Network Management App

I would like some recommendations on an app which would keep track on my data usage, and also manage my network settings.
I have a data plan which allows me 3 GB of data each month, and any further usage is charged at a very high rate. This 3 GB limit is just about sufficient for me, but I managed to exceed this limit a couple of times, which showed a huge impact on my bills. So I'm worried about downloading data after using up the limit of 3 GB. So I'm looking for an app that would switch off my network settings or at least warn me to switch it off, after I reach the 3 GB data usage. I don't want to rely on the Usage data in settings, because for that I have to manually keep checking my data usage.
Any app which would be fit for me?

Know a good network management app? We have a Time Capsule/router with multiple devices (MacBook Air, iPhones, iPads) plus other PCs when we have people visiting. Is there any way I can see what websites were visited through my WIFI and how much bandwith was consumed?
Ideally - I'd be able to monitor this on one screen - ie iPhone XYZ downloaded 200MB from YouTube, HP laptop downloaded 1.3GB on Skype, etc.

No, the things you are asking are well beyond a time capsule.. which is a simple basic router.
Get a WNDR3800 netgear and load gargoyle firmware on it.
You need to recognise what you are asking of a domestic router is not available in any out of the box solution. gargoyle is extremely easy to load and works very well.
Plus it allows you to set quotas..

Network-manager & wifi issues

my laptop is Archlinux + XFCE4 .
I want to find a network-manager app to help me use wifi network.

Network manager won't save connection password

Hi there.
I am installing new notebook and I am stuggling with an issue for couple of days already.
I am on Cinnamon and I am using Network Manager.
Before installing that, I had net-auto-wireless daemon in rc.conf which did the job and wifi was working.
After switch to NM, I can search and see networks around me, but connection fails.

I have searched forum here, but haven't found any solution so far.
When I select my network from NM applet, I never get asked for password. However, if I start nm-connection-editor from the command line, edit connection and password there, then all starts to work and there is no problem anymore. So the issue appears to be that NM never asks for password and therefore no connection can be stored.
I have read the wiki and have created org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.pkla in /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d directory.
Some remarks:
- please do not suggest to switch to wicd, I know about it, but I prefer to fix NM instead
- I tried to remove my other computer's saved wifi and it exhibits the same behavior. It worked once, 100% sure about it.
- It does not work also under regular Gnome 3 session, so it is not Cinnamon's fault.

Fixed!!! Went back into the dir: swtools/apps/fingerprint and noticed a second file named updater. Ran, rebooted.
Works. Never would have seen unless I went back.

Network Manager fails to connect with Huawei E3276 modem after upgrade

Hi,
I have Huawei E3276 (lsusb: Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E398 LTE/UMTS/GSM Modem/Networkcard).
I wasn't updating the system for a long time (since KDE 4.14.3), but after upgrade Network Manager can't connect anymore.
I also tried on the fresh install on different machine (KDE + Plasma 5.3), but I get the same error...
Error: failed to connect modem: Only IPv4 is supported by this modem.
I realize that this problem has nothing to do with KDE, but with new version of NM + MM, systemd, dhcpcd or dhclient?
Why now Network Manager don't use ppp like before upgrade (different connection type "cdc-wdm0")?
I would be grateful for any advice.

This week, after update, modem works again.
However, there's a new bug in the kernel, which was not there before:
kernel: huawei_cdc_ncm 3-2:1.2 wwp0s20u2i2: kevent 12 may have been dropped

Can't login to Server management app

I installed Lion server this evening and I was able to access the Server management app. However just recently I'm no longer able to connect. Even the dashboard server widget doesn't display any info and just says "network error". The only thing I can think of that might have caused it was running the disk utility and verifying/repairing permissions. Is there any way that I can regain access to the Server management settings? Thanks.

Gnome3 - Network Manager Settings - Authentication

Hi guys,
I've had a problem that started recently (not sure exactly when) with network manager.
When i try to change my network settings for a wireless connection to "available to all users" and click save,
the gnome (policykit?) authentication dialogue pops up requiring root password, but then almost instantaneously disappears again, so im unable to change/save the settings.
This could have possibly started after the upgrade to 3.2, but can't be sure about that.
I've tried deleting (moving temporarily to a backup location) the .config/dconf and .gconf/apps/nm-applet directories, but this doesn't appear to have any effect on nm-applet (wireless settings/passwords are still saved).
If i go into gnome-control-center and try editing something else which requires unlocking, then the dialogue box appears without issue, this only seems to happen for the nm-applet.
Are there any other files/directories which i should be looking at?

Had a similar problem when trying to set up Network Manager. It turned out for me that I wasn't part of the Network group.
Try:
gpasswd -a <username> network
It has to be done as root or sudo if you're in the sudoer's list.

Network Manager questions - startup etc

Hi all,
I have a couple of questions about the Network Manager in 10g Spatial that i'm wondering if someone can help me with.
1) Are there any plans to supply the "ShortestPath" type functionality currently (to my knowledge) only available in Java to PL/SQL?
2) It seems that the NetworkManager.readNetwork() function reads the entire specified network into memory (not surprisingly given it's name). When i've tried this with a pretty decent sized network it has swallowed huge quantities of memory and taken upwards of 40 minutes or so to perform this operation. And this isn't even on the largest network I can imagine. What would happen if I tried to read an entire US "minor road" set? I've seen the app in the "Pro Oracle Spatial" book which seems to load the network and keep it accessible via a JSP session handle (p493). Is this the recommended approach - a "one-time" initialisation and a machine with LOTS of memory?!
3) Does anyone know if the source code for the "eLocation" demo (http://elocation.oracle.com/elocation/elocation_entry.jsp) is available?

1) PL/SQL API for Network Analysis is coming in Oracle 10g Release 2.
2) In Oracle 10g Release 1 it is a requirement to load the entire network. Loading the entire street network of new york city on my 1 Ghz laptop requires about 1 minute. In Oracle 10g Release 2 you can specify a predicate on the load network so you do not have to load the entire network.
3) Source code for elocation will be available as an Oracle 10g Release 2 feature (I'm not sure what the "name" of the feature is, but it is a bundling of geocoding and routing, and when combined with MapViewer is a complete "elocation in a box" type of feature.

Network-manager not working

I tried to install network-manager and gnome-network-manager and it was sucessfully installed since the dependency problem was fixed but after adding the dhcdpd and networkmanager daemon's to my rc.conf and removing all network interfaces, (except for lo) it cannot find some resouces it says it "cannot continue." I'd say it has to do with the gnome applet and not the networkmanager daemon itself. I think there's some secret code somewhere hidden in Arch that prevents handy graphical apps from running, because I'm having problems with knetworkmanager too. Eventually, everything GUI will be so buggy that we'll all be forced to Openbox. BWHAHAA!
Errr, I'll let you know if I find a decent frontend that works with Arch.

How to install managed apps to iPads silently OTA using Profile Manager

Here is my setup.
100 to 150 Ipads in carts used by their departments in classrooms.
OSX Mavericks Server running Profile manager
I use Apple Configurator to push a wifi payload to the ipads as well as an auto enrollment profile to connect to Profile Manager.
That part works like a dream.
Now that I have that working. I am having a problem pushing apps to the Ipads. I downloaded some free apps, GDrive for example, using the managed distribution.
But I cannot figure out how to push the apps to the iPads without having the iPads asking for an Apple ID and password.
I just want to push VPP apps to the iPads silently.

Then you need include the apps when you clone with Configurator.
Managed Distribution of Apps is flexible because it works for the following scenarios:
Device
     • Device is owned by the company and distributed to the user
     • Device is BYOD and enrolled in corporate MDM
     • Device is BYOD and unmanaged
User
     • Device is "assigned' or used by a single individual
     • The individual has an Apple ID (or is capable of getting one)
     • The user is entered into your Profile Manager and has an email address (or device is enrolled and you do a push notify to ask for enrollment - remember, Managed Distro works without MDM)
     • User accepts the invitation to your VPP program with an Apple ID of choice - enterprise does not care what it is
Apps
     • Apps are assigned to the user account in Profile Manager
     • Apps become visible in the Apple ID's App Store account as available for install
     • If the device is set to autoinstall "purchased" apps, the apps for iPad will just appear
     • Apps can be "revoked" by the enterprise, returning the license to the available pool
     • Apps do not dissapear from devices
Managed Distro does not really fit education as depending on age your students may not be able to have an Apple ID, may not have email, and the devices may not be deployed in a one-to-one.
You are back to master image cloning through Configurator.

Network.manage-offline-status ineffective in FF4.0.1 on OSX 10.6.7

After Firefox automatically updated itself to version 4.0.1, it always starts up in "Work Offline" mode. network.manage-offline-status was set to true on about:config, so I set it to false, and that made no difference. I tried running FF in "safe mode", and that also made no difference.
It's annoying to have to uncheck the "Work Offline" option every time Firefox starts up.

The log suggests there is something wrong with the media browser on the computer.
Download and install the 10.6.7 combo update: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1361
If the issue persists after installing the combo update then reinstall iPhoto:
1.) Remove the following to the trash:
/Applications/iPhoto
/Library/ApplicationSupport/iPhoto
/Library/Receipts/iPhoto -- there may be many iPhoto files here there may be none. If you find any here remove them.
2.) Reinstall iPhoto from the iLife 11 install disk, or from the App store, or from the disks that came with your computer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3415
3.) Run all your software updates after reinstalling.

Some videos are semi-missing - they do not show up in File Manager apps or another app

I have what I will call three FILER apps: File Browser, Air Browser and File Commander. I also have MovieSRTPlayer. Those apps appear to not register the presence of some video files that I have definitely copied to my PB. The MovieSRTPlayer will overlay a .srt file's text over a video allowing the pb to show subtitles. It works as long as it can find the video and srt files.
I am definitely transferring a series of video files to the pb's video folder. I am also transferring a companion file to that folder. The companion file is a subtitle file in the form of an .SRT file.
THREE file manager type apps do NOT show those files as present in the video folder. The Video app itself does show and play those video files.
I have copied the files using both wifi-sharing and when they did not show up that way, I copied them using the usb cable to the pb's Z: drive and the video folder.
As stated the dam! files play in the video app. But they do not appear in the various filer apps. And they also do not show in another app, one that will display the subtitle (.srt file) file overlaying the video. In all instances it is as if the pb does not register the presence of those files on the pb.
Now, what is interesting is that when this first cropped up, 7 files were missing - just a mix of video (no .srt files involved). That is they showed in the video app and played but the filer programs did not show them. I managed last night and this morning to get 7 of those to finally show by copying/moving/deleting and recopying. But now I'm running into this brick wall again. I have repeatedly copied two video (avi files) and their companion .srt files to the video folder. They are in that folder (I've looked using usb and wifi-sharing) and they play in the PB's video app. They are most certainly on my pb.
Oh, and yes, I've rebooted a number of times.
Ideas?

I have what I call 3 file manager apps. File Browser, Air Browser and File Commander (the older free version).
They all show or don't show the same thing. So files are missing. And SIZE is not the sole determining factor. When I was testing MovieSRT and "lost" some files I copied and renamed avi and .srt files. So there are two extra .srt files in the Video folder. But while they are 32kb (kilobytes) and 58kb respectively, they do NOT show up in the File managers. The other two identical files with the names matching the .avi files do show up. The one very large mp4 (2gb) does not show up. A subfolder I created just as a test does not show up. But the large mp4 and subfolder were showing up while I was actively copying the 2gb file - they would show up as the file was being copied - the filemanagers showed the file getting larger and larger and while doing so the "missing" subfolder also kept showing up. Then once the large file was completely copied, both it and the subfolder "disappeared" - again, the large mp4 does show in the Video app and it plays.
My persistence probably is based on the fact I was a computer programmer many eons ago! Also, I was trying to get YOUR app to work and the avi files were not showing up in your listing but they were showing and playing in Video app (but no subtitles). Finally, after copying/moving/re-copying over and over including moving and copying to the PB's Print folder (just since it was empty) and copying it back to the video folder (now 2 copies), the files would finally show up. Peculiar - yup!
Oh, one other thing - the 3 file managers all show what I will call the virtual Playbook-Demo video in their listings - your app does NOT show it. Obviously, it is not located in the Video Folder but somewhere in the bowels of the PB. So, the filemanagers are relying on some "file structure" that is not fully correct. But your app does not appear to show it.

Looking for a good Password Manager App for the iPhone

I'm looking for a good and reliable Password Manager App for the iPhone with sync capabilities on macs. I've read several reviews on several different apps on iTunes, and either they don't work properly, or they're a rip off, or they just don't sync or all of the above. Any recommendations?

No interfaces shown in network manager [SOLVED]

I have just done a fresh install of Arch on my new Sony Vaio VGN-FW53GF, all goes well, except for Network Manager.
I can use my wired connection ok as eth0 shows up as active when I hover over the kde applet in the task bar. However when I go to "Manage Connections"
I do not see any Wireless networks or even my "working" wired connection in any list.
Wireless seems to be working as iwconfig shows an interface.

I use WPA2 with network manager without a problem. It should "just work", im not sure why you have issues, can you switch your router to a different security protocol to test?
