Network drives failure

I apparently made the serious error of buying a network drive-- and while I was able to load my iTunes files onto it, suddenly the folder disappeared and I cannot find ANY method of finding it and removing it so I can salvage my files. The drive maker simply repeats the same do this, do that, do this, do that-- even if I have just done it-- and seem to have no interest beyond having taken my money for 4tb worth of drive.
Does anyone know of a file recovery that works 10.6 to network drive?
I did buy another brand of Firewire 4tb drive, and that ia a brand I feel I can trust-- not like the first brand.

The drive is network only, supposedly was mac compatible, ready to use, and allowed a week's worth of doing things-- and then the file just vanished. The other file folder on it is still there, just the iTunes folder went away, and this happened while I was getting things loaded, so there are some unduplicated songs I need to salvage.
The whole idea of getting a 4tb raid 1 was to avoid having a loss of data, not having it all vanish.

  • How to disable smb network drive failure to connect warning

    Hey,
we have a number of users using os x machines to connect on our domain, all of them have network drives configured via connect to server option smb://etc/etc
When the user is docked into the network they login just fine, obviously if they are no on the network the drive will not connect and during login they get a pop up saying connection to server failed etc etc.
Is there a way to disable this pop up ? had a number of cases this message will pop up and cause issues with login or just fail.
I do not want to demap it , I just want the message to go away as these users are highly mobile, on off the network multiple times a day.
Or is there a better way to map this drive/server ?
    Thanks
    GV

Thanks, but why would backuping a USB drive work and not a network drive ? I don't see much difference but maybe I'm missing something.
Is there a plan to implement that feature ? I mean Apple is offering the capability of plugging external drives into the time capsule and airport extreme, so why aren't these included in the overall scheme of backing up ? Sounds weird to me.
Also, could you please point some "hack out there" cause I didn't find any.
    Thanks!

  • Network drive library location failure and Syncing problems

I transferred my iTunes library to a wireless network drive. If iTunes opens without an established wireless network connection, it returns to the default library location. I can easily change it back to the network drive, but want to avoid restoring the default location. How can I do this?
A related problem is with syncing my iPod with the new network drive iTunes library location. In short, it won't sync with the new location and asks me to Restore the iPod continuously. The only way to get the iPod to sync is when the library goes back to the default iTunes location (which I don't want because I don't have music there anymore).
    Would love some help.

+If iTunes opens without an established wireless network connection, it returns to the default library location+
That's how it works. There is no way to stop itunes from doing it. If you ever find you've opened itunes without that drive available, immediately close itunes. Use a shift-start to re-open it using the networked ITL file.
Have you tried assigning a different drive letter to the ipod? Maybe it's competing with the networked drive letter. Just go into windows device manager to change the ipod's drive letter.

  • Possible Imminent Hard Drive Failure?

First off I have an Early 2011 MacBook Pro running OSX Mountain Lion.  Avast version 7.0 is running as my anti-virus software with current definitions.  I'm a network administration student so I run 2 or 3 virtual machines simultaneously to replicate a domain environment for learning.  With that I decided I need space for all these operating systems plus my music and pics, so 10 Days ago I purchased a new Seagate 750GB HD Microcenter and upgraded to 8GB from 4GB of ram while I had the case open.  HD has worked like a champ and the computer has been faster for days until last night.  I was on Facebook and suddenly I got the spinning beach ball of death.  Giving it the mac 3 the mac version of the three-finger salute didn't help me so I went for the hard restart.  After that I got the blank grey screen.  I restarted with the option key and all I saw was my Windows Partition, but when I tried to boot to it I got a kernel panic.  So I went and got the OSX Mountain Lion thumb drive I made (didn't expect to be needing that so soon) and used disk utility. Disk Utility could not verify the disk and told me to format the disk and reinstall OSX.  Knowing that I have everything recently backed up with time machine and Winclone I went ahead and formatted and restored my time machine backup along with my Winclone backup.  (My attitude was, what were my options)
During the restoration process of OSX I had zero problems, while doing the restoration of my Windows partition with Winclone I was watching the console log and saw this.....

I'm not a beginner Mac user but I'm not an all-knowing genius of the Mac either, but I know the GUID has something to do with the file structure of the hard drive.... Either way after I performed the restoration everything seems to be back to normal. The same fast computer I had before with no glitches and disk utility has even verified my disk on several occasions now and hasn't reported any issues.
So here is my ultimate question?  What would cause this random failure in the first place if not the HD?  Is the forum's consensus that I should take the HD back anyways even though all checks are passing currently?  And, if not the HD how can I prevent this from happening again?  Let's face it, I'm a college student, I need my computer.  Luckily it died when I was going to bed and I could let it restore overnight.  Also, It's lucky for me that I didn't have class this morning and have no assignments pending that are immediately due so I can complete the windows restoration in the morning.
I'll be looking forward to everyone's insight.

    Thanks for the info.
I just bought Techtool Pro last week when I my hard drive directories got chewed up the first time. The box has a "Tiger Compatible" sticker on it so I imagine it's at least v4.0.4 on the CD. (Although I will check now)
However, I think now the problem has progressed. Now the hard drive goes into a 1-2 minute cycling routine a couple times per day even if the computer is idle. Out of nowhere it starts up and it makes this repetitious reading/writing sound. It lasts 1-2 minutes and during this time the computer is hung-up (round-rainbow animated icon) and can't do anything, just have to wait it out.
At this point I'm thinking of calling it quits and I'm just going to take the machine in while there is still a warranty on it as I'm really starting to believe it's drive failure and not a problem with software.

  • How to set up and auto-mirror a networked drive?

So here's the situation.  I currently have a MBP Retina 15 (max spec'd), and there are some design processes that still run a little slow for my liking.  Given that I spend about half my working life at a desk plugged into a monitor anyway, I figured I'd get a Mac Pro to use when I'm in the office.
What I need help with is how to:
-Set up an external networked drive so that I can open and save all my projects to the same place regardless of which machine I'm working on.  I spend 90% of my laptop working time at home on the same network.
-Have the networked drive auto-back up to another external storage device so that in case of HD failure.  Basically I want to save a file, and have it expeditiously (ideally instantly, but the sooner the better) back up to the secondary HD.
Somebody at the Apple Store suggested using a USB HD plugged into Airport Extreme, and that would work, I suppose, but
    1) I'd really prefer something plugged in to the Mac Pro to speed up the data transfer at least one one machine.
    2) There's only 1 USB port on the Airport Extreme.  So if we were to go this way, the back up mechanism would need to be built in to the drive -- some sort of double external HD that auto-mirrors.
    Any suggestions?

    Could you use textarea?
    sym.$('inputfiled').html('<textarea cols="20" rows="3"></textarea>);
actually the form I used in the file is:
    inputMessage = $('<textarea />').attr({'type':'textarea','rows':'10', 'cols': '25','value':'', 'id':'message'});

  • Rebuilding aMacBook 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, hard drive failure so rebuilding system.  Aircard will not stop self-assigning IP address.  Any ideas how to resolve successfully?

Had hard drive failure on MacBook 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, so had to rebuild the OS on new drive. Was on Lion 10.7.5 prior to failure, but had to reinstall Snow Leopard 10.6.3 since that was most recent OS on media I had.  After finally getting ethernet connection to router working, was able to get to internet and download / upgrade to 10.6.8.  I assume I can probably buy the upgrade to Mountain Lion 10.8 from there.
Problem is this, Airport will not stop self-assigning IP address for my wireless connection, and unless I can get wireless back on this laptop, doesn't make a lot of sense to continue the rebuild and reinstall of all the software that was on it prior to HD failure.  Only way to my home network and router is ethernet now.  Everything else on my network (Apple MacBook Pro laptops, iPhones, desktops, and non-Apple printers and laptops) is hooking up to router wirelessly fine.
Any ideas how to resolve successfully so that the airport will stop self-assigning and allow the router to assign the IP address?

  • One user can not map a network drive

                       Hi,
A costumer of mine is trying to map a network drive for an existing user that has always had access to the NSS6000 Network Storage Device. This still works for all other users except this one. It looks like an authentication failure. They connect thru CFIS (which means it's using the active directory).
So far i have troubleshooted the following and ran out of options half an hour ago.
I rebooted the NAS. No luck.
I made a different folder and gave the user access. And tried to connect to that. No luck. (to confirm its not related to the folder security)
I tried to map the drive on a different computer. No luck. (to confirm its not a local computer problem)
I tried to map the drive to another folder on a different server, this worked fine. (to confirm credentials are correct).
I tried to remove the user on the NSS600 and tried to update it. The user reappeared instantly in the user list on the NAS. No luck.
I fear the user table the NSS keeps is corrupted. And i can't find a way to force the NAS to recreate it based on current folder security or active directory users.
Please help, as i am in no mood to reconfigure the entire NAS.
    Kind regards,
    Tim Sars

    Hi,
How did you map the network drive? Manually via GUI? Command? GPP? If you're using one of the above solutions, then try other solutions as a alternative way to check the result.
According to your description, If Windows remains unable to reconnect mapped Network Drive at login, then I would suggest you created a batch file with net use command, use it as an logon script, this provides an alternate way to reconnect drives on
    a re-logon.
    example
    @echo off
    net use * /delete /yes
    net use x: \\server_name\shared_directory_name

  • Help with Organizer (Ver 11) after hard drive failure

I have Elements 11 and am an experienced user.  Problem is with the Organizer program.  Hard drive (Network attached drive) with 16,000+ images failed.  Actual Organizer catalog is stored on my regular computer C:\ drive.  ONLY the photos were stored on the external drive.  I replaced drive with a new drive (also external network attached).  When I run Organizer, all the thumbnails indicate the files are "offline."  When I run "reconnect files" from the menu bar, it tells me there are no missing files.  If I use the file info window (in Organizer) and click on "Location" it tells me the file location ON THE ORIGINAL DRIVE is offline.  If I go ahead and reconnect the file from that window, it does ok... BUT... when I go back to the Organizer and open that image full screen, it does NOT show the name tags of the subject when you mouse-over the displayed image. The "name" tags are still listed in the tag window, but no name on the screen.  It looks as if the catalog is somehow looking for that very specific old drive, and that the tag database can't connect to the image on the replacement drive.
What happened to the database of all the people's names that are actually shown on-screen for each image??  The catalog on C:\ is intact and untouched by the external drive failure.  How can I get Organizer to recognize all the image files on the new hard drive?  I have screen shots of all the messages, etc., if that would help.
    Thanks.....  Earl

First of all, did you backup your catalog/media files via the catalog manager ? In that case the answer is to do a restore to the new custom location.
Since you are asking for help, I presume you have no backup available.
Now, the explanation for the problem. Network drives are considered 'offline' just like CD or DVDs when there are not active. On the other hand, each of those removable storage media are identified in the catalog database with a unique internal identifier which has the letter drive, device serial number, name and type of device. I am not competent about network drives, but I am sure that pluging another network drive will show different properties. Your drive will be considered offline.
Then, when you want to reconnect, the organizer does not consider the files are missing, it waits for you to plug in the original drive.
    What solution ?
What could you do to enforce the Organizer to recognize the new drive as the old one ?
Let's suppose your files had not been on a network drive, but on an external USB drive. Then all your files would have been seen as 'missing' because the recorded paths of your media files would have been different for thedrive identifier, and reconnecting could have been a solution.
The main problem I see is that I am pretty sure that you can't tell the catalog manager how to change the identifier of the offline drive, and I can't see any easy workaround. If someone knows a way, I would be extremely interested! Would it be possible to fool the Organizer to identify the new network drive with the same parameters as the old one?
So, what I would do in your case would be to use an external sqlite database manager to look at the catalog.pse11db file and see how I could change directly the identification of the new drive.
I am pretty sure I could do that if the files had been on an external USB drive (not considered 'offline'). It's worth trying that for a network drive.
Tell me if you want to try such a solution. Otherwise, if you have 'written metadata to files', your only immediate chance is to start a new catalog and import from the new drive.

  • Unable to map master page gallery to network drive on XP Service Pack 3

I've tried to map the master page gallery to my computer as a network drive. I've tried using the Tools > Map Network Drive method as well as net use x: \server\folder\. Both methods result in failure. I am on Windows XP SP3. I used a colleague's computer
who has Windows 7. Using my username and the same methods, I was able to map the master page gallery to his computer.
Has anyone heard of an issue in not being able to map a master page gallery to a machine running XP? It's obviously not my permissions.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you could’t map the master page gallery to your computer as a network drive.

  • GPO preference not applying to map network drive?

    Hello,
Server 2008 r2 GPO preference not applying to users to map network drive? When I see errors on client pc, here is the error I found?
    Log Name: Application
    Source: Group Policy Drive Maps
    Date: 1/7/2014 1:47:33 PM
    Event ID: 4098
    Task Category: (2)
    Level: Warning
    Keywords: Classic
    User: SYSTEM
    Description:
The user 'S:' preference item in the 'GPO {C990F58F-E8B2-41BF-B6FD-E1BAC389C4F1}' Group Policy object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80070037 The specified network resource or device is no longer available.' This error was suppressed.
GPresult shows following message on client pc:
The following settings have applied to this object. Within this category, settings nearest the top of the report are the prevailing settings when resolving conflicts.
    Winning GPO Name GPO
    Result: Failure (Error Code: 0x80070037)
I also have tried using full server name in the share, IP address but no success. :(
I'm using variable %username% in share location: \\servername\share\%username%
    Any idea? Please help. Thanks

Just a control question, can you actually access the users homefolder manually from the client?
Drive maps for GP Preferences is used to map drives only. It cannot create folder on the server and that’s why we see the error “0x80070037 The specified network resource or device is no longer available.”.  If you'd like to use share location
with Variable, please ensure that these folders exist on the file server.
    Hope this helps you!

  • Looking for ideas regarding encrypting a network drive used by 2 OSX Macs

I was thinking of getting a networked HD (connected by Ethernet to my wireless router) to enable my two Macs (wife's tower running 10.3.9, my Powerbook running 10.5.8) to store each of our iPhotos, iMovies, iTunes, etc. libraries on one network drive (rather than on each Mac's HD.)
Since the Powerbook is so portable, and equipped with Airport, it would be the logical CPU to position next to our living room HDTV - using one Audio cable and one DVD-to-HDMI cable. Then, either user could log into their own account on the Powerbook and wirelessly access the networked HD to display their personal iPhoto, iMovie, etc. library contents over the TV.
But I wonder... if wife normally maintains her iPhoto library by logging into her G4 tower, maybe OSX's permissions will thwart her from accessing it when she logged into her account on the Powerbook because she would appear to be a different user.
I also wonder if It would also be wise...or even possible... to encrypt the networked drive, somehow, to add another level of security to the files, since anyone who managed to hack thru my Router might potentially be able to read all the files on the HD. The router companies lead us to believe WEP and other protocols are totally secure, but I've also read that these can be hacked by some individuals. This being a 1TB networked drive, I expect some other data might get backed up to it, too, making the security issue a bit more of a concern.
The security and encryption issues in this scenario are muddy to me....but it seems like this is could be a great way to securely consolidate both users' iPhotos and other media on one network drive, accessible from either computer with appropriate logins....or would there be some show-stopping 'gotcha'? What do you think?

instead of having to boot up both Macs, initiate file sharing, fumble to get things mounted, etc. each time ...
You can leave the desktop Mac to time out and go to sleep. and set "wake on Ethernet Administrator Access", which should allow you to wake it up and get files.
the Powerbook uses OSX 5.8 while the G4 tower is on Panther.
That does not present a problem or File Sharing, which can be made compatible across a wide \[but not infinite] range or Mac Operating Systems.
So they aren't using the same version of iPhoto...the G4 uses iPhoto6, and the Powerbook uses iPhoto 9.
Our household runs a mix of 10.4 and 10.5, having just upgraded the faster Macs to 10.5. We have our entire iPhoto library in iPhoto 8 \[iLife '08], which supports the range of Mac OS we are using, and many features including ordering prints (but not face-recognition). If you want to combine your libraries, perhaps you could drop back to iPhoto 8 and re-import the iPhoto9 stuff, and upgrade to iPhoto 8 on the G4/400. \[You CAN run 10.5.8 on a G4/400, but you have to use some hacks to install it, and it may be a little sluggish at times. Then you could simply upgrade to iPhoto 9 all around.
Encrypting an entire drive makes me really queasy. I have spent too many hours digging out after drive failures and software errors have clobbered a drive, and no matter how hard you work at recovery, at least a few files always get lost. When you encrypt an entire drive, the Operating System sees the whole drive as one big file -- and errors in that file may make that file (your entire drive) unrecoverable. A friend of mine had just such a disaster at home when a drive space enhancer called "Stacker" blew up on him.
If you put Quicken or other financial data on your home Server or shared drive, I would still not worry about it, but if it keeps you up at night, you could encrypt just the financial data file (and keep it backed up religiously).
Because I do support for schools, I have also implemented Mac OS X Server at home. With a school-like setup, ALL users files are on the Server, and any user can use any Mac, their files just "appear" when they log in. File Sharing underlies everything, but it is all done without thinking about it -- the Server just does it. But Server is a US$500 package (down from $1000) that requires a dedicated Mac and a lot of fiddling, so I do not recommend it for your situation.
One thing I do recommend, if you are going to store files on your network, is to try to upgrade/add an Ethernet Switch at Gigabit Ethernet speed, if possible. The Router does not need that speed, but Mac-to-Mac (if you go the File Sharing route) or Mac-to-Network_Drive (if you go that route) will be much more responsive. If your G4/400 does not have Gigabit Ethernet, you can get a PCI slot card for it. Or maybe upgrade it to a newer old Mac that can run 10.5.8 without hacks.

  • I have just purchased an iMAC. O/S is Lion. I just cannot access the files in my Microsoft network drive which my  macpro snow leopard has no problem. Looks like it is just the Lion O/S has the problem.  The file I needed to access are my photo files.

I have an iMAC running Lion cannot access my Microsoft Network drive.  It sees it on Finder but said connection failed.  By other Macpro Laptop which run Leopard has no problem at all. It lreads and load my photos from the RAID Drive. I am sure some asked the question before but it is new to me. That was the reason I am not upgrading my Macpro to Lion yet.  was it a bug in Lion networking area?
    Thanks for the help !

You need to move to Windows 7, because Apple is now releasing a new OS X version annually and it's playing havoc with people's hardware and software.
Windows 7 will get support until 2020, that's 8 years of software stability, however you do need to make System Restore disks, boot disk and another on a hard drive to self restore (like TimeMachine is for OS X)
Apple has no plans to change their currrent behavior as all they care about is selling new hardware with a shiny new OS X verison on it.
If you wait to move, what will happen is you'll lose that full 8 years and will have to swtich to a newer Windows sooner
Windows 7 machines are still widely avaialble, despite Windows 8 (a failure) being pushed currently.
Running three OS X operating systems on one machine is quite a chore reserved for only seasoned computer geeks, then it's only going to last X months as the next OS X version will be released, then the next a year after that.
Another method would be to get a virtual machine software (virtualbox is free) and install Windows 7 into that to ease your transitition if you cant' spring for a Windows 7 machine, preferablly a tower that will last a long time.
Here is a method to run Snow Leopard in Parallels, however it's a unapproced hack and not for the comptuer newbie.

We have no control over Apple's OS X release cycle, nor the third party developers who make their own decisions what to support.
Our only choice as users to stop using both products and seek software/hardware stability.

  • Rman Channel 2 to network drive

I have configure the channel 2 to mapped network drive. Both are on Windows 2003 platform.
    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 2;
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL 1 DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT 'D:\Rman\backup_db_%d_S_%s_P_%p_T_%t'MAXPIECESIZE 1024m;
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL 2 DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT 'Z:\backup_db_%d_S_%s_P_%p_T_%t'MAXPIECESIZE 2048m;
Channel 1 backup is ok, but there is a error given for channel 2
    channel ORA_DISK_2: starting piece 1 at 09-JUL-08
RMAN-03009: failure of backup command on ORA_DISK_2 channel at 07/09/2008 09:46:40

ORA-27040: file create error, unable to create file
    OSD-04002: unable to open file
O/S-Error: (OS 3) The system cannot find the path specified.

    Oracle doesn't support network drives.
You would need to run Oracle as domain administrator. This poses security risks.
This is why Oracle doesn't support this.

  • How can we access a file that is on a mapped network drive.

If I have a network drive that is password protected and is already mapped on a server(x.x.x.x) as R drive. And I have file called temp.txt on R:\Temp folder on the mapped network drive.
How can I access it using file: using a client application running on that server.
    Thanks.

When I use it the above way I am getting the following exception:
java.io.FileNotFoundException: \\network\share\Temp\temp.txt (Logon failure: unknown username or bad password).
From the above I can say that I need to specify the username and password.
Now my question is how do I specify the username and password in the URI?
Thanks for the help. You don't. It is required that the user account running the code already has permissions to the directory in the first place.
