Network a PC and an IMAC

I have gotten the pc and imac talking to the network on the airport extreme 802.11 but I just can't figure out how to tie these two together where I can share files. I have networked PCs togeather before and had no problem. You just assign a name to the workgroup and give that name to both computer and thats it. I just cant figure where to assign the workgroup name to the mac. I just seam to be going around in circles.

  • Help setting up small home network with PC and an imac!!!?

I have an imac in my room, and my mother has a JP PC in her room across the house. We have a router and modem on her computer(I connect to the internet through the router signal)
I just recently bought a new printer. It is a wifi printer. I was told by a friend that I need to setup a small netowrk so all the computers/printers in the house can talk to one another. Because right now my printer is installed and connected to the router signal (but my computer does not reconize it to print....)
I started a small network on my moms PC...but when I can't make a network CD like it tells me to because my computer is a Mac....how do I continue to setup this network? Can I set it up first on my mac as well???PLEASE HELP! I want to use my printer!

You can just connect the WRT54G wireless router’s LAN port to BEFSR41 router’s LAN port by using a network cable as specified in this configuring wireless router as access point article, after that can connect other computers to that wireless router with or without cable. Finally do more test to check the performance. Hope it helps.

  • Imac FaceTime unable to connect to network (safari connected and loading pages).

I have a brand new Imac, I have never been able to get facetime to work. It keeps getting hung up on the log in page, and eventually gives me an error message of unable to connect to network. Safari and other web based programs are working perfectly.
    Any Ideas?

How can I get my Mac to join an open 3Com wireless
network? The network is recognised but Mac is unable
    to connect...
The 3Com wireless router is connected to a broadband
router through a PC running XP.
Do you have two routers? That may be your issue. You should only be using one router, or configure one of the routers and turn of DHCP.

  • Networking windows 7 and iMac Mountaijn Lion

We have a Windows pc and a Windows Laptop both running Windows 7.  And an iMac running Mountain Lion.
I have set up my network Workgroup and can browse the Internet.  From the Mac i can access the two windows pcs and read ad write info.  Howevever, when I try to access my Mac I cannot and get the message "access is denied".
Has anyone any ideas what I should have done.  I have chosen sharing in my Mac and Windows pc's in the network and sharing centre.  I think the problm may be with the Mac set up.
I would be grateful to anyone who has had the same problem who could help me to resolve this issue.

By default the Mac is configured to share with other Mac's only. To allow Windows to interact with the Mac, you need to enable Windows sharing.
On the Mac, open System Preferences and select Sharing. Then select File Sharing and then press the Options button. Here you will see that Apple File Sharing is enabled. You will also see Windows Sharing. Enable this and then also enable the user name in the Accounts section. This name is what you use on the Windows computer when you are prompted to authenticate after selecting the shared folder on the Mac.
With the Windows sharing enabled you can then browse for the shared folder on the PC and authenticated when prompted.

  • Beginner question: Can I create a hybrid home network between an ethernet-connected iMac and an airport connected Macbook Pro using a hybrid router?

I recently acquired an friend's used iMac, I don't know anything about networks and all I can find is how to create a Wi-Fi home network but nothing about hybrid Ethernet/Wi-Fi networks.
I have the iMac connected via Ethernet to the wireless router.
I connect via Airport with my MacBook Pro
I would appreciate if anyone has any pointers as to how I can start setting up a network between my ethernet-connected iMac and WiFi connected Macbook.
    Thanks!

ethernet and airport/WiFi are just transmission media for the same network. If you can get internet on both computers, they are networked. Using the same router = same network.
So now, what is it you want to do? Share files between them?

  • Setting up network with newer and older AirPort Extremes

Okay, I thought this was going to be so simple. I have a newer (like a year old - square) Airport Extreme that I have three computers wirelessly hooked up to in the house. Great... so now, I want to hook up the old iMac in my son's room that doesn't have a wireless card to the network. It is too far away to use the ethernet cable into the back of my newer Airport Extreme station so I figured I'd dust off the old saucer type base station, plug the ethernet cable into that in my son's room and then just easily get the old base station to network with the newer one wirelessly.
Not so easy. The newer one has no reference how to make a network with other base stations whatsoever and the old book describes how to with the Airport Admin Utility which is not available to the newer version, just Airport Utility and it does not have the WDA options listed. I tried to extend the network and then Doh! The whole network disappeared.
Is this a compatibility issue with the older and newer base stations? Would it just be easier to put in a wireless card to my very old iMac, if that's even possible? Has anyone successfully networked an old and new base station together? If so how?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the discussions!
When you have an older "g" device (the flying saucer) and a newer "n" device (the square one) in order for them to communicate using wireless only, you must configure both of them in what is known as WDS configuration.
This is a quite tricky setup for most users. The best set of instructions that I've seen for this comes from expert user Tesserax in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2355832&tstart=0
If you elect to try this type of setup, you will probably need to hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the Wireless Mode selection box to get the WDS option to appear. (My guess here is that Apple "hides" it because it slows down the network substantially). But, it's the only way to do what you want to accomplish with and old and new device.
Other options would include the wireless card you mentioned for the iMac. Even better might be a pair of ethernet powerline adapters. One adapter goes near the AirPort Extreme and the other near the iMac. The AC wiring in your home transmits the ethernet signal of the powerline. Works great, almost no configuration required and better than wireless in many cases.

  • I want to hide my time capsule so a burglar cannot find it (we were broken into last week and our imac taken).

So, I would like to keep it separate from my BT wireless router. Is this stupid? Will my wireless connection be weaker as a result?
I would like my BT router to sit in the downstairs study with my macbook and replacement imac connecting wirelessly to it. Then I would like my time capsule to be hidden away elsewhere out of sight in the event of another break in. It seems silly connecting it to the router so that a thief could easily swipe it if they try to come in again - and then my backups are gone. But on the other hand, don't apple recommend that the time capsule is your main wireless hub rather than simply annexing it to your existing network?
Will the backups be much slower if the time capsule is stored elsewhere?
Will I be unable to connect my printer to the wireless network?
    Thanks, all advice appreciated

Interesting post.. first of its kind I have read.

Not stupid in the circumstances.. i hope you had contents insurance and got it replaced and had backups of your files.
You cannot wireless link the TC to the BT router.. you can ethernet connect them.. or use ethernet replacement like EOP adapters.

You can use it in bridge as a wireless access point plus hard disk. That will not affect the network.
Backup speed will depend on the wireless connection to your BT router.. that will be the issue. Unless you do some tricky stuff and use a secondary wireless client in the computer.. a usb stick could be plenty for the internet access but stick with TC for local lan.. but this might be getting too complicated.
Is the printer a wireless network printer or needs to be usb connected?
If the printer is wireless type then no issues.. but even that can be worked around.
The TC doesn't have wall mount holes, unlike the old discus version.. which was very neat.. On the other hand you can remove the rubber mat easily with a hot air gun and easily remove the bottom aluminium cover so to add wall or ceiling mount holes.. ceiling mount is excellent as a thief will probably never look there. or find it too hard to reach and if you screw it down well.. which you have to as it weighs a bit, then the rf radiation pattern is near ideal. Stupid apple for removing design features from one model (eg POE as well) in the old model for aesthetics only design.

  • How can I print to a IP address printer from my iPad and a iMac

I have a HP Laser Jet 1100 that I have converted to a Networked printer via TP link print server so I wont need a computer running 24/7, how can I get my iPad 4th Gen and a iMac to print on it, IP 192.168.1.13
    Thanks

I dont think you will be able to print directly to your ricoh printer.  It is not on the list of airprint machines, and none of the ricoh apps seemed aimed at printing from a pad.
You will need to get an app such as print and share, or printopia, etc and print via your computer.

  • Networking a PC to an iMac

I recently purchased an iMac desktop. I already had a Dell Windows XP computer. I just got Broadband (through Comcast). I got a wireless router. I have the iMac on the network that I created. I also purchased a USB adaptor for my Dell. I cannot get it on the network. It says that it is communicating; however, I cannot get online with it. I am a total novice, as far as the networking and the iMac. I have only had the iMac for about a month now. I have looked online for help; however, the things I have tried are not working. Please help!

Kindly mention the model of your Network Adapter and your Wireless Router...Also let me know what error do you get when you attemt to connect to your network...

  • Problems with wireless connection between new macbook and older imac

I have just bought a 2.0 ghz macbook core2duo and am unable to connect to my wireless internet network at home. My wireless connection is set up through the airport card in my 17" flat panel imac (i.e. I am using the imac as the internet base station). I had an old clam shell macbook (which just died hence the new macbook) and still have a 400 mhz graphite SE iMac which both connec(ed) to the network perfectly for years. But the new macbook will not connect. It will connect when connected via ethernet. The imac uses Tiger.
I have tried resetting the name of the network, using encryption and not using encryption, but nothing helps. The macbook appears to see the network (although no bars register in the airport connection icon) but I always get an error message when trying to connect.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

I am not actually using a router as I am using the airport card (non express i believe) in my iMac to send the wireless signal. My modem is Motorola but not sure which model. I have Comcast cable internet service

  • Tcpdump on wireless only shows traffic to and from iMac running tcpdump

    Hello,
I'm trying to run tcpdump to see traffic on my wireless network.
So far, I'm only able to see packets that are to, or from, the iMac
    that is running tcpdump.
I have NOT been able to get tcpdump to show me traffic between other
devices on my network, such as an iPod Touch and the outside
world. I'd like to be able to see DNS, HTTP, and SMTP traffic
so I can troubleshoot a device on my network that collects production
data from a solar photovoltaic system and is supposed to email reports
to me periodically. Recently the reports stopped arriving.
If I run this tcpdump command as root I see lots of traffic, but all the
packets are either from my iMac or addressed to it.
    # tcpdump -i en1
If I run tcpdump with the arguments “host 10.0.1.3” which is
the IP address of the iPod Touch.
I'll see packets that are exchanged between it and the iMac,
but nothing between 10.0.1.3 and the outside world.
Here's what tcpdump looks like if I ping the iPod Touch from the
iMac and also browse the web on the iPod:
    # tcpdump -i en1 host 10.0.1.3
tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode
listening on en1, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 65535 bytes

    00:29:33.146741 IP 10.0.1.3 > 10.0.1.2: ICMP echo reply, id 33391, seq 1, length 64
    00:29:34.021939 IP 10.0.1.2 > 10.0.1.3: ICMP echo request, id 33391, seq 2, length 64
    00:29:34.068533 IP 10.0.1.3 > 10.0.1.2: ICMP echo reply, id 33391, seq 2, length 64
The ping traffic shows up as ICMP packets, but there's no sign of HTTP traffic.
My impression from what I’ve read on the web is that others have been able to do
packet sniffing of the “in-use” Airport network using tcpdump on Mac OS X and that
tcpdump automatically puts the interface in the required mode (promiscuous?).

I don’t know what I’m missing.
    Thanks for any advice.

What you want is known as "promiscuous mode". On Mac OS X 10.5.8 that seems to be the default. I'm not running a 10.6 Mac (yet), so I can't check what the tcpdump behavior is on that system. Try "man tcpdump" to see what it tells you about that.
    Thank you William.
Here’s my take on what the tcpdump manpage on Mac OS X 10.6.2 has to say related to promiscuous mode:
“Reading packets from a network interface may require that you have special privileges; see the pcap (3PCAP) man page for details.” The pcap(3) manpage says on Mac OS X “You must have read access to /dev/bpf*.” Since I’m running tcpdump as root I assume that is covered.
If you run tcpdump with the arguments “-i any” captures will not be done in promiscuous mode. I’m not using “-i any” so that does not apply.
“-p Don't put the interface into promiscuous mode.” This implies that the default
    mode is promiscuous.
The tpcdump and pcap manpages also discuss monitor mode for wireless, but I don’t think that is what I’m after since I only want packets from my “associated network.” I’m not trying to get packets from other networks in the area, that is ones with different SSIDs.
Can anyone who is running 10.6.2 confirm that tcpdump supports promiscuous mode on a wireless LAN. My orginal note outlined a way to test this, in my case using an iMac to run tcpdump and another device, an iPod touch, to generate some (HTTP) network traffic by browsing the web. The question is does tcpdump capture the packets going to and from the second device (iPod Touch) and the external web server. On my network the iPod Touch has address 10.0.1.3 so I could run tcpdump on the iMac and limit the capture to packets that are going to or from the iPod using this command:
    sudo tcpdump -i en1 host 10.0.1.3
While this tcpdump command was running I browsed the web on the iPod Touch. What I wanted and expected to see was a bunch of HTTP packets, but none appeared.
Thanks for any input or advice.

  • Wish to create network between PC and Mac

Hi, I wish to make a network between my iMac G5 and my PC running XP Pro. As soon as I plugged in the pc into my router I instantly got internet on my pc. So how do I make a network to exchange files, and share printers, and dvd drives. One of the things I want to do is use Popcorn 2 to burn a DVD but since I don't have a burner on my mac I want it to burn on my Windows PC (with the mac software).

    Welcome to the discussions!
"I want it to burn on my Windows PC (with the mac software)."
You can't use the Mac's software to burn a DVD on your PC. You can create a disk image, then bring that over to your PC on the network and burn it on the PC, but that will require the software to be on the PC for that. I think that is what you meant anyway, but I wanted to make sure.
Networking your Mac and PC is really not that hard to do. The Apple guides are not as clear as they could be, so start with Joel Shoemaker and Felix. They have some excellent step by step instructions and are very easy to follow.
For printer sharing, you might also need third party, open source drivers. Depending on the connection - on the PC or the Mac - and the printer brand they can be found in any number of places.
Give those pages a look and if you have anything specific that comes up, be sure to post back here and we can walk you through it.

  • Airport network connection comes and goes

I have a belkin N router and an iMac with an original airport card. For the past couple of months the airport will intermittently pretend the network doesn't exist. The router is 30 ft away so the connection is near 100% when it sees the network. When I try to access it manually by typing the network name in through "Other.." it refuses to recognize the network. I have completely cleaned the system software to no effect. Any thoughts very welcome. Thanks.
iMac g4 flat panel   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   800 mhz

I am having a similar problem to yours. I have done a clean install of 10.3 several times on my iMac 15" Flat Panel. When I boot up, the Time, Volume & Airport indicators on the right side of the menu bar take a long time (2min.) before they show up. When they do, the airport indicator is 'grey'. When I check Sys Pref - Networks, It says the airport is on but not connected to a network. Other menu bar items on the left boot up normally.
The airport was coming on intermittently so I decided to do a clean reinstall of 10.3, and I removed the bottom cover and re-seated the airport card. Since the clean re-install, all I get is a 'grey' airport indicator everytime.
I'm hoping someone responds to this string with some suggestions...
