  • Best backup software? For businesses

    Hey guys,
I am looking for a backup software which i program schedules.
I need something that can be set to backup every few mins to daily/weekly. Most important thing is to backup even open files?
Maybe an open PST file or a document a user is working on.
    Any ideas ?

    Hi,
i will suggest you to go with storageCraft - shadow protect IT edition.
It is cool because it perform backup via disk sector and not file level. Therefore back up & restoration speed is so much faster compare to other products.
With capabilities of High availabilties, virtual boot, image mounting for files recovery & also bare metal restoration.
Trust me because i am one of the users for this product. Really cool

  • Network Backup problems

Hopefully i'm in the right forum!
I have three macs which i usually backup over a network using Netvault Backbone software. Due to a recent hardware failure, one mac has been completely re-installed complete with a new hdd (os 10.5.8), and another has been upgraded to 10.6.1.
The third machine hosts the backup software and also the tape drive (and runs on 10.4.11).
I now find that one of the macs does not appear in the Netvault software, regardless of what i try. I have pinged all machines from all others and all pings work ok.
One thing i have noticed is that both the client machines have somehow given themselves the same machine name. The newly re-installed system has given itself the same name as my other mac.
Netvault uses the machine name as part of its recognition process so this is possibly the reason...however, I have no idea how the computers get these names, or how i can go about editing them, or even where i go to find the name.
    Please help!!

Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the prompt:
    cd /
    sudo pico /etc/hosts
You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed.
Pico is a simple editor but it's adequate to make a few changes to your hosts file. When you've made your changes press CTRL-X. You'll then be prompted about saving before quitting.

  • The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features.

I am trying to set up timeMachine on my new mac book pro over a regular home network on a shared network drive. I have tried everything but I keep getting "The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features." I am on lion with the lateset unpdate (10.7.4). I have even tried creating sparebundles on from tutorial that I have found online, but non of the hacks that I have tried seemed to work. Have anyone figured out a way around this? If so, can you share, it will be greatful. I could just buy the time capsule that apple sells but I already have a 2TB internal HDD in an old pc that's hosting my file server so no need for the time capsule hardware. Let me know if there is a way around this thank.

Not just any NAS.  It has to support the communications protocols used by Time Machine (some involving security, some about error detection and handling).  Some NASs never supported TM; some that worked on Leopard never got updated for Snow Leopard; and some that worked on Snow Leopard still haven't been updated for Lion.
    4) Another networked mac (not a pc)
A Mac running Leopard 10.5.6 or later.
    Are these the only options?
Those are the only options supported by Apple.  Some other destinations may work, to some degree, in some circumstances.  Some require "hacks" or other workarounds.  Most are somewhat unreliable, and, may stop working at all on the next OSX upgrade.
Side note. I've been seeing some online post of how some people are setting up TM on a networked PC drive by setting up a sparsebundle like this site:
Any thoughts? I have tried some of these examples and it don't seem to work...
Some of those may have worked at one time, in some circumstances (2 are dated before Lion was released, the other is undated).
Wireless backups are tricky enough to a supported destination, with all the security and error detection and handling Apple has been able to employ.   If your backups are important to you, don't trust them to a marginal scheme.
And, in any event, don't trust your backups to a single piece of hardware or software.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for an explanation and some suggestions.

  • What Backup Software???

I'm backing up a couple of terabytes on my Mac Pro to a local hard disk and (as a long time Retrospect user) I reached out to Retrospect 8.1 but now I think I need to consider other backup software alternatives due to a number of issues plaguing Retrospect such as: poor performance, clunky interface, glitchy behavior, no documentation, etc.
What are you using for local and/or small network backups? Most of my data is on my Mac Pro with some on my MacBook Pro. I have recently learned about BRU via a popular hosting company.
    Thoughts? What should I consider?
    Thanks,
    Robert

Does Time Machine allow me to write to a second HD as the first one is filled? I think the answer is no.
Sort of. TM will back-up only to a single volume at a time. You can combine 2 or more into a +Concatenated Raid Set+ (aka "Just a Bunch of Disks"), and use it as your TM backup volume, but it doesn't sound like that's quite what you want.
You can also swap backup disks easily: use one for a week or so, then take it off-site and swap with another. Each will contain a full, but independent, set of backups. All you have to do is use the +Change Disk+ option in TM Preferences, and try not to go more than about 10 days between swaps, as TM may decide to do a full backup instead of an incremental.
One of the advantages of TM is, via the use of "multi-links," it only backs up what's changed, hourly, but each backup is, in effect, a full, complete copy of your entire system. That's good for full restores (after a hard drive failure, for example), but also to quickly find and recover previous versions of items that were changed or deleted in error ("Save" instead of "Save As"), or somehow corrupted.
It's not a traditional archive-style system, as it automatically deletes your oldest backups when it needs room for new ones, so you have a rotating set of recent backups. But since each is, in effect, a full backup, you don't lose anything current or recent.
Other folks use TM for their boot drive, containing most of their data, and another app for such things as photos, music, and/or video, especially if that is relatively static.
If you haven't investigated Time Machine much yet, you might want to review these:

  • Can't find my data from Time Machine network backup

Migration assistant shows inconsistent sizes for applications, computer settings and other files/folders, about 30GB when I had 270 GB only in pictures.
I did a clean Mavericks install.
How do I find my data from the TimeMachine network backup?
The size of the TimeMachine backup is consistent with what I had before ( >300 GB)...so how do I recover it?.
I'm using a new user account name in the clean installation.
    Thanks

Read a few threads about this being a problem with account access, so I renamed the account in my new installation to the account name used to create the backup and found the old accounts....now when trying to proceed it told me there was a conflict with the account name and i had to use a different one!!.
Apple has stopped to be simple...
So how are we suppose to use the migration assistant if either way there is a problem? ( using same or different account name )...

  • Problem with Java and APC Network Shutdown Software

I am having an issue with APC's Network shutdown software. On any Win2k Server I load the software on after logging off from the console I am unable to reconnect to the web interface for the APC Powerchute Network Shutdown software. If I stop and restart the Powerchute Network shutdown service it is fine again until I log back off.
I opened a support ticket with APC but they told me this is due to a bug with the underlying JAVA software and I had to get support from Sun for this issue. They referenced Sun Bug Number #4619811 but when I checked that bug out it did not have a solution.
Any thoughts, this only seems to be affecting Win2k Servers, Win2k3 Servers work just fine.

    Hi cptjim,
i have exactly the same problem on two totaly different Win2k3 machines.
APC told me to try the following (i havent tried so far, but will test and report on monday):
To find the APC Powerchute Network Shutdown Service in the registry, use the following path:

Open up the AppParameters folder, right click, go to Modify and Add -Xrs before the following entry:

  • HT3275 Since updating OS to Mountain Lion from leopard, I get the following error message when trying to backup with time machine on external drive.  Could not complete backup to media share.  The network backup disk does not support the required AFP feat

Since updating OS to Mountain Lion from leopard, I get the following error message when trying to backup with time machine on external drive.  "Could not complete backup to media share.  The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features."  What are AFP features and how do I get Time Machine to backup to my current external backup?

This means that your NAS does not support the required encryption. Update your NAS to the latest firmware or ditch it and buy a Time Capsule (they are the most reliable when using TM).

  • TimeMachine network backup crashing my computer

I have a USB drive attached to my router and available via samba. I've followed the instructions available from multiple sources online on how to set this drive up as a TM backup, and it works fine. However, every so often, I will notice that fsck_hfs is running, eating up 20% or more CPU, with kernel_task taking another 10-15%. When I disable TM or turn off airport, this problem ceases. If I leave fsck_hfs go long enough, my system locks up and I need to hard reboot.
Two questions: a) is this a known bug, and if so is there a workaround? b) can I tell my system not to run fsck_hfs on remote drives? I consider (b) a viable option and I really don't care about the consequences - I would much rather rebuild my TM sparsebundle every month then have my computer crash every day.

    jdidion wrote:
BTW, are you saying that if I instead attach this drive to my linux server and attach TM via AFP that Apple will support this in the event that the fsck_hfs problem still occurs?
If it meets this criteria: +*If your backup disk is on a network, the network server must use Apple File Protocol (AFP) file sharing, and both your computer, and the networked backup disk, should have Mac OS X 10.5.6 or later.+*
It's way beyond my level of expertise, but this post in another forum may contain the key:
The technical reason why Apple limits Time Machine to 10.5 AFP volumes appears to be to prevent disk image corruption. There were additional features added to AFP in 10.5 to support Time Machine. These presumably allow the disk image engine to force disk image journal data to write out all the way to the disk. Without such features, a network interruption can result in a corrupted filesystem on the disk image despite journaling. Remember, journaling relies on the journal being written all the way to disk before the changes take place. If you can't guarantee that (e.g., because of network/NAS buffering) then the journal is useless. Time Machine appears to rely heavily on disk journaling to deal with network drop-outs, interrupted backups, and the like. Take this away and your data is at risk.
If the NAS you are using supports these features it should report them to the OS and you should natively be able to choose that volume. If you have to trick the OS to use the volume it means the NAS does not support it.
To summarize: if you care about your backup data you should avoid using non-natively supported AFP servers.

  • Time machine stalling with network backup to Live Duo

I'm running Mountain Lion (10.8.2) and using a Western Digital Live Duo (NAS with 6TB set up with RAID1 (mirror)) for backup with Time Machine (TM). The WD Live Duo has a specific feature for supporting Time Machine and shares a partition for TM backup, but something is wacky as TM came up a few days ago saying that it had validated the backup and needed to create a new backup.
The NAS is available on the network, I can easily access it from multiple computers on our home network as well as from the iMac I'm trying to backup.
I'm connected to the NAS via a network switch (1000/100/10) that both the NAS and this iMac are connected to using Gigabit ethernet wired connections.
Time machine has been running for 2 days now and reports " 67.63GB of 363.44 GB - About 5 days" . Yesterday it said 4 days.. ;-)
I've been having issues with TM stalling and eating up all the resources when I was just backing up to a local USB drive.
Is there any other control for TM that is not visible? Where would I find the TM logs to see if something else is going on?
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks.

Backing up with Time Machine to a third-party network device is unsupported by Apple and unreliable. Most if not all such devices use the obsolete "netatalk" implementation of AFP, which doesn't meet the technical requirements for a Time Machine server. I strongly suggest you back up to two or more locally attached external hard drives. If you want network backup, use an Apple Time Capsule or another Mac with File Sharing active as the destination.

  • In need of backup software

Hello there. Does anyone have a recommendation for good backup software? I need something that can syncronize some of my folders to an external hard drive. Thank.

My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

  • Need backup software for Seagate external hard drive

I need a little handholding here. I have an iBook G4 running 10.4.10. My husband bought me a Seagate external hard drive to use to back up the hard drive on my iBook. The only problem is that I don't think the external hard drive came with any software. I'm looking for something that I can set once that will automatically back up my hard drive periodically. Does such a thing exist?
Thanks for any advice you can provide.

    Hi there-
Most good backup software allows you to schedule backups. I've tried a number of programs and the two best I've found are SuperDuper and Synk.
Both are very user-friendly--good for simple folks like me.
    http://www.decimus.net/
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
SuperDuper is my favorite because it easily allows you to "clone" your hard drive, giving you a bootable backup in case the worst happens to your computer and you need to restore everything. It's MUCH faster than reinstalling everything. You need to make sure your external hard drive is capable of being booted from, however.
Synk is also very user friendly and you can try it for 30 days for free. I would highly recommend either of these.
    Hope this helps.

  • RELIABLE data backup software recommendation for MacBook Pro WANTED!

I own Retrospect 6.x and I must say that on the intel platform it is less than stellar. On my 15" Powerbook I would get about 90MB/minute and on my new 17" MacBook Pro I am getting about 30MB/minute, which is taking FOREVER. Can someone PLEASE recommend some reliable data backup software in universal binary that will obtain backup speeds similar to what I use to get out of Retrospect on my powerbook? Thank you kindly!

    Welcome to the forum,
If you don’t have a .Mac account, you may want to consider it. It has a fairly respectable BackUp feature that’s quite good and very well integrated to your Mac. I strongly recommend it. Can’t say much compared to the speed of Retrospect although it does perform incremental backups as well as a host of other options. Hope that you may find this useful, etc.

  • I need free network analyzer software for my mac. we are trying to monitor what software may be running which is causing our internet to fail, although the internet is still coming into our modem.what is recommended?

My internet keeps 'tripping' at or around the same period time each day.  We have already replaced our modem from our internet provider and we bought a new airport extreme router. We do not believe these were the cause, although we have now ruled them out as a cause.  Everytime the internet fails, our internet provider company tells us that there is still plenty of signal coming into our house. There is something going on inside we believe, and a technician set up our Network Utility to run a continuous ping test to capture information about when it 'trips' againn.  Yesterday, it happened again, and when he checked the data out, he said he is sure there is something 'running in the background' on my IMac.  He advised me to download a free Network Analyzer so he could further investigate what is was that was causing the problem, so I need a free network analyzer software for my Mac. The issue has been going on for a long time, so it is not the new operating system, Lion. This morning, we changed the radio channel from 'auto' to 'manual' and set a new channel, hoping that might help. We are trying to find out what program may be running (even a tiny one in the background) which is causing our internet to fail, although the internet is still coming into our modem. What is free downloadable product is recommended?

Will Activity Monitor and/or Network Utility, both already in the Utilities folder on your Mac, help in trying to diagnose the problem.
If you are connecting via wifi what encryption are you using? If you're using the Exteme I doubt that you are using WEP, but worth checking as it seems Macs don't like it and work better using WPA.
