Network Imac OS9 to G4 OS X

Can anybody tell me how to network my two macs. 1st mac G4 Da running OSX 10.4.8. 2nd mac iMac G3 running OS9.2. I need the iMac to print to a Iris printer through the G4, as the G4 has the scsi connection for the printer. Or does anyone know how Ican connect the iMac directly to the scsi port of the Iris?

I
need the iMac to print to a Iris printer through the
G4, as the G4 has the scsi connection for the
printer.
There is nothing built into OS X to make that
possible.
OS X's printer sharing is NOT
compatible with OS 9's printer sharing therefore the
iMac running OS 9 will not be able to use the printer
connected to the G4.
Does OS X's printer
sharing support printers connected via
SCSI?
Or
does anyone know how Ican connect the iMac directly
to the scsi port of the Iris?
Not directly. I don't know of any, but there may be a
USB/SCSI adapter. In order for it to work, it would
need the appropriate OS 9 drivers.
Thanks Duane, at the moment every time I need to use the Iris I have to reboot the G4 in OS9. So I am looking for any way to get the Imac to talk to the iris printer, either directly (preferred) via some sort of connection to the printers scsi port or by networking through the G4. The latter as you said is not possible.

How can I transfer photos from my Imac OS9 to a Macbook Pro OS 10 ?

The easiest way is probably to use a USB flash drive (you may have to test whether it is compatible with the Mac OS 9 iMac).
Somewhat more complicated would be to connect the two computers via Ethernet to (the built-in switch of) a broadband router, and then transfer files over the Internet (or a local network).
There are other methods as well (FireWire, CD-R, et cetera), depending upon the exact computer models involved.

  • Networking iMac intel(OSX4.4), iMac CRT(OS9.2), printer, scanner, and cable

I am trying to set up a network with my new iMac Core Duo and my old iMac CRT and a printer and a scanner. I want the printer and scanner to work with both computers, and for the Core Duo to be the one connected with the internet via cable. (My ISP will only allow one computer to be connected.) I also want the two computers to be able to work with each other's files. The Core Duo has OSX 4.4 and the iMac CRT has OS 9.2. Previously, I had two iMac CRT's working on a network as just described. I was using a 5 port hub.
Now, my question is: Can this be done? I have tried everything I could think of, but have had no luck. I can get one or the other computer to work the internet, which is fine, but I can't get them to talk to one another. At one time I managed to get the iMac CRT's icon to appear of the Core Duo's desktop, and could pass stuff one direction, but I could not get the Core Duo's icon to appear on the CRT's desktop.
Another problem: Each computer has a single Ethernet port so I can't tie them together directly and still access the modem. Can I tie the stuff together using Ethernet cables? There are plenty of Ethernet ports available.
Is there some website I can go to to get educated about this?
This is the longest question I have seen on this discussion forum!
    iMac iintel,iMac CRT   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   also, OS9.2

Sounds like you need a router. Connect the modem and the Macs to the router so both of your machines have internet access. The modem will assign a single IP to the router and then the router will assign IPs to the Macs. You can also connect the printer to the router so both machines have access. I'm not sure about the scanner though as I've never seen one with ethernet connections.

  • How can I network my OS9 to my OS 10 computer?

I have two computers on an ethernet network that I want to share files between and share the printer attached to the OS9 computer.
OS 9 computer: Early tangerine Imac running 9.2.2 and the printer is networkable according to the manual
    OS 10 computer G4 running 10.4.8
The computers go to an ethernet hub and the hub attaches to DSL modem. Both computers can access the internet, but can't see one another.
I have tried multiple settings including starting file sharing on both computers, making sure permissions are given, etc. At this point I can't even get the computers to see one another. Is there an article or link that someone can provide that gives a how to?
I have a similar set up in my home office with two os x computers, and all works fine. I just can't figure out how to network these two different operating systems.
    Thanks for any help.

note: the model/os/other details in my profile are from another computer. details of this particular problem listed above. thanks

I haven't looked for a work around because I expected to be able to see the 9.2.2 machine on my network with no problems. That is not the case. So I am trying to figure out if I am missing a setting. After all, I should be able to see a PC on my network, why not a Mac with 9.2.2? I will consider his plan if absolutely necessary although it seems the long way at the moment. I am trying to avoid classic on the new machine as I no longer need it for running applications. Thanks for the suggestion though.
I still believe there is an answer, I just haven't found it. I searched the knowledge base, but never found the subject.

  • Iphone and ipad can find network, iMac and macbook 10.8.2 cannot

Had a network fault. When fault was fixed, ipad/iphone & Dell studio xps laptop reconnected automatically. Imac 2012 and macbook 2010, 10.8.3, can see network but not connect automatically. Tried connecting to network and get message connection timeout has occurred.
    Got connection by;
    Open Network preferences
    Join other network
enter network name select - Security wpa2 personal
    enter network password
However - I need to do this after every sleep/reboot - is there a fix for this?
PS - I noted that I had previously been on WEP security setting and had real problems connecting to external devices consistently, such as epson wireless printer BX935FWD, and Western Digital My Book Live Duo. Since moving onto WPA2, these connection now work consistently, but macbook and imac always need to be forced to connect to network, in manner described above
Does anyone share a similar problem/managed to resolve network issues? - very frustrating.....must be an OSX issue as all other devices connect without issue.

I've managed to download 10.8.2 for my MBP Retina 13.3" but when I try and install I'm told that none of my discs are suitable i.e. Internal solid state drive with 370 GB available, or attached thunderbolt drive.   Meanwhile my iPhoto won't work. This has arisen because I migrated from an older MBP which was already running 10.8.2 and had latest iPhoto onto a factory fresh 10.8.1 machine.

  • Constant Disconnection from Airport Extreme Networked iMac (late 2009)

I keep trying to copy fairly large files (2-7GB) over my Aiport Extreme (latest—5th generation) network from a early 2011 Macbook Pro to a 27" iMac (late 2009), and I keep getting disconnected from the iMac while the file is copying. I've tried repairing permissions on every computer in the house and restarting them, but I'm still having issues. I have no issues copying files to another late 2011 Macbook Pro in the house, so it seems to be happening only when I copy them to the iMac. The iMac is running Snow Leopard and the Macbook Pros are running Lion, so could that have something to do with it?
Additionally, I had been trying a wireless extended network with another previous generation Airport Extreme, but I found the connection wasn't much stronger with the extension, so I've just been leaving the second Airport Extreme unplugged. I've had that unplugged for months and haven't had any issues, so I don't think that's the problem.
I'm hoping this isn't a sign of something being wrong with the Aiport card in the iMac. Anyone have any ideas?

    Bump?

  • File sharing: Need to be able to edit file & save to a shared folder on a different networked iMac's HD

We have new iMac's (running OS X 10.9.1) and they are all on the same network.  There is a folder on computer #1 (folder is named: 2010) with Word & Excel documents in it (we have to use those instead of Pages & Numbers) that needs to be shared and accesible by computer #2.  This has been done successfully.
The problem is:  When I make changes to the files from computer #2 (or if I add a folder), the files are not accesible on computer #1 any longer...you can see there are new files or folders, but you can't interact with them from computer #1 if they were created on computer #2.  From computer #2, I created a folder named "2014 Ledger" in the shared folder, and when I look at the newly created folder on computer #1, it has a red dot with a minus sign in the bottom right?  When I click on it, it gives me an error.
I called Apple Care, but they didn't seem to know how to be able to edit & save a shared file on one computer, but keep the main file saved to the hard drive of the other computer.  We did this for years with our PC's on a network, so I guess I just figured Mac's could do it as well.
Does anyone have any suggestions of how we can access the files on computer #1 after they've been altered and saved or created on computer #2?
These screen shots are from computer #1 (the computer where the folder should be hosted on the hard drive):

    Jens Grotzscherst wrote:
Now I'm unsure if I need to change permissions to the 300GB worth of files on that external drive. (that's question #1.)
If you want to allow anyone accessing as "user" to be able to read or write all files on that volume, you could do that. You should also be able to set the volume attribute to ignore ownership:
    http://www.peachpit.com/guides/content.aspx?g=mac&seqNum=256
If I look at those files from a client machine, logged in as 'user', Finder tells me they belong to 'unknown'.
I imagine that they're owned by a user with a user ID that's not present on that machine.
Question #2: If I understand correctly, the settings on the server's Sharing preferences pane only apply for ACCESS to the shared folder (i.e. they make it possible to log in via AFP).
If that were the case, there would be no need for the "Read & Write" / "Read Only" setting in the Sharing panel.

  • Connecting to leopard 10.5 networked iMac

    Hi,
I've just put in a wireless router and setup a home network. I have an iMac running Leopard (up to date leopard as of 9th Nov 2008) and I have a Macbook Pro running 10.4.11. The iMac is connected wirelessly to the network and can get internet access. The same for the Macbook Pro.
However, they are unable to see each other wirelessly. I can see the network when I connect the Macbook Pro to the router via ethernet cable. But when I go wireless, I cannot see the network or it's shared printer.
I tried opening ports on the router. But no cigar. And I have enabled shared printer access for the iMac.
    Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

    Hi Rodney,
Yes, I have disabled both firewalls on both Macs (tiger and leopard). It's funny, because when I boot up in Windows, I can see the Leopard machine. And when I boot up in Tiger and connect via ethernet, I can see the machine. It's just an issue with the wireless connection and I'm out of options!
    Thanks!

  • Problem updating imac OS9.2 to OSX 10.3

    Hi Everyone,
this is probably old hat, but I can't seem to find the info on the net anywhere so hopefully a know-it-all will stumble across my q.
I have OS9.2 running on an iMac DV(graphite) 500Mhz (I got it about 12mths before OSX came out but never updated). I need to update coz I just can't get software for OS9 anymore. OK, so I updated my firmware to 4.1.2(?), tried to open the installer in OS9 - couldn't open it - so i restarted and held 'c'. Window pops up saying preparing for install of OSX. Asks what language, whirs away then says something along the lines of 'can't install' then quickly flicks to a blue screen with a little clock logo which spins for hrs with nothing happening. Any ideas. Thanks a million.

  • Networking iMac with Windows 8.1

I am running OS X Mavericks 10.9.4.  I have successfully networked both iMac machines with my wife's Windows 8.1 laptop and can successfully share files between all three computers with only one exception.........The Windows 8.1 machine WILL ALLOW BOTH IMACS TO ACCESS FILES ON IT BUT IT WILL NOT CONNECT TO MY WIFE'S IMAC TO SHARE THE iMAC FILES ON THE PC. Even though both iMacs show up in the PC workgroup, when she tries to connect to her iMac it always returns the error "cannot connect, bad stub" .  Any ideas?
    Thanks

I would try opening File Explorer on Win8.1 and entering the path to a shared folder on the iMac in the address bar. For example
    \\iMacName\Downloads
When you press enter a window should appear asking for credentials. Enter the wife's account name and password. This will either connect to the Downloads folder or fail with an error. So what happens?

  • Trying to network iBook (OS9) w/ G4 running 10.3.9

Some of the other threads on here helped me with the set up but when I make the connecting from the G4 it asks which disk I'd like to mount but gives me no choices. My G4 does not have Classic installed. Is that the reason it can't get anywhere with the iBook? Does anyone have a way that I can connect the two so I can get files off the iBook?
    Thanks!
    Erin

Hi Erin. You don't need Classic, although connecting OS 9 to OS 9 is way smoother and easier.
First you have to start up sharing on both machines: the Tenner in System Preferences>Sharing and the Niner in the FileSharing Control Panel, be sure to check "Enable clients to connect over TCP/IP" on the Niner.
Next you have to allow selected users to connect: When you're having troubles getting set up, it's easiest to allow a user to connect with no Password until you're setup's OK. Alternatively, make both machine's Owner/User and Owner/User's Password exactly (emphasizing "exactly") the same. Later you can change to whatever security complexity gives you comfort. On the Niner this is done in the Users and Groups part of the FileSharing CP: enable Guest or create a User to match a User on the Tenner. On the Tenner in System Prefs>Accounts do the same, but don't create one called Guest UNIX as that would mess up UNIX's existing 'guest' user.
One more thing FWIW: on the Tenner, find Directory Access in Utilities and make sure AppleTalk access is enabled. Ditto in the confusing Network Pane of System Prefs, where you must also make sure you have your internet and ethernet settings enabled.
Finally: make sure you have a functioning physical (OK, wireless will do but you're adding more things for Murphy's Law to act on) connection between the machines. Best would be ethernet wired to a router connected to the internet, and it's what you should aim for in your dream world. That way if each machine can surf da' Weeb, you know the wiring is OK, and Bonus! each will have a static IP address assigned by the router. Once each machine knows its opposite's number, connection's almost easy, and since the IP numbers are static, so is re-connecting
Next best is both separately but simultaneously on the internet. In that case each will have an IP assigned by your internet service provider (usually using DHCP). You can read the Niner's IP addy in the TCP/IP Control Panel and the Tenner's in System Prefs>Network (which is where, if all else fails, you actually turn on AppleTalk) and enable Ethernet (On the Niner that's in AppleTalkCP Connect via: Ethernet)
If you must use AppleTalk because one or both machine lacks an IP addy, be warned that the Tenner hates AT, and that there's really no tinkering I can suggest. It can be made to work; I've done it; I haven't any notion how.
So now: restart both machines, just to make the whole thing a bigger deal, and when they're both up and proven by internet connection, use Chooser (click on AppleShare) or NetworkBrowser (in your Apple Menu) from the Niner and the the Tenner's Finder>Go>Network or Go>Connect to server… menu to see and connect to the other. The usual double clicking on the other puter's icon should make it happen. If it doesn't you may have to enter the target box's IP addy in the appropriate place in Chooser or Servers windows.
Once you have made a connection, you'll find that even having one owner's name and p-word for both doesn't get you clear of X's owner/permissions swamp. The Shared and dropbox folders are the only ones I'd count on being able to access. But you can certainly alter ownerships and such at you own risk. Going the other way, the Owner is the owner, those are your files on the Niner. But any Guests or other Users will need to have access set in the Get info… window of each volume, file or folder using the Sharing drop down. I was once warned never to "…copy these privileges to all enclosed" but I can't say why and I've never felt the need to.
Once you're connected, make aliases of the Tenner's target files on the Niner. Double clicking them later will bring up the connection dialogue window like magic. Sadly, it's positively dangersous to try the operation going the other way as the Tenner will freeze for quite while, searching the known universe for its OS9 buddy, before it tells you there's no such machine known.
If you were bootable in OS 9 on both machines, I'd very strongly urge you to do your transfer that way. Nine was filesharing "for the rest of us", but if this is going to be an ongoing thing (as X most certainly is) then you might as well start tasting the raw computerese the PCPeople have grown up with which is Networking in X. If you can't make it work, I'd suggest a follow-up post in that branch of the Forums, but with the caveat that straight crossposting's not done.
Hope this helps, I had no idea I would run so long. FWIW many have told me 10.2 (Jaguar's) networking was as easy as OS9's used to be, but that 10.3 broke it. So do not give up to soon, many others have shared your frustration.

  • Connecting to existing network iMac to pc's

My church (at my strong urging) dumped their old pc and purchased an intel iMac for our youth group. I have set up the iMac upstairs in the library of the building where we meet. The church office is about ten feet from the building but the library is about 20-30 feet from the office with walls and such in the way. Our old tech guy left the church and I am our new tech guy. The other fellow left zero information. The church is networked together with a bunch of pc's all accessing the internet and printing and all kinds of fun stuff. I just want to connect to the internet with our new iMac from our library. Sometimes the things I read say, "contact your network administrator". I am now the network administrator. We are using xp for the most part in the church but the computer I am typing this on is using 98. (this is why I convinced them to go to a Mac).
The church is connected to the internet via DSL. I do not know the name of our provider, I can only assume it is verizon. I have an Intel PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN Products thing on top of the tower I am using right now (the one with 98) and I thought that I had downloaded the installation disk from the website, but maybe not. The iMac recognizes that there is a signal if I create a network, but I don't want to create a network, I want to join the one th church is using, but I don't even know that name of the network! I know am I not giving you much to go on and this may have more to do with windows than the Mac, but the forums for windows are horrible and I actually wanted good help.
Please, please someone help me. -Nick

So that I get you right, you want to know what is the name of the wireless network you should connect to right?
    1. Find out to which network your Windows PCs are connected.
On Windows Xp you have an wireless icon in the lower right corner on you status bar, if you make a double click on that you will see the status window and there click on the button "show wireless networks" on the next window it shows you the available wireless networks around you and the network you are connected to shows maybe on first place and should show that you are currently connected to this.
There it also shows you the network name.
    2. Once you have the network name you will be able to connect with you iMac -> click on the airport icon in the upper right corner and there it shows you the networks available -> your network name should show there and now you just need to click on it.....
It may asks you for a password which would mean that there is setup a security key in the Router.......
If that is you would need to start to config your router.
    Hope that helped.
If any other questions, come write back, maybe you also can write what kind of router you have.
    Many Greetings from Ireland

  • Missing menu items, iMac OS9 anyone?

I have an old 333MHz iMac, I just installed OS9.2.1 on it but there are some strange problems:
1# There are some missing menu items, like 'Restart', 'Select all' and 'Get info', the keyboard shorcuts don't work for these either.
2# There is a modem in the computer but this does not show up under the 'Apple System Profiler'.

    Hi, Mike -
    You're quite welcome.
When you open the Modem control panel and attempt to connect to the modem, do you get any message indicating the port is already in use? If so, it is probably AppleTalk interfereing - it can do that even if AppleTalk has been turned off. To fix that, in the AppleTalk control panel reset AppleTalk to use a different port - if you need it for the printer, select that; otherwise, select an unused port such as Remote or Ethernet.
It may also help to trash the file ASLM Preferences and restart.
