Network Library Fonts

Hi all,
I recently created a soft link to a Networked filespace and now have an alias in the Network directory
/Network/Library -> <nework file space>
I do this in a startup script that I created in /Library/StartupItems. In this script I make sure I get rid of the automount Library alias.
But my Mac will only see my "Network Library Fonts" some of the times.
It will always see my "Network Library Sounds".
So I'm curious why this may the case. In the font book, it shows "Network" as disabled, but it will not let me enabled it.
Is there a process that reads in the fonts at startup. Maybe my startup script is running into some race conditions, if there is such a process.
Any insight is much appreciated. Thanks..

OK, I was doing something really dumb here and I've fixed it (I have another folder called "fonts" outside the library folder, duh. Still, it seems that if fonts are in folders (instead of loose) the client systems can't see them. Is this expected behaviour?
When they're in local font folders this is fine though. As there are about 350 fonts that we have installed it's nice to have them all neatly grouped in folders (as there are only about 25 families, just lots of styles in them).

  • Problems with /Network/Library/Fonts/ automount

Okay, so I am having problems with setting up a /Network/Library/Fonts/ automount in order to share a master set of fonts among designers.
I created a folder on our XServe RAID volume called "Shared Libraries". Inside it, I created a folder called "Fonts" and installed some test fonts. So the path is /Shared Libraries/Fonts.
I went to Workgroup Manager, I enabled Sharing for "Shared Libraries". Privileges for Everyone are set to Read Only. it is set to Share this item Using AFP. Guest access is enabled. I enable Network Mounting of this share point via AFP, and I set it to Use for Shared Library.
So, I restart the client. I login, I go to Network, then Libraries, and my fonts folder shows up.
HOWEVER, when I go to FontBook, it shows Network with "OFF" next to it. None of my fonts are displayed. I right click on Network and select Enable Network, and nothing happens. None of my fonts show up.
Any ideas what could be causing this? Am I missing a step?
    Thanks!
    Tyler

Figured out the problem - PRivileges need to be set to READ AND WRITE. Made the change, and all is well.

  • How to use /Network/Library/Fonts

I have several computers (some running OSX 10.5, some 10.4) connected on a home LAN. I'd like to centralize my font management so I don't have to manually install fonts on every machine.
Apple suggests I could put all my fonts in /Network/Library/Fonts and have them shared among the computers, but doesn't give any details: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2435
I see that all my machines have a /Network directory, but it's empty. Anyone know how I can set this up? Thanks!!

    Hi
    The KB article says:
+"The Network folder is for fonts shared among all users of a local area network. This feature is normally used on network file servers, under the control of a network administrator."+
For this to work the way you want it to you would need OSX Server. There may be someone who could possibly outline how this can be done in a non-server environment (doubtful) over on the Server Forum:

  • Need help setting up a shared /Library/Fonts folder for font sharing

    Hi,
I have a problem setting up a shared /Library/Fonts folder on my OSX 10.5.5 server that gets automounted on the OSX 10.5.x clients.
While I managed to get the folder to show up automatically under /Network/Library/Fonts on the clients, the fonts in these folders do not show up in Font Book on the client systems. Plus, it seems like there is some sort of language mismatch, since I am using a German OSX installation. While the shared /Library/Fonts folder does show up under the "Network" area (where the servers are listed), it does not connect correctly on the "/Netzwerk" folder that OS X creates automatically. In fact there are 2 folders named "/Netzwerk" on my startup drive root directory, one that reads "/Network" when looking at it in the terminal, and one named "/Netzwerk". The /Network one does have a working link to the /Library folder, and the /Netzwerk one does only contain something looking like an alias of /Library, but it does not allow any access to this alias.
If anybody did manage to get this Netowrk "/Library/Fonts" to work I would be happy for some feedback. I am simply not sure if this is related to a localization bug, or if I am doing something wrong here. The fact that the folder and the fonts does show up correctly under the network portion of the sidebar seems to indicate that my setup is correct, but still the fonts do not work.
Any ideas, or maybe a step-by-step description on how to set this up would be great.
    Thanks a lot,
    Floh

Hi, Sorry I don't have an answer for you. But how did you get to share /Library/Fonts? I was trying to do the same thing by using "File Sharing" in Server administrator. But under volumes, I don't see my root directory "/". So there is no way that I can share any of my folders under "/".
    Thanks.

  • Network Library works, Font Collections don't

I have a Tiger Server with a Network Library. The server itself contains a bunch of Adobe fonts organized into a couple of collections. I copied the fonts and the collections into the NL's Fonts and FontCollections folders. All the NL's fonts correctly show on the client Macs and appear in client Font Book apps. The NL's collections do appear in the NL as viewed by Finder on client Macs, but do not appear in client Font Book apps. Deleting and re-creating the collections on the server end had no effect. I'm at a loss as to how to get client Font Book apps to recognize the NL's collections.

this is the same problem i am having with my xp side i am not getting the correct ip address and looking for a way to obtain the correct ip address not the one it is creating.

  • Network Library partial failure

I have a Tiger Server with about a half-dozen clients. I've implemented a Network Library for font sharing, and for a few months it worked great. Now all but two of the clients cannot mount the NL --it appears in the Finder as an alias that can't be resolved. The remaining two clients still mount the NL without problem. There's no rhyme or reason to why this has happened: no server failure, client blow-up, etc. The clients without the NL can still mount the server via AFP.
So far I've tried restarting a client, deleting then creating anew the LDAP link (Directory Access), deleting all client caches, and copying the SystemConfiguration folder from /Library/Preferences on one of the working clients.
I'm not at that network site on a daily basis so I'm hoping for suggestions I can try the next time I'm there.

    Hi;
maybe you have a firewall or any other networking equipment in the middle that would cut a connection that is inactive for too long?
There are some keep alive parameters.

  • Pages templates and /Network/Library

Pages doesn't seem to use template files in any Library folder other than a User Library. Files in neither /System/Library nor /Network/Library appear in the template chooser.
I administer an Xserve with a shared Open Directory domain, and I have a Library folder published to network clients so that it appears in /Network/Library. Most applications seem to honor /Network/Library; for example, I have a company Fonts directory in there for font sharing.
I assumed I'd be able to create a path like this:
    /Network/Library/Application Support/iWork/Pages/Templates/<My Templates>
and it should show any templates saved there in the Template Chooser whenever you do File > New in Pages. However it doesn't work.
    Any ideas? Shouldn't this work?

I have to agree with your post here. I have just tried to do the exact same thing and was suprised to find it didn't work.
    Very poor.
I am now going to have to look at creating and distributing a templates package to all users. Talk about pain in the rear.

  • Library Fonts not loading in CS3 under Snow Leopard

I just noticed this: Most of the fonts in the HD/Library/Fonts folder are not being read by CS3 applications. This includes old favorites like Verdana, Trebuchet, Arno Pro, etc. These fonts are being read by Apple apps like Pages and Text edit. Anyone else having this issue?
I think a solve would be for me to have my Font Management application load these fonts.
    Details:
I installed Snow Leopard on a freshly erased drive. Updated to 10.6.1. Installed CS3 Design Premium. Ran the Adobe updates (which was much more difficult than it should have been!)
    Thoughts, ideas, suggestions?

CS 4 and Cs 3 they load as expected on my Mac Pro? Tr resetting the preferences.

  • Can't install fonts in user/library/fonts folder

I have a problem which has a number of different symptoms (I presume they are related as they all started at the same time):
I can't install any fonts into my user/library/fonts folder. Or, rather, I can install them but they vanish about five seconds later
I have three files on my desktop. Every 60 seconds (precisely) they vanish for about a second and then reappear
Seemingly randomly, but always when I empty the trash, I get a message saying "The last time you opened Finder, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?"
The error message I get in (3) above always disappears when the desktop files blink as in (2) above.
These problems only started in the last 24 hours. Yesterday I installed an update which took me to Mail 6.6. I also installed a Microsoft update to Word. I also installed an update for TechTool Pro taking me from v6 to v7.
    Solutions I have tried:
I have checked SMART status (no problems)
I have verified volume structures (no problems)
I have reset boot and kernel caches
    I have deleted font caches
I have reset home directory permissions and ACLs
I'm running a MacBookPro with Mountain Lion 10.8.5
I am stuck, puzzled, frustrated but hopeful that someone in this community can help me out.
If you can, I would be so very very grateful.

Also when I called Wacom support they actually had me create a new user account to install the software. It's odd that I can install the fonts in the applications folder in one user account but they do not show up in the administrator account.
As I stated, if that new account was an admin one, the fonts should be available to all users. Alternatively, they might be user specific, but you'll have to ask Wacom about that.

  • How to repair fonts in  ~/system/library/fonts

    Hi,
FontDoctor reported an error in two fonts in my ~/system/library/fonts folder.
It seems that the affected fonts are TimesLTMM and HelveLTMM. The file size of both fonts is 0, so can I just delete them?
I also found files with many questionmarks in the name (e.g. ????????????????????? Pro W6.otf) that are more than 10 MB in size. Can I delete them?
Do I have to update sort of a font database after deleting the files?
    Best regards,

    Hi,
thanks I'm in the help line
Hmm - good question. The ????? - fonts look like they are the Chinsese fonts. That's what I found. FontBook spells them with the right font - which is in that case chinese - while terminal only shows the ????
So I keep them and don't think that they are causing my original problem. That's why I started to check the fonts from the beginning.
My system is strange and doesn't read .eps files and produces pdf files that I cannot read an on PC ?!?
Coming back to the 0k files. I deleted them, used TinkerTools to delete the font cache and restarted the Apple.
eps files can still not be displayed but now it seems that font are not causing that problem.
So, thanks for you help with the fonts. Do you happen to have an idea what I could do with my original problem?

  • Can I copy fonts from /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts to /Library/Fonts ?

    Hi,
    Short Version
The short version of my question is in the subject (specifically, I'm referring to files of type afm, pfb, pfa and maybe some other sort of pf? located in /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/)
    Long Version
Here's the long version, along with an explanation of why I'm interested. Please keep in mind that the only thing I know about fonts is what is contained in the xfig documentation.
I'm using LaTeX Equation Editor. (It, in turn, is using the TeXlive 2007 distribution of (La)TeX. Yes that replaced some "system files" like /usr/bin/pstopdf, but I recovered them from another Leopard Mac.) However, the equations which LaTeX Equation Editor is rendering just look wrong; for example, the equation $a=b$ renders in a boxy upright font, whereas the symbols are supposed to be italicized (math mode). Some symbols (for example $\epsilon$ a.k.a. ε) just don't appear. However, I found that the directory /tmp/random string of hyphenated numbers/ contained equation.tex, equation.eps and equation.pdf (among other files). Examining equation.eps using gv renders the equation correctly. However, viewing equation.pdf in Preview reproduces the faulty rendering. The faulty pdf is reproduced by regenerating equation.pdf using epstopdf (as supplied by TeXLive). Using (Apple's) pstopdf instead results in a slightly better result, but symbols like ε are still missing.
Just using the eps file is not useful (in addition to being kludgy) because the problem is also reproduced if I import the eps file into Keynote. Using Grab to take a screen shot of gv's successful rendering eliminates the transparent background, which results in an ugly import into Keynote.
Incidentally, I did not have this problem when using Tiger.
I'm assuming, particularly since gv didn't even work properly until I had installed fonts following the xfig documentation, that this is a font issue, and that, in particular, my X11 fonts are not transferring to Aqua. Is there a way of transferring the X11 fonts I installed for gv etc. to Aqua and if so how? Do I have to worry that font files in Aqua appear to be named after the name of the fonts, whereas under X11, the map from font name to font file appears to be the purpose of the extra file /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/fonts.dir?
    Thanks!

You must in fact add your custom fonts, as the default font set will be the same on all macs running Lion.
You do not offer details, but I may confess what I do in order to have the same font set on all macs at home, just in case someone needs to work on another computer. Usually, they are linguistic fonts.
    - I do not install additional fonts, bar the first time when I install a new Mac OS
    - save all fonts stored in System/Library/Fonts and /Library/Fonts unto an xternal drive, just in case something wrong happems
    - I have a folder with my custom fonts, which are added to all macs around
I do not know what you want to do, but I offered a hint.

  • Some fonts are in library fonts folder,  but not in font book or in illustrator

    imac/tiger/illustrator11
So I have some fonts that are in library>fonts but do not appear in font book or illustrator font list
also no fonts names listed in attributes, when you highlight font in the artwork, (but does list whether it is regular/bold!)
-also when I go about illustrator(11) it gives me info but locks program and have to force quit

Type 1 (PostScript) fonts require 2 files to make them work.
The FFIL files are screen fonts which load into the OS/programs in order to show up in the menus. They should show up as Font Suitcase in the KIND column of the finder. You will also need the corresponding LWFN file which is the postscript outline file. That will show up as Postscript Type 1 outline font in the KIND column of the finder. That is used to render the font on screen and output it.
OSX needs both of those in the same location in order to work correctly. Needing two pieces is just part of the problem. The names of the files are also different. The PostScript parts usually having abreviated names.
And it's more complex than that. One FFIL file actually may have many screen fonts inside it for the different variations of the font family. Then you will need to make sure you have separate LWFN files for all of those.
I know it's confusing. The 2-piece font just asks for problems. Unfortunately that is how Adobe invented them 20+ years ago.
OSX makes it harder by not letting you open the FFIL file to see what's inside. In OS 9 and earlier you could open the suitcases and add or remove screen fonts - even add unrelated fonts all to the same suitcase
Well I've rambled enough about Type one Fonts. I hope my first few paragraphs clear up some of it for you.

  • Warning: Bogus Helvetica Font May Appear in System/Library/Fonts

I received an unreadable email message from a Windows-using friend recently. The text was a jumble of fractions. Things got weirder later that day when I noticed the same font corruption on Amazon.com and a few other sites that evidently use Helvetica. Restarting my computer cleared up the problem, but it recurred. Eventually I discovered a pair of bogus "HelveticaMM" fonts in System/Library/Fonts, which obviously did not belong there. Not only are these fonts not part of OS X's complement of System fonts; in fact, they don't even exist. There has never been a Multiple Master (MM) version of Helvetica. Logging in as Root and tossing these bogus fonts has solved the problem (hopefully for good), but the question remains: How did these fonts get into my System Fonts folder in the first place? It certainly appears that my friend's garbled email message was involved in the corruption of my System fonts, but is this possible? If so, it would be (for me, at least) my first-ever experience in more than 20 years of using Macs with System corruption caused by an outside agent.
Has anyone seen anything like this before? If so, what's your take on the cause? More to the point: How could one prevent something like this from happening again?
    Thanks!
    20-inch iMac 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Meanwhile, at least I've nuked the offending fonts.
There is nothing "offending" or illegitimate about these fonts. They are installed by OS X 10.4, not by "some application installer." They do not cause the problem of seeing fractions instead of Latin, which has been experienced and solved by hundreds of people before you. That results from a different font, Helvetica Fractions, which is not installed by OS X or by any Apple application.
Your information on OS X and MM fonts is at least 2 years out-of-date. Please read the link you were provided earlier, which is from April 2005:
    http://images.apple.com/macosx/pdf/MacOSXFontTB.pdf
    From page 9:
    "Support for industry standards
Mac OS X delivers industry-leading support for popular font formats.
    • Multiple Master. This special type of PostScript font allows variation of one or more font parameters (such as weight) to create a large number of custom styles, also known as instances. Mac OS X can activate already created instances of Multiple Master fonts."
