Network - Macintosh hd vs mac name \public + xls read only problem

hi,
new to mac world...
i've 2 mac osx 10.5, whenever i tried to access them by network/Macintosh hd i have troubles opening excel/pdf files("The file may be read-only or you may trying to access a read-only location or the server the document is stored on may be not responding"), i can copy the files to my desktop and open them without problems.
if i copy the files to the public folder i can open them from the network without problems
in both accesses i'm using the same user that as administrative access.
so what is the difference since i'm using a root account on both times
regards

any hints?

  • Outlook 2011 for MAC vs Public Folder & Read Only

    Hi.
    We have MAC OS 10.5.8
We use Outlook for MAC 2011. Use Public Forders, open the file XLSX, but it mode "read only".
Users can not edit these files.
Files are shared, so save them from himself locally and copied at the public Folders - does not fit.
    How to enable editing?
noticed when opening the file it is placed in the directory:
    /Users/username/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/Outlook Temp
I did chmod 766 for directory.
But files still have rights 644.
    I see two solutions:
configure Outlook 2011 to allow edit documents. But I can not find where it is configured...
Or give the right directory that you could edit the files. But I do not know how...
    Thank you.

  • Excel .xls 'read only' after downloading security update

Today all my data .xls files won't open - the message reads:
I am able to open one .xlsx file but all the .xls will only open as 'quick view' I've recently downloaded Security Update 2015 version 1 and also updated Remote Desktop client. I restarted my macbook pro today. That's when the trouble started  I'm running Mavericks 10.9.5.
I've tried using time machine to open older versions of files but they too cannot be accessed. I've also tried renaming the files with non-numerical names. No joy with that either.
    HELP please!!!!!

Fixed it myself by repairing disc permissions. Embarrassed - it was an easy fix in the end.

  • Excel 2011 on mac is saving blank read only csv files

    Hi,
Have done some fault finding myself. but got to the limits of my knowledge.
I think this is more a bug than a question.???
    My Mac OSX 10.8.5 with Excel:MAC 2011 Version 14.0.0 (100825)
is saving csv files (0kb), they are read only but are not locked in "Get Info" and my permission is set to read&write.
I thought it may have been a memory issue (Still could be) so I shutdown and restarted.
I have tried other versions of CSV, same deal.
I have been able to save csv many times before and no config setting have been changed.
I also thought it could be a NAS issue, so I saved to local SSD, same deal.
I have now done a copy and paste to google sheets, downloaded as csv and xlsx, both open fine and both can save as csv fine, no issue. However they are just data, no formulas or colours etc.
So I may have isolated it to a corrupt file.
I will try another xlsx from the same source and see what happens.
If I find the route cause I will post back here.
    re-evaluating the situation:
If I save and save again, the second time it tells me it cannot access the first saved file, so I then cancel and excel gives me the "this workbook contains feature..." speech, I hit continue, and for some reason it saves a backup (0kb) and then puts the content into the previous file that it said it could not access. Weird.
If I don't save twice it does not allow me to access the file afterwards
    Issues:
0kb - no content, until I save twice even though the second time it says it cannot access the file.
ReadOnly if I don't save twice.

Thats not the answer and its driving me nuts too! I have to rename every file every time I close it and then want to re-edit later. Having carried out a google search, this is clearly not a new problem. Will someone please stand up and sort this out?

  • A message to Deavonex!  Yes, what you have written has helped me! I have managed to initialize iPad touch 4th generation after it locked by itself in the middle of set up (using Mac)!  But I read only long answer you did write! I pressed all the buttons

    A message to Deavonex!
Yes, thank you! What you have answered has helped me to initialize iPad touch 4th generation model, and unlock it!  Although, I only read your long reply first, to solve the problem that you have written before to someone else!  It did not work exactly as you wrote, but you sent me in the right direction.  Since, iPad did not have any data anyway, it did not matter if I lose any data in the process, I did not need to back any saved data.  I pressed all the buttons and held it for different  times and I don't know how it happened but eventially it turned on (logo picture apple appeared) and it was initialized!  Thank you!

Thank you for your feedback; I glad you are up and running

  • How to set Permissions for Mac HD from "No Access" to "Read only"

Hi everyone! My friend's having a problem with her MacBook Pro. She accidentally changed the value of the Macintosh HD's privilege for everyone from Read only to No access. (See attached image for reference/guide). Seconds after, her Mac crashed. She rebooted her laptop, the Apple logo shows up with the usual scrolling week. Afterwards, the scrolling wheel disappears but the Apple logo is still there and it no longer proceeds to her login/desktop screen anymore.
We already tried Repairing Disk Permissions (by pressing Command +R on bootup) and Repair Disks, rebooted, but it's still up to nothing. Unfortunately, she doesn't have a Time Machine backup.
Is there a way to revert the changes even though the login/desktop screen can't be accessed? Is having the value "No access" on your Macintosh HD unsafe and will make you locked out of your system?
I am looking forward to your fast and favorable feedback. :-)
    Thanks in advance!

There is currently no way to access the disk, no access means no access.
Others may know better but I would backup the data on the drive, erase and reinstall.

  • How do i remove "network" from Mac Name Devices?

Im currently setting up an apple network to work with my Active Directory and so far so good. I have Active Directory authenticating users and open directory restricting access to features. In Finder i have been able to create a policy to remove the objects from the side panel e.g shared, places and devices. My problem is i am unable to remove "network" from clicking "mac name". The reason for me doing this is because it opens a massive security hole in my network. When i map/mount a windows directory e.g The users home directory, it then displays every share on that server apart from the hidden shares when you go to network>servername. Its not possible to hide all the shares because they are needed by windows e.g Netlogon and SYSVOL. So my question is how can i remove or can i remove Network
    Thanks

But they can also be accessed by Windows, also when they are NOT visible. So just by hiding the folder, you don't add any security. If it had to be accessed there is always a way to without seeing the symbol. Set up ACL permissions for the shares so users can only access data they are authorized to.

  • The mac name is already taken by another device

Is there a way to see the names of the devices connected to my wi fi network?
it says that the mac name is already taken by another device, then my mac starts to change host name often

I do not get any message at all when I try to trash it. The folder simply does not move to the trash. I marked this solved before I tried the unlocking solution, but I am confident it will work. It seems counter-intuitive to have a locked by default action, since a burn folder should be editable. I thought that was one of the main ideas of a burn folder.

  • Network Topology: Internet to Mac to Router?

If one wants uses a Mac to connect to a WiFi modem, turns on Internet Sharing to share the connection over Ethernet, and then connects an Ethernet cable to a router, should the router be in bridge mode? I don't have specifics because I'm inquiring on behalf of someone else.
I was just hoping someone who knew could send a couple pointers my way.
    Many thanks in advance.

In general your life will be much, much easier with fewer devices running NAT.
In most cases the router that connects to your ISP runs NAT to link the public internet to your private LAN (typically a 192.168.x.x network).
Now you're extending your network by using your Mac to link this network to another network. You do this by running NAT.
If you add a wireless access point to the internal-internal network and you set it to also run NAT you're triple-NATting your network - one NAT at your ISP's router, one NAT on the Mac and another NAT on the wireless base station. ick, ick, ick.
Given your question I would absolutely run the base station in bridge mode to act as a simple link between the wired and wireless clients. This will eliminate one level of NAT. You can do it the other way but there's absolutely no advantage and it just serves to complicate the setup.
However, I have to ask why you don't set the wireless router as the first device (connected to your ISP) and have that run a single NAT for the entire network. That would seem to be the simplest solution all around.

  • IPad 2, iPhone4 will not connect to wifi network. However, my Mac desktop connects perfectly. I can't figure out why?

Hi, I cannot get my iPad 2, iPhone4 (nor husbands HTC One) to connect to my wifi network. However, my Mac desktop connects perfectly. On the other devices I just get an error message saying that Safari cannot connect to the internet. This has been going on for a few days so I've tried all the fixes I can find on the web (restarting modem/router, forgetting netork settings, etc), but nothing seems to work. I've done all the latest updates on my devices. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Csmo2013,
Since multiple devices from different manufacturers are having the same issue, I think it would be a good idea to test the mobile devices on a different network to see if they work. That way you can isolate the issue to being with the router/modem or not. I see you have already restarted the router/modem, and forgot the network settings on the devices, but allow me to offer this article for assistance.
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1398
    This section in particular:
Unable to access the Internet while connected to Wi-Fi
If you are using a public or commercial network that requires a login or subscription, see this article for more information.
Check to see if you have a self-assigned IP address:
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you are connected. Then tap >.
If your IP address is 169.254.xxx.xxx, see this article.
If you do not have a self-assigned IP address, see if other Wi-Fi devices on your network have Internet access.
If they do not, consult with your network administrator or ISP for further assistance.
If they do, reset network settings on your device by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Note: This will reset all network settings including: previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords, recently used Bluetooth accessories, VPN and APN settings.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • How to REBOOT the Network without rebooting the Mac?

Is there a way (perhaps with Terminal) to reboot the Network without rebooting the Mac.
Sometimes after rebooting the ADSL2+ Router (Comtrend CT-536+) from a web browser pointed to http://192.168.1.1 the router reboots but the Ethernet connection to it gets stuck. The System Preferences Network Built-in Ethernet shows orange instead of green and there is no connection to the Internet. I must reboot the Mac to get out of it but I wonder if there is other way to refresh or reboot the Network without requiring a full Mac rebooting.
    Thanks.

I'd try setting up a duplicate Location/Connection in System Preferences> Network... slightly different name, then if it gets stuck try switching to the other Location in Network, then hit the Apply button.

  • How do i create a little network with my i-mac and macbook

how do i create a little network with my i-mac and macbook

    Hello:
To give a sensible answer, a little more information is needed.
I am guessing that you want to set up a wireless network as you have both a desktop and laptop.
There are some pretty good tutorials/articles in the knowledge base articles.

  • Using a different .Mac name?

Is it possible to set iWeb to publish to a different .Mac name than the one that is currently registered under system preferences? I have one for work and one for personal and I'd like to be able to edit my Personal site on my work computer as well.
    Thanks

You just change the name and password in system preferences/.Mac. iWeb publishes to whatever account is listed there. You might find it easier to set up a separate user account where these prefs would always be set to your other account so you don't have to keep switching it.

  • Using a network-stored catalog with Mac OSX

    Greetings all.
I am using Photoshop Elements 11 on Mac OSX Mountain Lion and want to store my catalog on a local network drive (FreeNAS).  I have encountered many problems while attempting to do this.  Then I noticed in the Elements Organizer help, under the section "Repair a catalog", the following: "Note:  (Mac OS) You cannot access catalogs present on a network drive."
Is this true. or has someone found a workaround to the problem?
    Thanks!
    --John

Thanks, for that ( I assume we have to carry on in English due to forum policy even though we are both of German tongue I assume)
You mean the access problems are part of the "no network drive" thing? I suspected that. Took me a whole day in front of my computer to realign the mess.  So should one better not use the network drives at all? Quite a pity in times where everybody seems to use network storage.
No, I did not use organizer to use the photos. So there is no way to reconnect them? Should I delete the catalogue and start with the photos from scratch?

Well, yes, these are part of the "no network drive" thing.
As for moving the photos, did you use organizer to move them? You will always have trouble if you move photos outside of organizer, even on the same drive--you have to let it manage your photos or it doesn't have a clue as to what happened.

I have a G5 mac using ver 10.4.11 and a newer mac using ver 10.8.4 these are networked. using the new mac i looked up my my photo on the old mac. It then said you need to upgrade your library which it did. Now the old mac can not open the photos and say that I need to upgrade my I photo to a newer version. The old mac has no more support from apple in software update so I am not sure where I should go from here. can I use new soft ware with the old mac

The other part of the upgrade message was a warning that once you upgraded you would no longer be able to open the library with the old version which is exaclty what you did and what happened when you choose to continue
The iphoto library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iphoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process may take several minutes depending on the number of photos in the library. Cancel or upgrade.
So now your choices are to not use iPhoto with the previous version using it onky with the newer version, restore your backup from before you did this upgrade or purchase iPhoto Library Manager and use it to rebuild the library using the older version of iPhoto (instructions are on their web site) thereby downgrading it (without projects)
