Network Game - Adding more players

Hey. i am in the middle of making a network game. I am have a problem with adding new players.
I am not really sure the best way to do this but what I am doing this now is when a player is first created a
string is sent to the server and returns with how many clients there are and then sets a client id based on that result.
In the main class I have a thread running which moves the players that where created (new Players are stored in an arraylist). Whenever a
player moves it sends its id and current position to the server and the server broadcasts it to all clients.
So, when this thread runs it gets the id number that it broadcasted and if it is higher than the arraylist of stored players, then I create a new player,
and add to the arraylist which is then drawn by the paint method.
When i add a new player, I either add it from another computer or run the program again and connect to the server through port and ip address.
Is this the correct way to do this because what is happening is that when a second players tried to join new players keep getting added. If any of this is not clear I will try and
explain it better, sorry
Thanks in advance for any help given,
Marc

if the game is really simple, sure why not. If your game will send a lot of data over the network, then you'll end up in the interesting part of network game programming; how to deal with latency / slow connections. Whole studies have been made out of that subject alone and it is far from easy material to understand, solve and implement.
I would suggest you check out websites such as gamasutra and gamedev.net for discussions on the topic. A good place to get questions answered is here:
http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/showfaq.asp?forum_id=15
Don't let the fact that it is aimed at C++ scare you away, the information in there mostly applies in general.
because what is happening is that when a second players tried to join new players keep getting addedYes well that would be a bug in your code. Nobody can help you with that until you provide the code that is misbehaving.

  • Network Game - Sending Over a network question

I am going to make my first network game.
I have read tutorials on networking and have designed an echoserver.
I am however not sure how to pass player moves over the network. I know that it will work the same way as strings
but how do I pass other players new positions so I can then broadcast changes to all other clients.
Thanks in advance for any help
    Marc

you could use serialization, but that can be too big an overhead when you have a lot of players. I would use a simple messaging system, where you send strings over the network in a specific format that you can create on the sending side and unpack on the receiving side. Something like:
    ID;PARAMS
where ID is a messageId identifying the specific type of message you are sending, and PARAMS is a list of parameters that depend on the message type. For example a movement message could be:
    1;R;40
This would then mean that the player moved 40 "units" to the Right. A very simple example, of course adapt to your game's situation.
The advantage of a system like this is that you can string together multiple messages and send them at once. At the receiving end you can just keep parsing messages from the string until there is no more data.
If you are really tight on bandwidth, then you'll have to start packing bits in binary data in stead. I would go for the messaging system first though, it is the easiest to get working.

  • Network game

    Hello all,
I'm planning on building a network game for use over the internet. Now I'm working on the network communication but I'm running into difficulties.
I need a way so that when player 1 on computer 1 tells the game my character is going to move here, this is send over the internet to the server. when the server receives that, it needs to send the move over to player 2 on computer 2.
I know I can do this by simply broadcasting the move action to all connected players, but this has some difficulties as I have to take into account that player 1 might have a faster internet connection and thus will move faster on his comp then the same character would move on the comp of player 2.
If you understand what I mean.
    Mark

well yes, this would probably work with a small number of players. But it would also generate excessive network trafic. It would be much more efficient to have the players send their move (I want to go there with this speed) to the server. Then let the server calculate their path and send their positions to each client every x seconds. All the clients need to do then is have some piece of code to interpolate the trajectory in between the points send by the server.
This would cut network trafic significantly because only the server is needed to send the intermediate positions to the clients.

  • Sychronization in network game

i want to write a simple game which would have multiplayer mode over network.
(maybe lan or internet) so i have many questions...
how to write network multi-player game? without serious lagging (not due to network) but a lots of data to transfer?
how to transfer data? multi-unicast/multicast? what model would be better? server-client?
how to ensure fluency in the game?
what technique can i apply to make the game running more smooth?
    any idea?

Several quick tips for adherance to sound software enginering techniques for any type of multiplayer game design:
    1) depending on the complexity of your project I'd devote at least 10% of your total development time in the design. The better your design, strong oo, data coupling issues, thread manager, bufferStrategy... the easier it will be to actually finish the game. 98% of all games started never get finished. This means having all of your Network communciations in one class or subclassing out extra features that might not be needed for your based network messaging system.
    2. Always thread your communications with higher level priority then your draw method. I've found that setting my network thread to normal and my draw thread to low priority yields far less lag then having them both set to normal priority. The reason for doing this should be evident. Messages are much more important then repainting the display as far as multiplayer games are concerned.
    3. create any new 2d game in Fullscreen Mode and use a bufferStrategy that allows you to flip between offscreen buffers. This will speed up any application written in java tremendously. Repress the repaint call that is normally triggered by the awt. You will be designing your own painting alogrithm so having repaint still active will only slow things down.
    4. Create a separate physics thread from the paint thread. These 2 things need to be separated in order to create fluency in your game. Depending on your actual game desing the physics thread will be responsible for moving things around in your world and handling most of the game communication with other players. The paint thread should only be responsible for drawing the current state of the world. This is probably obvious to most without being said but I've seen a lot of people make this mistake in their initial designs and they updated their game objects just before or after each repaint..
    5. My last point addresses your network traffic issues. There are a lot of techniques out there that can improve your data transfer rate. For example a technique called deadreckoning is often used to reduce the amount of network traffic by 90% or more. Deadreckoning, simply stated, estimates what every other persons objects will be in the physical world since the last message you received. If plausable for your game idea you could send routinue messages to each other player in the game world every 1/2 sec or second and between message communication have your physics thread estimate changes in the world until you receive the next message. Then verify that your estimate were correct/incorrect and reset them if needed.
Make sure you are only sending data on objects whos modes have changed. If nothing has changed with an object then its data doesn't need to be sent to the other players.
Hope this helps. you were rather vague about your development so it really isn't possible to suggest one protocal for your network over any other protocal.

  • Adding more RAM to Tiger

My ibook has 512MB's of RAM. I am happy with this. However since next year I plan to return to school to get a Masters in Ministry, I may need more RAM. From 2001-2005 while I working on my undergrad I used a Performa 6360 which had 136MB's of RAM + RAM Doubler. I was able to run some 20 apps at one time (or more) without a major slowdown. I cannot do this with Tiger, and since I plan to get the OSX version of Dave to access other PC's on the network (since whatever is built int OSX pales in comparison to Dave). On my Performa 6360 Dave was a necessity, since the campus dumped using Macs in 2002. I remember my 1st year (2001-2002) I could access a number of Macs on the Appletalk network at the time. But after the Fall 2002 semester the mac got dumped. Some students still used Macs, but fewer and fewer used them in the 2003-2005 years.
So my question is. Will maxing out my ibook to a gig of RAM although me to run some 20-30m apps at one time (like I could on the Performa) or was OSX Tiger just not designed for this?
OSX Tiger is much better than OS 9.1, but not in all areas as OS 9.x and before do have their advantages over Tiger.
    Thanks,
    John

Actually, OS 9 does not have any advantage over OS X. You had 136 MB of ram plus RamDoubler, why do you think 512 MB of ram will be less adequate?
RamDoubler merely did what OS X does as part of how it works. It did not give you more ram it just allocated more to the app up front while dropping background apps as low as possible. This is what OS X does.
If you were running 20 - 30 apps with 136 MB of ram then they weren't ram hogs at all and it's very likely you can run them without adding more ram now.
OS X handles virtual memory much better too. In the old days I could run 2-3 apps at a time, now I can run 10-12, and most of mine are major ram hogs like Photoshop.

  • 5610 v9.40 games added???

Hi! I recently updated my 5610d-1 from 8.xx to 9.40...
    here's some details:
    Nokia 5610d-1
    v 9.40
    07-11-08
    Rm-242
    (c) Nokia
    Variant: 255.01
    Virtual Variant: No virtual variant
And I read that included in this version are gameslike tetris and brain challenge v2, but i just have the old set of games. Is this a problem? Please help me. I'm beginner to these...
    Thanks!

I posted this in another thread.
    ==============
    Hello,
I never experienced any crashes/restarts with v4.81 but decided to try this anyway. (Gone from v4.81 to v9.40)
I haven't done much yet but here are some of the obvious improvements.
    + Navigation/phone response quicker
+ Camera much better, quicker, overbright gone so you can take close ups with the flash on. (no strange clicking noises as mentioned by some people who used v8.XX)
+ Standard Nokia movies now play smoothly with no juddering. Maybe it can now play MP4s with more than 12fps?
+ Not sure what this feature is called (Organic desktop?) but the default wallpaper now animates/changes. The bars/shades move. Looks nice.
Has there always been 22 ring tones?
That's about it for now, will continue to test
    ==============
    New info
    Games (added)
    + Tetris
    + Brain challenge vol2
    Apps (added)
    + Youtube, have not tried
    + Opera mini
    + Widsets
    Video clip quality settings added
    + High
    + Normal
    + Basic
I do not agree with your observations about the screen distortions.
This has never happened even with v4.81 on my phone.
I do not agree with your sound/music observation, it sounds clear and crisp compared to v4.81.
Why do you want to increase the dB gains on the specific frequency ranges?
By doing that you are messing up the sound quality yourself.
I disagree with your stereo widening observation, with it off the sound is better.
By enabling this feature you are causing some right channels to be crossed over to the left speaker and vice versa.
This only makes matters worse for head phones.
Stereo widening + your messing about with the dB (equaliser) you completely ruin the sound.
And I have experienced 0 popping.
     Haven't tried the camera yet.
    Those are my observations.

  • How to extend the range of my Airport Extreme network by adding an Airport Express

How to extend the range of my Airport Extreme network by adding an Airport Express?

You have to make sure that the AirPort Express is in Factory Default Settings. If it is straight out of the box, it is ready to be configured.
The instructions that I will provide are for using AirPort Utility 6.0, which you have.
Locate the Express in the same room as the AirPort Extreme for the configuration. Power it up and allow a full minute for the Express to display a blinking amber light.
Make sure that the wireless is turned on your Mac
Open AirPort Utility 6.0 and look at the small rectangle in the upper left hand corner of the display. It should now read something like "Other AirPort Base Stations (1)"
Click on the rectangle, and then click on the AirPort Express xxxxxx listing
AirPort Utility will take a minute or two to analyze the settings on your network and then suggest that  the Express be configured to "Extend" your wireless network.
Edit the Base Station name to your liking, then click Next in the lower right hand corner
Allow a full minute or two let AirPort Utility do its work
When you see Setup Complete, click Done at the lower right of the window.
Now move the AirPort Express to a location that is approximately half way between the AirPort Extreme and the area that needs more wireless coverage.
    You should be in business.

  • Is there a way of remote accessing 'Games and More' on a mobile?

I am new to the forum, please excuse me if I am in the wrong space!
Is there a way of remotely accessing/executing Java applications that are residing in the 'Games and More.' folder on a mobile device?
e.g. Java application is downloaded into 'Games and More' and there is a requirement to execute the program from an ODP (On-Device-Portal). The ODP is external to the 'Games and More' folder but within the same mobile device.
    Many thanks

  • A problem about the policy of RMS which is added more than 500 principals

    Hello specialists ,
I've a question about RMS , when I added more than about 500 principals (users & groups ) into a policy in the RMS , it will report an error for any operation about the policy , and I find the error message as followed (for theconvenience, I paste all of the logs in the weblogic).
We have tested all of our environments : Weblogic , JBoss , Websphere , each of them  makes the same mistake . those operations include : try to open the documents protected by this kind of policies , to disable or enable the policies, to look the detail from the "adminui" . when decreasing the principals for this kind of policy to almost 450 (I am not sure the clearly number) with java code , the results will be ok .
So anyone can help me ? It's really very important for us , becuase our customer refused to pay the left money of this project till this problem is resolved . and I have reported this problem to the Enterprise Support in Indian (the case is :181916446), but , obviously , it seems they are burning my patience  . At the same time , I think it's a problem of the product , I think the SQL is really very bad ,at least , not so good .
Any help will be very appreciated !

  • Used to be able to connect to home Wi-Fi network, but no more

Used to be able to connect to home Wi-Fi network, but all of the sudden my IPad has stopped connecting.  I have verified that the Wi-Fi network is operational (IPhone, smart TV, laptop) and also that the IPAD is operational (Wi-Fi hot spots).  I have tried forgetting the network and adding it back in - but IPAD just sits and spins.  Have also forgotten network and intentionally entered incorrect password, and I do receive an immediate reject so I know the IPAD is talking to the router.
    Any ideas?

Look at iOS Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398

iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4199
    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

When starting Window XP on my laptop (which was connected, in the past, in a wi-fi network now no more available) appears immediatly this allert: "iTunes Helper was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. ERROR 7."
Reistallation of older or up to date  iTunes versions is impossible because: "Installation package iTunes.msi is located on a network resource not available" and because "It is impossible to remuove thew previous verson of iTunes. Impossible fto find the path."
    Someone can help me ???
    Thank,

Take a look at iTunes for Windows: "Error 7" message when opening iTunes. Perhaps your .NET Framework needs a repair.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • Adding more than 2Gb RAM to MacBook Pro

Do you guys know of any way to put more than 2Gb RAM in an Intel 17" MacBook Pro?
    Model Name: MacBook Pro 17"
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,2
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP12.0061.B03
    SMC Version: 1.5f10
I bought this when the 17" models first came out, and have been disappointed in it ever since (I broke my rule of NOT buying the first generation of something). As time has passed, the main problem is the 2Gb limit for RAM. That's NOWHERE near enough, and shame on Apple for that limitation. If there were some way, even a non-standard way, of adding more RAM, I could get reasonable performance from this computer. As it is, this has been a wasted $3600 investment. whew!
Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks! Feel free to email bruce at dbsdesigngroup.com

That's possible...actually likely. I'd love for that to be the case because I could fix it. ::Grin:: It's been this way since I first got it. When it arrived with just 1 Gb RAM, it was virtually unusable. I have a few apps as startup items, but they're just Firefox, Entourage, iNotepad, Linotype Font Explorer (with very few fonts activated), and Stickies. That shouldn't affect things much.
My needs are to use Photoshop, Illustrator and GoLive at the same time, with MSWord, Firefox and Entourage open as well. After the first bit of usage, I end up with 4-6 pageouts and a VERY slow computer. While it's doing the pageouts (which take quite a while), or switching between apps, it's very slow. And it's also extremly slow when Spotlight is indexing, so I disabled that.
I'm just not sure what it might be...nothing in Activity Monitor seems like it would be a culprit. Even in Safe Mode the problem is very evident.
I'll keep exploring and hopefully find something that will make this machine more viable for my use. I really appreciate the input greatly.

  • DV9429 us laptop: Has anyone successfully added more than the stated 2 gigs maximum RAM?

Hi, this computer works fine with Ubuntu (10.10, Unity makes it a dog ), unusably slow with Vista, and who knows about Win7.
If you have successfully added more RAM than the 2gigs which supposedly is the max, let me know how it went. 4 gigs would make things so much better.

  • HELP: Question on adding more RAM to my 2X dual core 2.66  Xenon  MacPro

    Hi,m
I current;y have 6GB of RAM in my MacPro and want to add a bit more.
    Right now I have 4 X 512MB strips and 4 1GB strips for a total of 6GB
I was thinking of adding 2 X 2GB strips to replace 2 of my 512MB strips which would give me 4 1GB strips, 2 2GB strips and 2 512MB strips filling all slots on both risers.
What is the proper order in which to place the memory strips? 2GB strips in slots A&B on the top riser and the rest paired wherever... or is there a specific order these need to be in?
Should I remove the 2 remaining 512MB strips altogether and leave 2 empty slots?
I have heard that adding more memory improperly can in some cases actually slow things down.
My MacPro is running the 32BIT EFI... but should be able to address all RAM up to 4GB per core. ( 12GB total)

2006: symmetrical quad sets are ideal.
    4 x 2GB + 4 x 1GB / even 4 x 4GB
The bad config is 6 DIMMs, yes.
More than 4 DIMMs = higher latency
There is no "per core." You can have up to 32GB (8 x 4GB).
WHY do you want more and what will this do for you?
Are you using CS3 or later? then yes 6GB is minimal.
Do you show page outs and swap files being used?
Where I recommend checking, and there are install guides and video:
