Network Limited Conectivity & Virtual-Box

Just bought a new Dell Inspiron 3137 laptop, with 64-bit Windows 8.0 installed (not 8.1). I have four legacy 16-bit programs (Bible study, Sermon editor/reference, 2 games) that I need to use as cannot find more recent versions on the market.  So initially
tried to use MS Virtual-PC but it would not install, so then installed Virtual-Box followed by Win-Xp. The W8 OS now (after serious setup efforts) connects ok under Wi-Fi and Ethernet to the internet and to computers on my home network.  But Virtual-Box
and Xp fails! looking at my "Networks" W8 pop-up window I see an entry of "Unidentified Network" and that it has limited connectivity. Xp indicates "connected" but received packet count is 0.
Think this is a result of my attempts & connections under Virtual-Box.  I go to Network and Sharing Center and find first 2 category are enabled but  "All Networks" entry is disabled/off and I cannot find any way to enable! I go to
"Network Connections page and I see 6 entries (Bluetooth, Netgear router, broadband, Virtual-Box, etc). I run the troubleshooter on the Virtual-Box link and am informed that it cannot fix & no useful help provided to me by system!  No progress
w/ comparability mode on legacy programs.
I have initially informed Dell Technical support then most recently Oracle of this problem >>> both say it is not their product malfunctioning and that errors are in configuration of Windows-8 >> but no help.
This is serious irritation as have already wasted about 40 hours chasing/messing with this problem  >>>> NEED HELP AND SUGGESTIONS - PLEASE!
Thanks .....

Thanks Kevin for the reply, but no progress here.  I am completely new to Windows 8.0 and slightly new to any networking, so keep that in mind should you decide to reply again,  A.K.A., I might need a bit of step-by-step assistance .....
The symptoms here : My new Dell computer finally now connects by wi-fi to home network, has always connected to internet. I am using Virtual-Box v4.12.18 w/ Xp Pro, SP-3. Under Xp in Network I note that it shows "Connected" but received packet
count is 0, sent packet count is hundreds. Looking within W8 at advanced settings, I see 3 network types, 1) Private = enabled, 2) Guest = enabled, 3) All = NOT enabled (and I can find no click, link or setting that
will enable). Have tried with Network Discovery on & off, and with File Sharing on & off, and with 56-bit & 128-bit encryption selected alternatively. So run the Troubleshooter = first pass informed
it could not fix problem : later, troubleshooter stated it fix some problem(s) with incoming connections = at that point I looked and found that under W8 both sent & received packet count was into low thousand but Xp still showed 0 receive.
When I look at Networks under W8 I see "Netgear52" W/ no errors, then see either "Unidentified Network (limited connectivity) OR randomly  see "VirtualBox (Limited Connectivity) and so think Netgear52 is what I should be using.
Again under W8 networking pages, I try "Setup Network - Chose Wireless Router" am asked for SSID (whatever?) but showing nothing after 10-minutes. Have made all efforts both with & without Firewall on Xp & I think on W8 also, no changes
to Security Essentials  Xp is in NAT mode and have not yet tried "Bridged."
"ipconfig?"
Base system here are : Dell 3137 Inspiron laptop, Win 8.0 + Win-Xp Pro. Motorola Surfboard cable modem. Netgear52 router. Various home networked Eithernet connected computers. Various Tablet & eBook readers connected Wi-Fi. No other component is
reporting any errors and all work Ok.  Xp is Ok except zero connectivity to Internet and home network.  Need to get Xp connected so can access data for legacy programs off home & church networks.
So your help seriously appreciated!    Bill

  • [SOLVED] Guest Arch in Virtual Box Internet Problems

    I have installed Arch a few times already in virtual machines on Virtual Box and each time it is unable to configure the internet connection properly.  Having gone through the beginner wiki-pages on starting with Arch, I have tried "ping -c 3 www.google.com" and get "ping: unknown host www.google.com".  However, IP addresses usually work with 0% packet loss.
    I then followed the "hwdetect" instruction and that yielded "-bash: hwdetect: command not found".  The command "modprobe pcnet32" does not yield an error and returns nothing.
    I have also tried other methods

    Hi,
    Pretty much the same here
    That is strange but adding "nameserver 192.168.0.1" to /etc/resolv.conf enables me to access the internet. 192.168.0.1 is of course the IP of the host computer's vitual card but what is strange is: I need to use dhcpcd from guest to be given an IP that isn't even in the same range as 192.168.0.1 (for instance 10.0.2.15)!!
    So to basically, host PC has that virtual ethernet card with static IP 192.168.0.1 and internet connection shared (don't know if this is compulsory though) and guest uses dhcp, is given 10.0.2.15 (don't ask me where it gets it from because I disabled it on VirtualBox). Then I just have to add "nameserver 192.168.0.1" to resolv.conf and I'm good... till dhcpcd rewrites the resolv.conf. How could we set dhcp to use a particular DNS?
    As you can see, I am not a DNS expert. Using static IPs for both would be great but it doesn't work
    Does it help?
    The 10.x.x.x.x address range is assigned because you are most probably using NAT networking on the Virtual Box configuration.
    Try with 'Bridged'.
    If all goes well you shouldn't need to fiddle with /etc/resolv.conf.
    Still, if you still need to change /etc/resolv.conf, put your changes in a file called /etc/resolv.conf.head which will survive
    the changes that sometimes DHCP does on /etc/resolv.conf.

  • SUN VIRTUAL BOX NETWORK CONECTION ISSUE

    Hai frnds,
    i have installed redhat linux in sun virtual box server and my host machine is windows where i have installed ssh clit.my aim is to access the redhat linux in sun virtual box from my ssh client installed in my windows.
    when i installed sun virtual box it generated a ip of its own.hence i set the ipaddress of redhat linux existing in sun virtual box same to ip of sun virtual box.iam able to ping the server after logging in linux but iam unable to ping the redhat linux in sun virtual box from my host windows machine.After few seconds the connection gets terminated.
    i have set the ip address for my windows machine and provided the ip of linux as the gateway for windows host.i also have a ethernet card .
    when i give ipconfig in cmd it displays the ipadress of the linux(linux ip and sun virtual host ip are bsame) but there is no ip set for the windows host.it displays the message as media disconected .
    ip of linux(sun virtual box):-192.168.0.1
    mask:255.255.255.0
    gateway:192.168.0.254
    ip of windows set:192.168.0.2

  • VDI 3.0 with Patch2 - Virtual Box 2.0.10 - Host Networking

    Hi Guys,
    I have got following setup at a customer site:
    Solaris 10 U7 : Sun VDI 3 Server
    NIC0 - 192.168.100.xx network - sun vdi3.0 All-in-one configuration is installed here
    NIC1 - 192.168.34.xx network - windows xp template is bound to this NIC (bridged)
    NIC2 - 10.10.11.xx network - windows 7 template is bound to this NIC (bridged)
    When I boot those template on VBox manually - I do get correct ip from correct NIC.
    I have checked the .xml config files for xp and template which does point to NIC1 & NIC2 respectively.
    However, when I upload them to VDI and start cloning..the clones come out on 192.168.100.xx network.
    Logically - they should have come out on the same network as their respective templates - which is not happening.
    I know this feature is there with VDI 3.1 EA - however, this is a production system so cannot really use it !!
    Is it even possible with VDI 3.0 to have different pools on different network? Virtual Box 2.0.10 limitation?
    Regards,
    Hardik

    Hi Hardik,
    Wai is correct, VDI 3.0 allows you to specify a single NIC for each VirtualBox host in a Desktop Provider, navigate to:
    Desktop Providers -> YourVBoxDesktopProvider -> Host -> Host Details (Click VirtualBox host hyperlink)
    This page provides a drop-down with each plumbed NIC on this particular host. By default the first NIC is selected. Navigate to each VirtualBox host in your Desktop Provider and ensure you have selected the correct NIC and click [Save].
    Now enable Host Networking in your Pool -> Settings.
    All desktops registered/started from this point forward will use the specified NICs. Any Desktops already registered/running on a VirtualBox host will need to be either Shutdown or Powered-Off via the VDI UI and restarted.
    Can you confirm that you have followed these steps? I have a similar setup working with various NICs for Host Networking.
    If these steps still don't work, what does 'ifconfig -a' executed on your VirtulaBox host show? When you launch the VirtualBox UI and navigate to the networking section of a virtual machines settings, what Host Interfaces are listed there?

  • After Installing Oracle Virtual Box and changing the network adapter to bridged mode cant access my server

    Hi ,
    I have installed Oracle Virtual box on windows server 2008 r2 hosted on 1und1.de.
    Till installtion and setting up untun on virtualbox it was fine, but once i changed the adapater to bridged mode. I immediatly lost connectivity with my server and now cant access.
    It is now 2 days i cant access my server and neither ping it, also the website hosted on it is also down.
    The 1und1 has following 2 options
    1) using putty i can connect to server command prompt using administrator but cant run any gui application
    2) Server Rescue mode: where i get special environment to start, stop services, access registry and command prompt.
    Till now i have tried lot of setting to enable network connectivity but not able to success
    This is the result of Ipconfig /all

    Hi,
    According to the result of "ipconfig /all", the physical adapter dosen't appear.
    Please check if the physical network adapter works properly. We can verify this in Device Manager.
    To open Device Manager by using the Windows interface
    Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    Click Hardware and Sound.
    Click Device Manager.
    If the network adapter is working properly, please make sure that the Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) has been checked in the properties of the physical network adapter.
    If issue persists, please try to uninstall the Oracle Virtual box.
    Best Regards.

  • Installing oracle db 10.2.0.1 on REHL 5.6 using virtual box

    I can't solve this erratic behavior:
    Scenario: Phisical machine Windows 7 32b, virtual box v 3.2.12
    Virtual machine Oracle Linux 5.6 64b installed without problems (I have installed several machines with p.e. SuSE 10 64b,
    SuSE 11 64b and installed Oracle 10g without problems, Linux Oracle 5.6 with Oracle DB 11 ok)
    Trying to install Oracle 10.2.0.1 (need to be this version) every time I exec runInstaller, it begins, but simply freezes the
    machine. Each time it freezes at different points: sometimes at the first screen, other times I can reach the last screen with

    ¿can someone give any ideas ?

    other than host.But whenever I tried to add guest machine to host domain It shows me following error(See below).
    An error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate an Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC) for domain "crmrc.com".
    The error was: "No records found for given DNS query."
    (error code 0x0000251D DNS_INFO_NO_RECORDS)
    The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.crmrc.com
    Could you please suggest me the solution for it?

  • Install stuck: SBS 2011 Essentials on a Virtual Box

    I’m trying to do a test install of SBS 2011 Essentials on a Virtual Box virtual machine running on a Win7 64-bit machine. I put the install partition on an external
    drive.
    The install stops on a window that is titled Installing Windows. The screens says: “There was a problem during the installation. To restart the installation
    click Restart. You can also view the installation error logs.”
    When I open those installation error logs, I see no error. (It does have Info and Warning lines.)
     I’m stuck there. If I could paste in the the contents of the error logs I would, but I can’t copy from the VM until there is an installed OS.
    Any help appreciated.

    Hello Rob,
    There may still be a problem with two things.'
    1) Installing it on your external hard drive.  If it is a 'usb' drive, then it seems at times the software\drivers still causes some type of conflict depending on what type of system you have.
    2) Your network interface card is configured set.
    Going off the assumption that you have the latest virtual box software, your problem may be point number '1'
    Solution that works for some: Installed the virtual machine locally. (Remember, you can still set the disk dynamically to 160 whether you have the space locally or not)  Then transfered it to an external drive after everything  was installed and
    working.
    Caveat: Shame to say, you may  not have local storage  large enough to hold the vm. This is why you probably bought the external drive in the first place.  Hope this helps. Just find a machine that will allow you to create the vm locally first
    if you can.

  • Simple how-to guide to adding windows 7 64-bit to mavericks as a virtual machine (Virtual Box)

    Simple how-to guide to adding windows 7 64-bit to mavericks as a virtual machine (Virtual Box)
    Why use a Virtual Machine: Sometimes you need to run a windows only program.  A VM lets you do that without rebooting your machine.
    How is it different from Mac Boot Camp: Boot camp allows you to run windows but you must reboot your machine. It is faster and smoother than a VM (and with fullscreen details below), but you have to reboot for each use.
    Is it possible to have a VM and Boot Camp: Yes, and I do this because sometimes I want to use a VM quickly without shutting down, sometimes I want the advantages of Boot Camp
    How do I get Windows in Boot Camp: how-to here:

    Download Virtual Box Virtual Machine Player:
    https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
    Install Win 7 OS:
    Open Virtual Box
    Choose “New” (Note: Once you click new it will require you to complete the process of creation, no option for quit.  If you make a mistake or are not ready, just finish it and then remove it and delete all files)
    Name: “Windows 7 Virtual” or as you choose
    Type: Microsoft Windows
    Version: Windows 7 64-bit
    Memory: I suggest 1GB if you have 4GB available, 512 MB may run slowly.  2GB+ of 4GB may slowdown your MAC OS running while the VM is running.
    “Create a Virtual Drive Now” option
    File Size: 25 GB should be the minimum selected, I used 25GB because I expect to use the drive to store very little.
    HD type: VirtualBox Disk Image
    Storage: Dynamically Allocated
    Locate your new VM and click Start (again you will not be able to quit once you start, if you make a mistake continue until the red quit icon appears then remove the VM)
    It will ask you to select the files for the OS.  Select the ISO file, for example: /Users/Christoper/Downloads/X17-58997.iso.download/X17-58997.iso
    Proceed to setup Win with your preferences
    Type product key from your OS purchase or an existing one that you are moving from another machine
    Note: Screen resolution may be very limited on the virtual machine.  I use resolution 800 X 600 so that all of the desktop is visible.
    I suggest using a windows gadget to view the CPU and Memory usage > On desktop mac-right-click i.e. separate fingers and click both > Gadgets > CPU Meter
    Enjoy having Windows on your Mac!

    I have found a solution to the screen being smaller in the windows 7 virtual machine.  First right-click in the desktop region and select screen resolution.  It is probably set to 800 X 600 by default which is much less than the screensize you are using.  To determine your native screensize, go to your mac and finder > applications > utilities > hardware > graphics displays.  Mine is 1440 X 900 for macbook air.  Then go back into the virtual machine and sceen resolution settings.  Choose a screen resolution which is slightly less in all dimensions so that there is no clipping and you do not have to scroll when viewing.  For me this was 1152 X 864.  Then exit saving changes and with the VM in view press command - F (or at the menu bar View > Switch to full screen), which puts you in full screen mode.  Now you should have a screen with minimal gray empty space filling the majority of your screen

  • Need help installing Virtual box Windows VM's

    I am installing virtual box on wife's mac.   I got the instructions here: http://osxdaily.com/2011/09/04/internet-explorer-for-mac-ie7-ie8-ie-9-free/
    I did it previously and it all worked well. Recently the windows session license expired so I reinstalled that portion and it worked for about a week.  Then the Virtual box program just stopped working.   So I uninstalled the virtual box and am attempting to reinstall all components.
    First step is install Virtual box from here:  https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads   This went ok andvirtual box runs but there are no VM's.
    There is then a script to install the windows VM's.  It is failing.
    Script is accessed by copyinf this command into terminal:
    curl -s https://raw.github.com/xdissent/ievms/master/ievms.sh | bash
    This is the error I get.   It seems there is a file that already exists but I'm stumped as to what to do.

    Here is how I install mine, for numbers I will assume you have a 100GB HDD and 2GB of RAM:
    Boot from Win7 DVD and create two partitions, then install Windows7 on one of them. During the install Windows will create a 3rd partition to boot from. You will now have:
    sda1 - 100MB - Windows Boot - boot flag
    sda2 - 50GB - Windows 7 - no flags
    sda3 - 50GB - Unpartitioned Space - no flags
    Next boot into Arch and choose to manually partition the drives using cfdisk, using the unfinished space create 3 logical partitions of the sizes 100MB, 2GB, and 50GB. Mark the 100MB one you just created with a boot flag and unmark the 100MB one Windows created.
    Now you should have:
    sda1 - 100MB - Windows Boot - no flags
    sda2 - 50GB - Windows 7 - no flags
    sda3 - 50GB - Unpartitioned Space - no flags
    sda5 - 100MB - Linux Boot - boot flag
    sda6 - 2GB - Linux Swap - no flags
    sda7 - 50GB - Arch - no flags
    Click OK/Confirm/Write and then continue to the next step - File Systems and Mountpoints.
    Here you need to set the FS for sda5,6,7 and make sure not to touch sda1,2. Choose ext2 for sda5, swap for sda6, and ext3 for sda7. You will also be asked for mountpoints. Pick "/boot" for sda5 and "/" for sda7. Click OK/Confirm/Write and then continue to install Arch like normal, when you get to installing the bootloader make sure to install it on /dev/sda and uncomment the Windows part of the grub/menu.lst file.
    Reboot the system and you are done

The Host Key should be displayed in the lower right-hand corner of the VirtualBox machine's window. A pop-up message will also appear when you first start up the virtual machine, explaining that you will need the host key to escape out.

    Can you suggest me the solution for all these problemsI'm not sure of the other problems, but you could try downloading the Solaris 10 9/10 VirtualBox appliance, which is a preinstalled image including Guest Additions:

  • Do you use Virtual Box VM... Please help with this.

    hey everyone I'm extremely new with all this stuff...
    I have a iMac 10.5.4 with the most current version of Virtual Box.
    When i load Virtual Box everything is rocking and extremely cool... but after an hour or so my network/server connections dies off on the mac side.
    when i go to GO >> Connect to Server >>
    smb://ipaddress
    I get this pop up...
    error connecting to the server >>
    I click OK and i get an error code -36
    the only way for me to connect again to the server is to shut down everything and restart the iMac it works just fine and i load VB back up and than everything works for about another hour or so and than i have to restart everything again.
    any clues to my issue?
    thanks for helping a newbie!

    ...but since you are learning, and would like to know where was the bug, I tried your code and updated it.
    The only two small problems I found:
    1. You have a while loop that checks if there are more tokens.. it's not needed and this while loop will only run because by the second run, you would have consumed all the tokens in the for loop, check would fail and while loop will be exited. [I have removed this while loop in my version below]
    2. Now, here is the bug:your for loop has a condition that evaluates (i < st.countTokens()).
    Now count tokens will only return "remaining" tokens. Assuming test string "this is a test", countTokens return 4. Then as you consume the first token, it is 3, then 2 then 1. All this while for loop's i is going 1,2...
    i = 0, countTokens = 4
    i = 1, countTokens = 3
    i = 2, countTokens = 2, check fails, and for loop is exited.
    So all you have in your array is first two tokens. Rest of the array is null as it was when you created the array.
    So then when you loop back and check index 3,2,1,0.. 3 and 2 elements are still nill, that's why you get the result you are getting.
    Here is the fixed code:
    String sentence = "this is second test"; //String variable to hold user input
    String output = ""; //String variable to enable display of output
    String buffer = "";//String variable to hold output
    st = new StringTokenizer(sentence);
    int tokenCount = st.countTokens();
    //Array to hold tokens
    String tokenHolder[] = new String[tokenCount];
    //Walk through the tokens
    for (int i = 0; i < tokenCount; i++)
         tokenHolder[i] = st.nextToken();
    String reversedTokens[] = new String[tokenCount];
    //Walk through the array in reverse
    for (int j = tokenCount-1; j >= 0; j--)
    //Add the reversed token to the ouptut string
    output += tokenHolder[j] + " ";
    System.out.println(output);
    }

  • Virtual box install ?

    I have been trying to download the oracle express R2 on my laptop and found that I cannot do this as I have a vista home premium 32bit os installed. I was advised that I could download the virtualbox and then install oracle dbase on here, I have downloaded and installed the virtual box but it will not install the oracle dbase as it is not a OVF file. Does anyone know where I can get this or how I can change my unpacked dbase installation software onto virtual box software.
    I am new to this so a step by step guide would be appreciate.
    Thank you

    Many people on this forum scream and shout about Oracle not being supported on any "home" edition of Windows and say that it won't work, but that is rubbish. I have been running all realeases of 10g and 11g on Vista Home Premium for years.

    Oracle is NOT supported on any "home" edition of Windows and that is NOT rubbish. It is direct from the many Installation Guides that Oracle publishes.
    There are a lot of things you can do with Oracle that may actually work or may only appear to work under certain circumstances.
    That doesn't have anything at all to do with whether that release is supported by Oracle or not. Anything that is not supported is used at your own risk.
    Here is the link and quote from the Express Edition Installation Guide

    Operating system
    One of the following Microsoft Windows operating systems:
    Microsoft Windows XP Professional
    Microsoft Windows Server 2003 - all editions
    Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 - all editions
    Microsoft Windows Server 2008 - Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter, Web, and Foundation editions. The Server Core option is not supported.
    Microsoft Windows 7 - Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions

    Please tell us which of the above indicate that any 'home' edition is supported.
    >
    keep quiet about it being "home" Windows.

    Absolutely TERRIBLE advice.
    OP (and everyone) needs to know that Oracle DB is NOT supported on ANY 'home' edition of Windows. It might run or it might not. There might be screwy things that happen that can't be explained or maybe, based on the limited use by OP, no apparent problems manifest themselves.
    Based on OPs post they didn't run the DB installer; they tried to import a preconfigured VM image, an OVF file. And although VirtualBox will run on a 'home' edition OP still must install a 'host OS' withing virtualbox for the Oracle DB to run on. And that 'host OS' cannot be a 'home' edition of windows.
    So it is more than relevant that OP know the risks they are taking if they use a 'home' edition of Windows and then expect ANY Oracle product to run on it without problems if it is not supported by Oracle.
