Network drives in the finder window

In the sidebar of any finder window under the "Shared" area that list the volumes that my laptop can access. Can someone please explain why I can see my network drives as servers with IP address and as sharepoints with the name that I've given the drives? Example:
192.168.1.22
Bkupstarbase
These two items are the same unit. Up until recently I was also able to see my Maxtor drive the same way (as IP address and as its name, Starfleet). Now I only get Starfleet and I can not get it to mount as an IP address. For awhile I was getting lots of errors saying that the drive could not mount, and I would get "Starfleet" but not the IP address. I removed the Quickstart SW from my computer and that seems to have stopped the errors (and maybe the IP address too?). Seem I can access the unit with out problems but I'm wonder why OS10.5 is doing this new way of seeing the drives. Anyone that can help me understand, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Also, how does one get pictures into these messages? I've copied some things with grab but I can't figure out how to get them in here. Thanks

I think Finder thinks that anything in the Sidebar is mounted. A Dock icon or alias might work.

  • How do I get iCloud Drive in the Finder window?

I have just installed Yosemite on my early 2009 iMac and want to use iCloud drive.  I have been using iCloud up till now and have an iPhone 5 running iOS 8 with iCloud drive enabled and an iPad 3 also running iOS8 with iCloud drive enabled. I have upgraded my allowance to 20GB on the iMac by going to System preferences>iCloud>manage.... and upgraded my plan. I have logged on to the web version of iCloud and added a new folder. I have uploaded some files from my finder window to the new folder in the web application. However, I don't have an iCloud drive folder in Finder on my iMac. I have a Google drive and a Drop box which act like local folders, and I assume that iCloud drive would act in the same way, allowing me save or move files directly into iCloud drive without having to use a web application. Does anybody have a missing iCloud drive on their finder page or know how to install the drive?

    Hi,
Go to Finder > Then click Finder on the top left corner next to the Apple Logo > Preferences > Sidebar > Tick the iCloud Drive. And the folder will be there.
    Hope that helps
    Cheers,

  • Getting rid of network items in the finder window

For the life of me I can't find any info on this, so here goes. In my finder window on the side bar, I have a category called shared. When I expand it lists an item named All..... When I click on All.... it displays in the main icon window what appear to be network connections for two websites, rentals.com and some microsoft maps platform website. When I try to drag them to the trash it gives me a message saying they can't be deleted. How do I get rid of them?

Yes, junker thumb drives pour like rain in the market.
Which makes are working on your Air, and which arent?
Stick to Sandisk and a couple of other reliable mfg. of memory sticks

  • My user folder has disappeared from my hard drive though if I do a find for it it says it is still there. Anyone know how to restore it. I can drag a duplicate from the find window onto the hard drive but don't want two copies with one hidden.

My user folder has suddenly disappeared from my hard drive though if I do a find for it it comes up as still being there with all its data. Can drag a duplicate copy from the find window back onto the hard drive but don't want two copies there with one of them hidden. Any suggestions anyone?

    Did you update to 10.9.3?
If you did then update to iTunes 11.2.1.
That is the fix for that problem.

  • External hard drive connected to my airport extreme will no longer open, when navigating to it in Finder, the Finder window quits and reopens, cannot access hard drive, it is visible in airport utility, since the problem began I have updated firmware

External hard drive connected to my airport extreme will no longer open, when navigating to it in Finder, the Finder window quits and reopens, cannot access hard drive, it is visible in airport utility, since the problem began I have updated firmware on Extreme as well as both of my Airport Expresses. Hard drive is USB connected to Extreme.

Reboot the USB drive.. assuming it is powered.. or unplug and replug a self-powered drive.. (you should not use self-powered drives on AE before the latest model.. always use a powered hub).
Does the drive now appear in finder..
If not reboot both drive and the AE.. it should now appear.
If it doesn't work with direct connection try a powered hub.. that can help.

  • My hard drive does not appear in the Finder window

I installed a second internal hard drive inside my G5, but it never shows up in the finder window, nor anytime I try to access files from within applications (it appears on the desktop though). How can I configure my computer so that it always sees this drive and grants me access?

The reason for resetting nvram is to force the G5 to rebuild the device tree, which it seems "loath" to do without a kick start.
Swapping drives oddly enough seems to leave a profile in nvram for the old device.
Personally, booting into Open Firmware is easier, thorough, and if that was all it was, works (never liked the reboot over and over zap pram which, to reset nvram, must be done from cold boot).

  • Can't map network drive (1204) The specified network provider name is invalid, Windows 8.1 Webdrive 10.2

I have just 'upgraded' from windows 8 to 8.1.
I use Webdrive 10.2 to map a drive to a secure ftp server.
Worked fine in Windows 8, does not work now I have upgraded.
When I try to initiate the connection from Webdrive I get a really helpful message...
"Can't map network drive (1204) The specified network provider name is invalid"
I cannot see where I can downgrade back to Windows 8 from 8.1.
    Any solutions anyone?
    Thanks.

  • The finder window for an external USB hard disk suddenly started separating files by time (today, yesterday, etc.) and stopped allowing me to change column width, order, etc. Also the header bar shifted to flat white from gray.

The finder window for an external USB hard disk suddenly started separating files by time (today, yesterday, etc.) and stopped allowing me to change column width, order, etc. Also the header bar shifted to flat white from gray.
All was normal until the icon for the disk stopped showing up on the desktop when I would plug it in. I rebooted the computer, and the disk icon now shows up but this new look to the finder window started as a result. The hard disk does not have this problem when I use it on another Mac running Snow leopard. Also, two other external hard disks that I use on this computer running lion 7.4 still have the normal header bars with columns that can be reordered, etc.
I have tried looking in preferences and other places but have not seen this discussed.

Well duh - I finally figured out that somehow in the View options for the hard drive, the "arrange by" option had been changed to "by date" from "none". Not sure how that happened, I had never used the "view options" menu tem before. Changing "arrange by" back to "none" gets the gray column headers and the collapsible folder icons back.

  • I cannot view photos in my albums in the finder window

This is a repost since my original post was over a month ago and I did not reply to any of the responses to my question.
I have my photos stored on an external drive (i don't even recall how i set that up), but here is my issue. When I try to view the photos in the Finder window (or use them as attachments) my named albums all show "0 items". All photos are visible when I look through the folders organized by years, but nothing shows up in the folders/albums I have created in iPhoto. I know I was previously able to do this, but cannot figure out what is wrong.
Does anybody have any suggestions? Somebody replied in a post that there are no image files in the iPhoto albums. In that case, I'd like to know where they are. My main interest is where I go to attach files to emails and such.
    Thanks!!!

    Raphael,
Same question as before... How is your external drive currently formatted? Is it formatted as Mac OS Extended?

  • Automatically mount an ftp drive on the finder at startup?

Is there any way to automatically mount an ftp drive on the finder at startup?  I would like to use this to a centralized and controlled way for company staff to access and download files while outside the company.

thanks for the suggestion.  Not sure what you mean by network volume?
Most of the time I access the ftp using Transmit.  It will mount the disk to the finder, however only for the duration that the computer is running.  Likewise the ftp disk can be dragged to the login items, however will not open or connect following a restart.
I have tried Automator, set up a small app in the startup items, and viola, it works like a charm.  Transmit opens automatically, mounts the ftp disk and then transmit shuts down.  Great.
Now is there any way that this can be set up on a LION server, so that the ftp mounts, and then can be shared for access to clients on the company's local network?  Staff could then upload files that they would like to have available on mobile devices.

  • Multiple checkmarks in the Finder Windows menu

Here's an odd one. I've been seeing multiple check marks in the Finder's Window menu. The menu normally puts a check mark next to the front-most window. However, having more than one window checked makes no sense. More worrisome is why this is happening and what it says about the integrity of my Finder.
Does anyone have any idea why I would be seeing this and how to fix it? I haven't trashed the Finder preferences yet, but that seems the next obvious step.

Terence Devlin It was not my intention to step on your tone, Sorry for that.
    But.
    +Pathfinder is not a System Add-on. It's an application.+
That is right it's an addition to the finder with different graphics and so it's not a modification to the standard window. What I like is a basic Finder window with just added tabs.
+Sweeping generalisation there... and you've tried them all? Really?+
Yes, I do think I tried them all and I still think they all miss the simplicity and elegance of the Finder windows. But if you know a good alternative (not pathfinder) I really would like that.
+Pathfinder brings many very useful functions to the table - that's why one might consider it.+
You are right. I do totally agree on that. But I rather work with the standard Finder window/info window , etc.
+On the contrary it "do leaving the finder as it is" - it makes not a whit of a difference to the Finder, you can even run the two side by side if you want. Changes made in the filesystem with one will be instantly available in the other. Perhaps, in trying "all those system add-ons" you didn't try them very carefully.+
That is exactly my point you end up using them side by side. Two different windows with things on different places. But I think on this point you really did not try to see what I was talking about.
+Case in point. The Pathfinder window is highly customisable and all that functionality that you don't like can be hidden away.+
Yes, But did you find a way to show all the other computers in the network in the side bar like the Finder (leopard) does?

  • How to hide a network resource from the Finder sidebar?

    Hi everyone,
I'd like to hide a network drive from my Finder sidebar.
Googling around, I only found how to hide all of them, but nothing about a specific one...
Could anyone help me getting the proper Terminal commands?
    Thanks

It didn't work It seems I can't drag a network device out of the sidebar... I think I need some Terminal commands, but I'm not able to write them myself.
    Thanks anyway for your reply

Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
If searching for files in Finder doesn't return any results, try using the steps in this article to reindex the Spotlight search index of your MacBook Pro hard drive:

  • HT2311 After waiting 27 minutes while the new iTunes supposedly downloaded onto my computer, the Finder window did not appear, and the iTunes.mpkg icon didn't appear on my desktop (where downloads usually go).  What do I do?

After waiting 27 minutes while the new iTunes supposedly downloaded onto my computer, the Finder window did not appear, and the iTunes.mpkg icon didn't appear on my desktop (where downloads usually go).  I also looked for the new iTunes by clicking on my Hard Drive icon but didn't see it there either.  I only see the icon for the old iTunes.  What do I do?

The exclamation mark means that the app has lost the link to the actual file.
First step: try and make sure the iPhoto Library is working correctly:
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
