Network applications, network applications

I have Office:Mac 2011 running on my laptop with a single user licence; I also have an iMac desktop that I tend to use at home (bigger screen etc.)
Is it possible to run Office without actually installing it on the iMac, using the laptop as a server and networking the two together?

Apps can only be run from the network if they were designed and developed to do so.

  • File associations in Windows 8.1 for applications on a network location

    Hi,
From Windows 7 to Windows 8 it has been done alot of changes regarding file file assocations. It seem that the main reason was security and was "patched" by having Windows read the hash for the applications instead of where the application was
    located.
but there seem to be some major hicups and there is limited info on the web covering these issues.
First issue: when running:  Dism /Online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations:\\Server\Share\AppAssoc.xml and then creating a GPO configuration pointing to
thi XML file.  With this feature only common file extensions is supported and when users are changing to another computer, these settings is not possible to syncronize using roaming profiles.
Second issue: In the appassoc.xml file applications must be either appid(metro app) or common application on local harddrive to be registered and not a .EXE
    file on a network location.
It seems a little strange if this is the case and if there is no other options for administratos to set file associations in more flexible ways. Does anyone have some more info on
this topic other than these link:

    https://keithga.wordpress.com/2013/11/13/file-associations-in-windows-8/

    Hi Primeid,
You could use Group policy for file associations or you could deploy the xml file during image deployment. However as you mentioned that the file associations only applies to common application on local hard drive or metro app.

We understand your confusion about this, but we hope you understand that using network location for file association deployment is highly insecure and it is out of our recommendation since the content in that network location could be changed without any
    notification or permissions constraint.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • AppV 5: Sequence shortcut to application located on network share

    Hello,
We have an application which is programmed to run directly from a network share.
However, it needs some parts installed locally on the client too, to make it work.
During sequencing using App-V 5.0, I installed the parts necessary on the client, and I created a shortcut to the network path e.g.: \\server\share\application.exe
The sequencing process works fine, and the application gets published correctly to an App-V client.
However, when launching the application we receive an error "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000142). Click OK to close the application."
In Event Viewer we notice following error in Applications and Services > Microsoft > AppV > Client > Virtual Applications: "The virtual applicatoin '\\server\share\application.exe' could not be started because the App-V Subsystem 'Virtual Shell'
    could not be initialized. {error:0x8DC02325-0x52E}"
We notice that the sequenced application shortcut references: "\\server\share\application.exe  /appvve:557B23AE-4942-4E3E-BE5F-1DA010EA7DAE_C7B3C423-6E9A-4CE9-AC18-59C7F18F3FA1"
When launching the application directly (\\server\share\application.exe - without appvve parameter) it works fine (but at that moment it's missing the locally installed client components).
When running the same application with parameter 'appvve', it fails (error message above).
When copying the application to a local drive, it does run succesfully when using the 'appvve' parameter, but unfortunately this is not a supported scenario for the application we're talking about. It has to be run from the network share.
So am I correct to say that App-V does not support running an executable located on a network share in the virtual bubble? Are there any solutions/workarounds to make this work anyway?
I tried mapping the network share to a drive letter, but that didn't help either.

I have used a vbscript to start the exe from within the package, install whatever you need, then make the vbs in the installdir locally (c:)
    Dim objShell
    Set objShell = WScript.CreateObject( "WScript.Shell" )
    objShell.Run("K:\Whatever")
    Set objShell = Nothing
Make a shortcut to the VBS and change the icon and stop the capture

  • Crashes when running applications from network share - "Windows cannot access the file for one of the following reasons"

    Hi,
starting a couple of weeks ago, we get the following error(s) when running applications from a network share. We don't know what causes this, we are not aware of any major changes in our network infrastructure or client/Server configuration. We did upgrade
a lot of machines to Windows 8, but the issue also occurs on older Win7 computers.
We figured out a workaround though: The applications run fine when launching from a FQDN share (like
\\share.domain.Company.com) and only cause problems when running from
\\share directly. They have worked fine for years without FQDN though.
    Any ideas?

    User Action
    1. Open the file again. This situation might be a temporary problem that corrects itself when the program runs again.
    2. If the file still cannot be accessed and
    - It is on the network, your network administrator should verify that there is not a problem with the network and that the server can be contacted.
    - It is on a removable disk, for example, a floppy disk or CD-ROM, verify that the disk is fully inserted into the computer.
    3. Check and repair the file system by running CHKDSK. To run CHKDSK, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then click OK. At the command prompt, type CHKDSK /F, and then press ENTER.
    4. If the problem persists, restore the file from a backup copy.
    5. Determine whether other files on the same disk can be opened. If not, the disk might be damaged. If it is a hard disk, contact your administrator or computer hardware vendor for further assistance.

    Hi,
    >>The applications run fine when launching from a FQDN share
It sounds like a DNS suffix issue. When this issue occurs, please try to ping share on the client, then check if the corresponding IP address is correct. If the IP address is wrong, please adjust your settings of DNS to make sure that the client can resolve
    the share correctly.
If it's very hard to change the settings of the DNS for some reason, as a work around, we can add the entry into the clients' hosts file.
    Best Regards.

  • "Network settings have be changed by another application" stuck in loops

I have the exact problem as others with Network System Preferences saying that the settings have been changed by another application. The message goes into a loop that can only be stopped with a Force Quit of the Preferences. I also have the Airport not connecting at start-up without choosing the Network Name from the Airport Pull down menu. I also think it may have started with the last Security upgrade and Java upgrade. I have used the airport utility to reconfig the base station. I discovered a system keychain with a password for the airport that my normal passwords would not open to show what it's password was. I have done many disk permissions and verifications. Any ideas? I would think if this is a Security update error, that Apple would be aware of it by now and post a repair. I have followed some threads on this issue but would rather wait for an Apple fix. There appears to be no way to contact Apple in customer support.

A Fix for "Your network preferences have been changed by another application" Error
In the Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ folder delete the following:
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    NetworkInterfaces.plist
    preferences.plist
    com.apple.nat.plist
You will have to re-configure all your network settings since deleting these files will cause them to be returned to defaults.

I want to be able to totally block the FaceTime functionality in my home network so my 4 kids aren't using the Facetime feature- It was easy for Skype just had to enter the work Skype on my Router Security list- and it denies access. I would like to do this at the router level for FaceTime? Only site I find in init.ess.apple.com - is this the startup site for Facetime?   Does anyone know a site I can block, hostname or IP address that the FaceTime application uses? Or which port it connects to?

I would presume so, but it might be worth your while to experiment and play around with different combinations to see if you can block FaceTime while keeping Game Center open.  Good luck!

  • Distributed application: Networked Shared Variables, Named Services (Raw TCP/IP) or Other?

    Happy New Year NI forums!
I am working on a project involving mobile interacting robots. In the future it is likely the application's components may need to run on different PCs (Targets). Note: at this point in time all the components are seperate but all running on the localhost machine. Thinking towards the future I want to pick the 'best' architecture to allow all these components (VIs performing various functions) in multiple locations. For example, several VIs on the Robots, VIs on serveral PCs.
I am  currently aware of using Server/Client TCP/IP using named services. My mock up works well, but is it time efficient (my time coding) I wonder.. ?
Whereas I am aware of networked shared variables which handle connections and all the parsing for the underlying tcp/ip communication. But will this be difficult the manage? I am unsure if I can associate shared variables with a VI similar to named services. I suppose I could pro grammatically create the variable upon initialization of the server component - and the client could just search the list of avaiaible variables to connect too. Downside this would require DSC module.
As you can see, I am rather unsure. Any advice would be great!

    Hi Jason,
Thanks for your reply. I hope your enjoying NI UK as much as I did.. fun times!
I have seen the link you posted a few times before. But today, I took a better look at it.
My issue is I need several multi-client severs, i.e. many servers which allow multiple clients to connect to them.
Now the STM does have an example of this - STM mutli-client Example - Server.vi (used with the STM mutli-client.vi)
However, when a make copies of these code (to have my second server) - it refuses to run. As in , it just stops itself.
I DID change the port number, on the lister aspect of the server code. But I Am unsure what else I would need to change to get this setup to work?
One thought I had was, the FIFOs all having the same name - this probably isn't a good idea between servers.
    Any suggestions would be grateful!
*please could you provide me email support

  • Moving an Application to a Networked Computer

    Hi everyone,
I hope you can help please!
I'm running a program called 'the specialist' on an imac... and would like to run it on a power mac g4 which is part of the same network. The program was originally located under /User/shared - so I copied the application file across to /User/shared on the other computer... when I attempt to run the program from the g4, it crashes (well the rainbow wheel just keeps on rolling)... so I was wondering if there was somewhere else I should look for other supporting files?
Also, when I tried to run the program on the imac using the g4 via the network it had the same problem.
    Any tips please?!
    Thanks!
    Lauren

Lauren, I'm guessing that the '3 launches' probably refers to a trial phase used when evaluating the product after which you'd need to purchase it.
As to finding out where the other files are - well, you could do a Finder search (ask me if unsure how) and you may get some idea where other files relating to this application are, but this is assuming that they all have a name reference to the original product, if they don't then unless you know what to look for you simply won't find them all. Not having the original disk is a problem.

  • Abap trial version - see a web dynpro application from an external network

    Hi gurus,
I'm testing web dynpro using SAP Netweawer 7.01 trial version.
I would like to show a web dypro application to someone that is not in my local network.
    If the URL generated is
    http://localhost:8000/sap/bc/webdynpro/sap/<zapplication>
visible from my notebook, what should be the URL visible from someone that is not me?
Is it possible? Or I'am too optimistic?
    Thanks
    Guido

    >I think you can not run the Application of trial version from other Systems .
Sure you can.  The URL that gets generated is for localhost.  This allows for access to the trial system from the local laptop only - but bypassing the Fully Qualified Domain Name check. You can alter this setting by changing the icm/hostname_full instance profile parameter. You should change this to a fully qualified domain name that is registered for the machine that the system is installed on within your DNS.  The rest is up to how you have your machine configured on the network. In some networks, workstation names are not registered into DNS and you would have to setup a hosts file entry for the IP address of the trial version system onto the client you want to connect from.  Other networks do allow the hostname of all client machines to register into their DNS.  You would have to check and see how your particular network is setup.
