Network issue Mac PC /wifi / ethernet
Hi all
I'm trying to configue a network but having some problems:
I have buy a NetGear Gs116 switch and conected al the PC an Mac trhu Ethernet cable. Now how i do to make visible mac an pc? none of those are conected to internet just directly to the switch (utp6 cable).
The other stuff is as soon as i conect the ethernet for the network the wifi dont work for internet, Could i separate wifi for internet and ethernet for the network?
Any idea you allmighty people?

If you want to share files between the Windows computers and Macs you need to enable file sharing on both. If you're using Windows 7 just select home network when you establish your ethernet connection - or you will have to dig into the properties and enable Microsoft File Sharing for that connection (you will have to select which files and folders you wish to share and with whom - it is wise to restrict this and require authentication even on a closed network).
On the Mac go to your System Preferences, Sharing tab and enable file sharing, click the Options... button next to it and enable SMB.
For your network you can use ethernet between computers and wi-fi for your internet. On the Mac go to your network settings and at the bottom of the list of services click the gear icon. From there select Set Service Order. Put your Wi-fi connection, Airport at the top and ethernet bellow it. Once this is done and your ethernet and Airport are set correctly you will have the configuration you wanted.
For your Windows computers you should have a similar task, you may wish to either google a guide for it or post in Windows support forums.

Well I am facing a rather odd problem. I just bought a new MacBook Pro. Now I am trying to hook it up in my home Network.
The situation is this:
2 existing Mac (10.4.9) & 1 Linux Box (Zenwalk) also bootable with Windows XP connect with each other perfectly fine!
the third mac (the new MacBook Pro) connects with Zenwalk Linux (over Samba) but when I try to mount a network share with the 2 existing Apples I get a message that tells me that the Alias could not be opened because the original can not be found. Or it just takes forever and then it still does not connect.
When I connect from the two apples to the new MacBook I get the same problem.
On all macs apple talk, Personal Filesharing & Windows Filesharing (Samba) is activated.
There is no problem with IP adresses. In my router I can see all the attached computers lined up nicely.
I am out of ideas how to solve this problem. Does anybody have a hint for me? I tried rebooting, other user names & switching of some machines but the problem remains.I switched all firewalls off but that was not it. The problem remains. I do not have additional security software.
Interestingly the pinging revealed that the new apple only has connection to:
..1.1 (the router)
..1.2 (the Linux box)
to the 2 macs it has a 100% package loss:
..1.3 (mac 1)
..1.5 (mac 2)
That makes me think it might be about the way the computers are connected.
The linux box is connected via an ethernet cable.
The 1st mac is connected via airport (b)
The 2nd mac is connected via airport extreme) (g)
and the new macbook pro has draft n but should be connected over g since the router is only capable of b/g.
Could their be the issue?
All macs connect to the internet and the linux box though -
Mac Mini - Wifi Issue - Not Finding Established Network
Purchased and tried to setup a late 2012 Mac Mini (2.3 Quad-Core).
Current Wifi Setup
- Cable Modem into Airport Extreme.
- Airport Extreme (Base) is pushing to (2) Airport Expresses.
- (1) of the (2) Airport Expresses is underneath the desk where the Mac Mini is located.
- The devices currently on the network include: (1) MacBook, (1) Apple TV, (2) iPads and (2) iPhones. Everything is connected to the network and running properly.
Issue
One of the first things I attempted to do when I started up the computer, was join my home network. I searched for the network, found it and entered in the password. The Mac mini would not accept my password (the password is correct), claiming either password was incorrect or the connection timed out. I went to the Airport Utility and noticed the Mac mini was not locating/finding the Airport Extreme (Base), but was attempting to connect to the Airport Express underneath the desk. An important note the Mac Mini and the Airport Extreme are approximately 20 feet apart.
Here are some the methods I used to attempt a fix:
I turned off the Mac Mini Wifi and reset all (3) routers.
I updated the firmware of all (3) routers, reset them again.
I updated the OSX to 10.8.2
I ended up loading the Airport Utility on my Ipad and taking it back to where the Mac mini was located. From the attached picture, you can see on the bottom the Ipad correctly showing the Network and the on top show Mac Mini still searching for the Network.
I ended up hooking the Mac mini though Ethernet using the Airport Express underneath the desk, which is a fix however that an issue if the wifi is not working.
I’m currently at work and will have a chance to work on the computer this evening, does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this issue?

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

Like it says in the title basically.
I want to use a time capsule to store my files and backups and access it from my phone and MacBook Air. However I do not want the others in my house who are currently connected to the same wifi/ethernet router to use my connection or my TC hard drives.
I had also been thinking about wirelessly extending the wifi network (a linksys N router) but I guess that will allow everyone to access my Time Capsule?
I hope you guys can help me.

No, if you have not provided them with the Time Capsule device password.
Users will be able to "see" the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading in the Finder on their Macs, but they will not be able to access the drive or the files.

I am trying to use my MAC's wifi connection for my Xbox 360 using the Ethernet Cable. I've done it in the past in an earlier version of OSX which I saved the settings in a text file for later use... those settings do not work.
First Question: Do I use a Regular or Crossover Ethernet Cable?
Second Question: How do I get it to work?
I've tried all the 10.7 tutorials I could find (couldn't find any 10.8) as well as older ones but none seem to do the trick.
I have turned on Internet Sharing and Disable Little Snitch while testing, OSX Firewall is Disabled.
I tried Automatic Settings and also Manual ones from the tutorials...

Im not much of a techie and I cant find a tutorial anywhere that teachers you how to go about setting up networking with Mac..
I have one MacBook with Tiger (10.4.11), and a Mac Mini with Leopard (10.5.2), the MacBook connects to the internet wirelessly and the Mac Mini connects via Ethernet.
Can someone point me to a tutorial and prove me wrong, or atleast make a short setup guide?

Which in turn implies: what is it you want to do with networking that you can't do? I'm suggesting that you may already have your networking, but don't know how to use it to do something that you want to do.
And, how are the two computers connected to the internet? (In more detail than just one is wired and the other is wireless.) Since one of them is wireless, there must be a wireless base station somewhere. What kind of device does the wired one connect to? A cable or DSL modem in your home? Or is the wireless base station also the device you connect the wired one to?
And when you say they're both connected to the internet, is that both at home, or the wired one at home, but the wireless one only when you go out to, say, Starbucks and use their wireless access point? -
I'm having an issue with my wifi connecting to my network. Yesterday my computer would not connect to my network, it can see the router, but it would connect and then disconnect. All my other devices can use the router, but not my u300s. I unplugged the router, but I haven't power cycled it yet.
Has anybody else experienced this issue?Dd it work at apoint of time or it was from the staring?
You could try to do SYSTEM RESTORE AT THAT POINT OF TIME.
Also you could try reinstalling the following

I want to thank all of you for your help. I finally have installed my AE software and all of our computers are up and running, two macs and one pc upstairs. I'm delighted. I did put in a password, but what I'm not sure of is the Guest Network Settings. Should I have checked the Guest Network which I did and it says WPA 2 Personal. I entered a guest network password. Does this mean that no one can use this but those who are on the network which would be my husband and myself? I don't want anyone else to access the wifi. I did enter a regular password at the beginning for the settings and of course a name for the AE.
I'd appreciate an answer to this because I'm concerned about privacy.
Also, I wanted to mention that with AE the connection seems faster than just with the modem. I'm just so delighted!Bob, I just turned it off. Will my husband still be able to access AE? he was able to. I am able to on this computer. I have the software set up on my Intel machine this one is older. I've just plugged this one into the AE with an ethernet cable. All seems to work well, but I still don't understand the Guest Network issue. All I care about is that we can get on. I don't want anyone else to be able to access the connection. So, I turned off "enable guest network." Did I do the right thing? Thanks again!

How to resolve network issue or dns to access web page on snow leopard server?
I have my network setup like as follows:
internet > router 1 > ethernet ports > switch > router 2
I have a mac osx snow leopard server connected to "router 1", but it is so slow when accessing a web page hosted on the server from a browser on a workstation connected to either router 1 or router 2?
Is there a problem with my network setup or maybe because I changed the name to newservername.local?@Jeff and @Camelot,
I think it is a DNS issue. I completely reset the DNS settings on server and the local name with the steps below, but now cannot access the site hosted on the server at all
I used a modified version of http://www.mkahn.com/2010/09/configuring-dns-on-mac-os-x-10-6-snow-leopard-serve r-for-hosting/ to reset the server set
1. Stop DNS Service in Server Admin
2. Close Server Admin
3. Obtain 10.6 DNS Default files (below)
4. Overwrite the DNS files with DNS Default files:
/etc/dns/loggingOptions.conf.apple
/etc/dns/options.conf.apple
/etc/dns/publicView.conf.apple
/var/named/named.ca/etc/named.conf
/var/named/named.local
/var/named/localhost.zone
5. Restart your server
All machines have 1ms ping responses within the network including this snow leopard server that I am trying to setup. There is another test web server that return pages instantly within this network so I doubt it is a network issue, but a DNS issue. -
I have a iPhone 4s 64GB that has intermident wifi network issues. I have completely restored the phone and am running in factory configuration with only one app installed (ping utility)and am still experiencing the following issue. When using the network (safari, facetime, etc) the network will become unresponsive. If i start a ping from the device the to the network gateway I get no response. If I ping the iPhone from the computer I get no response. If I toggle airplane move on then off everything starts working and the device will start to function normally and respond to pings. This happens continually throughout the day to any network I am connected to. I have received a replacement device and still have the same issue. I have talked to apple numerous times and they still say it is hardware. I have also deployed 100 iphone 4s to our company and hear of similar issues. Has anyone else had this issue or found a resolution? I am a very big advocate of apple products but after this exprience I will no longer be upgrading to the latest and greatest. I have reverted to using my iPhone 4 with ios5 with no issues.
I have attached the console logs from my iphone that retrieved from the iPhone configuration utility from a time when the issue was occuring.

Can I Network My Mac With Windows XP Pro With This Setup?
Hey Folks. I have an iBook G4, OSX 10.4.7 and I want to network and or remote access with a Windows XP Pro laptop. In the household, we have DSL with SBC Global. We have a Linksys router. I have an Airport Extreme wifi card, the PC is hooked directly via cable into the Linksys. The router is connected to the DSL modem. Since I get online wirelessly and the PC gets on via the cable and not wireless, can we still do web access hookup, file sharing, remote access? How do we configure both machines to do this? Will we be able to do application/desktop sharing live in real time? Thanks for your insight and help steve
iBook G4 933 640 RAM Mac OS X (10.4.7)Hi Rick. I want to experiment with networking the Mac to the PC on the internet and in the house. We both have MS Office, so I would assume we can do application sharing, work on the same documents in real time live, the same way that 2 computers play games and such. In other words, I don't want to have to hook an Ethernet cable to the Mac and PC to network together. Want to do it via the net. I did download the Remote Access Windows app from Mactopia today. Ready for the sophisticated methods now, (I think, hah)
Although it has gotten much easier to network Macs to PC's since Panther and Tiger, getting the configuration and hookups to work together perfectly is another challenge. It's tricky and frustrating when you seem to have put it all together, and then BANG!, it doesn't work. sigh I have tried the Ethernet connection method and that took forever to get that working, but it finally did ok. Also in the Sharing window under System Prefs, there are a lot of options to tweak as well.

My WiFi & Ethernet connection works but automatic is not working
The settings for my networking have gone kuh fluee (sp???) since I got up and running on my brand new MBP with 10.5.1 (and yes, I've installed all of the updates).
I have 3 locations set up (or I thought they were set up as they worked on my old PB):
WiFi
Ethernet
and then there's AUTOMATIC
Both my WiFi and Ethernet work fine. I want the Mac to understand that if Ethernet is connected, go and use Ethernet; if no Ethernet, then use the WiFi. I thought this would work when the location is switched to AUTOMATIC. AUTOMATIC simply just can't seem to connect. It continues to show all lights green except for the NETWORK light. I restart the modem and router over and over and the Networking thing just keeps telling me to do that again. Ok - what am I NOT getting here. Again, note that both ethernet and WiFi connection as separate locations work; what is NOT working is AUTOMATIC and I want that to work so that the Mac "automatically" detects what is out there for me to connect and if Ethernet, it connects via Ethernet.
Insight? Solutions? Advice???The following is an excerpt from The Peachpit Learning Series for Leopard but I am sure it applies to Tiger and probably Panther as well. I have four computers at home, three with Leopard and one with Tiger. One Tiger machine is connected to my Airport Extreme via ethernet and my other desktop runs Leopard and also is connected via ether net. My two laptops are connected via Airport.
Open network preferences via System Preferences. You'll see the network window which should list your networks on the left had side of the page in the order of preferences what you might want to do and your individual computer is change that order of preferences to Ethernet first and Airport Second, that way if you are connected via ethernet it will connect that way. If you are not connected via ethernet it will look for the ethernet connection first and not seeing one, it will move on to Airport. You can change the order of preferences by clicking the activity button at the bottom of the window on the left that looks like a little cog wheel and then set service order.
I'm not 100 percent sure but by choosing automatic it either tells the system to do the above automatically when you open your browser or email to it means go to your wireless system of preference.

Connecting pc to network on mac
i have a pc laptop that i had connected to network through mac desktop and for whatever reason it's not working.
i uninstalled printer from pc and now i can't figure out how to get it hooked up again. guess i should have written it down. ...
here are my steps:
1.HP printer is working on mac and the sharing button is toggled on.
2. I can see the network computer (mac) from my PC laptop
3. I go to add printer on pc / add a network printer tab and the search comes up with nothing. i'm pretty sure i was seeing all my printers before
4. i then toggle the Select a shared printer by name option and type in \\owensmac\laserjet and I get the big red X connect to printer.
i'm guessing the address is wrong. I renamed the printer laserjet on the mac.
any help would be welcome.

OwenWhat make and model of router? For what you describe, you need a combo Ethernet / Wireless Access Point (WAP) router. In that case, the short answer is, use the Mac, which is connected to the router by Ethernet cable, to configure the router using whatever instructions are provided with the router, typically on an included CD. For PCs, there's usually a setup program; for Macs, you'll need to find the help ot setup instructions file, typically a PDF.
Essentially, you want to set the WiFi side of the router to name a network, serve IP numbers by DHCP, turn on WPA and select a password. You can then use the Network Setup Assistant on the PC to find that WiFi network and set it as the default connection.

IMac running 10.9 not rebooting after network issues
This is weird, and while I am going through Apple's Knowledgebase steps - so far without success - I thought I'd post here to see if anyone else experienced a similar issue.
I was having network issues (or what I think/thought were network issues) for about a week. The symptoms looked like high packet loss, i.e. websites would simply not load reliably: sometimes not load at all, sometimes load partially. This started with some smaller websites and eventually it failed to load google and facebook. It took me some time to notice that other devices on the same WiFi did not have this issue, so yesterday I decided to reboot my iMac. Network diagnostics didn't show any issue and I was able to connect to the WiFi router just fine, just not find any websites, so I thought a reboot may fix it.
I have not been able to boot it back up since. It stalls at the grey loading screen with Apple logo and a spinning wheel for ever (I've let it sit for hours). Safe boot does not work, and starting in Verbose mode hangs at "executing fsck_hfs" and it doesn't seem to do anything else. I've booted from the install disc (actually a USB drive) and ran Disk Utility from there, but it showed not disk errors at all. It did repair a handful of permissions (I only saw iBooks related stuff and something about etc/apache2/users), apparently successfully, but it's still not booting.
Disconnecting my external Time Machine drive and unplugging the iMac from my surge protector didn't help, either. I am now creating a new image from the partition just to have an additional backup on top of my Time Machine, and I'm going to try Archive and Install next, which is the next to last step in the Knowledgebase.
I do have two partitions on the Mac (one 10.9 and the other 10.7), by the way, and booting into the older partition seemed to work right away. It's just that I don't have any use for that other partition right now, it's a leftover from back when I migrated to Mavericks.
I am baffled how all of this connects together. Network issues, boot up failure without apparent disk issues? Has anyone else seen anything like this?I am still working on restoring my iMac with 10.9.
I've cloned the affected partition. I used Disk Utility and it Restored without apparent unto an external drive. So I tried booting from that drive, but I get the same result as booting from the partition directly. Not a major surprise I guess since this is supposed to be an identical copy.
I have also created a dmg image out of the partition, and I was able to open that on my MBP without problems! All the files seem to be there. It seems to be something specific with the, uh, boot sector or, uh, something?
Next, I booted into Single User mode and ran fsck -fy. The Knowledgebase says it's okay to do it if Safe Mode doesn't work, right? The first time it ran, I got conflicting results. It said both

**THE VOLUME WAS MODIFIED**
The Knowledgebase seems to suggest that it should only say one or the other?
Running it again, it said

Alas, rebooting it still doesn't work, it continues hanging at the Apple logo.
