Network Extender traffic when not in use?
I just installed a network extender and noticed that the blue WAN light is solid/blinking sometimes even when there is no call in progress, and wonder if the NE is sending "hi how are you" traffic into the network. Does anyone know if this is a "chatty" device?
Thanks, apologize if this has been asked before, but a quick search didn't find it.
It's always fun to say hi ptcaufield! No worries about the indicator on your network extender. The network extender maintains a constant connection to your internet source. It is normal for the WAN LED indicator to show a solid or flashing blue light to show your unit is connected and transmitting data. Small amounts of data may still be transmitted even when you are not using your wireless phones.
Sincerely,

Is Chromium Spying When Not in Use?
I just learned of a tool called "nethog", installed it and watched to see what programs were generating traffic on my computer. One of them was chromium, which is funny because I wasn't using Chromium.
I've known for some time thanks to "top" that chromium runs when I'm not using it. I thought that it was annoying, and that it embedded itself into some autostart file, and was just taking up memory so that it would launch faster for when I actually opened it. However, I never suspected that it was generating network traffic when not in use.
I've since uninstalled Chromium, but I ran whois on one of the IPs that it was connecting to. It was Edgecast, a "Content delivery" service owned by Disney.
Is anyone else seeing this?

So to be clear, other people are experiencing this, and are OK with the idea that Chromium is running, and communicating with websites when the browser is closed (and hasn't been opened in weeks across multiple boots)?
Sure it is open source, but it is also big, complex, and created by a company that is very interested in harvesting your data. I tend to think of Google as a benevolent giant, and I have a certain amount of faith in the open source process, but you could probably hide a small city in chromium's source code, or an vulnerability the size of the San Andreas fault.
Heh, maybe I'm paranoid, or maybe I am after all the only one that experienced this after all. But to be honest, programs running without my explicit permission, phoning home in ways that I could not easily control or understand were a large part of the reason that I left windows so many years ago.
Actually it does have your permission and it *can* be useful. You can just deactivate it with unticking "run in background". I like it as I'm sometimes too lazy to open up another mail program and thus just fire up GMail and get notified of it – even when not running in foreground.
So yeah, there's a not-spying reason for it but we can't really know whether this is the only reason ^^. -
Set 2520 printer to turnoff when not in use
How do you set the printer to sleep when not in use?
This question was solved.
View Solution.Page 65 of your User Guide has all the information.
The HP Photosmart Energy Save Mode reduces energy use by entering a sleep mode after 5 minutes of inactivity.
The time to sleep mode can be extended to 10 or 15 minutes.
NOTE: This feature is on by default and cannot be turned off.
To set Energy Save Mode
1. Touch the Setup icon.
2. Touch Preferences.
3. Scroll through the options and touch Energy Save Mode.
4. Touch the desired time interval (5, 10 or 15 minutes).
Say thanks by clicking the Kudos Thumbs Up to the right in the post.
If my post resolved your problem, please mark it as an Accepted Solution ...

Unplugging STBs when not in use?
We've bought some power-saver surge protectors so we can unplug electronic devices when not in use.
I know I have to keep the router plugged in, and I'll probably keep the DVR plugged in as well.
But as for my other two STBs (one HD, one SD), is there any reason not to unplug those when not in use? Do they need to stay connected to the network for any reason?
Since the first answer to most STB problems seems to be "try unplugging it first" it seems that regular unplugging should be okay, but will I wear them out early by essentially rebooting several times a week?Probably not a good idea. The stb's do not draw a lot of power so your not going to save much money. And Verizon is constantly updating and "upgrading" (this is debatable in some cases) the stbs, and they do it at night when it is least likely to affect people watching tv. If your boxes are unplugged they wont update when they are told to do it. Probably would not be a huge issue but why tempt fate.
Now if you are going to be away for some time, like on a vacation, then yes, definitely unplug them. In fact unplug all your major electronics. But on a day to day basis, no, leave them plugged in.

IPhone4 battery draining when not in use
am just wondering if anyone experiencing battery draining when not in use? i charge my iphone4 before going to bed and woke up this morning to realise that my battery had drain 22% on stand by... is this normal? can anyone confirm it to me please, thank you
Just an update guys --after draining (on standby) over 20% of my battery charge last week, it has risen to or about 40+% in the last couple of days. I haven't changed any settings or whatsoever. I had to charged it twice during the day yesterday and it was bloody frustrating. anyway, i went to the apple shop today and told them the problem... they scanned my iphone4's battery and it was evident and showed when was the last time it was charged and how much battery life has it lost throughout the day. After scanning my iphone we did not even have to discuss repair or do any setting or software checks. I was gobsmacked --as i did not have to ask for a replacement, I was immediately offered a swap to a brand new iPhone4... lucky me? umm, i don't know...maybe? But the thing is, they seemed to be aware of the problem and they are keeping a low profile on tackling the problem. so my suggestion is if anyone has a battery problem with their unit, take it to apple and have the battery scan. As such, i have to wait and see if this new unit will present the same problem, although i must admit, for some reason, this new unit has a slight different behaviour than my previous iphone4.
Other issues on my previous iPhone4:
1. frequently dropping signal --not a problem with the new replacement unit
2. if i turn off my "phone" feature on the multitasking bar, red dot appears on the phone icon and i couldn't make a call as it seemed blocked and it kept asking me to set-up the voicemail feature every time --again, not a problem with the new unit.
3. even my tomtom app has changed its behaviour, i have discovered new features without updating the app --strange isn't it?
4. playing NOVA game was a pain with the previous unit as i kept getting network problem and interrupting the game.
5. it kept shuffling my music when i'm using ipod whilst walking. imagine, hearing about 8 different tunes in a span of 5 seconds...
anyway, time will tell with this new unit as i have kept the same settings from my previous unit and uploaded my previous back-up data and apps. so it would be like having my old iphone4 and we'll see in the morning if it will drain on stand by as well --i hope not 'cos am getting really frustrated with it. oh, by the way, blue tooth feature don't work with my new replacement unit --NICE!!! -

The power saving will be negligible, and it may take time to re-establish a connection to your ISP's Network. -
Should I turn off my Mac Pro when not in use or leave it running?
I have been told I should never turn off my computer by some people, and others say that I should always turn it off when not in use! I use my Mac Pro primarily for music recording/editing in my home studio or word processing. Now that I have an iPad I use that for web browsing, email, FBing, etc. and I find myself on my Mac Pro a lot less. I get the basis behind both trains of thought; those who leave it on feel always stopping and starting up puts unnecessary wear on the moving disks, and those who shut down think if the parts are always moving they are bound to wear out faster. I am not as concerned with conserving power as I am with keeping my machine safe! If you have any information on this topic I would love to hear it. Thanks!
Providing you have a robust firewal and are not worried as a result about being hacked then leave it turned on and allow it to sleep. Make sure you allow the screen to sleep as well a that is the item that is more prone to damage by being left on all the time.
I never turn my machine off, never have with any of my Macs ever since my first one back in 1979-ish and have never suffered any adverse affects. Today, the power drain is so small when allowed to sleep that I doubt they would offend even the ardent 'turn off everything and pull out the plug to save the planet' person.
If you have an iPad or iPod synced with the Mac for email and iCal and address Book etc. then if you leave it on it should be up to date as soon as you return home, mine is anyway. With iCloud coming out very soon that may come into play even more so with all its advance pushing etc. Just a thought.
One advantage in leaving the machine on (sleep) is that you can access it from anywhere in the world should the need arise with the appropriate settings, which you can't if you turn it off.
Leave it on. -
Am I supposed to leave the display plugged in when not in use?
should the display be left plugged in when not in use? is it just like leaving the power cord to the MacBoold Pro plugged in when the computer is off?
thanksSure, you can leave the display plugged into the socket, provided you turn OFF the display itself. There must be somewhere some switch or touch button that will turn the display OFF.
Usually, those displays use a lot of power, so it's better to save
I shall add an unrequested piece of advice: if you don't this already, please use some kind of electrical surge protector
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surge_protector> to connect your computer, display, printer, router, etc to the wall socket. -
IPhone resets itself when not in use
I have an original iPhone which has been updated to 3.0. Since the update I've noticed that the phone will spontaneously restart itself when not in use. When this happens I'll notice the screen light up with the silver Apple logo and then go blank. This will happen repeatedly. While this is going on I can't use the phone until I plug it into the computer. Once iTunes does it's thing the phone will return to normal for a while - sometimes a day or two - before repeating this behavior. I have reset and restored the phone but without solving the problem. Apart from this everything seems to be working properly.
Any ideas?Have you tried restoring and setting up as a new phone (i.e., not restoring from a backup)? Sometimes those backups bring along whatever is messing up your phone.

When To and when NOT to use cursors
Can anyone please refer to a good resource about When to and When NOT to use cursors.
I have search on line but I haven't find anything really good.
Thank you.
HIf you can do it in a single SQL statement (one UPDATE or whatever), that will almost always be more efficient than a loop construct.
If you absolutely need a loop, bulk operations (BULK COLLECT, FORALL) will be more efficient than row-by-row processing for any significant number of rows.
If it is a relatively small number of rows, I would then weigh up the simplicity of a Cursor FOR loop (although Regarding the creation of simple cursors).
btw I loved that comedy Forms 3 article, but surely April 1st isn't until Saturday? -
IMac (Oct 2009) keeps shutting down and restarting when not being used.
At least once a day, usually when not being used, I will see a dialog box that say computer had to restart due to a problem. data in problem report does not clearly state problem - many multi-page entries
Have reinstalled OS 10.8.2 once
this morning tried to restart with safe boot and had spinning beach ball for more than 15 minutes. shut down and restarted nin recovery mode. verified and repaired permissions (all seem to be related to Canon Pronter plug-ins- had an error message yesteday asking if I wanted to repair printer software and I said yes). Printer seems to be working. Had one statement that indicated a screensaver issue-see below
a while back, iTunes album art screensaver hung up with just two album covers flipping in all rows and columns.
after a few restarts, it started working correctly again..- yesterday I set screen saver to never, but still had a crash this morningHere's the latest panic report. BTW, I ran for a while from an external system boot - very sloww (thumbdrive), but nothing happened. However, when I retarted I tried to restart in Safe Mode and the launch never completed (30 minutes without start)

My ext HDs spin too hard when not in use , how do I slow em up ?
some externals have the smarts about them but others just wizz too hard when not in use , old macs had a processor setting I could change , but not MBP
I should be able to tell these HDs to chill till I call on them right ? thanks for any help[ you can offer me .
cheers RYou don't. You have no control over the spin rate of any hard drive.
To encourage the external drive(s) to spin down when they aren't in use, System Prefs > Energy Saver > check the box for "Spin down hard disks when possible." But you'll find that the OS checks in on those drives quite frequently, spinning them back up again. So the likelihood of their spinning down very often or ever staying quiescent for long is small. -
i downloaded the new 7 update on my ipad. it now will not charge to 100% and loses power even when not in use. any solutions ??
Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.
Then plug it in and let it fully charge. -
