Network apple time capsule with other modem

I am way over my head here.  I am trying to figure out how to "bridge" my new apple time capsule with my ATT Uverse Modem.  I have the time capsule primarily for backup, but it serves a wireless function as well does the ATT Uverse Modem.   Someone did this for me in the past, but my Time Capsule died, and I disconnected it.  I can not figure out how to wire it all back together.  Is there a diagram out there?

Plug the TC into a computer.. complete isolation from the network.
Open the airport utility.
Put the TC in bridge mode.
Go to the wireless page and setup wireless .. create a wireless network. I recommend you do roaming network and so space the TC and the uverse modem by a few feet.
But it is up to you.. you can use a completely different network name and security if you want.

Although the article is for multiple apple routers it will be fine with 2 different routers.
Only I would set fixed wireless channels.

For my first time time capsule 2TB set up,would like to know about configuration time capsule with ADSL modem for use WiFi internet!

You will want to turn off the WiFi on your modem (if there is WiFi on your modem). Connect the TC and the modem together with an Ethernet cable. Then, turn on your TC and set it up to be in bridged mode, connection type 'Ethernet'.

  • Configuring Apple Time Capsule with Netgera DG834N modem

I'm configuring a wirless system with:
a 3 year old Netgear DG834N modem / router set to modem only mode
a 6 month old Apple Time Capsule
    a new Netgear WNDR4500 router
Previously I'd linked the ATC in bridged mode to the DG834N with the latter in modem + router mode and all was fine with no conflicts between the ATC and DG834N.
    Questions:
what is the best mode for the ATC now that it links to the modem only mode DG834N?
do I need to run each on separate non-conflicting channels for both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands?

OK.. sorry I should have twigged with the TNZ.. pppoa is a b pain in the nether regions.. that should get through all the apple filters for language.. but privately I would fill it out with the aussie slang version. In Australia all our ISP use pppoe and some allow pppoa as well. You cannot bridge to pppoa.. the nature of the beast is that it has to happen on the modem.. ie the ATM interface.
There are tricks to get around it.
    1. Obviously just use the modem router as your main router.. that solves the problem but as a router,, it is lousy. Netgear build all their modems with minimal interface. And it is slow.
    2. Since you cannot do full bridge you can use half bridge.. this used to be common but not so much now. It has some issues with dynamic IP and lots of linux based routers spit the dummy. (almost everything is now linux due to free source). Look up the 834N if it is possible to do half bridge and give it a try .. Maybe with DGTeam firmware.. there are alternative firmware to some netgear models since the netgear one is so devoid of functionality. Other modems do support it.. it is not gone but well down the list now. (FYI: the problems with half bridge is the IP rotates but the client doesn't have the IP updated until the local lease time expires... so lease is set to ridiculously short times to compensate. )
    3. DMZ.. this is double NAT but without a lot of the bad effects.. A router in dmz of another router simply passes all packets both ways as if it is a bridge. The problem is speed.. packets only go as fast as the router can handle them.. Adsl aint that fast so it isn't an issue that way.
More importantly, you are still filling the NAT table of the modem's router, so it can fall over with too many connections.
    4. There are two tricks but Netgear would have to be replaced. Also the router has to support pptp to pppoa relay. Not sure if the WNDR4500 will but it is used by dd-wrt if that is possible. Pain to setup but very solid.. Thomson speedtouch and later models all support this. You make the connection to the modem via a pptp tunnel..which is able to pass the authentication.
The Draytek also support a trick using pppoe to pppoa relay.. look at models like 120.. This is different to the above but using a similar trick. (There are a few other brands to offer it but you can see draytek have specialised in it.. it is common issue in uk which is a big market for them.)
    http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor120.html
Note specific reference to apple routers.
    5. One to One NAT.. this is true NAT.. what is normally referred to as NAT is NAPT. One public address to many private addresses. True NAT is like DMZ.. it does pass through the router.. but all packets are simply passed from one public to one private IP.
This mode is available on speedstream models like 4200.. 6520... bit ancient now.. but they worked really well. Most people looked at the interface and had no idea what NAPT and NAT stood for. And Siemens wasn't bright enough to explain it.
Thomson has it.. but hard to setup. Draytek have most modes although not tried in their modems.
    That probably covers the field.
Most people resign themselves to 1.
I wouldn't bother with netgear forum.. but look at forums for your Telecom NZ and look at solutions people are using to run a router behind the pppoa authentication problem.

  • How to setup apple time capsule with FIOSinternet and VZ router?)

    Hello,
I have Apple time capsule and the VZ Router MI424WR. I current set up:
    1. VZ router - wireless off, the rest is standard
    2. Time capsule: Wireless on in Bridge mode
Result: Internet works but the wireless network is very in-stable. Airtunes is nearly not usable.
I searched in the Internet and there was several comments that is is not a good combination. Therefore it is recommended to convert the VZ router in a modem mode and use only the Time capsule as the router. I tried this several times I do not get it to work. I followed this procedure (http://data.agaric.com/node/2160) but then I need the PPPoE Account number and password. But there do I get this? The Verizon support was not really helpful.
Please, is there a good and complete description to solve that issue?
    Thanks in advance
    Moebius

Go back to your first setup ...
Verizon router with wireless turned off
Apple Time Casule with wireless turned on
    Method 1:
With the Time Capsule in "Bridge Mode", if I remember correctly, you should connect the WAN port to one of the open ports on the Verizon router (I believe bridge mode also turns off the DHCP server on the Time Capsule, if not, find that and turn if off as well).   Change the addressing mode for the Time Capsule to "static" and assign it an address on the LAN which is not in use (choose something you know is out of the way but on the LAN -- I suggest 192.168.1.180 to start -- you can change it once you get everything working).
If it doesn't work this way for you, move the cable from the WAN port on the Time Capsule to Port 1 and try again.
    Method 2:
This results in a router behind a router setup, but unless you have devices connected directly to the Verizon router, it shouldn't be a problem.
With the Time Capsule disconnected from the Verizon router, turn on "Connection Sharing" (not bridge mode) and make sure DHCP is enabled on the Time Capsule.  You need to change the address range being used by the Time Capsule (which I think defaults to 192.168.1.x to another network -- I suggest, 192.168.2.x with a netmask of 255.255.255.0 and give the router an address of 192.168.2.1 on the LAN side.  Now, connection the WAN port to one of the Verizon router LAN ports.  If you had anything connected to the Verizon LAN ports, move those over to the LAN ports on the Time Capsule and reboot them.
    Method 3:
This is the least desirable of the scenarios because it relies on Verizon's crappy radio in their router (the Time Capsule has a much better radio and support 802.11n as well as b and g) whereas Verizon's only support b/g.    Go back to the configuration for Method 1, but also turn OFF wireless on the Time Capsule and turn on wireless on the Verizon router.   Try both bridge scenarios described -- using the WAN port first and if that didn't work, then moving the connection to port 1.
There is no scenario where you can place the Verizon router behind the Time Capsule -- since I believe Verizon is using all MoCA connections for the WAN side of their connection (you'd have to get Verizon to convert you to ethernet WAN and then they would not support you most likely for any STB issues with your FiOS if the Time Capsule was between the ONT and their router ... so don't even bother wasting time there ... more headaches than it would be worth.
If you're still not sure exactly what each configuration screen on the time capsule should say, post some screen snaps (or the configuration settings/choices which you are unsure about and someone will likely know the answer here).

  • Networking: extend wireless network Apple Time Capsule to cisco DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem

How should I connect a Time Capsule (4th gen) to a Cisco DOCSIS 3.0 that came with xfinity service to create a wireless extension to network... any  special settings???
Should I use the Cisco or TC for the DHCP controller?

You cannot wireless extend a network using TC.. Apple designed it to only work with other Apple products.. this is not that unusual.. but it is important .. you cannot do what you want.
One network .. one router. Keep the cisco as the main router and plug in the TC by ethernet and bridge it.. that is router bridge not wireless bridge .. you will find the control in the NAT and DHCP section of Lion
Or download the vastly superior older version of the utility here.

  • Time Capsule With Broadband Modem?

    Hi,
The current Time Capsule seems to be designed for cable users. I'm on BT Broadband and would very much like a Time Capsule product that had an internal Broadband Modem (ADSL), so that I just have 1 box with everything (modem, router, hard drive) in it. Any chance of Apple ever making this?

I think there is zero chance Apple would design and sell such a product. If they did, they would have to stock and support two different products instead of one. Or maybe even three different products, since some users of cable internet have previously asked a similar question to yours in this discussion forum.
Providing product support for a device that contained a DSL modem would be a nightmare for Apple. There are many different varieties and flavors of DSL service. There isn't a large degree of compatibility between DSL service providers. And if something didn't work, you could imagine the battles that would ensue between the ISP claiming it was Apple's modem that was at fault, vs Apple's support people saying it was the ISP's system that was at fault - issues potentially far more complex than those that exist now getting some DSL modems to communicate with a base station. If you look at the current marketplace, there are few combo DSL modems/routers that are sold directly to end users by other companies like D-Link, Netgear, and Linksys. These combo devices are most often supplied directly by the ISPs to their customers - and product support is the reason for that.

  • Set up Time capsule with USB modem

    HI
I'm relatively new to my mac & I just purchased a time capsule. I use a Verizon USB modem for internet and this has caused me some problems trying to set up the TC.
Is there anything any one can tell me to help? I could use some step by step help. The light is green, says I was successful but I can't print & have not even tried anything else. I just know my internet connection is wrong.....
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I was hoping I could set it up for remote printing & backup w/o using internet connection. No?
Although the Time Capsule (TC) could be configured a number of ways, having a USB modem will limit you somewhat. I am assuming that your modem is not wireless and that you connect your MacBook Pro directly for Internet access using an USB cable ... correct?
Since the modem doesn't have an Ethernet port, the only option you will have for the TC is to operate it as a wireless network ... basically its default configuration. You then have two choices on how to connect your MBP to the TC: by Ethernet or wirelessly.

  • Airport time capsule with another Modem/router

I'm considering buying an Airport time capsule. However I have already a modem/ router in place for fiberoptics (Dutch: KPN ExperiaBox), this is also for phone and TV, so changing anything in this setup is no option.
My question is if the TC will work when it is connected via an ethernet cable that is coming from the ExperiaBox.
(Fyi I'm looking for a standard functionality, not for an extensive customizing)
    Thanks in advance
    Regards,
    Twan

You simply bridge the TC and it will work just fine.

  • Time Capsule with other hardware

    I'm in a dilemma here.
I recent bought a TC (in October) and found that I couldn't get my Wii/PS3/DS to connect to it. It also doesn't have enough ports. Before I bought the TC I used a Linksys WRT320N (4-port) with an 8-port switch. Basically I wanted to incorporate the TC to back up my MacPro, but I found the only way for anything wireless to connect to it, could only do so using the "guest" wireless.
Can anyone recommend how I should get something setup so I can use the TC, WRT320N (WEP for the Wii/PS3/DS), and 8-port switch? If the TC had WEP I think that would just simplify the matter, but no such luck (sigh).
I know it's a ridiculous amount of connections, but it's what I need. If anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it. I've been making myself mental trying different kinds of setups.

+I have to say that I didn't find any documentation that showed that the TC could be configured that way+
I can't speak for Apple, but assume that they are trying to make setup as easy as possible. By default, if you have a dual band TC, the "main" network is 802.11n only 5 GHz. This allows the fastest devices to connect to this band. The "guest" network is 802.11 n,b,g compatible at 2.4 GHz to allow most other devices to connect. This covers the bases for probably 90% + of users. You need more "options", so use the "option" key whenever you are looking for settings.
If you go to the same wireless settings page I indicated earlier, you should see a "Wireless Options" button. If you click this, you can assign a different name to the "guest" network to make it easier to figure out which network you are actually connected to. If you have separate names for the "main" and "guest" networks, you will have to click the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen and look for the specific network you want. Your computer is connecting to the "guest" network now probably because it sees a better signal there than the main network.
5 GHz signals are faster, but not as strong as 2.4 GHz signals. So the 5 GHz signals do not penetrate walls or obstructions as well as 2.4 GHz signals. Unless you are close to the TC, or almost have "line-of-sight" from your computer to the router, your computer may connect to the guest band because that is the stronger signal. Lower frequencies travel better. The ads won't tell you this, of course, because everyone seems to be looking for "speed". But, to get speed, you have to give up something....power. That's why your Mac connected to the lower speed Linksys reliably.

  • Wrt320n with Apple Time Capsule in Wireless sharing mode

    Hi!
I try to connect my LinkSys wrt320n with Apple Time Capsule with mode "sahring existing wireless network" and so Time capsule doesn't work. It gets IP, but writes "isn't internet connection, WiFi network don't find" and also in the admipage of my wrt320 I can't see Time Capsule as client.
Is it possible to make this mode with these two?
Thanks for your advice and solutions.

For setting up the Time Capsule to work as a wireless station, the WAN port should be connected to a modem. In your case, the WAN port should be connected to the to the ethernet port of the router since the modem is already connected to the Linksys. By the way, you don't need to setup a wireless station anymore since you already have a router, unless it serves as another purpose. In addition to that, if you want to setup the TC to do backup then you cannot use it as a wireless station anymore. It can only serve one purpose at a time, depending on the type of settings being set.

  • Time Capsule with Dt. Telekom Entertain and Speedport Router

    Hi
I have read quite a number of posts in various internet sources that using Apple Time Capsule with VDSL requires a specific setup, and possibly also additional hardware able to translate the VDSL specific channels in order to be able to use Dt Telekom Entertain (VOD and TV streaming).
My current setup is as follows (I have not tried any possible connections with the Time Capsule and the macbook pro as of yet, as I want to avoid frustration and spending lengthy time in sorting out options by trial and error):
    Internet Provider: Dt. Telekom
Package: Entertain Premium IP with VDSL 50 and VOIP telephony
    Router: Speedport W722V
    Media Receiver: Entertain MR303
Currently the router is directly connecting (cable) to the landline (fibre) via a splitter
The MR303 is cable-connected (LAN/Ethernet), and I plan to maintain this cable connection, so no need for wifi'ing this connection
A variety of device is wirelessly connected to the router, such as game console, two iphones, two ipads, a TV, two windows laptops (which are soon to be thrown out, as we are swithcing from PC to macbook)
Thus far all good, my question(s):
Can anyone advise on the best possible options to setup my new TimeCapsule (latest model) as router, thus degrading the speedport router to a mere modem, and with best possible I am particularly interested in:
    * Entertain (VOD and streaming) to work as smoothly as today (ie. no streaming lapses, outages etc)
    * VOIP to still run as smoothly as today
    * leveraging the benefit of WLAN speed and capability of the Time Capsule for all wirelessly connected devices
    cheers
    Joe

is this easy enough to do - ie. a find- and clickable option upon setup?
As regards roaming - where would I need to configure this? as far as I am aware I have not seen this option in my speedport, nor the network connections on my PC type notebooks.
Bridge is best done manually.. if you use the v6 utility it has ability to automatically setup what it thinks is the best configuration but in reality is often not.. ie it will tend to not use bridge. So you simply click edit in the airport utility and go to the network tab. Bridge is a single option.
Once configured in bridge the TC will do all the necessary changes. eg WAN port is transferred to LAN.. to make it as effective as possible in that mode. You set the wireless tab to still create a wireless network.
Roaming is purely a setup which you do yourself.
    See the doco. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260
It doesn't matter that you are not using two Apple routers.
It is simple setup... trivial even.
Set the wireless name in the TC to the same as the existing router's SSID
Set the security to the same level.. that should always be WPA2 AES now which apple calls WPA2 Personal.
    Same password.
It is good but not required to separate the two devices by a couple of meters. Even using the TC in another room connected back by ethernet would be excellent.. but not at all required. Both devices having wireless for 2.4ghz set to auto is not the best.. I would manually set at least one..
The AC works only on 5ghz and is not going to be affected by the speedport at all.
Why do you want the TC as router??
Soimply put: Because I understood it could act as one? And it promised at first sight to provide a more powerful WLAN connectivity as opposed to my current speedport, which runs n standard but not ac standard
    thx
The WLAN power is unaffected by using the TC in bridge or router mode.
You have multiple options.. as mentioned .. roaming is only one.. you can simply turn the wireless off on the speedport. Wireless is still active on the TC in bridge mode.
BUT you do lose one function.. that is guest wireless.. when you bridge the TC. If you would like to still have a guest wireless you can do that by using the speedport wireless with a different name to the TC.. ie you have exactly the same setup as guest wireless.. only instead of using a single wireless router you have two which is far superior.
Anything that doesn't make sense.. it is probably easier to figure out after Christmas and you can play with the real world device.. post again if you have issues and we are happy to offer solutions.
    Merry Christmas.

  • Apple time capsule and BT Hub 3

I have just swapped over to BT and have recieved the Hub 3.
My original setup was using an apple time capsule providing my WIFI network, and then using the previous ISP router just acting as a modem. I would like to do the same with the BT home hub 3 as I have a reasonable complicated WIFI network for which the time capsule is already set up and working fine and I do not want to change this.
All I am wanting to do is plug the time capsule into the HUB 3 using an ethernet cable, but I cannot seem to get it to work. The previous router had a WAN port, but the HUB 3 does not seem to have one. Any ideas?

    Hey Tommy,
I anticipate being in a similar situation to Roger, in that I’ve three WiFi computers [1] that I need to migrate...
    • from – Virgin Media FTTP modem » ethernet cable » Apple Time Capsule
    • to – BT Infinity FTTC Openreach modem » ethernet cable » Apple Time Capsule
...during or after the BT engineer’s BT Infinity installation visit next Thursday.
Thanks for your tips on integrating an existing Apple Time Capsule into a BT Infinity set-up. As I understand you, you’re suggesting swapping from the regular BT Infinity set-up...
The regular BT Infinity set-up (source image page)
...for an Apple Time Capsule based BT Infinity set-up, like this:
An Apple Time Capsule based BT Infinity set-up (source – tommybobbins suggestion in the post above this one)
But AFAIK, it’s the BT Home Hub 3 that provides support for the mutual aid BT FON network; am I correct in thinking this Apple Time Capsule based BT Infinity set-up would deprive other BT customers of a BT FON WiFi hotspot?
    AN ALTERNATIVE SET-UP SUGGESTION
I notice that the Openreach modem actually has what looks like two identical LAN ethernet ports side by side:

So is it feasible to set up both the BT Home Hub 3 AND an Apple Time Capsule with just the addition of a second ethernet cable?
    For instance:
A dual Apple Tim Capsule + BT Home Hub 3 Infinity set-up
    Would this set-up work?
If so, would it provide a seamless migration for my three WiFi computers (once the Time Capsule’s been reconfigured with Airport Utility to use PPPoE, as per your instructions), AND a mutual aid BT FON network WiFi hotspot?

  • What is best method to discard a used Apple Time Capsule

I have a Time Capsule which became defective.  How should I discard this piece of equipment?  Is there any security issue regarding data on the hard drive?

The files on the hard disk are sadly still accessible to a knowledge person..
I would open the TC.. remove the hard disk. See https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule
Then you can plug the hard disk into a USB hard drive cradle you can obtain from any large computer store for a few dollars or millions on ebay.. and plug it into your computer and wipe it. You can then put the HDD back into the TC and sell it as broken on ebay.. there is plenty of demand for broken ones for parts.
If all of that seems over the top.. take it to your apple store and ask for it to be disposed of. Apple should be able to offer a secure disposal service. Since the failure of the device is their fault.. and the lack of ability to remove the hard disk is also a design flaw.. well it is easy enough for them to dispose of properly.
If it is a Gen1 or Gen2 .. you can buy a replacement power supply on ebay for $40 or so and fix it up .. then you can sell it off working.
See my website for more info on how to repair.

  • How to re-initialise an Apple time capsule to a different WiFi network

Upgraded the Netcom WiFi hub to a Netgear Wfi hub and the nether won’t recognise the time capsule to perform backups as and when prompted.

    Lapastenaque
I have been on the chat line with Apple Tech.
I have realised that the only way the Time Capsule was made to work the initial setup, was the the Netcomm wifi hub had 1 ethernet jack.
An ethernet cable was connected from the wifi hub to the net port of the Time Capsule.
With the Netgear mobile wifi broadband modem hub, no ethernet outlet is provided for this model.
It then remained to simply connect a hard wired ethernet cable from the MBP to the Time Capsule ethernet port.
This then re-established the wifi network, “without the wifi” but a hard connected ethernet cable.
The Apple time capsule cannot be utilised to engage wifi direct to the internet via a third party mobile wifi hub.
It defies common sense to call it a wifi hub that cannot connect via the 802.11 mode to the internet.
It is a deliberate by negative inbuilt design flaw that Apple are of no mind to remedy.
For now the Time Machine backups are taking place on regulated times set by the software.
I thank you for your endeavour to lend assistance to the resolution of this query I had about the Time Capsule and use of Time Machine protocol.
