Network Browser Problem

I have accidentally deleted the Network Browser from my finder windows. Now, I can't see anybody on my network if I go via my Computer name or Go > Network or Go > Connect to server. I can obviously still connect to people, because I have a folder that I use regularly kept in my dock and when I click on that I can still connect to that PC... so it is just not "browsing" properly.
Any help please.

I'm having the same problem, i have the network icon, but no ability to browse around. I did a day to two ago (I think), I may have deleted something. We just added a new computer (G5) and are moving other hardware around.

Not sure if this is the right forum but it's worth a try. When I pull down the "GO" menu in the Finder and select "Network" the window will open for just a second and then closes. I can still open a window in the finder and select the network button and it works fine so this is just a small problem but it would be nice if everything worked like it should.

Try removing the Finder preferences and see it it helps. The best way to do this is to drag the file…
    YOUR-HOME-DIRECTORY/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
… to your Desktop and restart. This will create a new preference file. If you problem goes away then get, however, you will need to reset your Finder preferences. If it doesn't work drag the newly created file to the Trash, put the original file back and restart.

  • Network Browser/Shared Sidebar loses Computers (Bonjour problem?)

in 10.5.1, when I start up my G5, I see in the Shared Sidebar and Network Browser (Shift-Cmd-K) my G3 and my MacBook Pro, like it's supposed to.
After some time (maybe a few days of uptime--I'm not sure), that stops working. Despite no changes being done to the G3 or MBP, they no longer show up in the two places.
I can still connect to them with a Cmd-K/using afp://address, at which point they'll show up in the sidebar.
If I restart the G5, everything goes back to normal. (Restarting the G3 or MBP does nothing).
It seems clear that "Bonjour" is stopping noticing the other computers on the network.
Is there someway to, for lack of a better term, refresh or restart Bonjour's monitoring?

I have the same issue. Different Netgear router - but I don't think that's the root cause. I've seen this in the last few months. My Snow Leopard Macbook-Pro seems to be very flaky wrt bonjour. This has included a D-Link wireless router, a Linksys WAG54G2 (purchased and returned as I thought it was to blame), and now a Netgear DG834G.
On these networks, bonjour seems to be fine (I also have a linux box and a windows machine at the moment) until I add a Snow Leopard laptop into the mix (connected wirelessly - although don't know if that matters). Within a minute the bonjour entries on other machines get crapped on. e.g. 'crapping on' extends out to the router (if you look at the Attached Devices list many entries disappear after adding the Snow Leopard box to the network - the router still handles traffic to the nodes, and they still exist in the dhcp leases file on the router though).
At this point my theory is that snow leopard is sending some ill-formed bonjour packets. I haven't looked into proving that. If someone is better versed in bonjour I can send some tcpdump data.
All these computers lived happily on a linksys wrt54g network before. If I have time in the next few days I'll set one of those up and see if that too no longer works. If it breaks, I'd be convinced snow leopard was to blame, and be pointing my finger at the update from November or December (can't remember the exact date, but it was late last year). I'm pretty sure my ability to see my apple tv and talk to it was stable prior to that.

  • "NI Network Browser Error!" When Using 'DataSocket Select URL'

We have two LV 7.1.1-built executables running on two different computers that are networked together.  Each executable starts the DataSocket Server on their own computer and then attempts to read from the other computer's DataSocket Server.  Everthing works well if both computers are running XP SP2 or SP3.
The problem occurs when one of the OS's is Windows 2000  SP3.  The executable on the XP computer can see the DataSocket items in the 'DataSocket Select URL' window on the Windows 2000 computer.  However, on the Windows 2000 computer, if you open the 'DataSocket Select URL' window, and try to browse the DataSocket items on the XP computer, one of the following dialogs appears:
    NI Network Browser Error!
Cannot enumerate items in this hierarchy
    Cannot open a network enumeration
    0x000004b8
    An extended error has ocurred.
    OR
    NI Network Browser Error!
Cannot enumerate items in this heirarchy
    Cannot open a network enumeration
    0x00000035
The volume path was not found
This is usually followed by a DataSocket Read error of 214701483 (this looks like a COM object error, but for once, Google didn't have anything to say about it).
There was a similar post to this one in which Manuel Wielander suggests setting the 'Authentication Level' to 'Connect' and the 'Impersonation Level' to 'Identify'.  He also suggested adding 'ole.AuthnLevel=1' to the executable's ini file.  None of these suggestions work.  I have also added every exception imaginable to the Windows XP firewall with no luck.
Anyone dare to step into the networking abyss with me on this one?  Much thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

  • Solution: Can't See Windows PC's via Tiger 10.4.2 Network Browser

Please see this post, I could not reply with the solution to this post because it was archived.
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=725372#725372
    Here's the solution:
In Directory Access v1.2, You MUST capitalize the first letter of the Workgroup name, and ONLY the first letter.
    Here's why:
In the version of Directory Access provided with Panther (v1.1.4) when setting the workgroup name in directory access, if you change the name from the default "WORKGROUP", it is acceptable to user all upper case; in my system it was "NETWORK".
After upgrading to Tiger, Windows network connectivity stopped working; we could not "see" Windows PC's via the Tiger Network Browser. We struggled for months with this issue.
It turns out that Directory Access is upgraded to version 1.2 when upgrading to Tiger. Once the upgrade to Tiger is complete, if you check the Directory Access App, the Workgroup name is carried over exactly as it was entered; again in my case NETWORK.
I have found that Directory Access 1.2 will accept all UPPER CASE or all lower case letters for a workgroup name, but if all upper case letters or lower case letters are used, you will NOT be able to view the Workgroup via the Finder's Network Browser.
    Acceptable:
    Workgroup
    Network
    Mshome
    NOT ACCEPTABLE
    WORKGROUP
    NETWORK
    workgroup
    network
    mshome
    etc
Interestingly, in Directory Access 1.2, if your Workgroup name was carried over from a prior version, or if you simply entered the name after install or upgrade as lower case or UPPER CASE, Directory access will "add" the correct name in the drop-down list below the incorrect entry. Simply click the drop down list, select the Workgroup name with the proper capitalization and the ability to see Widows PC's via the Finder's Network Browser is fixed.
I've reported this to Apple Engineers.
    Hope this helps someone.

i've got almost the same problem, the only difference is that when i try to go to my mac mini via IP, is the only way that windows can see the mac (on my case) and all the time sais that the Desktop folder was removed from the original place, that happens everytime that i copy or cut some file...ohhh and when i try to connect from the mac mini to the PC it sais that the alias could not be fixed and if i wanna fixit...doesn't do much really, and when i try to connect from the g4 to mini sais that the connection was failed because it took to much time and for the g4 to work again i've got to relaunch the finder. I'm under a Dlink router.
    Please help.
PD: the versions of the OS's are:
    Phanter: 10.3.9
    Tiger: 10.4.5

  • NI 9014 is not detect NI network browser and MUX

    Hi,
I have been dealing with NI cRio 9014.
Now, I face a problem with detecting the cRio in MUX and NI network browser after upgrading  the new drives and Labview software. Simply it doesn’t detect at all. I have set correct subnet and IP in my machine.
Currently install configuration in my machine is shown below
    MUX version = 5.3.0f0
    LabVIEW version =  11.0.1f2 (32bit)
    OS = Windows 7
I could barely detect the device if I right click on the remote systems in MUX, Create New, Remote Device (not on the local subnet) and then enter the IP address. But I am 100% sure that I have set the correct local subnet in my machine. Interesting even if the NI 9014 is force to detect by this way it still be undetected by NI Network browser.
In the XP machine, in which MUX version 5.0.0f1 and LabVIEW 10.0.f2(32 bit) installed in, detects NI 9014 within a second.
This problem is a big headache for me. Specially, after format the disk from W7 machine it is not detected whatsoever from the same machine  and have to reformat the disk from xp machine and need to be configured from the xp machine.
If you guys could help me to fix this it would be really nice.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hello,
If you still has problems to detect the cRIO-9014 in MAX you can start to have a look at the points suggested in this article:
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/ABE4BC247E8AC9BC8625734E005CAB42?OpenDocument
Especially the points about the firewall and compatibility could be of interest. What software is installed on the cRIO?
Please let us know how it goes.

  • T41 has Network Controller problem

I was given a T41 2373-7JU that I loaded with XP Pro. My problem is it will not  connect to the internet via it's browser. In Device Manager it shows a Network Controller problem and I've been unable to correct this no matter how many different drivers I've tried. Also, how do I tell if there's an internal  wireless card inside?  It did connect to the internet earlier today using my USB adaptor but now I can't even do that anymore. I've tried a dozen or so solutions without any success so where should I go from here?

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Following are the drivers you need for Ethernet and wifi card (and yes, as per support page there's an internal card installed in your system):-
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-62922
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-42683
To install the drivers successfully, you need to run the .exe setups from C:\Drivers.... for each device after the first setup completes.
For ethernet, the setup is in C:\DRIVERS\Win\ETHERNET\PRO1000\Win32 and for wifi C:\DRIVERS\WLLANCSC.
    Hope this helps.

  • Network Browser Window Refresh

Does anyone know how to force the Network Browser window to refresh quicker? I'm not talking about just refreshing the information a computer thinks it knows about who is out there in my local network, but to actively look and see who is out there.
Seems to me this was instantaneous back in Classic's Network browser and Chooser>AppleShare window.
Case in point; Three Macs (two are OSX 10.3.9, one is Classic 9.2.2) are up and running. Three icons appear in NB (10.3.9), the other two computers and the server alias. Start up the third one, and it takes so long for the new machine to show up even after it's been on for a while.
I know that the new machine is broadcasting because it shows up on the Classic Mac.
    Any one else notice this?

The whole Networking/Internet sharing issue is a vexed issue for me. For what it's worth here is my current Stickie note about my own problems:
"Notes on Networking and Internet sharing:
When you turn on Internet sharing via the "Network" Preference pane on the "gateway" Mac, you should also visit the "Sharing" Preference pane and enable "Personal Web Sharing". If you fail to do this, the "downstream" computers will not be able to browse the Internet. (No need to turn on "Personal Web Sharing" for the "downstream" computers). This proviso is stated in Mac Help.
Sometimes the Sidebar Network browser cannot find other computers on the local network, or LAN. (On the other hand, the Go…Connect to Server method seems always to work). The following technique is one reliable way of fixing the Sidebar browser problem, and assumes that you have an Ethernet LAN plus dial-up modem:
On the "gateway" computer's Network PrefPane, choose Show…Built in Ethernet, then click its TCP/IP tab and configure iPv4… manually. Type in an IP address of 10.0.1.x and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, all other fields blank.
Then repeat this for all the "downstream" computers, except that you configure iPv4…using DHCP. The network will automatically fill in the other fields (IP address, subnet mask, router) after a few seconds.
The Sidebar browsers on the "downstream" computers will now find the IP address of the "gateway" computer'" (but not its Rendezvous name} and the Sidebar browser on the "gateway" computer will now find the Rendezvous names of the "downstream" computers (but not their IP addresses)
Apple's <<docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106919>> suggests that both "gateway" and "downstream" machines be configured manually, but that does not work in my experience. David Pogue's Bible on Panther recommends that all computers be configured using DHCP, again this does not work consistently."

  • Force network browser to default to AFP rather than SMB?

    Hi,
I'm having an intermittent problem with the network browser. When I open it, I see a list of all the computers on my network (Mac and PC). But sometimes when I connect to other macs on the network, the protocol defaults to SMB.
What I want to happen is this:
    - When I connect to a PC, I want to use Samba
    - When I connect to another Mac, I want to use AFP
The network browser just shows a list of aliases to all the computers on the network and presumably picks the appropriate protocol itself when you try to connect to one of them. The trouble is, sometimes I'll be trying to connect to another Mac and it will ask me to authenticate for SMB. At first I thought the problem was confined only to my mac, but some of the others on the network are experiencing the same thing.
So really, I want the Network browser to connect using AFP by default and if a particular computer doesn't use AFP, then use Samba instead. Right now, I am connecting manually using command K in Finder and typing in the IP address - which is a bit of a pain.
Any help you guys could offer would be very much appreciated
    All the best
    Iain

Except occasionally when the status of computers on the network change and the browser hasn't updated, you usually can expect a reliable pattern for how to connect to other computers.
The Network browser in a Finder window will group computers according to Windows workgroups, Appletalk zones and AFP Bonjour. If all AppleTalk advertisements are in the default zone, they get grouped with Bonjour AFP advertisements in the "My Network" category. Selecting a computer in "My Network" should always result in an AFP-over-TCP/IP connection (from Tiger).
Alternately, to force the issue, you can use the "Go to server..." command (CMD-K) and enter the address of the computer. If you prefix the address with "smb://" it will use SMB, if you prefix it with "afp://" it will use AFP. With no prefix, it will use AFP (it will not fail-over to SMB or any other protocol).
This is all explained in Finder help and in various documents on Apple's support site.

  • Domain over IP routed subnets - getting network browsing to work?

Hi, I have a small domain spanned across two different subnets. Each subnet has its own domain controller, and the two networks are linked via IP routing.
Network connectivity between the two subnets is good - replication between the two DCs is happening smoothly, and every workstation can access every other workstation regardless of which subnet they're on.
The problem is that network browsing doesn't seem to work across the subnets. If a user knows the name of the machine they're connecting to, then they can enter that name into Explorer's address bar and it will connect fine. But when they go to "Network"
or "My Network Places", only the machines from their own subnet appear there. When a user goes to "My Network Places" (or just "Network" in Win7's Explorer) then I would like them to see all the machines on both subnets, not just their own subnet.
Both DCs are running Server 2008 R2. What do I need to do to get network/computer browsing to work across the two subnets?

    Hi,
    Thank you for the post.
    Is WINS really necessary?
Yes. NetBIOS resolution across subnets depend on WINS server.
    Summary of WINS Benefits
WINS enables the Computer Browser service to collect and distribute browse lists across IP routers.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc784180(WS.10).aspx
In a multiple subnet environment, make sure WINS is configured properly so that you have the proper NetBIOS name resolution.

  • Network browser crashing...

I just got a new Macbook for my girlfriend, who is trying to use it to connect to a Windows network at work. Following the instructions here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1164.html
However, every time she opens the network browser from the finder, it freezes. She says that the mouse will still move, but everything else locks up and she has to restart the computer. She's left it for more than 5 minutes and it hasn't connected, found computers, or un-frozen itself.
She's at a small office, so the network that she's trying to connect to is not large. If she boots the machine into Win XP, she can connect to the file servers and the networked printer without a problem.
Any ideas what's going on here or how I can try to help her troubleshoot the problem?

I'm having a similar problem. I upgraded from 10.3 to 10.4 this weekend and when I came into work today I could not connect to my office server thru Finder. I could see the server but when I double clicked on it I got the wheel of death and had to relaunch Finder. This is trying to connect to a Red Hat Linux server and again...it could on Friday using 10.3
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
