Network Identifying . . . . (stuck forever)

I have a two node Windows 2012 R2 cluster hosting Hyper-V guests. All server assets are virtualized including DNS, AD and DHCP and running as guest VMs. AD is hosted on Windows 2012 that has been recently upgraded to Windows 2012 R2. All computers
are fully patched and updated.
Its a single subnet private class C network with a dual NIC TMG host providing connectivity to internet. This TMG host is default gateway for all internal assets.
Recently (after upgrading AD host from Windows 2012 to Windows 2012/R2, but not sure if it related) servers are getting stuck on networking and network getting stuck on Identifying . . . and network access (RDP) is denied. Behavior
make sense that access is denied while server is evaluating the network. What makes it frustrating it cannot identify the network and stays in "Identifying" mode. One workaround I found is to use Hyper-V console logon to the machine,
disable and re-enable the NIC - and this is a manual intervention not a solution.
I tried bunch of different things but none sticking (temporarily feels like it problem is fixed but then it comes back in hours or days). I have not experience this issue on desktops connecting to the same network over wired or WiFi connection.
Things that I tried include:
Rebooting (yep!)
Removing the vNIC and adding back in again
disabling VMQ (Virtual Machine Queue) and twiddling NIC settings (physical network is attached to a 1 GB Dell Layer 3 Switch)
Removing virtual switch, re-creating and attaching the NICs to new virtual switch
Removing all VLANs - no VLANs physical or virtual
Changing the GPO (GPO -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Network List Manager Policies )
Cleaning up (uninstalling) dead (old) NICs hidden in host device manager on VMs
Stopping windows firewall on servers.
Tried different suggestions that I found on internet (but they are mostly related to time prior to Windows 2012)
Re-validated Windows 2012 R2 based cluster configuration
This behavior is more prevalent on Windows 2012/R2 machines than on Windows 2008 hosts.
There is something obvious that I am missing or its a new feature/bug? Temporarily I changed the definition of Identifying network from "public" to "private" but that's not how I want to keep it (security!!).
Any suggestions? How do I make NIC identify the network and get out of this
Identifying . . . state?

Update:
I build a new clean windows 2012 R2 from RTM and applied all updates and patches. All along machine was able to see the network without any problem.
Next I domain joined the machine and boom!! it broke network to Identifying  . . .
So obviously there is something on AD/GPO that is effecting the machine behavior. Not so much of a AD/GPO expert but I tried and exhausted what I can think of.
Next to eliminate further, I created a new OU, moved the machine into newly created OU and in GPO Editor Blocked Inheritance. Gave it sometime. few GPUPDATE /FORCE and reboots. Now I am getting clean network and not
Identifying anymore.
I will be moving few other 2012/R2 VMs into newly created GPO-blocked OU and hoping to see the Identifying to go away for the moved machines. I will report update later in the forum.
Until then would be great if some can point me to how to fix/correct the Network Location setting in GPO.
----------------------- Oct 19, 2014 Update----------------
Having the machines out in newly created OU worked as long as GPO inheritance is blocked. This seems to be effecting Windows 2012 (R2) machines.
So the question is how to "educate" Network Location Identifying process that it is connected to right network? It gets pretty painful when a machine like DC or TMG is restarted and its waiting on
Identifying requiring a manual intervention (not through RDP but using Hyper-V console to recycle the Network Adapter (disable/enable) to find itself.
This troubleshooting took away my weekend, I have a solution but solution is not making me feel good or feeling I learned something new. :-(

Please note this issue is not with one single VM. This is the behavior on all Windows 2012/R2 VMs. Or at least I am focused in Windows 2012 R2 computers.
I think I am up to something, means to a solution that I will post back later (once I have more confidence into it)
In GPO, there is nothing in [Computer configuration-->administrative templates-->network-->DNS client]. Anything that I had I removed it and all settings are default (i.e. Not Configured).
Below at the end is the output of IPCONFIG /ALL. This is from a VM that is getting IP from DHCP. There are five other machines with static IP addresses from the same subnet. Also note that DHCP is running off the same VM that is hosting DNS (and AD) which
to my understanding means it is finding the network services fines.

  • Network Install stuck at apple gray screen

    Hi,
I set up 1 IMac and make a network install image of it by booting the IMac as target mode, then run system image utility to create the network install.
Then i turn on netboot and i tried to boot the other IMac that connected to the network via netboot so it'll be installed and configured as the initial IMac. However it stuck at the grey screen for 30 minutes.
    Am I doing something wrong?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Sumomo

Sounds like the issue we're having over in the System Imaging forum
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=929625&tstart=0
there's a solution that seems to work for most people and that's to manually copy CoreVideo.framework in to the image. Details under the link.

  • After upgrading to 8.1, my network is stuck in "Extended" instead of "Verizon." Battery life is also POOR now

How do I get it back to Verizon? Tried all the usual fixes, aka resetting network settings etc. Also, my battery life is now VERY POOR. Please help! It seems both Verizon and Apple do not know who is to blame for this issue, as each blames it either on the carrier or the software update. Currently, there seems to be only a fix for the iphone 6. Thank you!

I've done a network reset several times. I've had the phone a few months in the same area with no previous network or battery life issues. I am in the middle of very large city with full Verizon coverage, and have been since I owned the phone. It has been stuck on extended since I upgraded, and my room mate who has not upgraded is still on "Verizon," so I know outages are not the issue. I am very good about closing apps. I have done the routine battery usage fixes, such as turning off background refresh, turning off auto-brightness, turning off certain notifications, disabling spotlight search, etc.
Also interesting to note that my usage percentages are now in the 25%+ range for both messages and safari (this is with minimal usage, on a good wifi network!) and 12-18% for home and lock screen. The rest of the usages are in single digit percentages.

This is caused by bash and not by sed. Bash 3.1 shipped FC5 is buggy.
So download bash-3.0 from FC4 and install it using "rpm -ivh ... --force" command.

  • Checkpoint SSL Network extender stuck on Java applet when using firefox 4.0.1

I use check point SSL network extender on my mac to access my company's VPN. Since upgrading to 4.0.1, I get the message "Please confirm the use of this Java applet and then refresh or reopen the window.
If you have already disapproved using this applet, you might need to restart your browser before attempting to connect again"
I'll accept, refresh, wait, and then the message comes back. I never get through. I just uninstalled 4.0.1 and went back to 3.6.17 and it's working fine on the old version.

The first thing I notice is that you are using Firefox 4 and that is now out of date, it is not considered secure so it would make sense to upgrade to Firefox 5 (Or Firefox 6 if you read this after the 16th)
You mention Firefox 3.6.17, and although Firefox 3.6 is still (for possibly only a limited time) supported I believe the current version is 3.6.20 (it is certainly at least 3.6.18) so again you are using an out of date version. I am not a Mac user but IIRC some of the recent updates were Mac specific and fixed Mac problems, possibly problems relating to Java.
If you wish to use more than one version of Firefox to test problems developers tend to use separate profiles and custom installs but for ordinary users it may be worth considering firefox [http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable portable] versions. (that tip is applicable mainly to Windows users, no doubt there is also a poratable version for firfox5 Mac users somewhere)

  • H420 Network Speed Stuck at 100mps on 1gps network

I have a Lenovo H420 with a 1gbs network card.  I believe the NIC is an Intel 82579v.  I am using Windows 7 Ultimate x86.  I have not updated anything other than the operating system.  I did this insure compatibility with some equipment that doesn't support Windows 64 bit system.
My H420 will only operate at 100mps.  All my other computers on the network operate at 1gps, with the exception of this one.
    How can I fix this?

Have you checked in the Network Cards settings and tried forcing it to run 1GB Full Duplex?
Also an old or slow Cat cable can do this to. Try a different cable out and see.
Best speed on gigabit can be reached with CAT5e and/or CAT6.
    Hope this helps.

  • AFP accessing network folders taking forever to load

    Hi all,
Im using a macbook air for work and connecting to our cloud server using OpenAFS, etc.
So as the IT company we use at work have never set up accessing the cloud via a mac before, I am effectively a guinea pig for them and our company (as the rest of the staff want to move to macs).
Now, after i "buy tokens" I can acces the AFS drive no problem. I can then view my first layer of folders.
    which is fine.
But then after I try to go further into the sub folders, it takes AGES, to the point where I think it time outs.
Im running Mac OS X 10.6.7....
So the furthest I have been able to get to is the first layer of folders.....which is no good.
Not being an IT person myself, I am at a lose to what I can do to improve the situation.
    Help please.....

If you do go this route make sure to do it all at once.
I think I might have waited between tries but can really remember, it was a long time ago and I try to keep better back-ups now.

    Hi Glenn,
Thanks so much for your responses,
"I then froze the drive and as soon as I took it out started copying the files to a new drive.
Running CPU-Z or Speccy I could monitor the temp of the drive.  As the temp went back up the speed of the drive slowed till I could not copy any more.  I just repeated and kept going till I got all the data off.
I still have the drive but even freezing cant geet it back up and running now.
Its not a good meathod since it will ruin your drive but its free and might work."
Sorry I ma not reallt sure on the internal worksings of HDDs, can ask you to explain what this is?
    Thanks again for your help

  • ExecuteQuery gets stuck  forever, sporadically

I have a table t with around 160K records. I need to pull out all the rows an pack them in files each files with a maximum of 50K records.
The following code is called (standard pagination) with page size = 10000. That means, this code needed to be called 16 times to archive whole table into files.
    query = "select  from (select t_name, row_number() over (order by t_timestamp asc) rn from t where t_id = ? and t_timestamp between ? and ?) where rn between ? and ?";               try{ conn = DriverManager.getConnection(url, user, pass); pstmt = conn.prepareStatement(query); pstmt.setFetchSize(10000); pstmt.setLong(1, t_id); pstmt.setDate(2, fromDate); pstmt.setDate(3, todate); pstmt.setLong(4, startIdx); pstmt.setLong(5, endIdx); rs = pstmt.executeQuery(); while(rs.next()){ /**get the rows and pack in ovo object*/ lst.add(ovo); } }catch{                             /*catch code*/                 }finally{   /* Clean up the resources */ try{ if(pstmt!=null) { pstmt.close(); } if (rs != null) { rs.close(); } if(conn!=null) { conn.close(); } }catch(Exception e){ /*catch code*/ } }
This code is a part of a stand-alone application. The query is pretty fast.
The problem is, the thread hangs at
    pstmt = conn.prepareStatement(query);
    without any error.
And this happens sporadically (some of the 16 calls fail). There is no hanging query when we see from DB side. Looks like the thread has gone in idle state. No garbage collection trace is printed.
This process fails with (connection timeout)
    at oracle.jdbc.driver.SQLStateMapping.newSQLException(SQLStateMapping.java:74)
I considered following possibilities and added fix for that none worked:
    1. There might be resource crunch. So, made sure preparedStatement and resultset are closed explicitly as well.
    2. tested with setQueryTimeout.
    3. added System.gc() before each call.
    4. using pooled and non-pooled connections
    Not sure what's wrong.

    Tolls wrote:
I wouldn't expect high memory usage, but I would expect something along the lines of a connection timeout...maybe.
Still, rereading your OP I would also expect it to hang at the getConnection() rather than the following executeUpdate(), so it's possibly not resource leaking.
Have you tried over at OTN? [Found this post from a couple of months back.|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=922664&tstart=0]
    Thanks for the link.
The weirdest thing is, If I do something like this
                            pstmt.setQueryTimeout(30);
                            System.out.println("Before");
                   rs = pstmt.executeQuery();
System.out.println("After");The iteration which the code fails in, three things happen:
    1. "Before" gets printed but not "After".
    2. No timeout happens after 30 seconds. In fact, the timeout takes place after 90 minutes. (may be the default connection timeout)
    3. there is no active query when seen from DBA tool.
I am wondering if some particular resource gets unavailable like socket or something, not sure though. Neither the error indicates that.

Hey everyone - I hope you can help..
I have an iPhone4 which has been unlocked by my carrier... I rang my carrier and they say they have confirmed with Apple that it is now unlocked
I've put in the new Sim from a different carrier, however it wouldn't work.. Got an error saying its not supported and couldn't get any signal. As from the other threads i've read i tried to restore the phone with the new sim.. Got to the activation and phone still tells me the sim is not supported.. need to get a sim from a supported carrier etc etc. Put my old sim back in and it activated fine.. Tried restore again with new sim and still says not supported.. Any ideas??

Phone wasn't jailbroken or anything before and carrier says its unlocked.. The didn't send me instructions or anything but they told me what to do over the phone.. Its the message 'Congratulations. Your iPhone is unlocked' that i'm not getting.. Driving me mad so it is!!
    So here's what i'm doing:
Have my phone with my old carrier sim in it.. works fine..
Connected to itunes and showing up ok.. Backed it up..
Swapped out the simcards to put in my new sim card..
Hit Restore..let phone do its thing and restore
getting to the activation and get a message saying this sim is not supported and need to get a sim from a supported carrier...
If i put my old sim back in then it will activate!

  • TAP driver / identified vs unidentified networks

Hi.  I'm running Win7 build 7000, trying to get both my OpenVPN connection and my coLinux connection (TAP-Win32 v9.0.0.4 and 8.0.0.4 respectively) to be identified as Home networks.
Currently they each show as "Unidentified network" / "Local only" (sometimes even as participating in the same unidentified network.)  "Local only" is correct, as I don't want to use them as default routes; and I certainly care that I can't name them, but I would like to figure out how to set things up so that I don't have to mark them as Home/Private networks every boot.
What makes a network "unidentified"?  Absence of a gateway? dhcpv6?  I tried adding a connection-specific DNS suffix to each :)
    What makes a network identifiable?
Thanks in advance for any information,

    Hi
Use this powershell script it makes necessary changes in registry i found it on the web looking for solution to the same problem under vmware network adapters and modified it to work with tap open vpn devices.
    # see http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb201634.aspx
    # *NdisDeviceType
    # The type of the device. The default value is zero, which indicates a standard
    # networking device that connects to a network.
    # Set *NdisDeviceType to NDIS_DEVICE_TYPE_ENDPOINT (1) if this device is an
    # endpoint device and is not a true network interface that connects to a network.
    # For example, you must specify NDIS_DEVICE_TYPE_ENDPOINT for devices such as
    # smart phones that use a networking infrastructure to communicate to the local
    # computer system but do not provide connectivity to an external network.
    # Usage: run in an elevated shell (vista/longhorn) or as adminstrator (xp/2003).

  • Formatting SSD takes forever (stuck)

So, I put a new SSD in my MacBook Pro (13", early 2011). Worked fine, formatted it and launched the restore. The problem was (I found out a day later) the backup drive was connected by USB before start up. Turns out, it copies at USB 1.1 speeds if done so, so the restore would take 4 days! I canceled the restore and tried again. But this time the erasing seemed to be stuck. After about 4 hours I canceled the restore again, to try formatting manually. Also manually formatting, by both Disk Utility or Terminal, seems to be stuck. Even after 6 hours the process was still at 50%. Trying to create a Logical Volume on the SSD returned an error: "unable to unmount the Disk", but when using the 'diskutil unmountDisk' command it unmounted just fine! Also, the S.M.A.R.T.-status is verified and checking the disk doesn't return any error. What could be the problem?
The SSD is a Crucial M500 480GB and is installed in the normal hard drive bay.

No, I just use normal formatting. I tried both erase and partitioning. Neither worked. Also, creating a Logical Volume on just the current (corrupt) partition (disk0s2) seems to unmount the disk fine, but also gets stuck forever in formatting.
