what do I have to do to achieve this? I had no problem to integrate my application as a Portal Application, which is also deployed as an .ear, but that lacks the possibility to use servlets - at least from my understanding, since I cannot integrate a servlet-mapping into the portalapp.xml and there is no web.xml in a Portal Application.
I have been trying this for two days now and didn't succeed. Is it possible at all, and if so, how? Any help is highly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    Serg

You can use the j2ee telnet console and using it you can deploy the files
you can follow the example given in the note
743630 - How to deploy libraries on J2EE Engine 6.20
    after ADD DEPLOY

    Regards,

    Hi Laszlo,
The Java troubleshooting guide http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/index?rid=/library/uuid/dc49a7fb-0701-0010-88bf-f45221a97d15&overridelayout=true has some suggested solutions or trouble shooting steps for the MOS-01011 error - starting on page 19.
I also noticed that you only have 1.5GB of RAM but minimum requirement states 2GB, could be related, could not. Have never tried to install CE with less than 2GB of RAM http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/downloads?rid=/library/uuid/a0a6bd7b-3dfc-2c10-eb95-aae0f777d4ab ;-).
    HTH.
