Network icon disappeared

Under system preferences "network" "bluetooth" and "sharing" have disappeared. I am no longer able to get online. 15 years of using macs, this has never happened. Please help. Thanks

Hello,
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.
Or...
To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...
Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
Does it work in the new account?

  • Network icon disappear...and It appears again when I remove the battery!

    Hi to everyone.
This "strange" issue appears now on a lot of pcs so it must be something that someonelse have experienced...
WIndows XP SP3 with italian multilanguage installed, pcs are Lenovo T400, X200 and  X200 tablets.
Sometime happens that the network icon (wireless and lan) doesn't appear on the taskbar, and when this happens you are not able to open the network connections.
The "funny" thing is that if you remove the battery from the laptop, the network icon appear again and network connection magically opens! I've tried to update pcs drivers but without any remarkable result.
Has someone reported a similar issue?

Any suggestions on what this can be?
A dead battery.  Buy a new one.

It's not necessary, but is a good troubleshooting step.  How to do so varies from brand to brand.  Look at the manufacturers website, they should have a manual available that explains how to access the settings and change it.

In that case, I would strongly encourage you to connect them via a short Ethernet cable.  The proximity of the two devices could be the culprit in the video quality issues.

  • Intel ProSET/Wireless - Windows 7 - Network System Icon Disappears

I carefully removed the Intel ProSET/Wireless Vista software on my x200 and then did a Windows 7 upgrade install and finally reinstalled the W7 version of ProSET software.  Everything seems to work OK, including the WiFi software.  The only strange thing is the disappearance of the Network System Icon when I am connected via Ethernet cable (even when the System Icon is checked "on").  I did a Repair Install of W7 and the Network Icon worked fine UNTIL I reinstalled the ProSET software, which leads me to conclude that the WiFi software is causing this conflict.
Is this a correct diagnosis of the problem and, if so, what should I do about it (other than doing a clean install, which I am looking to avoid doing for a variety of reasons)?

Don't know for sure if this will help but there are 2 places this can be turned off (at least with wireless) by right clicking  the arrow for show hidden icons it brings up Customize notification icons or right clicking the battery and plug icon to the right of it and it brings up Turn system icons on or off. At least that's the way it is on T500.
    Hope this helps

  • Vista Network Icon in System Tray Disappeared

I'm running Vista on my MacBook and a few weeks ago, I noticed that my networking icon that displays when i'm connected via LAN or wireless disappeared. I have no idea how to get it back. There used to be a way in XP that I know of but I'm lost here. Anyone got any ideas?

*Right Click* on an empty portion of your taskbar.
Choose Properties on the window that appears.
    Choose the *Notification Area* tab.
Look below for *System Icons* section and ensure that there is a check mark next to Network.
This will show the network/Lan/Wireless icon in the system tray.

  • Network Icon/link disappeared

Ok. so somehow I managed to "eject" or get rid of my network icon that allows me to click through to find other computers, etc. It used to appear under my hard drive icon in the left side of the finder window when I clicked on hard drive. Any ideas on how to get it back there? or how to acccess the network when it doesn't reside there? Thanks!

Nevermind. Found the answer in a previous post!

  • On Finder Freeze/Relaunch All my desktop files & icons disappear

    The title sums it up.
When ever my mac decides to go into spinning wheel mode and I have to force quit/relaunch finder, when I relaunch finder every desktop file & icon disappear.
At that point I'm forced to push the shutdown button on the tower and reboot, then all is well until the next time.
And the next time could be a day or a few days or a week. No rhyme or reason why.
Please help me solve this frustrating problem.
    Thanks

Cloud backup plans can slow your Mac down, and if used simultaneously with your Mac's networking, or you have an unreliable internet connection, could be the cause of your freezes.  You may be better off seeing if turning off iCloud temporarily helps.   This can especially be a problem with non-Apple routers whose firmware may not be up to date.   Multitasking with backups can lead to corruption of your backups.  Time Machine should only backup to hard drives twice the capacity of the original, otherwise it spends a lot of time trying to discover which archives to eraes to maintain room.  Here are some other options:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1992
Energy Saver can also create problems for backups, as it takes a moment for the Mac to recognize the connection.  Use screen saver instead of Energy Saver when backing up.  System Preferences lets you control both.   Putting hard drives to sleep when backing up is ill advised.

  • WiFi icon disappears in landscape mode

On my 32GB iPhone 3G-S running version 3.1.2, while in Safari or Mail, the WiFi icon disappears when I turn the phone from portrait to landscape mode. I am still connected to the WiFi network OK and can use the applications fine, but there is no verification that I am connected. For completeness, I am currently in Europe and have placed the phone in Airplane Mode to avoid international roaming and data charges.
Has anyone else seen this behavior?

Well - I appear to have, at least temporarily, solved this problem by doing a phone reset. Icon is now staying visible in landscape mode after the reset.

  • Home sharing icon disappears on PC and Mac

In my house, we've been using home sharing between a PC (Windows 7), a Mac (OS X 10.8.2), and two iPad 2s with no issues for several months.  It was working as recently as 23 Dec 12. Now, two days later, it is not working on the PC or the Mac, but it is still working on the iPads.  When we turn home sharing on, the home sharing icon shows in the sidebar, but as soon as we put in the login and password and click "Done," the home sharing icon disappears.  The Mac and PC are linked up, as we can see the shared library in the "Finder" on the Mac, but it is inaccessible from iTunes.
We've tried all the trouble-shooting we can find online, including disabling the IPv6 on the PC, but still nothing.  Any suggestions  to get this working again would be appreciated!

How do you access the HD from both Mac and PC?
I do this but only by network not direct hookup.
If you are plugging the HD into one or the other I may have a solution for you.
I have all my photos in folders organized the way I want them.
Then I set iPhoto to NOT import the files when I add them.
Preferences > Advanced > make sure the selection of "Importing: Copy items to the iPhoto Library" is not selected.
That way the photos (files) will stay where you put them and the data in iPhoto will still organize and do it's thing on them.
And if you modify a photo with say Photoshop the new file seems to automatically update in the preview of iPhoto.
    Works great for me.
Here is what I have been doing...
    1. When I got my MAC, I copied all of my pictures from my PC onto a portable HD (WD passport).
    2. Then I attached it to the MAC and used iPhoto.
    3. I added new photos only to the passport HD and edited them in iPhoto.
What I was _planning / hoping_ to do is move those photos back to the PC for use in other applcations. But apparently the editted photos aren't on the HD anyway, but on the MAC (in the iPhoto library.)
But I understand that using a referenced library is not a great idea.
(Also, initially I did copy some photos into iPhoto and apparently having a both managed AND a referenced set of files is DOUBLY bad!)
So what I need to do now is fix whatever I "broke" and get a plan to go forward!

  • Installation Icon Disappears w/out installing w/out error msg

64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 on an ASUS laptop.  First noticed a problem with itunes - saying 'itunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration.'
I checked youtube on IE9, and the video and audio were fine.  On Chrome however, youtube gave me a msg about needing to install flash player.  Firefox gave me a msg about the plug-in for Shockwave being vulnerable and in need of updating.   I never bothered to check any version numbers and simply uninstalled Flash entirely using the Flash Uninstaller I downloaded from Adobe.
Now I have no flash player and, although I can run the Flash Installer, nothing ever happens.  If I download the installation executable, and dbl click ite, I get the UAC warning.  Clicking OK makes the icon disappear from my desktop without giving me any error message.
I have attempted to install by downloading and installing using safe mode with networking and gotten the same result.  I even tried first downloading in normal mode, restarting in safe mode, and installing.  The icon still disappears.
I'm not sure what I should be looking for in Event Viewer.
I have run sfc /scannow and no integrity violations were detected
I have run a Quick scan with MS Security Essential, and it was clean.  I am currently 7 minutes into a full scan.
    UPDATE
I saw that a fellow named Mike M replied to another poster just a few hours ago, and his suggetsion was to provide 2 direct install links - 1 for IE and 1 for the other browsers.  The IE install went perfectly, and I can now, once again play youtube videos in IE.  I had less success with the other install.  Firefox 26 gives me an error box about Shockwave not responding, and I can cancel or continue to see if it responds.  Continuing gives me 'An error occurred.  Please try again later'  It is the same video I successfully watched in IE.  Chrome gives me ''The Adobr Flash Player is required for videp playback and provides a link to get the latest Flash Player.  Of course, I thought I had just done that.

Having Flash Player up to date is one part of the battle. The other is Shockwave. If you do interactive stuff like Facebook games, or Pogo, you need to have Shockwave up to date too.
I recommend a "full clean install":
Download the following by right clicking and selecting wither "save target as" (IE) or "Save Link As" (Firefox):
    Flash Player Uninstaller
    Shockwave Player Uninstaller
Flash Player for ActiveX (Internet Explorer)
Flash Player Plug-in (All other browsers)
Shockwave Player 12 FULL Installer (other browsers)
Note: The following isn't a download, It's a link you'll NEED TO visit with IE to get to the Shockwave Player 12 FULL Intsaller (ActiveX for IE)
Save five above files to your Downloads folder. DON'T run anything yet.
    Reboot your system completely.
BEFORE opening anything else, go to your Downloads folder and run the Uninstallers.
Go to: C/Windows/System32 and delete the Macromed folder.
Go to: C/Windows/SysWOW64 and delete the Macromed folder.
Open your Registry Editor (Start>Run or press the Windows key + R and type "regedit" [minus the quotes] then click OK).
In the Registry Editor, go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE and delete the Macromedia folder.
Goto: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software and delete the other Macromedia folder.
Close the Registry Editor and empty your Recycle BIn.
Run the Flash Player ActiveX installer, the Flash Player (other browsers) installer, and the Shockwave FULL installer downloaded previously.
Then open IE and visit the above link to install the ActiveX FULL shockwave plugin. (Note: it says "11" but it's 12)
You've no doubt noticed I mentioned NOTHING about Chrome in all of this.
That's because Chrome uses its own "proprietary" build of Flash Player, and you CAN'T update or reinstall it here.

  • Every time i close my macbook and open it the airplay icon disappears from both the menu bar and itunes

every time i close my macbook and open it the airplay icon disappears from both the menu bar and itunes or i get an error when i try to use it
do you know why and how to solve this problem?

    Hi Colin,
A couple of things you can try:
Open System Preferences and click on Network. Click on the small gear icon below the list of connections and select Set Service Order. Move your AirPort connection up to the top of the list so it will be first in line when your computer searches for connections. (It's probably looking for ethernet connections first..the normal default..and finding none, it then looks for wireless. This takes time.
Click on your AirPort connection again to highlight it and then click Advanced in the lower right of the pane. Make sure your wireless network is at the top of the list. Delete other networks that you don't need.
Finally, make sure there is a check mark in the box next to "Remember any network this computer has joined".
See if one of these actions will help.

  • 'NETWORK' ICON IN 'MY COMPUTOR' MISSING IT'S IMAGE ..?

    Hi
my network icon image is missing when i open 'my computor'.
Only the title 'network' is visible.
It's always like this, even after restarts and repaired permissions.
The network icon does appear whole in the finder menu bar.
    Any ideas anyone???
    Thanks
    didier

    Hi didier!
That seems to be one of the great "Mysteries"!
Mine behaves the same way, although a restart will return it, only to disappear again. I don't have a clue what makes it run away from home.
The issue has been discussed here before, without any resolution that I know of.
It used to bother me, but as I'm not on a Network, I just decided to forget about it.
I do know that if once you get it to reappear, and then, keep the "My Computer" Finder window open at all times, the Network icon will not take a vacation.
I used to keep in as small as possible, in the bottom left corner of my screen, but as it's absence didn't create any operating problems, I finally quit doing that as well.
Although it doesn't bother me anymore, I'd still like to know what causes the icon to become the "Invisible Man".

  • Re: Network icon greyed out in taskbar

For some reason, when if I right-click on the taskbar and select properties - turn system icons on and off -, the network icon is greyed out..
    How can I enable it?
    What I've tried so far:
    - Local Group Policy Editor
    - Modify reg file
    Details of what I tried:
    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19085-system-icons-enable-disable.html

Thank you for these suggestions, JoeLouis.
Before I go any further I would like to mention a few details:
    (1) the same issue affects the "notification" icon. It is also greyed out.
    (2) Even when I click on "always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar", the network and notification icons do not show up.
    (3) I bought the laptop 2 weeks ago and I set the OS back to before the very first software I installed. No difference.
    (4) I reinstalled the LAN driver yesterday. No difference
Under "notification area icons" if I "hide icons and notifications" for the network, and then reselect "show icon and notifications" I see the following message: This notification icon is not currently active. It will be shown the next time it become active. Not sure if this is a generic windows message or if it is specific to my problem.
If I apply Microsoft Fix it for system icons (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945011/en-us) the network and notification icons completely disappear from the "notification area icons" list. This may indicate a registry issue.
    Thank you.

  • Airplay icon disappears from iTunes

    Hi,
I recently bought an Airport Express (last generation) to be able to hear my iTunes music collection on my stereo. The Airport Express is connected to my home router via ethernet cable (WiFi is disabled) and is configured to only work as an Airplay device. It works flawlessly from my iPhone and iPad, either using the builtin iOS music app, Spotify, or any other app that supports Airplay.
But that's not the case with iTunes on my PC (Windows 8.1). The Airplay icon keeps disappearing from iTunes and the only way I can get it back is by disconnecting the ethernet cable from the Airport Express and connecting it again. There are two situations where the Airplay icon disappears. One is if I put the computer to sleep. When it wakes up the Airplay icon is gone and I can't get it back unless I disconnect the ethernet cable (or reset the Airplay). But sometimes I'm hearing some music via PC, then switch to Spotify on the iPad, and when I get back to the PC the Airplay icon turns orange and I can't connect to the Airport Express. Then it disappears. It doesn't always happen.
I've already tried every solution that I read in these forums but nothing works. I've disabled the windows firewall, disabled IPv6, configured the Airport Express with a fixed IP address, etc. etc. Nothing seems to work. The only thing I haven't tried is connecting my PC and Airpor Express via WiFi to the router, because my PC is a desktop and doesn't have an WiFi card. Right now it is connected via ethernet cable to the same router as the Airport Express, so it shouldn't be a problem, I guess.
Can anyone please give me any advice? I'm really frustrated, because having to disconnect the network cable from the Airport Express every time I turn on my computer so I can hear to some music is very annoying.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Best regards,
    Pedro

Hello, I have this exact same problem -- Airport Express bought Feb. 2014 (not sure of firmware version?) Windows 8 PC, multiple iPads, iPhones in home. Wireless provider Comcast in S.F. Bay Area (using their Xfinity modem / router) extremely reliable and very fast for 10+ years.
Every few days Airport Express icon in iTunes on Windows PC turns orange and requires PC reboot. Upon reboot, streaming music works fine. Have also tried all other fixes found on Support forums, etc.
On iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4S and both iPad 2s Airport Express icon is always available and always seems to work fine.
Strangely enough, after replacing iPhone 3GS with iPhone 5s (yesterday!), Airport Express was not available on new iPhone, but after quick reboot of Airport Express, new iPhone was able to stream music...
Windows 8, iTunes, etc. updated w/ latest versions, etc.
Definitely a pain having to re-boot PC every few days to re-connect to Airport Express...

  • Airplay icon disappears after I click 'Play'

My Airplay icon disappears from my iTunes window whenever I click play.  I usually stream music from iTunes on my Mac Book Air to an Airport Express connected to my stereo.  It's been about a week since I last played music to the stereo, and I can't get it to work.
    Symptoms:
    - When I click 'play' in iTunes main window, the Airplay icon disappears.
    - 'Remote' will not play to the Express.  The icon also disappears from view after clicking play.
    - If I switch to the mini-player after launching iTunes, I can play to the Express. Returning to main window and clicking play causes icon to disappear.  Quitting ater selecting Airplay from mini player and relaunching iTunes has no effect; the icon disappears from main view once I click play.
    Things I've tried:
    - Soft restart on base station and express
    - Pulled the plug from base station and express, waited a few minutes, then powered up
    - turned 'Enable Airplay' off (update), then on again (second update) on the express
    - Restarted my Mac
    - Turned on/off home sharing in iTunes
    - Cursed and listened to local radio stations
    Software/Hardware:
    Mac OSX 10.9.2
    iTunes 11.1.5 (5) 64bit
    Airport Utility 6.3.2
    Mid-2011 MacBook Air 11", i7
    Airport Extreme (2007/8?)
    Airport Express (bought 12/13)

Hi Griff, thanks for the links.
I started my day this morning by shutting down my MBA for a few minutes.  This seems to have fixed the problem.  Because the previous restarts didn't have an effect, I'm wondering if the cause may have been related to a hardware cache (?) of some sort.  I've been using screen shares (Skype, WebEx, GoToMeeting) alot recently, which may have something ot do with this.  I read elsewhere that the disappearing icon is frequently related to a network problem.
In anycase, I can listen to *my* music tongiht.
