Network dropped on wired ethernet

The other day I was browsing along the internet, when suddenly, Shiira notifies me that I'm no longer connected to the internet. Sure enough, my iChat connection was dropped as well. Since then, I haven't been able to connect with wired ethernet.
The cable's fine- it's plugged into the PC I'm using right now. And since I can connect fine from here, I assume my cable modem is fine as well. I'm not using any sort of router.
I tried fiddling around with my network settings, though my knowledge in that area is extremely vague. I pretty much just did what the "Assist me!" button said. That didn't work. I always dread it when my computer tells me to contact the ISP to find out what's the matter.

Typically there's not a lot of setup needed to get a Built in Ethernet connection working.
Do you know if it's a cable or DSL connection? If DSL, do you know what the username and password might be?
One thing you could do to check is to Click on the apple in the top left corner and click on "About this Mac". Click on "More Info" and there should be an entry down the left side of the system profiler window for "Network". There's either an entry below that for "Built in Ethernet" or it'll list it when you click on "Network" itself. Basically, I'm looking to make sure the harware is still recognized, as it's strange a hardwired connection would just drop off.
Once we know that the hardware is still working I'd do the following.
1: Unplug the ethernet cable from your computer
2: Trash the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration folder and restart your computer
3: Upon restarting your computer, click on the apple and go to "System Preferences"
4: Click on the "Network" item
5: Change the "Show" selection box to say "Network Port Configurations"
6: Drag Built in Ethernet to the top of the port list
7: If you have a DSL internet connection that is a PPPoE connection type, then change the "Show" selection box to "Built in Ethernet"
8: Go into the PPPoE tab, check the "connect using PPPoE" selection box and enter the appropriate information
9: click on "apple now" in the bottom left corner
10: Plug in your ethernet cable and restart the computer
If you are not connected after restarting we've narrowed out the possibility of it being hardware related and also ruled out the fact that there could have been any corruption in the SystemConfiguration folder. If you're still not connected, change the "Show" box in Network preferences to "Built in Ethernet" and go into the TCP/IP tab to see if you have an IP address...if so, what is it?
Sorry for the long post, but internet connection issues are always fun.
You can always just reset your modem after going through that whole ordeal with the network preferences.
I dunno, let us know if you get anywhere.

  • Poor network performance on wired ethernet port and airport

I'm using Leopard 10.5.1 on a home network comprised of a new, fully up-to-date (firmware wise) D-link wireless router and a couple ethernet hubs. I initially had problems because of old router firmware, but buying the new router and making sure firmware was up-to-date seems to have solved the connection problems. What I now experience is that whichever network cennection I am using, wireless or wired ethernet port, will slow down so slow that it's impossible to get any web content, upload files to my local server, or sent emails with any kind of attachment. Turning off the connection I am using, either wired ethernet or airport, and switching to the other solves the problem for a short time, usually a couple days or so. Then that connection with slow down and I have to switch back - again solving the problem. So to keep my network connection alive, I have to keep switching back and forth between the wired ethernet and the airport connection.
The rest of my network consists of several Windows machines including a Windows 2000 server. None of these devices ever have any problems with network access.
I've tried playing with the advanced settings with no luck. Does anyone know of a specific setting that might be the culprit?

    Hi ,
Maybe you can try to disable checksum offloading and jumbo frames on the Physical NIC (ESX platform) to check result .
    Best Regards

  • WIRED ETHERNET and iTouch

I am researching some alternative uses for the iTouch. I work in an IT department and we are considering getting iTouch's for the tech's as a mobile device. The idea is to lessen the amount of equipment we bring around. For most jobs, wireless is great. But there's one area where being wired could sell the team on the iTouch.
    Q. Is there an adapter that can be connected so that the iTouch accesses the network via a wired, ethernet connection.
The reason we would want to do this is to determine whether a jack is hot or not. I realize this is not a full replacement for a fluke, but we would like to explore the option if it exists.
Thank you in advance for any information.

Here's why it is not referred to as iTouch:

  • Mountain Lion drops WIRED ethernet (mail, ical, steam lose connection)

Since im on 10.8 i cant play one real game on Steam because i get network drops that cut my connection to my fritz.box.
After this i cant connect to things like ical or mail and have to restart my mac, in mail i have to re-generate a new password for gmail.
the steam chat or msn dont shows any sign of connection lost, so this is a bit confusing.
running a static ip network in 10.10.10.1-10.10.10.200, where the mac is 10.10.10.20.
    Console spams
CalenderAgent : Unexpected EOF, returning last token as fallback
    Contacts :
Got error Verbindung zum Server konnte nicht hergestellt werden. (-1004) on subscription request (connection = <NSURLConnection: 0x7fb18d0ab100>)
Mail cant connect, requests a new password, which is rly crap, i have to create a new password with google every hour when mail try a connect after that network lag/drop whatever.
but a.e. steam chat is running fine and dont get any disconnect.

    Any ideas

Update: I think I've pinpointed this problem to the Time Capsule.  I've replaced the Time Capsule with my Airport Express, and everything works flawlessly.  So:
Cable Modem -> MacBook Air (via ethernet cable) = Works fine
Cable Modem -> Airport Express -> MacBook Air = Works fine
Cable Modem -> Time Capsule -> MacBook Air = Doesn't work
I've reset the Time Capsule to factory defaults (holding down reset button while plugging in power) = no change
When I first plug the Time Capsule into the Cable Modem, I can get internet for few seconds.  But eventually the "Internet" status light in Airport Utility goes yellow and I can't access the internet at all.
It would be interesting to try a different cable modem with the Time Capsule but I don't have one.
Time to call Apple again I think.

  • No Ethernet Adapter (en2) option in the network drop down)

Hi I am installing a Harmony 900 and need to setup a ethernet adapter (en2) in the system config-->network, however, that is not one of my options.
Any suggestions on what I need to do to get that showing in the drop down?

From the Harmony support site - here are the directions provided
To manually configure the Logitech Harmony USB drivers, follow the steps below:
Connect the Harmony remote to the computer via the USB cable and click OK
Double-click the System Preferences icon in the dock
    Double-click on Network
Click the + button near the bottom left corner of the window as shown below
In the Interface drop-down, select Ethernet Adapter (en2)
In the Service Name text field type in the model number of your Harmony remote. In this example we typed Harmony 1000 as shown below.
    Click on Create
In the Configure IPv4 drop-menu, select Manually.
Type the following as shown above:
    IP address field: 192.168.142.1
Type the following in the Subnet Mask field: 255.255.255.0
Type the following in the Router field: 192.168.142.253
    Then click Apply

  • Error 36 when connecting to wired ethernet network

I'm trying to connect my new iMac to my existing wired ethernet network. The network has been functioning for some time with 2 PCs connected to a router which is connected to a cable modem.
I have added the iMac by connecting it to the router. I am able to get the iMac connected to the internet via this setup. The problem is when I try to connect to one of the PCs from the iMac I get error 36. I have tried all the server addreses I can think of. (smb://ip address of the PC/shared drive letter; smb://computer name/share drive letter). It works on it for a while then kicks out the error message. I have "pinged" the PC and it is connected. File sharing is enabled both on th iMac and the PC.
Apple support says this is a Windows problem and has left me high and dry even though this is supposed to be seamless.
    Please help.

While waiting to be connected to a "product specialist" on Apple Tech Support I figured this out. First get the ip address for the PC you want to connect to by going to Start> Run>type cmd <enter>. Then type ipconfig <enter>. note "ip address". On the Mac Go>connect type smb://ip address for the PC click continue and you will get the sign on dialogue for the PC.
I am now happily copying my 4000 music files.

  • Dropped Wired Ethernet on Mountain Lion

    After upgrade to Mountain Lion
The Ethernet connection will no longer create a network connection to Broadband /  Router. Boot into Windows from Boot Camp and all is fine.
Wifi works fine in OSX. In Network Preferences you see Ethernet toggle between RED - No cable connection to Yellow cannot get IP
Again under Window on Bootcamp all is OK

    hmmm  interesting...
unplug your computer. Turn it on. Let it drain completly down where the computer actually shuts off itself. Then recharge your computer fully and see the difference.

  • Help needed with printer settings for wired ethernet connection

I'm hoping someone can help me with a network printing issue. I have a large format color laser printer (Tektronix Phaser) and since moving to OS 10.6 I can't figure out how to configure the printer so that the system sees it. I have a simple wired ethernet network with a couple of Macs and a couple of printers. All devices are connected via a switch. When using earlier OSs I was able to connect to the Phaser using Ethertalk. Obviously this is no longer supported and I can't figure out how to set the printer so the OS can see it. I have lots of options which can be turned on or off and in some cases set up in other ways: Ethertalk, IPX, Netware, TCP/IP, DNS, LPR, HTTP and remote internet printing, I've tried messing with these but the result is always the same--system doesn't see the printer. Currently Ethertalk is on, IPX and Netware are off, TCP/IP is on, DNS and LPR are on, as are AppSocket, HTTP, FTP and remote internet printing. I can change the IP address but no matter what address I've tried I cannot ping the printer. (I'm using a Gutenprint driver for this printer.)
I don't really know enough about all this to get anywhere and I haven't been able to find help anywhere even from tech friends. Xerox won't help me and neither will Apple. Any help would be appreciated. I can supply more detail on specifics where necessary. Thanks, Bob

Old Phaser models may becoming more and more difficult to use, but you can give this a try.
    1. Configure the printer via front panel to use TCP/IP and enable DHCP if it's supported. If not then you will need to configure an IP address for the printer together with your local network's mask, and gateway IP address. Except for the first the others will be provided by opening Network preferences to see what those settings are. The printer's IP address needs to be set somewhere within the range of IP addresses your router provides locally.
    2. You need the PPD file required for your printer. If you have the Phaser driver installer you can use it to install the PPD or you can extract the specific PPD from the installer package. This part is tricky because I don't know where you may find the driver now if you don't have the installer. The older installers can be accessed through the Finder by selecting the package then CTRL- or RIGHT-click and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. You can then rummage through the package to search for the PPD for your printer. Then navigate to the /Library/Printers/PPD/Contents/Resources/ folder and drop the PPD file inside.
    3. Open Print & Fax preferences and click on Add [+] to add a new printer. Click on the IP icon in the toolbar. Select Line Printer Daemon - LPD from the Protocol drop down menu. Input the IP address you assigned the printer in the Address field. You can file in the optional fields that follow. Then from the Print Using drop down menu locate the listing for your printer and select it.

  • How can I use AirPlay from a wireless device while in 'Join a network' mode with an Ethernet client?

I just got the brand new Airport Express (simultaneous dual-band 802.11n) and I'm trying to set it up to join an existing working wireless network that I have in my house, and to drive my home stereo amplifier and have my desktop hooked up via the wired Ethernet port on the Airport Express.  Here's how I set it up:
-Wireless mode is 'Join a wireless network'
-Wireless Network Name: <my home network>
    --Allow Ethernet clients is checked
-Internet is configured via DHCP (it gets a valid DHCP lease and IP address on my subnet)
    -AirPlay is enabled
-The audio out from the Airport Express is connected to my amplifier via an optical digital cable.
If I leave it set up just as described above, I can select the Airport device from iTunes on my MacBook Pro and play music directly to the speakers.  Perfect.
The problem comes when I go to plug in my desktop to the wired Ethernet port on the Airport Express.  As soon as I plug in the Ethernet, AirPlay stops working on the laptop.  Even if iTunes is in the middle of playing a track, the track will stop when the Ethernet cable is plugged in (with a device on the other end).  Doesn't matter which of the two Ethernet ports I use.  My desktop is able to use the internet while plugged in to the Airport Express, but iTunes on the laptop is no longer able to connect to the Airport Express to use AirPlay.
I've found that if instead of plugging my desktop into the Airport Express's wired ethernet, I plug in the laptop, then iTunes on the laptop is able to use AirPlay -- but then no other devices on the network are able to use AirPlay.
It appears that as soon as I plug in a wired Ethernet device to the Airport Express it only "listens" to AirPlay connections from devices connected to that wired interface.  But this is the opposite of what I want.  I want it to listen to AirPlay connections from wireless devices connected to the same network as the Airport Express.  Is this possible?  Is there some hidden setting I have to enable?
    Thanks!

    Hi Hreb,
I can find nothing wrong with your configuration, but I was curious if there were something illegal about having an Express "join" a wireless network, and still have AirPlay enabled for wireless clients while simultaneously serving as a bridge to a wired one.
To address that uncertainty I implemented your proposed application with the preceding model AirPort Express, and determined it works as you would expect it to: I connected a wired-only PC to the Express, verified that it can connect to the Internet, and streamed Airtunes from a Mac to speakers connected to the Express. I think this is what you want, and it works with no surprises. I was also able to stream Airtunes from the PC connected to the Express as you did, but as you know only one device can stream to the Express at any one time.
I do not have a new simultaneous dual band Express to test though, so all I can conclude is that there may be a bug with the new one that is preventing you from accomplishing this.
Since it is new, I recommend you call Applecare on Monday and explain what you are trying to do. Explain it works with the older Express and you think this ability should remain unchanged with the new dual band model. It is likely they won't be able to help, and at best will offer to exchange it for another one, but if it is a bug as I suspect any replacement dual-band Express will behave the same way.
The important thing is to inform Apple and obtain a case number so that this problem will eventually get the attention of Engineering who might be able to address this with a future update.
Let me know what you find out. Thanks.

  • How to set up printers using wired ethernet without appletalk

Curse of Snow Leopard. I've spent an hour or more reading posts to no avail. I have a couple of macs on a wired ethernet network and a couple of older printers. Everything was a breeze to set up using Appletalk but now that I have a nice new Mac Pro and OS 10.6 I'm stuck.
Can someone walk me through this process step by step? Or point me to instructions I can understand? I know the printer IP addresses. I know that for the computers I'm using DHCP which I vaguely know has something to do with the internet. I get that these addresses change and that's bad for sending to a printer. I do not get how to change the printer addresses--they are programmed in to the hardware in both (old--from the '90s). I also don't have a clue what the difference is between IP printer, LPD printer, etc. I can get the system to see the printers and I can set them up but nothing prints. Yes, I could use a print server running an older OS with Appletalk but I'd really like not to have to--power, heat, noisy fans, more boxes and monitors in my workspace.

Well, I suggest you do some experimenting - try IP > HP Jetdirect protocol instead of LPD (Jetdirect doesn't require a queue name).
I have seen other queue name possibilities mentioned on the web - PS (means send to the postscript queue), PCL (means send to the PCL queue), and text (means send to an unfiltered text queue).
text may be a good first try for queue name - to see if anything will work.
Have you tried pinging that IP address to make sure it is right? Is your computer's IP address in that same subnet 192.168.1.xxx?

  • Intel wired ethernet driver stops working

We have this issue with several T400 and T500 series ThinkPads that the Intel ethernet driver stops working after a while. All this started to happen maybe a month ago. We have both 32- and 64-bit Windows 7 OSs.
Wired ethernet works ok first, but after a few hours or a day or two this yellow exclamation mark appears on the network icon and it says limited or no connectivity. Wired network stops working and there is nothing we can do to fix this other than reboot the computer. It doesn't even shut down properly, just says "Shutting down" forever and blinks the HDD led maybe once a second. So we have to force it and after booting everything is ok until the next time this happens.
When the network stops working, nothing can be done with the driver because everything just hangs. You cannot disable the connection or uninstall the adapter from Device Manager or anything. Unplugging the ethernet cable does not help either. There is nothing about this problem in the Event log other than about the symptoms of not having a network connection.
What could be the source of this problem? Do you have any ideas about how to diagnose this problem further? We have the newest driver and I have also tried the newest driver from Intel.

Go to Local Area Connection (Wired Intel adapter), Properties and the Configure button, in the Power Management Tab UNCHECK "Allow the Computer to turn off this device to save power".
Window7 does NOT always resolve IP and DHCP when it come out of sleep etc. All attempt to release/renew are in vain. I have seen this on various systems for some time. Occassionally a router reboot fixes it but most of the time is the PC. Frustrating but for Wired use this should always be disabled if you're using it a lot. Power savings is not in your best interest.
Let me know if that does it.

  • I have a new MBRP. On wired ethernet it can be used as a wireless hotspot. Since 802.11ac gets better range I'd like to use it with 802.11ac as a hotspot for my older 802.11g/ndevices. Can I do that ?

I know that if I use wired ethernet then the  MBRP can be a wirelss hotspot for other devices. Since the MBRP supports 802.11ac and I have a new 802.11ac wireless router it gets much better range than my older 802.11/n devices.  There are places in teh house where the MBRP connects to the wireless but where older 802.11g/n devices lare out of range. In those rooms I'd like to use my MBRP connected to the network wirelessly using 802.11ac as a hotspot for the nearby 802.11 g/n devices. Anyone know if that can be done and how to do it ?

Turn on Internet Sharing in Sharing preferences. Share the Ethernet connection to wireless.

  • Time capsule is very slow on wired Ethernet - tested from multiple sources

I purchased a 2 TB Time Capsule today. I want to use it for automatic backups of my Macbook, and I also want to use it to store files from my Windows PC's.
My TC is connected to my network using wred Ethernet only (Wireless is disabled in the TC)
My problem is that transferring files to the TC is incredibly slow. I have been doing some research and found lots of articles that talk about wireless interference and various problems with interoperability between WiFi flavors. None of these would seen to apply as I am using only wired Ethernet to transfer my files.
I also found a couple of discussions that describe how to make a change to the Mac's TCP/IP configuration to avoid a strange network condition slowing things down. This solution doesn't seem applicable as I am seeing the performance problem regardless of where I copy files FROM (I have a mixed environment with Windows and Linux and Mac systems)
Also, I am aware that the inital backup with Time Machine will be slow but I don't think that's relevant to my situation.
My TC is configured for file sharing so I can read and write files from my various Windows systems on the network. When I copy a set of large files to the TC, I see a typical transfer rate of 5 - 6 MB / Second. To me, this is completely abnormal and here is why: When I copy the same files, from the same Windows system, to a server on my network I get about 60 MB / second or about 10 times the transfer rates.
The TC is running firmware 7.4.2.
    What gives?

I also had the same issue. My Time Capsule was connect to the Linksys router WAG325N. I had a wireless network broadcasted from the Linksys and a different one from the Time Capsule. When connected to the TIme Capsule wireless network i pinked the Linksys router and got 10% to 30% pack loss. When i pinked the Time Capsule i got 0% loss. I used the AirPort Utility and changed the "Internet" "Ethernet WAN Port" from automatic to "10 Mbps/Full Duplex" and this seem to fix the slow internet.
I guess the Linksys and Time Capsule as issues with port speed negotiation.

  • Want to bridge two wired ethernet connections

I have a Core Duo based Mini that was just replaced with a new aluminum MacBook. I am going to re-purpose the mini as a media center device. I already have a TiVo HD unit hooked up to the same TV. The TiVo is hooked up through a wired ethernet connection, to better support streaming and the transfer large video files. Due to the visibility of the location, I would prefer not to place a hub there, and I would prefer to avoid having an extra power cord around for a hub.
I'm considering getting a USB ethernet device. Then I can connect the TiVo box to the internal ethernet port (en0) and connect the usb ethernet port (en1?) to the remainder of the network. I would then bridge the connections. Note that routing is probably not sufficient, because the other TiVo units would not detect the one on the different network. I need a bridge, which would allow all the TiVo units, including the one behind the Mini, to be on the same network and discover each other via broadcasts.
This is normally a fairly trivial thing to set up within a unix environment. I can find tons on information on how to do it in Linux. But I cannot find any info on doing this within Mac OS X.
Also, where can I find information on USB ethernet devices supported within OS X?

    GdayBruce,
Even though you don't mention it, I am assuming that somewhere in this gordian mix you have a router. Beyond that, I cannot fathom what it is you are trying to do here. You may be making things way more complicated than they need be.
I think I get that you want to connect the Mini to the network (what network, though, and created by what device??? How many "networks" are there, and what are their purposes?), then connect the one and only TiVo unit you mention to the Mini, using the Mini as a "bridge."
OK, let's just start this whole thing over. You need a router. Full Stop. One router. Full Stop. That router will be connected, no doubt, to some type of modem (cable or DSL) of course, and everything else will connect to it, either wirelessly or via ethernet. One router, one network.
Now, one way to avoid having to route cables all over the place in order to connect devices via ethernet is to create a wireless network and use additional wireless devices as "bridges." THese devices would be configured to connect to the wireless network, then provide a wired ethernet connection to that wireless network. In other words, they "bridge" the two. Older Airport Express units could bridge ethernet to wireless, but no the other way around. I'm not sure if the current AEs can bridge wireless to ethernet (they might, but I'm not sure).
