Network Address scheme change - checklist?

I have the arduous task of changing the IP address space within a 24/7 production environment now. The new address space is not within same subnet as is being used currently.
100+ L2 switches, 2 x WAN routers, Core 6509 L3 switch, 800+ hosts, printers, etc.
Is there a good checklist to follow for successful planning and execution?
Setting up secondary IP addresses on sub-interfaces on switches in order to accomplish this with AS LITTLE IMPACT as possible is already in the works.
Any other task checklists, ideas are appreciated.

In addition to Anand's comments...
Generic re-addressing things to look at for potential impacts:
** if you're using it, IOS IP helper addressing for DHCP relaying, etc.
** static routes anywhere (e.g. firewalls, other edges)
** any kind of ACL, route maps, or other filtering in routers, switches, or firewalls
** NAT - e.g. NAT inbound to services
** DHCP server scopes
** DHCP params e.g. default gateway, netmask, etc.
** SLP DA's or other SLP-related infrastructure
** DNS or hosts files
** WINS server(s)
** any servers that have hard to change IP's like NetWare 5.x, 6.0
** anything that uses NDS, eDirectory, Active Directory that stores IP addresses in object attributes (e.g. servers, workstations)
** any AS/400's or mainframes, where touching the LAN interface could potentially kill all open emulator sessions
** any SQL or Intranet/web internally developed stuff where the developer was lazy and hardcoded the IP address instead of using DNS...
** any devices that do LPR/LPD to your printers
** any servers or PCs that participate in routing via RIP (e.g. Windows servers) or that would have static routes defined for some reason
** any SMTP servers that are hardcoded to use IP addresses for relaying and forwarding (to avoid DNS lookup overhead and need to rely on DNS for mail).
** any additional protocols like IPX, APPN, etc. that need to continue to work

  • Strange case of changing broadband network address...

Hello - I am new to the forums and would appreciate any advice concerning this enquiry.
    We recently got Bt infinity.
All seems well and we have good speed- - we have only been connected for a month.
Recently though a couple of times we have suddenly lost connection, or the connection seems to struggle to connect- this is with the home hub 5.
I  am not that technical regarding routers, but my current set up is with the home hub providing our personal network and then we have another router ( lan > Wan) that is used to provide wifi to guests in our adjacent holiday let. This router has dd-wrt installed and is set up to restrict bandwidth to guests. All works well.
However as mentioned recently the connection seems to drop - and also the guest network drops out as well.
I noticed that if I tried a speed test at this time that the IP address had changed to something unrecognisable.
Connecting and reconnecting on the hub usuually solves  it - but I  don't know why it happens?
Here  are the details when everything seems ''normal''

  • VZaccess Manager changes local network address

I would like to know why VZAccess Manager changes my local network IP address everytime it is installed or there is a program update. My LAN is on 10.0.0.- and VZAccess manager is installed on one computer on the network but every time I've had to re-install or there is a program update it sets the IP address for that computers LAN address to 192.168.-.- and I have to go back in and reset the network address to the proper settings for my network. This is a USB modem acquiring its own address from the Verizon network. Why is it mucking around in my LAN settings? It functions the same on the computer it is installed on no matter what my LAN is on so there is no reason for it to be altering these settings.

I'll give you an explanation of my network configuration and my opinion of the situation and VZ Access Manager and we can go from there.
I have an office in the lower leval of my home with my PC, my laptop and a NAS (an old PIII @1Ghz running FreeNAS to turn it into a Network Attached Storage). PC and NAS and usually the laptop are connected to a switch (their LAnto the switch w/CAT5. The switch is CAT5 to an Ensoniq CB3 for a wireless connection to a Hawkings wireless router w/ a 6.5 db external antenna that is located in the spare room upstairs where the computer my wife uses (on occasion) is also located. The Hawking is connected to the LAN on my wifes computer, connection sharing is set up on that computer too and the Verizon Novatel USB760 is attached to this computer through a USB port. VZ Access Manager is installed on her computer also. I can take control of her computer from downstairs using TeamViewer. The 3 computers and the NAS are on their own workgroup (renamed from 'WORKGROUP' and are also set up using 10.0.0.100, 10.0.0.101, 10.0.0.102 and the NAS is 10.0.0.150.
Everything works perfectly until VZ Access Manager is installed or upgraded at which time it changes the address of my wifes computer (that it's connected to USB to 192.168.1.1, 255.255.255.0, no default gateway or DNS server address which stops my network from working. The USB760/VZ Access Manager have acquired an IP address, mask, gateway and DNS from Verizon and they can be found in VZ Access Manager. It doesn't assign a valid address to the computer it's plugged into.
This is the point where I have to go in and reset that LAN to 10.0.0.100, 255.255.255.0, 10.0.0.10 and I use OpenDNS for all 4 units (and I change VZ Access Manager's DNS to OpenDNS' 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) and everything works fine until VZ Access manager comes along with another upgrade. My download speeds from any unit run a pretty consistant 680K to 1.3G with everything set as I've explained above.
Now, the USB760 and VZ Access Manager have acquired their address as they should have. There is no reason for the program to go in and alter the settings on that machines LAN because 1) they were already set 2) VZAM is not assigning a working address to that machine anyway, just a generic 192.168 address and wiping the gateway address and the DNS addresses that were in there and not even replacing them and not setting them to 'Acquire an address automatically'.
VZAM and the USB760 would function on this computer even if I pulled the LAN card out altogether so my opinion is that this is a software glitch or a programming error in VZAM that I have had to fix 5 times now (3 program updates and twice to humor tech support when they wouldn't believe me that the problem I was having originated on their end).
This is basically an annoyance and I am extremely glad that VZAM isn't smart enough to be able to access the whole network and change all the settings but I sure would like to see it fixed before someone changes the code in a future update and it allows VZAM to run amok all the way through my LAN network.
Heheheh, it might not stop at the end of my network.....and the whole world will be reset to 192.168.1.1....even the MACs and the Smartphones.
    Have Fun

  • Aironet 350 WAP + IP Scheme Change

    Hello,
I have an Aironet 350 Wireless Access Point running VxWorks 11.07.  We had it working fine on our 172.23.0.X IP address schema where the Ethernet and AP Radio shared the same IP address.
We have recently moved to a 10.121.40.X IP address schema and so I made very simple changes to the network configuration of the WAP (IP address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS).  However, now I can't get any devices to connect to the WAP even though I know they did before with the old IP address schema.  I've even tried the WAP on DHCP and the result is the same.
What can I do to get this WAP working again?  Is it something to do with the 10.121.40.X range?
    Thanks.

The clients are trying to connect but in Windows don't get to the 'Acquiring network address' stage.
After a failed connection attempt the VxWorks 'Associations' page lists the client device but the 'State' is 'UnAuth'.
The WAP Event Log shows a lot of the following type of entries but nothing else:

  • VPNs and address schemes

Years ago I setup my addressing scheme using 192.168.1.x. Now I
sometimes have users connecting to our network over a VPN. And
frequently their local network (home wifi, hotel wifi, etc) are also
using 192.168.1.x. This ends up causing connection problems. I have
had a couple users change their home networks to something else and
their problems went away. Short of me re-doing all my network
addresses, is there something I am missing that would solve this
problem? Some way to handle VPNs so the PCs don't confuse their local
    IPs with my IPs?
    Thanks,
    Ken

I hate this problem, for the same reasons you've mentioned. Personally,
if I had a company network, I'd put it randomly somewhere in the 10.x.x.x
range just to avoid this since most home networks take the 192.168.0.x or
192.168.1.x space. Some hotels may use 172.16.x.x or 10.x.x.x, but with a
random range of your own hopefully it'll work out.
Alternatively, maybe push out explicit routes to what they need so while
they can keep their own network operational any attempts to reach
192.168.1.37 (a specific server they need to access) will have an explicit
route on their machine pushed out by the VPN software, telling the box to
use the VPN connection. Doing that for all of your boxes may be....
onerous. Still, it's the only workaround that comes to mind as being
slightly reasonable and not involving changing your network around.
A slightly less-fun idea: VPN network gets its own range, and then you put
boxes there that people can remote-control which can access the rest of
the network. Terribly inefficient if the person wants to do something
that is not great via a GUI, or if their connection is slow, but you could
    make it work. Bleh.
    Good luck.

  • WRT54G - limited or no connectivity - stalls at "aquiring network address"

Ok, so I decided to move my modem and router to a different location in the house and unplugged and re-set everything.  I went through the basic setup and finally got to the point where I can get internet when the pc is wired to the router.  Wireless, the pc is picking up the network fine but when it gets to "aquiring network address" it just stalls and eventually I get the message that I have limited or no connectivity.  When I righ click on the network connection icon and click "repair" connection it cannot verify network address.  My xbox 360 is also picking up the network but fine but will not connect.  Everything was working fine beforehand but I cannot for the life of me figure out what setting needs adjustment.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

FWIW, this is similar to a problem I just posted.  I got around the problem by selecting properties on the connection, and changing the settings under 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties' to use a specific IP address.
    These settings worked for me:
    IP 192.168.1.101
    Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway 192.168.1.1
    Preferred DNS server 192.168.1.1
    Alternate DNS server 192.168.1.2
I haven't yet found a solution to allow me to go back to obtaining an IP address automatically.  Did you?

  • ACS Database Replication over VPN with overlapping Network Addresses

We currently have two co-locations each situated in different provinces. We have two ACS servers which we want to deploy at each co-location. All our network equipments are behind PIX/ASA devices. Getting them to replicate over the VPN should be easy but in our case we have overlapping Network Addresses at both ends of the tunnels.
As per Cisco data does not transit a NAT device when the two Cisco Secure ACS servers communicate and a successful database replication can occur only if the secondary ACS server perceives no change in the IP header or content of the data it receives. So that means we will not be able to Implement NAT to achiever this.
Has any one of you faced this problem of replicating ACS Database over the VPN with overlapping Network Addresses and was anyone able to successfully solve this issue using a work around ?
All provided info and comments are greatly appreciated.

I can help with the 3005 setup if you decide to go that route.
You will need to add 2 network list entries under Configuration>Policy Management>Traffic Management>Network Lists.
You will need to configure a local and remote address. The local will be one of the public ip's for the site.(Provided by your ISP)The remote will be the device you are connecting to on the other end.
You will also need to add a Nat Lan to Lan rule under Configuration>Policy Management>Traffic Management>Nat>Lan to Lan.
Use a static Nat type. The rest will look similar to my example.
Source(Local address)Translated(Public Ip Address used in the network local list)Remote(Ip address of the device on the other end)
Now just create an Ipsec lan to lan tunnel. You will need to agree with the ISP on des type and auth type. Use you local and remote networks you created earlier.

  • IP address constantly changes requiring adding new port to enable wireless printing

I have a HP Photosmart C7280 printer setup with wireless option.  My home network uses a wireless Linksys router.  My problem is that the IP address constantly changes, so when trying to print from the desktop in the other room, I have to go through many steps: go to the printer, view the network settings, go back to the desktop in the other room, and add a new port in the printer properties in order to enable printing.  There is now quite a collection of different ports that appear in the list as this seems to happen everytime I need to print from that computer.  I don't seem to have the same  issue with the main desktop which is located near the printer even though it was setup with the same wireless option.
I am not an expert on networking, so I don't understand why the IP address constantly changes.  My question is how to avoid this annoyance? Do I need to choose a different setup option?  The computers on the home network do not all use the same operating system so I was trying to avoid the potential headache of trying to share the printer on the network.

You can find the steps how to assign a  manual ip address in the link:

  • Ip address not changing

    Hi All
I am new to iMac's for about a year now.  I had a question about ip addresses not changing.  I have various devices in the house and when I change wireless networks they automatically update their ip address.  Not so so for the iMac running Yosemite.  It seems to have stopped working some months ago and I have been getting around this by changing the ip address manually in Network Preferences.  This is becoming pain as you can imagine especially when other non familiar people use the computer.
The reason for the two wireless networks in the house is because I have one network which is without VPN and the other VPN connected for streaming services.  I can't run all my regional services from the VPN connected network.
Thanks in advance for any help someone can give.
    Regards
    Vivian

Lasts monday I downloaded a version (10.1.2 release, not preview/beta 3) which has the same filename and file size of the 10.1.2 GA release which is available right now.
I don't think the problem is in the PM, because i can run bpelc/obant to build my processes. however when i build them with the Eclipse plugin, it won't change the location of the wsdl (keep saying $CHANGE_WHEN_DEPLOY$).

  • How to address the IP address automatically changing problem?

My Oracle database 10g(10.2.0) is on the WinXP platform and the system IP address often changes automatically. This leads to some troubles with my Oracle database. How to deal with this problem? How to stop the IP changing problem?

  • Router not assigning network address

I have the Verizon FIOS Actiontec router.  The wired connection is great but the wireless connection is nothing but trouble. My wireless computers see the wireless network and say they "connect" to it, but then they have a problem getting a "network address" from the router - about half the time I get no network address and so can't access my network or the internet.  The actual message is "Getting network address" - this stays on for a minute or two and then I get the message that I have no or limited connectivity and I can't connect - even though the network signal I get is "very strong".  I try rebooting my wireless computers, re-booting my router and sometimes it connects and sometimes it doesn't - there is no pattern.  If I leave my computer alone it will re-try the connection every once and a while and may eventually connect - usually if I wait long enough, but this may be hours or a day latter before it will eventually connect.  It is not a password issue because about half the time I have no problem at all, the other half of the time it may be hours or a day before I can connect.
Verizon sent me a new router and I have the very same problem.  I never had this problem when I used my own wireless router with DSL (before FIOS).  The same problem is true for both a desktop with a wireless connection and a netbook I have (all systems are running xp).  I even re-set up my old wireless router in serial with my Verizon router and both computers picked up and connected to the old router right away - I even got internet using this serial set up - but I have other problems with this set up so it really is not a solution - but it was useful in letting me know it is not something with my wireless computers.  I even uninstalled and reinstalled the wireless adapter to my desktop and that did not help.
Has anyone else had this problem?  Why is this happening?  What can I do to fix this?  Please help.

How to improve wireless networking on Verizon MI424WR
follow this guide, but you're best bet is to change the wireless channel.  that is a relatively painless procedure.  There are only three channels in N.America that are useable.  Those are wireless channel 1,  wireless channel 6 and wireless channel 11.
you probably have some heavy interference on whichever wireless channel you are currently on.   One of the three listed should provide good results for you, but you'll want to cycle through each of them to find which channel is the best.
    Log into your router
    http://192.168.1.1
    Default user name is 'admin'
Default Password is 'password1'  other variants are 'password', or 'admin'
Once you're logged into the router, stay in the first column and look for change wireless settings.
When you click on that your wireless settings will come up, and you'll see the channels as your number 3 option.  simply use the drop down list to choose channel 1, place a check mark where it says something to the effect of "keep these changes even after a reboot"  and then hit apply.
wait for it to lock in, try to reconnect to your wireless and try it out for however long it takes to drop off again.  if it does not drop off then you are good, if it does, then change it from 1 to 6, and then if that does not work change it to 11.
also take a quick look at the actiontec link at the top.  It's very basic but it gives some food for though with regard to things that potentially can interfere with that wireless transmission.

  • Network Address of Subscriber Objects

When I look at a Distribution in Imanager's Tiered Distribution View,
Some of my Subscribers show up with the IP address.
I have gone into the Object in NDS and checked under the Other tab and
looked at the Network address. On some Subscribers I have a TYPE_13 that
has the DNS and some that have the IP in the TYPE_13. On other
Subscribers I have both a TYPE_13 field and an IP field.
    My question is
    1. Is there any issue with changing the TYPE_13 field that has the IP
address to the DNS name as it should be.
    2. Is there any issue with leaving the extra field IP in place.
    3. does adding the field IP to my subscribers get me anything ?

    Ron,
I have made the change to the entry on the Subscriber objects under the
other tab/network Address/type_13 and changed the entry from the IP
    address to the DNS name.
This has resolved the issue of the IP address of the subscriber showing
in iManager rather than the Subscribers name and also looks like it may
of resolved a certificate issue we were having with these subscribers as
    well.
Thanks for your help as always
