Network created 1904?

I recently reinstalled my OS from DVD (10.4) then downloaded the comprehensive updater to 10.4.8. Networking has been a problem since. If I use the "Go" menu in the Finder and select "Network", a window opens then immediately disappears. If I instead select "Computer", in the list view, Network shows a modification date of 1 January 1904!
I have a NAS that I can no longer connect to. Only if I select computer/network will it work sometimes. And went it works, the NAS disk also shows a modification date of 1 January 1904.
How can I fix this?

Hi Bob,
The following article by Apple may solve at least part of your problem:
Mac OS X 10.4.2: Network view doesn't show network shares or won't open at all
I guess the problem is that the Finder starts up too early before the netowrk becomes fully functioning. So (1) killing the Finder and restart it, or (2) logout and login back, also seem to solve the problem (temporally). Of course the problem will appear again after reboot, unless you disable the automatic login.

  • Wifi network created with a Comcast Modem/wifi hub

Can airport express be used to extend a wifi network created with a Comcast Modem/wifi hub?

Apple tells us that the AirPort Express will only "extend" a wireless network...using wireless only...if it is used with another Apple router.
So, it would be extremely unlikely that this would work with your Comcast modem/router.

  • Two AEpress 2013 extending a wireless network created in a AExtreme

I'm trying to extend wirelessly a network created in my AirPort Extreme 2013, using a couple of AExpress.
The configurations are perfects, I can see everything correctly from Airport Utility, but only one of the two AExpress is accepting clients connections.
So I have the AirPort Extreme with 6 clients connected (Apple TV, iPad, etc), the 1st AExpress with 4 clients connected (Mac, iPad,, etc), and the 2nd AExpress with no clients connected (also when I try to connect to the same SSID from a clients that is located just some feet behind the 2nd AExpress).
How it's possible? How can really extend the coverage range of my network? (Both 2.4 and 5 Ghz?).
If only the 1st AExpress is sufficient, why in the room where is located the 2nd one I loose the connection if the signal of the 1st one is too poor and the device doesn't try to connect to the 2nd and nearest?????

If your "old" AirPort Extreme is actually a dome-shaped 802.11g model, then the only option to extend the new 5th generation Extreme is with a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). This type of extended network has two major drawbacks: 1) It can only operate in the 802.11g Radio Mode, and 2) For every base station added the overall bandwidth is cut in half. For two base stations, running in 802.11g, that would be 54 Mbps / 2 = 25-27 Mbps.
If; however, your "old" AirPort is actually a 1st or 2nd generation 802.11n model, then you can configure them for an extended network without the bandwidth penalties of a WDS.

  • How do I delete a duplicate wireless network created on my Time Capsule

I was looking to extend my wi-fi network using an AirPort express, with an existing Time Capsule as the base.  Ran into several issues.  Reset my TC, created "new" network with the same name I used before, as I thought the reset would delete the old one.  Now I do not have an extended network, but duplicate wi-fi netwroks configured differently.  Looking to start over by deleting the old networks, establishing a new extended network using the TC and AirPort Express. Any guidance would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Issue resolved.  I reset both devices and started over.  Previous networks are gone, new network established and extended with AirPort Express.

  • Trying to use Airport Express to extend network created by Actiontec M1424WR (FiOS)

I would like to use two Airport Expresses to extend my home network which is created with my Actiontec M1424WR.  My ISP is Verizon FiOS.  I previously had TimeWarner and used one of my Expresses to create the WiFi and the second Express to extend it.  Now that I have a modem/router provided by Verizon, I'd like to utilize both Airports as extenders.  I have a two story house and the signal is "fair" upstairs.  I would like to use my Roku player to access my home library via Plex. My problem(s):
I used a hard reset to restore my Expresses to the default settings because my Airport Utility could not find them and my old network is not active anymore.  After the reset I was able to find them but I kept getting an "unexpected error occurred try again later" message.  After this message my Macbook OS X 10.8.5 could not connect to the internet anymore.  I had to go to System Preferences ---> Network ---> Assist Me.. ---> Assistant ---> and then found my network and reconnected.  So my Macbook is connected again but my Airport Expresses sit unused..
    My Network:
    Modem/Router ->     1. PC
                                   2. PC #2
                                   3. Xbox
                                   4. D-link 5 port gigabit switch -> a. Directv  b. xbox #2  c. xbox #3   d. THIS IS WHERE I WANT MY AIRPORT
I would like one Airport, connected via ethernet and towards the back of the house, extending my network and the other, connected via wifi and upstairs, also extending my network.
If anyone has time on their hands to help me with my problem I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thank you,
    Mike

I followed Kappy's advice and connected one AEX to my modem/router using a 50ft ethernet cable, creating a new network.   I connect my second AEX wirelessly to the first, extending the network.  The first AEX was placed towards the back of the house and the 2nd AEX was placed upstairs.  I was able to stream netflix on two devices upstairs while streaming a movie using plex from one pc downstairs to a roku player upstairs without any buffering at all.  All three were in HD and my brother was playing multiplayer on his xbox (wired).  It works! Thanks Kappy!

  • New network created every time I connect

    Hi,
I have an E51 connected to Windows 7 Home Premium using Ovi Suite 2.2.0.241. Every time I connect to the Internet, a new network is created in Windows (called "Nokia E51 USB Modem (Nokia Ovi Suite)  2", 3, 4, etc.) and I'm asked whether it's a Home, Work, or Public network.
Why isn't the same network reused? I didn't have this problem with PC Suite.
    Glen.

After connecting first time (Which you have done) you can always click the connection manager in windows taskbar, and dial connection from there, (just don't dial via Ovi suite, it won't create new connection)

  • Why won't my Airport Expr extend the network created by my Airport Extreme?

I have a 802.11n Airport Express that creates a great, solid wireless network in my house. The signal is pretty weak in the basement though so I thought I'd use an old 802.11g Airport Express to extend.
However in the Airport Utility > Wireless settings for the Express, no "Extend a Wireless Network" option exists.
I then tried setting up a WDS network and made the Extreme the WDS main and entered in the mac address of the Express as a WDS remote, but once the Extreme restarts is shows a WDS error that states "This Apple wireless device is set up as part of a WDS network but no other wireless devices were found."
Am I doing something wrong? Do I need a 802.11n Express to play nice with the 802.11n Extreme?

However in the Airport Utility > Wireless settings for the Express, no "Extend a Wireless Network" option exists.
In order to extend the 802.11n wireless network of your 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) you will need another AXn. You can extend the wireless range of the AXn with the older 802.11g AirPort Express base Station (AX) but only for 802.11g. This is why your are not finding the extend option in the AirPort Utility for the AX ... and why you must configure the two for a WDS.
I then tried setting up a WDS network and made the Extreme the WDS main and entered in the mac address of the Express as a WDS remote, but once the Extreme restarts is shows a WDS error that states "This Apple wireless device is set up as part of a WDS network but no other wireless devices were found."
Most likely, the problem is that the distance between the two AirPorts is either too great or there is too much Wi-Fi interference between them to establish the WDS. I suggest that you first try configuring the WDS with the AX in near proximity of the AXn to verify that you can successfully create the WDS. Once verified move the AX to the desired location.

  • Modify/delete a wifi network created in Time Capsule.

Hello, I created some wifi networks with Time Capsule. Now I want to eliminate some of them in order to keep only 2 or 3 "on air"; how can I do it? My Airport Utility is updated; v. 6.3.2

You cannot create multiple wifi networks.. you can create 2.. one for 2.4ghz and one for 5ghz. (Guest network I guess is also possible).. once you change the name of the network the previous ones no longer exist.
If you have a long list of wireless names in your computer.. delete them from your computer. They are simply history and no longer current.
Tesserax has info for deleting all the old names that are stored on your computer to fix connection after wake from sleep issues.

  • Adhoc network created in windows 8.1 gets listed as an infrastructure network

    Hi All,
I have created a adhoc network on a windows 8.1 (home ) tab following the below steps ,
    netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow
netsh wlan set hostednetwork ssid=tests key=123456789
    netsh wlan start hostednetwork
hosted network started but to my surprise it got listed in all the other windows 8.1 tabs (which was not supposed to be listed),
I ran netsh wlan show networks command only to see that the new adhoc network <tests> is being detected by all other tabs as Infrastructure network
Did I miss anything while creating the network ? cuz.. I was expecting it to be listed as "adhoc" network ?
Other part of the deal is when I try to connect another 8.1 tab (home edition) by following the below steps
Click Open Network and Sharing Center > Manage Wireless Networks >
    Add.
Click "Manually create a network profile". (This may look silly but we really are going to create an infrastructure network now.)
Enter the network name (SSID), security type, encryption type (if any) and the key that you noted in step 1.
Uncheck both checkboxes ("Start this connection automatically" and "Connect even if the network is not broadcasting".) [Note that you cannot have the connection start automatically. If you try to have it checked, step 10 will fail. A
different way to start it automatically during system boot is described below.]
Click Next > Close. Your connection must appear in the list with the icon suggesting infrastructure (two big screens connected to a tube). Don't worry about it.
Click Start, type in "cmd" in the search box, press Enter.
In the Command Prompt, type in "netsh wlan set profileparameter name=NetworkName
ConnectionType=IBSS", exactly as shown, without quotes, except you must substitute
NetworkName with the SSID (network name) of your ad-hoc network
connection fails (if I change the connection type back to ESS , it gets successfully connected
Why is this ? I am struggling with this from yesterday..

    Hi,
According to your description, it seems that your all Windows 8.1 computers connect to network via normal wireless network.
Did you have wireless router for them?
Please delete this adhoc, then check if these computer could connect to network.
If no, follow below guide to create and connect to adhoc :

  • ATV 2 won't detect network created on iMac

    Hi,
I have an ATV 2, which detects the wi-fi network just fine. However, when I create a network on the iMac (which is connected to the internet through wi-fi, not ethernet), the network just doesn't show up in the list of networks. Even when I type it out in the search box it doesn't detect. I am creating a basic network on the iMac (Channel 11, without a password). Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
My guess is (and that's all it is at this stage) is that you might be looking at the wrong side of the process as being the problem. Have you considered this might be network related, most network problems are interference, have you checked and/or tried another wifi channel.
You might also try restarting the Apple TV be removing ALL the cables for a few moments.

  • Internet sharing via dongle, how to set password for wifi network created?

I am using a USB dongle with my Mac book Pro to share internet through AirPort, so that i can access my mac book's wifi from my iphone. This works great, but it is an open network and I woud like to set up a password.
If anyone can point me in the direction I would be very grateful!
    Thanks

If you are using OS X's Internet Sharing feature, then you can configure wireless security on your Mac's internal AirPort Card but are limited by the OS X version that you are using. It was not until Mountain Lion that Apple provided WPA2 security. Prior to this only WEP was available.
You configure Internet Sharing via System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing. (I don't have 10.6.x on any of my Macs so this may be different for your case.) Once you configure what is shared, you can then add wireless encryption.

  • Network created with TC.......

    Dear all.
In my network I have one IMac and two windows computers. I can se the TC from the windows computers. The question is if there is a way to build up a network visibility as in windows i.e that I can se and connect to the rest of the computers in the network from my MAC.

Check out this excellent iFelix article. It was written for OS 10.4 (Tiger), but is still applies for OS 10.5 (Leopard).

  • Setting Up TC as a Router / Creating or Replacing a Network.....Confused!!

Hi, I apologise in advance because (as you will tell) I'm not too clued up on the TC but have a few questions to get it up and running as a router.....
Our current set-up is as follows: One modem/router (Netgear) providing internet connection to one desktop through an ethernet cable and two laptops through the wireless network it creates. I'm trying to bring the Time Capsule into the equation....basically looking for it to speed up or replace the existing wireless network.
From what I understand I will never be able to replace the Netgear router entirely because it is also a modem and therefore is providing the physical internet connection (telephone wire connected to it etc)...so instead what would be the best thing to do? Would that be to connect a second network through the Time Capsule and have the laptops connect to that and the desktop connect to the old Netgear modem through the ethernet cable...?
If that is the case: I realise I need to have the old router connected to the TC via ethernet cable for set-up, but once it is all set-up and the second TC wireless network created....can I then remove the ethernet connection from the router to the TC, or does it need to be permanently connected to work?
I did have a go at getting it up and running, I believe there was some sort of conflict with the IP addresses (maybe somebody can clarify?) so I think I set it up in a way which meant the Netgear router and TC were in conflict with each other by trying to distribute the same IP addresses....? May be completely wrong there though!
Hope someone can shed some light and help, would be most appreciated.
    Regards

Most of the time, just a simple slight position change can make all the difference in the signal quality ... especially if there is something impeding (Wi-Fi interference) it.
You are not limited to having the TC adjacent to the Netgear router, but you will be limited by what choices will be available. Basically the TC & Netgear will be non-WDS compatible, and thus, you will not be able to extend the Netgear by wireless with the TC. That, of course, would leave you with Ethernet. However, in addition to a longer cable, you may want to consider using Powerline adapters. These adapters take advantage of your home's electrical circuit to create a pseudo Ethernet one. That way you could place the TC in another room where there may be less Wi-Fi interference present.
If this is not a viable option, then I would suggest trying different radio channels. By default, the TC will use the "Automatic" selection. The channel can easily be changed using the AirPort Utility.
