Network locations: not joining automatically

I just loaded my G5 w/ Leopard and I'm having trouble w/ network locations. I am trying to set up 2 locations, the first is "network" and the second is "stand alone". The intention is to be able to jump on & offline easily. The problem I'm having is when I switch from "stand alone" back to "network", I don't automatically join my airport network, like I always did in earlier versions of OS X. Since I have a hidden network, I have to type the full name and password back in. I notice the network dialogue now says "known networks will be joined automatically" which I think is different than Tiger where you had to select "join automatically".
Any advice is appreciated!

I'm seeing this same issue on my wife's iBook G4, but strangely my MacBook doesn't have this issue. Both of us are running Leopard with the About the Login & Keychain Update 1.0 update and connecting to the same Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station with Personal WPA2. The update hasn't helped on the iBook and the problem has never shown up on the MacBook. I hope Apple fixes this soon.

  • Airport network not joining automatically

After changing out a modem and reconfiguring the airport extreme, all computers in the house (including iPhones and and a windows computer automatically connect to my home network, EXCEPT my G5, which says none of my preferred networks is available; asks me to join a network, shows the home network, and connects once I select the network (it's the only one showing). This never happened this way before, and all the settings indicate it should join automatically. Any help out there?

Thank you for the response. Unfortunately, after following the instructions, the same phenomenon occurred. At start up (or recovery from sleep), a dialogue box appears that says "None of your preferred networks are available. Select the network you want to join and enter a password if required" My preferred network is shown, and I select it and the password is populated automatically, and when I hit enter, I am joined to the network, but it will not join without this procedure each time. As I said, all other computers join automatically, and, oddly enough, this G5 also joined automatically yesterday after installing the new modem and reconfiguring Airport. Today, however, I have to log in each and every time. Anything else I can try? All "remember this network" boxes are checked.

  • Network Location not showing domain name in Server 2012 R2 after demoting 2003 PDC

The single active NIC in my new Server 2012 R2 no longer shows the Network Location of "DOMAIN.LOCAL" like it did before I demoted the only Server 2003 domain controller. The NIC now shows "NETWORK" as the Network Location.
The registry still shows a Profile with the correct PROFILENAME in
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles
but that name does not show up in the Network List Manager Policies inside Local Security Policy.
The 2012 R2 Srv has all of the FSMO roles, Client PC's can connect to the domain but will not get new map drives from a script, they must be created manually. My Quickbooks Enterprise clients cannot see the QB Server Manager on this server and I think it
is related to this issue because of firewall restrictions.
The Windows Firewall pointed me in this direction because the "Private Networks" is connected to my NIC named "Network" but the Firewall "Domain Networks" is reported as "Not connected."

    Hi,
    Based on my research,
Network Location Awareness (NLA) service expects to be able to enumerate the
domain’s forest name to choose the right network profile for the connection. The service does this by calling
DsGetDcName on the forest root name and issuing an LDAP query on UDP port 389 to a root Domain Controller.
If something hinders the DNS name resolution or the connection attempt to the DC, NLA is not able to set the appropriate network profile on the connection.
Therefore, I suggest you check the DNS settings on DCs and other domain-joined machines, which should point to the existing DC as preferred DNS server, and secondary DC as alternate DNS server, IP address of demoted DC should be
removed. In addition, please do not use loopback IP address.

  • Network Locations not working with Multiple SSIDs

I've had a MacBookPro 15 for three years.  Started with 10.5 and upgraded to 10.6.  I just received a new MacBookPro 15 with Lion 10.7.
    The Issue:
On 10.5 and 10.6 I use multiple network locaitons.  One for work, one for Home and one for Roaming.  I have a "Work" SSID at work and at Home.  I also have a "Home" SSID at home.
So basically, when I'm home I can select "work" to be on my hardware VPN router and connect directly to the office.  Then, when I'm not working, I can switch to the "home" location and automatically connect to my home network and not have big brother watching me surf the web.
In 10.7 this no longer works.  All of the WIFI settings are them same in both locations.  When I'm on "home" I add the SSID for home and it connects.  I then turn off the wifi and switch locations (same as I do in 10.6).  Then I turn WIFI back on, and it connects to my home SSID.  I go to the wireless settings, and add the work SSID and delete the home SSID.  I shut off wireless, change back to home and turn it back on.  I go to wireless settings, and the only SSID is the one I added under the work location.
Has anyone else seen this change in behavior?
    Dan

I prefer to continue the way I've been using it for 3 years rather than switch now.  The work location has the WIFI adapter as primary so that the default gateway is the wifi network even if I have a network cable plugged in.  This allows me to use my "work" network, but I can still share content with my local home network and also print to my local printer (not on my work network).
So, this solution really doesn't work for me.  And yes, I know you can only connect to one at a time, but  again, those are not the only settings that I change when switching locations.  Those are the only settings that are broken.

  • Networked mac not seen automatically

I have a router with two mac hanging off it. Neither mac sees another one in (browse) Network. I can easily connect them by entering their IP numbers, but since they are dynamic that's a major pain in a.. Once connected via IP method they are seen in (browse) Networks. Even when one is disconnected forcefully. All this makes no sense. How to make them appear automatically in Netwok broser and disappear when not longer on line? Enable AppleTalk?

I assume you have Personal File Sharing enabled on both, but also enabling Appletalk and Personal Web Sharing can help advertise them to show up.
OSX is very unforgiving about giving up Shares that aren't dismounted, so you should figure out some eject scheme.
An easy way to make them availble is to... once you mount by IP, drag the desktop icon for that Share to the right side of the Dock between Applications & Trash.

  • Network Location: Automatic vs. 'named' location usage

Here is some odd behavior I am seeing. At home, I have an Ubuntu server with a number of SMB shares. My Leopard install does not automatically put these shares in the sidebar UNLESS I have my network location set to automatic. Even if I create a network location called home and tell it to use DHCP and am given the exact same config as automatic from my DHCP server, I cannot see the SMB shares on my Ubuntu server. This seems very odd. The Automatic network location must be doing something additional that is not visible/accessible. Can anyone confirm? What else might be happening when automatic is selected vs. creating a named network location? If I create a network location and manually set my IP information, etc. for my local network I get the same behavior where I cannot see the SMB shares.
    Any ideas?

Choose Edit Locations from the Location popup menu, click on the button with the + icon, give the new location the name Automatic, and set it up.

  • Bridge Mode - Could not join 'network '. A timeout error occurred

Have my airport express in bridge mode with a home hub 3 (that has its wireless network disabled). When i go to join the new wireless network i created on the airport express , it gives me the error in my title.
What causes the timeout and how can it be fixed?

As I read the network you should be extend wireless network.. not join. And you need to setup the Express to allow it to be extended.. at least on v5 utility.. on v6 it could work automagically.

  • What is a Network Location?

I just recently set up homegroup to connect my desktop & Laptop together and it works flawless. However i've noticed there is now a 'network location' under 'This PC' on both my laptop and my desktop.
I'm not 100% sure what this is for and how it got there. If it was automatically installed when i set up my homegroup. But it isnt very useful since i can just use homegroup to access files between each device.
Can anyone give more information on what this does and if i can remove the network location device with out it  interferring with my homegroup set up.
    Thanks

    Hi,
The first time that you connect to a network, you must choose a network location. This automatically sets the appropriate firewall and security settings for the type of network that you connect to. If you connect to networks in different locations (for example,
a network at your home, at a local coffee shop, or at work), choosing a network location can help ensure that your computer is always set to an appropriate security level.
Computers on a private network can belong to a homegroup.
The Public network location is designed to keep your computer from being visible to other computers around you and to help protect your computer from any malicious software from the Internet.
HomeGroup is not available on public networks, and network discovery is turned off.

  • Weird: Backup file works fine from the network but not when moved into sandbox environment

We have a valid full backup of a database. We know it is valid, we have restored it twice from the network with no problems, but we do not have access to the network location from our sandbox environment.
The .bak file is sizable at about 9GB. The .bak file resides on our internal network, in a SAN drive. No problems there. When we copy the file from there into a sandbox environment to attempt the restore in the sandbox environment it gets corrupted. We've
tried three different times and all three different times it gets corrupted. First time we copied the file over to the sandbox the restore went up to 50% and failed. The second time we copied the file again and attempted the restore again it failed at 70%.
The third time it failed at 60%. The error message we get during the restore is "...Read on ... failed: 13(The data is invalid) Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Restore database is terminating abnormally."
Now some background here. To move the file our network team is doing this: they have this .vmdk file that they mount out in our production environment (which has access to the network location where the .bak file is), copy the file into the drive, then move
the .vmdk file into the sandbox environment(which does not have access to the network location), mount the drive in the sandbox environment, and then I have access to the .bak file from within the sandbox environment.
Something in the process of using the .vmdk file to move the .bak file from production into the sandbox is causing the file to get corrupted.
Any thoughts? Has anyone seen this before? Any idea? TIA,
    Raphael

  • Networked computer will not join network automatically after restart/sleep

    Situation:
I've got two computers - PowerBook 17" 1,25 GHz, iMac 2,16 GHz 24", both running OS X 10.4.8. They are networked via AirPort Express, firmware v. 6.3, in a WPA protected network. The AirPort distributes ADSL 4 Mbps connection.
Computers are set as DHCP with manual address (to keep stable LAN address)
The problem: While the PowerBook always joins the network after restart/sleep automatically, iMac in such a situation never goes online - the airport status in menu bar is on, the network is checked, but it cannot connect or be reached.
I always have to manually turn airport of from menu bar, then turn it on, then wait about 20 seconds and then manually choose name of my network.
After this procedure iMac is finally online.
    Settings of the AirPort are:
    AirPort tab
    Wireless Security: WPA2 personal
    Channel: Automatic
    Mode: 802/11 g/b
    Internet tab
    Connecting using: Ethernet
    Configure: Using DHCP
    WAN ethernet port: Automatic
    Network tab
Distribute IP address unchecked (no difference when checked - tested)
Any idea how to fix it?
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks a bunch, Duane!
You pointed me to the exact answer.
iMac joins the network automatically now, although I had to change original automatic login of an admin user to manual login page, because after automatic login as one of three users, an error message "Network error" appeared quicker than the actual joining the network, that came a few seconds later.
After manual logging (it probably needed a little more time) it's OK.
Thanks again and greeting from Czech Republic!

  • Could not join "wifi network name".  A connection timeout occurred.

    Mac Pro running 10.7.5.
Whenever the computes wakes from sleep or logs in, it no longer automatically connects to my wifi network.  When I manually select the network for from the Wi-Fi status in the menu bar, I get the following message:  Could not join "wifi network name".  A connection timeout occurred.
Even though I get that message the machine joins the network with no other problems.  I am led to believe that is is on the Mac Pro as my Macbook and iPad/iPhone join the network with no issues.
I have tried deleting and restoring the preferred network, and remember networks is checked.  I have also restored my airport express base station.
    Any suggestions?

System Preferences > Network > WiFi
To give a network the highest priority, drag the name of the network to the top of the list. This is the network your computer will attempt to join first.

  • Computer will not join wifi network.  Please hep

I've used it at my home, in the airport, and cafes, and it worked flawlessly, but now in my girlfriend's house I cannot join their network. I even installed a brand new Linksys router today and it still will not join. It finds the network SSID but refuses to join it. All other computers in the house have no problems.
    Please help.
    Thank you.

    Hi Jason,
Yes, other Macs, a MacBook Pro & Black MacBook, are connected to the network. The original router had WEP security and this router has WPA2 Personal security.
I just realized my iPhone won't connect to it either. I'll try resetting it with no encryption.
How do I make a new network location?
    Thank you!

Notice there is no mention of WiMax.
It doesn't really matter anyway as Sprint is rolling their WiMax network down for use by MVNOs. Actual Sprint customers will not have access to WiMax at all. It was a failed experiment.
