Network and Upgrade PowerMac 6500

I own a PowerMac 6500 that could be considered all but new. It was never used very much by the original owner. It came originally with OS 8.X, but it has been upgraded to OS 9.1. I believe this is as far as this computer can be upgraded.
I'm not that Mac knowledgeable, my Leopard iMac is the first Mac I've ever owned.
I would like to add this computer to my home network, but the computer is at the other end of the house. I occasionally use the computer, and for file transfer I have to use the old "sneaker net" method using Zip 100 disks. That method is becoming a PITA since the ZIP units are/have disappeared.
And I would like to keep the cost as low as possible. This is a project of convenience, not of necessity.
My router is a Netgear RangeMax wireless router, model WNR834Bv2.
There are no ethernet ports on the rear of the computer.
I would prefer to run an ethernet cable, but when I think of the work it would take, I'm not particularly fond of that idea. So, I'd be willing to do a wireless connection if the cost doesn't get out of hand.
What would I need to buy to connect to the network, both wired and wireless?
Anyone have suggestions as to where to find the needed hardware?
The computer has 94mb of RAM, which I would like to increase. I do have a lot of old RAM chips from old PC's laying about. Any chance any of these extra RAM chips I have would work? Could I actually swap some of the chips and turn the computer on without risking any damage?
Any help and advice would appreciated.
Thanks.
Ken

Hello Ken,
The router I have for the network is also wireless so I shouldn't need a bridge. I use the wireless portion for updating my cell phone. All I think I need is a card in the computer.
A wireless Ethernet bridge does not replace the wireless router. The router acts as a base station. The wireless Ethernet bridge in this case (connected by cable to the Ethernet network card in the computer) operates as a wireless adapter, and connects wirelessly to the base station.
Instead of using a wireless Ethernet bridge combined with an Ethernet network card, it would in principle be possible to use one single (PCI) wireless card in the computer. However, the problem can be finding drivers for the operating system in question. A wireless Ethernet bridge device does not have this problem.
I was just given a Netgear wireless bridge, and this has me wondering, would it also serve as a receiver as well as a transmitter?
Which model is it?
A wireless Ethernet bridge can both send and receive, just as a wireless network card.
I also have an old D-Link Wireless USB adapter, but the computer does not have a USB port either.
Even if you could install a USB (PCI) card, you would probably face the same problem as above with the drivers for the wireless USB adapter.

  • PowerMac 6500 and Rage 128

Is there any reason a pci Rage 128 won't play nice with a Powermac 6500?  I've tried two Rage 128s (both from B&W G3s) on it so far and nothing works.  In fact, in System Profiler it just shows up as a generic "display card".
I have tested both cards in a G3 and they display fine.  I'm using the drivers included with Mac 9.1.

Not sure. I have a PowerMac 7600/132 running OS 8.6 and I installed a retail ATI Rage 128 Orion card with 16MB VRAM and it works like a charm. The card was bought for a Beige G3 and became surplus when I upgraded the G3 to an original ATI Radeon 32MB VRAM card (not the later and less effective Radeon 7000).
Do you see the little ATI control center icon in the menu bar?
I needed older drivers that were not on the ATI (now part of AMD) website and e-mailed them. They sent s zip file with all the old drivers. However, the retail cards often used a different set of drivers than those for an Apple-installed card.

Who can shed some light on my ongoing connection problem.
After upgrading my iPad Air with IOS 7.06, I could no longer connect to the internet.
I have 2 MacBooks Air, 1 ipad mini and one iPhone 4S running on the same network, and they are all connected to the net and function well.
So I cleaned up the ipad completely, installed the latest firmware and reinstalled my apps : no connection.
I tried all things of resets and forgets. No result.
I have been fondling with my Airport Extreme 5 , but that did not help much.
This morning I went to a neighbor , hooked my ipad air on his network, typed the password and the thing all worked fine.
I have tried to connect the ipad air as an ethernet client, but that did not work. „Not enough power“ was the statement
    Ideas anyone ?

Yes I tried this manyfold. But did not work.  Reading on, I took Tesserac's advice. Shut down router and computer.
Start router after 15 minutes and wait another 10 minutes before starting the computer.
Et voila.... everything is back in working order,

  • My iPod touch won't connect to wifi. Password is correct. Already reset network settings and restored ipod to original settings. Already updated iTunes and upgraded iPod to iOS 6.

A message keeps popping up when I try to join my network that says, "unable to join the network."
I have already reset network settings and restored ipod to original settings.
I already updated iTunes and upgraded iPod to iOS 6.
The password is correct. I even made sure by checking my wifi account.
I have completely restarted my internet connection multiple times.
I have also restarted my ipod multiple times
My wifi was working on my iPod yesterday before I reset all settings.
I updated it yesterday to iOS 5. Still didn't work.
It wasn't updated to the new iOS 6 until today so I don't think it has anything to do with the upgrade.
My camera started to be glitchy, so I reset my Ipod like I was advised in another discussion.
My internet wasn't connected anymore. My password wasn't working either, but the wifi connection was still showing.
    Safari still wasn't working, though.
I did the sensible thing and I reset my network connection.
Now, the password isn't working and there's no wifi signal.
The camera is working well now, but the wifi is messed up. I didn't expect any of this to happen. The internet is all I use the iPod for. Now, the iPod is useless to me. Please help?

are other things still connecting to the wifi without a problem?
Have you tried resetting network settings, then unplugging modem and router from power for 40 seconds then plugging back in letting the lights stabilize and Then recconecting with the ipod>?

I have no idea why this has happend ive been using the phone for 2years bought it on pay as you go and now all of a sudden its stating the above error i have never come across this problem before and currently im using 3GS and Iphone 4S

    Sounds like it's been blacklisted.
Even if it hasn't, downgrading voids any warranty and forfeits all rights to support. You hacked your phone. You can't get help here.

  • I upgraded my iPAD 1 and now it will not connect to my wi-fi.  It does not ask for password.  It does recognize wi-fi name.  I have rebooted, unplugged router, 'forget network', and reset network.  Still will not connect.

I have no idea what to try next.  Please help!

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

    Hi ChrisBell,
my Pixi shows me the missed calls in a list of its own? I don't have many, so maybe I'm missing something. But I agree with your half-ranting to some degree. As a long-time Palm-user (my last phone was a Treo 680, terrible form factor, good UI), I am really disappointed with the standard software on this phone. Memos and Tasks, which AFAIK were there and useful even on the first Newton's, have regressed beyond the point of usefulness now (solution: Toodledo and Done!, at least for now).
But ChrisBell: if you feel up for it, you could start tinkering. Many people love these phones so much they have started developing patches to solve the obvious problems skimmed over by developers. Try looking up "webosquickinstall" and "preware", and you will find over 300 patches and a lot of free software to help you out. I am not a computer wizard myself, but I am not scared of them either, and I have been able to make good use of all these extras made available by the community.
just a thought, might help you out on a few of your half-rants

I receive a 4s after been use for 2 years in the verizon network and the customer upgrade to a 5. I will like to use the phone overseas but I do not use Verizon, how I can get this phone legally unlocked without having to add service because I'm with Sprint under a contract?
I can get the prior  owner of the phone info if you nedd to contac her to verify, just let me know thank you.
If the phone was used in the Verizon network for 2 years, is that not enough time to get the phone unlocked?

I have sprint phone and service without simcard, Sprint and Verizon use CDMA. But if I can get the Verizon iPhone 4S unlocked, I can use it let's said in the caribean, canada, europe etc.,  with a local simcard from the service provider and country that I visit . No to be use here in USA with Sprint or Verizon, only to be use with GSM-Simcard when I travel out of USA.

  • No longer able to connect and use internet on any wireless network after upgrading to iOS 6

Everything worked great for the first few hours.  But now whenever I connect to ANY wireless network on my iPad, it connects fine.. When I do anything that involves internet, the wifi logo goes away, and a screen pops up (as if you're using a hotel wireless network) and says "apple - page not found" at the top, and is an apple.com page.  Even though there is no wireless symbol in the upper left corner, I can go to all of the links and everything, but outside of this one window the internet no longer works.
I have NEVER seen anything like this before.
I didn't do anything abnormal that would have caused this.
    Thank you.

    OK great info!
I found 2 possible ethernet to USB adapters:
By "Plugable":  USB 2.0 to ethernet LAN wired network adapter - seems this will work, but I'll contact Plugable.
    2. Apple USB Ethernet Adapter
Easily connect your MacBook Air computer to an Ethernet network with the Apple USB Ethernet Adapter. Small and light, it connects to the USB 2.0 port of your MacBook Air and provides an RJ-45 connector that supports 10/100BASE-T performance.  BUT NOT SURE IF THIS WILL WORK ON ANYTHING BUT a MacBook Air…
    One person commented:
This little gem used to be the device of choice for adding a second Ethernet interface to a Mac Mini Server and I'd been using one that way for about a year. After doing a software update to 10.6.6 it stopped working. Forewarned is forearmed – it appears that Apple is finally enforcing the MacBook Air system requirement.
    Thanks for any additional comments.

You are making some progress with setup of wireless network. Apparently there is reliability problem with the wireless connection. Perhaps you want to refer to following Apple support documents and start tweaking parameters in the router to improve the reliability. I used to have third-party routers such as Belkin and Netgear but switched to Apple Airport routers (Time Capsule then Airport Extreme for now) because of incompatibility issues whenever Apple upgrade Mac OS X. But since Apple develops Airplay protocol as alternative to Bluetooth for wireless audio/video streaming (with much better bandwidth) and must be deployed in any wireless network, there is no reason third-party routers not working for Airplay protocol.

  • Existing Windows network and a new MacPro?

I am currently running a home network as follows:
2 ea. Dell PCs running XP Pro, ethernet wire connected to a LinkSys cable modem/router, connected to Comcast for internet access. I also have an HP color laserjet 3500 printer hardwire connected to the LinkSys as part of the network. I have external hard drives on each PC connected to USB ports on the PCs but made available for accessing to either PC for storage and/or retrieval. I run MS Office 2003 on each PC and use Outlook for my email on each PC.
I am contemplating replacing the older PC with a new MacPro and have the following questions:
    1. Will I simply remove the old PC from the network and connect (ethernet cable) the new MacPro to the LinkSys cable modem/router? Will I have internet access at this point oon my new MacPro or will I have to do something else (configure the MacPro or whatever) to gain this internet access?
    2. Will the new MacPro see the networked HP printer and will I be able to print to that printer thru the network from my MacPro? Any special software needed on my MacPro to print to that printer?
    3. I assume that it is possible to physically connect my current external hard drives to the new MacPro thru a USB connection, but will the MacPro see the files on these ext drives and can I access them?
    4. I plan on installing MS Office on the MacPro. If I create a file (Word, Xcel or PowerPoint document) and email it to a non-believer (PC-user) will they be able to open and use the file, assuming they are running MS Office 2003 on their PC?
    5. I understand that I can install up to four hard drives on the MacPro, all internal. Is there any advantage to using two internal hard drives to provide back up capability as opposed to using one internal hard drive and then buying a separate external MacPro compatible hard drive for my backup? That is - should I go with two internal hard drives or one internal and one external - thinking that if something bad powerwise should happen to the MacPro maybe the ext hard drive would have been spared. (I do have surge protectors on all of my equipment.) I assume that I would NOT be able to access files from the Mac ext hard drive from my other PC. Is that a good assumption?
    6. I understand that I can download BootCamp and run Windows programs on my MacPro. Can I run BootCamp and MacOS concurrently? Can I run BootCamp and MS Office for Windows on my MacPro, prepare a PowerPoint presentation, store it on my MacPro hard drive, then run Mac OS X, PowerPoint (MS Office for the Mac) and open the recently created PowerPoint file that I had created under BootCamp, MS Office for Windows? Can I go back and forth between the two operating systems creating files, opening and storing them? Or is this all a moot point in that any MS Office for Mac file creeated on the MacPro will be fully compatible with any PC system should I email them the file and I don't even have to worry about BootCamp?
    7. I understand that Apple will release their new operating system, Leopard, next spring 2007. Should I wait to buy a MacPro until that new OS is on the market? If I did buy the MacPro now, is it a big deal to upgrade the MacPro to new OS?
Thanx in advance for any advice you can give me.
    Harry

    Yes.

"is it a big deal to upgrade the MacPro to new OS?"
