Network device configuration for SCOM 2012 Network Resource Pool

We are planning for two management servers in a Network Resource Pool.
So(considering failover situation) to send traps to both devices do we need to configure both management servers as SNMP servers on these devices?
If yes, Then it will definitely need double traffic for sending traps to two devices, isn’t it?
What SNMP server name we should use while configuring devices?
Thanks,
Vinayak

Hi,
>So(considering failover situation) to send traps to both devices do we need to configure both management servers as SNMP servers on these devices?
Yes, you need to configure both management servers as a trap recievers.
>If yes, Then it will definitely need double traffic for sending traps to two devices, isn’t it?
That's right.

Current Scenario - Two physical sites - Two SCOM Management servers assigned to perform Network Monitoring.
Currently the proposed configuration is to have two separate Network Resource pools so that the network devices in each site is explicitly managed by the network resource pool local to that site. The question is, if one of the sites or network resource
pools becomes unavailable, how do I continue to manage all the devices by failover?
Alternatively, and I may have answered my own question here, if I create one single network resource pool and encompass both SCOM Servers in that pool with an explicit discovery rule assigned to both servers to cover all network devices, that would provide
the resiliency I need, but would the servers on each physical segment still manage the network devices local to them?
Also, I am aware that it is possible to assign an explicit rule to each server within a resource pool. In that scenario, if one of the servers in the resource pool becomes unavailable, does that mean that the network devices monitored by that server are
    no longer monitored?
Any advice on which solution to implement would be much appreciated. I understand that there are pro's and cons to all of the scenarios that I have listed. Any links to some more in-depth reading would also be appreciated.

First, to your last question, if the network device discovery server goes down, this doesn't affect monitoring at all. The devices will not be undiscovered, and monitoring will continue to happen. The discovery server is completely separate from the monitoring
resource pool. The discovery server does not even need to be a member of the monitoring resource pool at all - it could be some other management server that doesn't actually do any network monitoring.
If you are using true management server (not gateways), then I assume there are no port restrictions communicating to any of the devices in any site or subnet. This means you can simply create a resource pool containing 2 or more management servers, and
do all network monitoring from that resource pool. The resource pool manages which server is actively monitoring which device. I wish I had more information into the algorithm that calculates this under the hood, but I don't know. To address your concern,
though, the network monitoring resource pool is inherently HA - when one MS goes down, load will (or should) be transferred to other members of the pool automatically.
I hope that helps a little more than my previous response.

  • Sudoers for SCOM 2012 R2

    Hi,
The following article is for SCOM 2012/2012 SP1:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/7375.configuring-sudo-elevation-for-unix-and-linux-monitoring-with-system-center-2012-operations-manager.aspx
    The questions are:
Did the Sudoers configuration changed from SCOM 2012 SP1 to SCOM 2012 R2?
    If yes,
Where is information about sudoers for SCOM 2012 R2?
    Thanks in advance!

I've updated the wiki to indicate that the same examples apply to SP1 and to R2.   Thanks for pointing this out so we could get it fixed.

  • Maintainence Mode script for SCOM 2012

     Hi All
Currently we use PowerShell script to place servers in maintenance mode (SCOM 2007 ). While executing the script we specify a text file which contains list of agents.
Am looking for same type of script which can work for SCOM 2012. After searching I got the MM tool for placing agent or group in Maintenance. Instead I would need the script to get agents from text file. Also it should check if agent is part of
cluster and place related cluster also in MM.
Let me know , if any one can help me here.

  • Which type of SQL DB do I need for SCOM 2012?

    Hello everyone,
We would like to install a SCOM 2012 Server for reporting and alerting of our Exchange and Lync Server.
Our guys from database management asks me, what type of SQL DB do I need. "An SQL DB with 100GB" shouldn't be enough :-( I'm not very familiar with SQL.
So, which informations could be missing?
Thanks in advance and best regards
    Daniel
    Beste Grüße

    Daniel,
usually Standard Edition is enough and included in the SCOM (agent) license.
Here you find more about requirements:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn249696.aspx
    SQL specific:
Check for updates and hotfixes for Microsoft SQL Server. See
SQL Server in System Center 2012 R2.
Operations Manager does not support hosting its databases or SQL Server Reporting Services on a 32-bit edition of SQL Server.
Using a different version of SQL Server for different Operations Manager features is not supported. The same version should be used for all features.
For SQL Server collation settings, see
SQL Server in System Center 2012 R2
The SQL Server Agent service must be started, and the startup type must be set to automatic.
The db_owner role for the operational database must be a domain account. If you set the SQL Server Authentication to Mixed mode, and then try to add a local SQL Server login on the operational database, the Data Access service will not be able to start.
For information about how to resolve the issue, see
System Center Data Access Service Start Up Failure Due to SQL Configuration Change
If you plan to use the Network Monitoring features of System Center 2012 R2 Operations Manager, you should move the tempdb database to a separate disk that has multiple spindles. For more information, see
    tempdb Database.
You should have a look at the sizing calculator:

If you analyse the object discovery of Websphere, you can find the method SCOM discovers the installation
=> it searches through all registry hives (as the IBM Installer adds the settings into the user's path who's installing WebSphere) - it should look like this :
If you've installed "WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment", it won't find the installation. However, to override this, just export the registry path, modify the key, and import it (I assume this is not supported but it works..)
After it discovers the installation, it starts discovering a specific XML file in the profiles-folder of websphere.
=> It seems that this MP does not support WebSphere Clusters spread among multiple systems, that's maybe the reason why it searches only for "WebSphere Application Server". Also WebSphere 8 will not be discovered.
This is very helpful information, thank you for sharing.
As for the no cluster support, did you happen to investigate to see if there is a solution/workaround?

  • SSRS for SCOM 2012 need separate instance of SQL

    Hi All,
My customer has planned to install SCOM 2012 R2 in their environment. I designed for them as followings:
    Planned 3 MS servers namely, MS1, MS2 & MS3
The rolls planned on those MS servers as follows:
    MS1 – Management Server,
    Operation console & Web console
    MS2 – Management Server,
    Operation console & Web console
    MS3 – Management Server,
ACS, SQL Reporting services & SCOM Reporting server
Customer has their existing SQL cluster database configured. This existing SQL database is also utilized by other applications.
I am planning to keep all the SCOM databases (Operation Manager DB, Operation DW DB, Reporting DB & ACS DB) on the central location on SAN storage of the SQL cluster.
For this, I requested to customer for a new instance of SQL to install SCOM DBs & SQL Server Reporting services.
Customer raised a concern on Why would need to install the databases & SQL Server Reporting services on a separate instance.
I replied as, The new instance requested will host the databases along with the SQL Server reporting services (SSRS).
The installation of SQL server report server will integrate the security of selected SSRS instance with Operation Manager role based security. Any reports that were previously installed on this
SQL server instance might become inaccessible. No other applications that are using SQL Server Reporting Services can be installed on this instance of SQL Server.
On this, Customer says if SSRS is planning to install on the MS3 server then there would not need to create a separate instance on SQL cluster. We can go with the existing instance for installation
of SCOM databases on SQL cluster and SSRS on MS3 server.
I need your inputs on this, as can I still require the new instance of SQL on SQL cluster or can go with the existing instance for installation of SCOM databases on SQL cluster and SSRS on MS3 server.
    Kindly provide your inputs.
    Regards,
    SandeepK

Although SCOM can share a single instance running SQL Server to store data, this is not a recommended configuration. The SSRS is the same, no document says that it can be shared with others.

  • Device Configuration for Samsung Galaxy Tab?

Longtime Flex/AIR developer here, but first time developing for Android.
Want to build for Samsung Galaxy Tab. In Flash Builder Burrito, when creating a Run Configuration, there's a list of devices to target. But the Galaxy Tab isn't one of them. Which one should I use? Or do I just create one and enter the right dimensions etc? Is there any information associated with those device configurations besides the pixel dimensions and pixels per inch?

Try the nearest match in terms of resolution. Also if you design your controls with relative size (%age based or relative to a fixed initial size), it shouldn't be a problem on device. • Recommendations for SCOM 2012 -- 2012 R2 migration

Hello to all. I have a customer that has SCOM 2012 in its IT environment but uses it barely and does not have any documentation. I proposed to install a new Manament Group (MG) and "reboot" to a paralell SCOM 2012 R2 considering the
use of new features present on 2012 R2.
       Questions:
1- Does SCOM support a side by side migration strategy , like SCCM 2007 R2 --> SCCM 2012 R2 that takes its main source objects and bring them to the new separated Management Group (the SCOM 2012 R2)?
2- Considering that all regular member servers are monitored by SCOM 2012 (all have agents installed), what is the recommended way to to install SCOM 2012 R2 agents on them (multi homed deploy, deploy a new agent and it will upgrade/remove the
    already existing SCOM 2012, etc)?
3- Does SCOM allows a approach to install a SCOM 2012 R2 on already existing SCOM 2012 MG and "migrate" its objects to new server and after that decomission SCOM 2012 (the old version)?
Your inputs and references will be very welecomed.
