Network card stops functioning

After a lightning storm the network card stop functioning.
The windows hardware manager re-installed it after restarting the system but it is not functioning properly.
It does connect to the network but it doesn't send or receive any data packets.
The MAC address has been changed by the windows hardware manager and the card's orange light is constantly on, even if I remove the network cable.

Hi
> MAC address has been changed by the windows hardware manager
This is improbable because in my knowledge the MAC address is fix and cannot be changed.
You said something about lightning storm for me this is a reason why the LAN card does not work correctly.
Maybe there is short circuit on the motherboard
I dont think this could be fixed in the easy way therefore you should contact an technician who could check the notebook to resolve the LAN card problem

  • Network temporarily stop functioning

My PC is running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Recently, my windows has network problem. Everytime after I log in, the network has no problem, I can go online checking my email, etc. After 30 minutes or longer, I can go nowhere in Internet Explorer (version
    11) as the Internet is completely stopped. I also installed google chrome in windows and it has the same problem. I am sure the Internet connection is no problem as another computer can go online. I also found that the internal connection of my PC to wifi
router is not disconnected, and the IP address is as same as it initiated. Everytime this problem occurs, I have to close all opened Internet Explorer and then re-open it, most of time this problem can be resolved. I suspected this problem created
by my wifi adaptor, so I bought a new one but windows still gives me the same problem. Would anyone help me resolve this issue? Thank you very much!

    Hi,
Have you tried to reinstall Wireless adapter driver for test? Please access to Device Manager  and open WIFI adapter driver properties and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option.
In addition, if this problem occures agagin, please try to use command below to reset IP for test:
Open CMD with Admin, then type netsh int ip reset  press Enter.
If problem persists, try to reset winsock for test.
Open CMD with Admin, then type netsh winsock reset press Enter.

  • Ethernet Card Stopped Working (BCM5785M)

My ethernet card stopped functioning about a week ago, at the time I thought my cable had died and did not think to much of it. Then I checked the cable in my desktop computer and it worked fine and was able to connect to my router as well as the interent. To the best of my recolection I did not install any new software that may have cuased the problem, just standard pacman package updates. I ran throught the Networking wiki to try and see if I could find anything wrong but was not able to solve the problem. The odd thing is when I try and connect to my router I obtain and IP address of 192.168.1.128 which to my recolection was a fall back address when an error occurs. I normally will run my laptop on my ethernet card just becuase of shotty wireless router suppled by my ISP. I am able to use my wireless card without problems, other then the substandard performace of the wireless router, so my networking appears to be generally functioning on the computer.

Well thanks for the compliment. this is my first post here but not my first go with linux. I started using linux back when Red Hat was still avalaible under the GNU as a free distro. Then to Fedora in beta, Gentoo. Ubuntu, and now Arch. I have been running arch for about two years and just have not needed to post do to generally finding my answers in the wiki or on a forum post either here or else linuxquestions as well. I guess that leads me to say that this distro is one of the most well documented ones I have ever used. Gentoo would be the only other who comes close but that is needed just with the complexity involved in the install.

I will say though that everything looks perfectly in order.  The DHCPCD is good, and it shows that you are connected.  I assume you recognize an error as a browser does not connect.  But have your tried other web-tools to see if they can connect?  A good starting point would be ping.  Try each of the following:
    ping -c 3 google.com
    ping -c 3 8.8.8.8

I did try a ping on the google site both with the name server as well as the ip while going through the network wiki. I also tried a ping to the router it self without success.

I guess one thing I did forget to mention is that the LEDs on the ethernet card seem to be functioning as well when I plug the cable in.
    EDIT:
    Interesting Update.
I was able to connect to my router as well as the internet by switching over to a static IP. I made sure to set it as high as possible but it did work. I was browsing around and saw another post on the forums and someone suggested to switch to static IP to help troubleshoot the problem.

  • By creating wireless network with Airport Express, original wireless network stops functioning

I want to use the Airport Express to create a second wireless network downstairs. Upstairs I already have a wireless modem/router (Draytek 2850). The signal downstairs however is to weak. When I create the wireless network on the Airport Express, this works perfectly. However after the creation, the wireless part of the Draytek modem/router stops functioning. The wired part keeps working, but when I connect to the wireless part I access anything. Why is that?
The Express is set to Bridge modus and under TCP/IP I've selected that the IPV4 configurations has to go via DHCP.

I set the Network Name the same as the SSID, security type on the router is Mixed(WPA/WPA2)/PSK, which on the AX is WPA/WPA2 - personal I guess. The password is the same as the DrayTek.
Yes, WPA/WPA2 Personal on the AX is the same as the Draytek's wireless security option.
The radio channel of the Draytek router is 6, the channel of the AX is 11. Do I miss anything here?
No, it looks like you have all of the right settings as far as I can tell ... and you already stated that the AX is in bridge mode, i.e., Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode) ... correct?
If so, I would recommend performing a complete power recycle of your networking components, as follows:
Power-down the DrayTek, and AX. Order is not critical.
Power-up the DrayTek; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it to stablize.
Before powering-up the AX, verify that you can gain Internet access via a wireless connection to the DrayTek. If so, continue.
Power-up (plug-in) the AX; wait at least 5-10 minutes to allow it to stablize. It should have a steady green status light. If not, use the AirPort Utility to determine the reasons why it doesn't from the Status page of the Utility.

  • Teamed network cards for domain controllers?

can someone help me to resolve a debate we have: my colleage states that domain controllers (in our case Win2003SP2) should "not" have their network cards teamed for high availability (via HP's NIC teaming software).? I've not heard of this and cannot Bing/Google anything like this. I'm under the impression that a domain controller "should" have it's gigabit NICs teamed to make sure that directory services are highly available.
any information on this would be great. thanks...Peter A. Berger Jr.

    Fault Tolerance and Network Teaming
Anyone who has called Microsoft for help with a networking problem has likely heard the question: "Are you using network teaming?" I have often heard this referred to by Microsoft's customers as a "quick out" or an excuse that Microsoft was looking to pass the responsibility on to someone else. As someone that has been on both ends of the phone, and at the highest escalation point within Microsoft's Network queues I can tell you that it is a question born of wisdom and tempered with experience. While working the phones at Microsoft, supporting the largest and most critical systems in the US it was rare to ever get a call about the same problem more than once. Even more rare was for everyone on our group to get the same calls, and have the same experiences. I recall it happening when we fought the blaster worm, and when Microsoft's "Scalable Networking Pack" was released with 2003 SP2. These were bad, but a few months went by and except for a few straggles the phone calls stopped, the world got wise to the issue and the problem was resolved. I was amazed though to experience 1-3 calls a week with network issues CAUSED by network teaming. I could not help but be blown away by the irony of a program meant to avoid network failure so often causing it. I talked to colleagues, (of which I have found no better single source in the industry than at Microsoft), and found that even the old timers having more than 15 years with the company had the same stories of problems caused by networking teaming as we are constantly experiencing today. I am amazed that an industry as wise and agile as the computer industry has been (and is), has stuck with such a poor technology. I always asked my customers as the called with problems, usually critical ones, "What is teaming these network cards getting you". Almost unanimously the answer would come fault tolerance, to which I would reply rhetorically "How often do you NICs or Switches fail and how often has teaming caused network failure?" In my opinion, it is unforgivable for an application to constantly cause the problem that it is written to avoid. It should cause pause and reflection as to whether the technology is well suited for its function, whether it is just written poorly or if all of its implementations have similar problems. Technology today is beyond network teaming. There are far better methods of providing fault tolerance with manual and automatic failover. Most application writers have taken into consideration fault tolerance at the service level superseding anything that network teaming offers, so that network teaming should be a dead technology, because it is killing us.
Finally, if you are considering using network teaming, or have had reason to reconsider its use, maybe these questions will help your assessment:
What is my goal with using network teaming?
Can I gain Availability through use of a more capable NIC card?
How often have my NIC cards failed?
When NIC cards have failed were they the only failure, or was it in conjunction with a Motherboard or other failure causing the service to be unavailable?
What are my needs for uptime for these services?
Would a manual failover (the simplest of options) be viable for this service?
What options for automatic failover do I have (since most applications can have multiple providers through configuration)?
One other note to add. While working on the phones at Microsoft, and later as a consultant to large and federal organizations, I found one thing that seemed to be true most of the time. When a problem occurred, it was rarely the OS itself, but something unnatural to its processes. Simplicity and minimalism is really one of the keys to a healthy server and environment. Often it is necessary to introduce other applications and services, but I do not think near as often as we do.
Note: MSFT does not support network teaming, because they do not own the software that provides it. In certain instances though, like with OCS, they flat out will not support OCS if teaming is enabled on the server.
Note2: I realize my comments above are very general, and so I want to apply these to this exact question. When I consider AD and how to make it fault tolerant, I cannot help but realize that the protocols, clients and services that make up Directory Services, are beautifully fault tolerant. In most cases, the loss of any one DC would not greatly affect the user's ability to authenticate to a computer or service within the domain. Even more, Directory services is inherently so fault tolerant that it can still function with the loss of a major part of the servers that make it up.
Don't forget to give credit where credit is due, vote this as helpful if it helped you.

  • How to web filtering via two network cards?

I have Installed Server 2008 and two network cards
on my pc. One LAN card for clients access and one for internet router. I need to share internet connection to my client computers with
web filtering. So how to do that? I need to block some sites to client access.

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to use the WS 2008 to share Internet connection and provide web filtering function for internal clients.
Internal clients –(NIC1) WS 2008(NIC2) – Internet router – Internet network
Manually assign IP address, default gateway, DNS server, etc. on NIC2. Manually assign IP address, DNS server, etc. on NIC1.
Install Network Policy and Access Services – Routing and Remote Access Services. Detailed steps reference:
Install and Enable the Routing and Remote Access Service
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc770798(v=ws.10).aspx
Then open Routing and Remote Access and start configuration. Enable NAT on NIC2 to transfer IP address. Detailed steps reference:
    Enable and Configure NAT
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd469812.aspx
Windows Server itself does not support web-based filter, third-party tools with application-layer firewall might be needed to realize this function. Configure WS as a router, it supports IP packet filtering, which specifies which type of traffic is allowed
into and out of the router. Reference:

  • Where in migration process does old server stop functioning as primary server?

I am migrating from a SBS 2003 box to a new WS 2012 R2 Essentials box - following the instructions from
"Migrate from Previous Versions to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials or Windows Server Essentials Experience".   What I need to know is where in the process does
the old server stop functioning as a server for my network.   What I mean by this is when in the migration process (when I add the new server as a replicate DC?  not until I demote the old server?) will any programs/databases on the old server no
longer be available to client computers?
    Thanks for any insight.

Yeah, we need to agree on what is meant by "the server". In Windows, Server means many different things. Each time you move, a role or feature from the "old" to the "new" the old server ceases to function as "the server"
for that role or feature. The basic functions of a Windows DC include Active Directory, 5 FSMO roles, file and print services, and application services to name just a few.
So the answer to your question is more to do with what you mean by "server".  In particular, for the application role, you must move the app to the new server by whatever means the developer recommends.  At that point, regardless of whatever
else is going on the old server is out of the picture for that application.

  • Drivers for network card Extreme 802.11 n

I´m running Mac OS X and windows vista on bootcamp.
Mac OS X is functional, ofcourse, but Vista doesn't recognise the network card.
I need Windows drivers for this.
    Where can I find this?

I know you may have already tried this but have you already installed the boot camp drivers on vista? They can be found on the Leopard install disc. The drivers for all hardware should be on that.

Offline: HP NC373T PCIe Multifunction Gig Server Adapter
    Software:
Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise (Very last updates from MS)
Oracle RAC 11.2.0.2.0 (Clusterware, DB) – 2 nodes
    Environment:
AD network. Everything is MS based.
    Problem description:
During RAC installation, company had only one network card (server network card, per node). Installation was successfully finished. RAC was/is in production. Has some problems, but noting for alarm.
This days, we get other network cards. (purpose: network redundancy).
    RAC shutdown was clean.
Network card inserted to nodes by OS Admin.
    Nodes was started up... and...
OS Admin disabled network card immediately after logon screen was available... but to late...
Windows changed network card order!!! PublicLAN was not at the first place when Cluster started (Network and sharing center -> change adapter settings -> Advanced (from menu) -> Advanced Settings -> Adapters and Bindings)!!! (I found in logs that MAC address changed at this point!)
Cluster started hardware reconfiguration... and... we could not stop CW till starting up finished... ! After stopping CW again, we set PublicLan at first place, and every win setting was as at the moment of installation.
Cluster was started again, DB, OEM too...
Everything is working. Client can connect to DB, applications work well... but...
Damage is done... now we have totally new IP situation inside... changes are saved to the DNS, too!!!
Before inserting network card IP settings (nslookup from any client) :
    rac1 192.168.217.60
    rac1-vip 192.168.217.62
    rac2 192.168.217.61
    rac2-vip 192.168.217.63
    rac-scan 192.168.217.64
    192.168.217.65
    192.168.217.66
After this incident (nslookup from any client):
    rac1 192.168.217.60
    192.168.217.62
    192.168.217.64
    192.168.217.66
    rac2 192.168.217.61
    192.168.217.63
    192.168.217.65
    192.168.217.66
VIP and SCAN IP address are the same as before...
nslookup show as that rac1,rac2,rac-scan change IP addresses in round-robin scenario!!!
We stopped RAC couple of time and OS Admin cleared DNS records (both zone)... but every start of cluster make changes again in DNS.
    Other "side-effects":
Some cluster commands, invoked from CMD, fire errors (lsnodes, cluvfy comp nodecon -n rac1,rac2).
Configuration files seem to be correct (listeners, scan, scan_listeners, etc). srvctl and crsctl command are working without errors. oifcfg too.
Logs are full of errors (like: ASM could not be reached... no listener)
    Listener(s) stop working sometime...
Relocation of resource are not possible.
Well, I mentioned the most important things... other alerts and errors in logs are present, but everything is connected with this issue, I think...
As I said: RAC working. Clusterware, DB, OEM, connections, applications, backup... everything look good... but we have a problem!!!
Any ideas, any suggestion, any link, any advice, anything are welcome!
    Thanks!
    PS.
Metalink haven't any document about this... I've found a lot of examples for changing IP's, interfaces, interconnection... but noting about fixing problem!

I'm having the same issue. My desktop pc keeps dropping the connection to my network (airport extreme router) while the rest of my devices (macbook pro, xbox, mac mini) still stay connected. The pc never had this issue prior to installing Windows 7 so im guessing there must be something with the Windows 7 OS.

  • I did something to my network card...

I've got a Toshiba Satellite S173 with Arch running wonderfully.  I attempted to set up my Linksys 802.11G PCMCIA card, and in the process did something with my ethernet card.  When I go to Network Tools, the only option is loopback (lo).  So I ran:
    hwdetect --show -net
    And got
    NET : e100 eepro100 mii
Any ideas how I can get my eth0 (LAN) back? Neither wireless nor wired is currently working.
    EDIT
UDEV doesn't appear to be loading the card, so I added e100 and eepro100 to MODULES in /etc/rc.conf.  Still doesn't work.

Ok, so I got LAN (eth0) back on hwdetect at least.  I also managed to get my wireless card in there too:
    NET : e100 eepro100 mii ieee80211 ieee80211_crypt ieee80211softmac bcm43xx
I went back through the Configure Network article in the Wiki (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Network) and restarted the network with the following errors:
    /etc/rc.d/network restart
    :: Stopping Network [DONE]
    :: Starting Network [BUSY]
err, =R ioctl SIOCGIFHWADDR: No such device
err, =R ioctl SIOCGIFHWADDR: No such device
    [FAIL]
    # depmod -a
    # ls /lib/modules/
    2.6.25-ARCH

  • Solaris9 x86 problem with network cards, ACPI, IRQs

    Hello!
For the last two days I've been trying to solve the problem of Solaris9 x86 not being able to use my network card. I have tried with 3c905CX-TX-M, RealTek 8139 and Realtek 8029 and none of them works. The problem is the following:
Everything is properly configured, networking etc., but the cards can only send and cannot receive packets. When trying to ping, the packets leave the NIC but none of the reponses are detected by NIC. When I check with 'kstat elxl' I can see that 'intr' is zero, and out_packets is increasing as it's sending packets.
From the discussion forum I can see that this same problem has been known for several years. One of the conclusions is that Solaris x86 sucks at dealing with IRQ setup and that the best thing is to disable ACPI and 'PnP OS' option in BIOS. However, I've tried all releases of AMI bios and none them has neither of those options. I have played with various priority levels in BIOS but all that has accomplished is that the card, when first started, captures a few interrupts/packets but then stops again. This is usually just enough to finish the ARP exchange (arp -a shows the remote host).
And of course, all the cards work just fine in WindowsXP and Linux. And all the cards work nice in another PC which runs the same Solaris 9 x86.
My motherboard is Gigabyte 7VTXE. (The other one in which it works is ASUS P2B-DS).
    I would really appreciate help!

I had almost identical problem today on an HP Kayak - which happened to be dual CPU one. The fix
    set pcplusmp:apic_forceload = -1
in /etc/system worked for me. The only drawback is that it also leaves the machine single CPU. AFAIK this (downloadable) S9x86 kit is licensed only for one CPU anyway, so I wonder if something has been fixed in the code to make sure it is not run on multi-CPU systems. Before the fix, mpstat showed thousands of interrupts on CPU0, both CPUs were constantly busy at about 70% and there was no network connection on a number of cards I tried (3Com 90x - elxl, Intel iprb, another one with Realtek 8139 was never recognized, so I did not bother too much to find if there is a fix for this); pinging out resulted in the hub port light blinking, nothing comes back.
Anyway, the fix is good enough to test s9 for now; everything else seemed to be OK. If it may be of some use for somebody, don't go into the disk option of the Solaris Management Console; the machine in question had Windows 2003 server (RC2) installed before Solaris9, the disk tool decided that there was no label on the disk and asked to write it on; I clicked the 'cancel' button, but the partition table was irreversibly damaged, so I had to start from installing W2k3. My guess is that tool has been tested only with Sparc, so there is no issue with BIOS level partitioning there. BTW, system info of the SMC insists that the CPUs are Sparcs...

  • How to deauth. Photoshop CS3 on computer w/ dead network card?

    Hi,
The network card on my ~4-6 years old Windows XP PC at work died and the tech guy said the network card is part of the motherboard so it would make more sense to just get a new machine instead of fixing the existing machine.  Since I will be getting a new machine, I was wondering how to deauthorize the Photoshop CS3 that is currently on the broken computer since I can't get on the network.  I have the Photoshop CS3 install disk and codes and will need to reinstall Photoshop on the new machine once it arrives.  Thank you.

    and the tech guy said
I agree with Marian - any halfway savvy network admin usually has a cheap replacement card in reserve or an USB to Ethernet adaptor that just need to be plugged in. Even without the correct driver, they normally run as a "Generic ethernet card on adress XX:XX:XX:XX", they may just be locked into the slowest of modes. That aside, calling is of course the next best alternative. It's really no big deal, as long as your current install is still functioning and you are able to produce the verification code.

  • Replacement wired network card and driver for G4/OSX 10.3.9???

Does anyone know of a wired network card that will work in a Mac (with or without a driver) when the one on the mother board is not longer functioning? It seems that my built-in Ethernet card was fried in a recent electrical storm and I'm looking for a replacement so I can connect to the internet again. My cable internet modem and cables were replaced after the storm and have been determined to be in working order.
No theories, please -- I'm looking for a proven solution.

    Hi
I found the Kingston KNE100TX (NB not KNE110TX) to be satisfactory in my B&W G3.
Drivers required and available from Kingston up to OS9. No drivers required for OSX. See
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/OSX/osx_networkcards.html#kingston
(There are other reports in this linked page but my experience is with the KNE100TX)
    Best wishes
