Network icon in Finder not functional

I have an Intel Mac Mini Core 2 Duo w/OS X 1.4.10.
My Network icon shows up in Finder just fine. BUT, below that it only shows three folders
Applications
Library
Users
I can't see or browse my network at all. I can click on Go --> Connect To Server and manually do it, but I would rather have the option to see all the machines on my network. I have tried removing and re-adding the Network icon in Finder | Preferences. I have done a killall -HUP Finder.
I tried deleting all of those folders. Now my Network is empty, at least according to the OS X point of view.
On the flip side, I know Samba is working because I can browse the Mac from all my PC's.
Does any of you Mac guru's know what's going on? I know *nix and I know Windows. Mac's are fairly new to me...
Thanks

username/password - I inherited this machine so yes, I am pretty sure I might have done that. Would it be easier to create another user and that way the preferences would be "fresh"?
Hey, great idea for a test!
I saw in that other Network folder problem thread about deleting a file called com.apple.systempreferences (or something very similar). Would that help?
The partial list of filesfolders I've seen cause problems are...
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
/Users/nnnnLibrary/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/SystemConfiguration/
I haven't been using it very long so configuring settings over again isn't a big issue.
If User settings aren't the problem... doesn't look like it to me so far, then an Archive and Install from your Install CD/DVD might be the trick.
P.S. Should I have to recreate the Network folder after reboot? applejack didn't recreate it if it was supposed to...
No, Applejack doesn't create anything... the OS should re-create that Network stuff once it reboots and finds none... maybe you have to toggle/do some Network stuff afterwards... not sure... still a bit blown away that what I did to fix the problem in several instances like yours... came up empty on your end!

  • Intermitent Eject symbol by Network icon in Finder pane

Please can anyone tell me why sometimes (and only sometimes) I get an eject symbol next to the network icon in the left pane of Finder windows?
    Pressing it does nothing.
I wouldn't say I connect to a network but maybe I do and misunderstand the terminology - I use Airport to connect to a wireless internet router. There is one other computer that connects to the same router also wirelessly.
Airport also occasionally shows other wireless networks as well as mine, presumably from adjacent properties.
My only real concern would be if it meant other people were accessing my computer somehow via the 'network'.
I'm nearly always connected to the internet (when I'm logged into the computer) and it isn't a case that the symbol is there whenever I'm online and not when I'm not (although the latter could be true).
It seems odd that the eject symbol's appearance seems random and doesn't relate to when the other PC using the same router is/isn't online.

The eject button next to the Network icon is a bug. It shouldn't be there. I've been waiting for it to be fixed for over a year.
On the other hand, it is harmless. When you are actually connected to another machine via any one of many networking protocols, it will show up in the sidebar with it's own (functional) eject button.
If you have file sharing turned off and/or have the firewall turned on, you need not worry about others accessing your computer remotely.

  • Why are my firefox icons and tabs not functioning properly?

My firefox is not functioning properly since Monday. I have tried uninstalling and installing firefox but the problem is still there when I open it. Please help.

Unfortunately, the most likely explanation is an incompatibility with your graphics card/chipset driver software. One of the effects of Safe Mode is to disable Firefox from using hardware acceleration. To turn that feature off in normal mode as well:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"
This takes effect the next time you exit Firefox and start it up again. Any difference?

  • My macbook pro 15 inch freezes up. I forced a shutdown. After reboot, system restarted to factory settings, applications/softwares disappeared, apple dropdown menu disabled, dock and icons missing, keyboard not functioning

Hi. I'm in need of great help as I do not understand how this could have happened.
I had my firefox on, with multiple tabs and windows as I was doing intense research for a paper. My screen then freezes up, but my mouse could still work. Having experienced this before, I immediately pressed and hold the power button till my macbook pro shuts down.
After which, I switched it back on. To my horror, everything was resetted to factory settings: my desktop background was replaced, the fonts on the clock display were different. But this wasn't so bad.
After which, I realised that my dock went missing, together with the icons. I clicked the apple drop down menu, and my screen hanged momentarily, and in that moment everything on the screen disappeared (including the upper dock) for a few seconds and appear again. Meaning, i cant click the drop down.
Similar thing happened with my spotlight. Using the hot keys command-space, the dropdown appeared on the top right, but when i started to type, the screen disappeared and appeared again like before.
Finally i checked my applications folder, and it seems like all the applications are missing, like they have never been installed before! Their folders are there, but the icons and apllications themselves aren't. No applications/software installed- not even the utilities and system preference softwares that came with the macbook.
Luckily though, all my documents are safe. I just cant open them because my iworks and adobe are all missing and "not installed". I cant even access the internet. I'm doing this via my iPhone.
So basically i cant do anything because my apple drop down menu is unreachable, so is my spotlight, and my apps/softwares like system preference, utility are all missing. Is there a way i can troubleshoot this? Or make my macbook work again? I have already restarted and shutdown and switch it back on again near five times.
I know my explanation is long, but do help me if you can. I'm really at a lost right now...

    Hi
Thanks for the help. I did what you advised, but it still did not work.
The repair disk was successful. Unfortunately when the system restarted to boot my startup disk, I faced the exact same problems as I did previously. I also did a hardware test, but no problems were found.
Even tried powering off and on the macbook pro again but the same problems remained...
I tried to back-up my files too but they refuse to copy/move into my hard disk drive folder.
    Nothing works.
Do you have other ideas? Or suggestions?
    Thanks so far!

  • IPod icon on finder, not in iTunes

When I connect my iPod to my iMac, I get a message which reads: "iTunes cannot read the contents of (this) iPod. Go to the summary tab in iPod preferences and click restore to this iPod to restore this iPod to factory settings." Problem is, it doesn't appear in the preferences menu, or in iTunes...so how can I restore it?

i seem to have sorted my problem. i went into spotlight, and searched for 'ipod'. my mac found a folder called 'ipod software updater'. i clicked on this and clicked on the most recent ipod update. reset the ipod to factory settings, and then asked it to open itunes once it had done this. My mac thought it was a brand new ipod and itunes detected it straight away. wierd huh??

  • On a wireless network test report, I get "The wireless radio is not functioning."

The printer is a Photosmart C309a all-in-one.  I've used this printer for some time and did so wirelessly earlier today.  Upon ordering a print job the printer failed to produce results.  I ran a Network Configuration Page where it showed the printer to be offline with no Active Connection Type.  I then ran a Wireless Network Test report and received the message: "The wireless radio is not functioning.  Contact HP Support."  IS THERE A FIX FOR THIS?
I reinstalled the printer software on my computer configuring it with a USB connection, in order to be able to use the printer.  I was able to use it with the USB connection but would most definitely prefer a wireless connection.  I also turned off the printer, router and computer and turned them on in the order outlined in the user's manual, but to no avail.  This, of course, I did before reinstalling the software for a USB connection.

    Hi,
I afraid the error indicate an an hardware failure..
You may try using a wired ethernet cable as a workaround, the printer will need to be services in order to repair its wireless card.
You may find the details to contact HP support by selecting your region and following Technical Support after you buy:

  • TS1398 I have an iPad mini, because of my work network firewalls I am not able to use the airprint function to print. I was told you can direct connect to a printer. I am not sure how as I have not seen any cables for a lightning connection to a printer c

I have an iPad mini, I am connected to my work wireless connection. My printer also is on the same wireless network, however I am not able to print to my airprint enabled printer through this wireless connection. Is there a way to direct connect to the printer via a cable ?
I am missing something here on the connection. I am thinking possibly a firewall here at work will not allow me to use the airprint function. Help ?

There is no support for wired printing.
It is probably a firewall issue, possibly where all inbound communications are blocked. Since you're at work, I'd call your work IT department and find out from them what you can/can't do.

  • Network in Finder not displaying networks.

    Hey,
I seem to have developed a problem with Network in my Finder. Restarting does not seem to rectify it nor does removing the icon and replacing it.
Basically when I click on network in the finder (or even via the go menu), instead of being shown the different networks available I am shown the Applications, Library and User Folders of my username.
Why would this be happening and how do I get back to seeing my actual network options?
    Thanking you mucho.

hello and hello... no new settings were applied to either of the Macs being used... we have been having problems with our ISP... our ADSL speed has been really slow over the past fortnight which has resulted in BT changing our profile to a very small one. By Friday we were told that it appears our modem is disconnecting from the ADSL connection all the time. Yesterday I went and exchanged it for another brand and after having some MTU problems, everything now seems to be fine. It appears therefore that that was a modem issue which was affecting our networking.
If it reoccurs I will let you know.
    Thanks for the help though.

  • JCO.Server could not find server function 'CONTROL_RECIPE_AVAILABLE'

    Hi Experts,
I've been trying to read some of the topics in the forums to find answers about the error JCO.Server could not find server function but still haven't resolve the issue.
Basically, the scenario is from SAP r/3 to PI 7.1 ehp1 (process integration) system.
All of the aforementioned steps we're done.
    R/3 (SAP) end
    1.) Create RFC destination (T)
    2. ) Indicate the program ID
    3.) Indicate the server/hostname
    4.) Indicate the sap gateway
Test connection was made and it was successful.
    SAP PI end.
Integration Directory (Let me skip from the basics and state directly the setup of my senderRFC)
1.) RFC Comm Channel (set as Sender)
2.) Indicated the server hostname (sending system), sap gateway and Program ID (basically what was indicated in RFC setup in SAP end)
3.) RFC Metadata Repository Parameters (In here I used the details of PI environment)..Created user with SAP_ALL profile..I used system without Load Balancing (Parameter, AppServer, SysNo, Logon User, Logon Password, Language and Client)
I was able to test a message from SAP end but still "JCO.Server could not find server function" was the result upon checking sm58.
Did I miss something from my setup and config?

    Hi Michal,
I guess there's a big difference with RFC Server Parameters and with RFC Metadata Repository Parameters.
Note: Im using PI 7.1 ehp1
For RFC Server Parameters it includes:
    - Application Server (gateway)*
    - Application Server Service (gateway)*
    - Program ID*
For RFC Metadata Repository Parameters it includes:
    - Load Balancing or no Load Balancing (choices)..in here my choice is no Load Balancing
    - Application Server*
    - System No*
    - Logon Language*
    - Logon Client*
    - Authentication Mode (Use Log-on Data for SAP System or Secure Network Connection for RFC)
if Use Log-on Data for SAP System it includes:
    - Logon User*
    - Logon Password*
If Secure Network Connection for RFC it includes:
    - Quality of Protection
    - SNC Partner Name
Looked onto your blogs mentioned several times, but no information on RFC Metadata Repository Parameters.

  • Network Icon Not Responding

I click on Finder and then Computer. Within Finder, I see an icon for my hard drive and network. However, when I click on the icon, I get no response. I don't seem to have a problem if I click the network icon in the sidebar or from the Go menu and then Network.
One other note, the network icon looks like a folder. It no longer looks like a globe or ball.

    Hi,
Please reinstall your network adapter driver to check the result.

  • The wi-fi button on my iPad 2 is not functioning.  I have tried resetting the network, worked for 5 minutes. Am not able to connect to internet to reset to factory.  What else can I do?

The wi-fi button on my iPad 2 is not functioning.  I have tried resetting the network, worked for 5 minutes. Am not able to connect to internet to reset to factory.  What else can I do?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at
    http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Accidentally removed my Network icon in my finder

I accidentally removed my Network icon from the finder panel. Anyway I can't get it back now and when I Apple K, I can't locate anything on the network anyway the only way to do this was to use the network icon when it was in the left area on the panel.
    any ideas please?

I think this works in 10.4 (but not in 10.5)
Click on the Desktop then top left Finder/Preferences
Check the 'Computer' item at the top then close the Preferences and open a new Finder window
Your computer 'name' should then be at the top of the left sidebar
Click on it and you should then see your hard drive and 'Network'
Drag 'Network' to the left sidebar
