Network manager in xfce doesn't connect but wifi-menu does?

I may be misunderstanding how to use this since I've never done wireless from the command line before, but here is my situation:
I just installed arch on my Acer Aspire One and used both the wired and wireless from the command line. I had never done wireless from the command line before and just followed the Beginners Guide and used wifi-menu to select the network to connect to. It was very very smooth and connected me in seconds. After installing xfce I decided I wanted a tray icon for selecting wireless stuff and so I installed networkmanager and network-manager-applet. After starting nm-applet it reported my wireless as disconnected (even though it was connected) and when I asked it to connect to my network it was unable to connect. I restarted the computer and still no success. While I can get by with wifi-menu, it would be awfully nice if I could get network manager to work with xfce. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Thanks in advance.

I switched to using wicd and after a little while of using it it seems to work pretty well. It works significantly better than NetworkManager and doesn't drop connections very often so long as the signal is good.
My one complaint is that every so often a process called wicd-monitor likes to start using 100% cpu on one of my cores. Since this is a netbook and power is critical, I usually end up killing the process or restarting wicd so that it stops draining my battery.

    What happened to my iPad??

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • IOS 5 used to allow Airplay between iPad (WiFi) and Apple TV (Ethernet) as long as they were on the same network. In iOS 6, now both the iPad and the Apple TV have to be on the same network and both have to be connected using WiFi ? Why did they change ?

iOS 5 used to allow Airplay between iPad (WiFi) and Apple TV (Ethernet) as long as they were on the same network, i.e. connected to the same wired/wireless router. In iOS 6, now both the iPad and the Apple TV have to be on the same network and both have to be connected using WiFi ? Why did they change this ? Means that the iPad and the Apple TV box both have to be in range of the wireless router when this wasn't a restriction before. Apple TV could be anywhere as long as it was connected to the same wireless router via ethernet cable. Seems like an unnecessary thing to restrict.

I have found with AppleTV that it is the IPV6 on the computer you want to access is the problem.  The issue is that Homegroup on Win 7 or Win 8 requires IPV6 to work, but AppleTV won't work with IPV6.  (So maybe double check you have IPV6 turned off)
So you have to make a choice - Homegroup or AppleTV.... but you can't have both, until Apple brings ATV up to date. (crazy that it does not recognise IPV6 - c'mon Apple!)
You can set up sharing individually in Win 7 or 8 and have the ATV access files that way.
Having said that, there is always the exception.. I have an old HP home server running Win8 and it services ATV - but is part of the Homegroup... have no idea why it works on both, but no other machine on the home network will talk to both ATV and Homegroup at the same time!

  • Macbook Air Doesn't Connect To Wifi Upon Waking

Since installing Yosemite, whenever I wake my Macbook Air from sleep, it doesn't connect to Wifi. In order to get it to work, I have to open up Network Preferences/Assist me/Diagnostics and go through that process (then it works). Any suggestions on how to fix this?

    Hey there alhs77st,
If you are still having this issue where your computer is not connecting to your Wi-Fi network when you wake it from sleep, I would use the following article to help resolve that. This section in particular:

  • Guest network on express message no internet connection main wifi still works on express

guest network on express message no internet connection main wifi still works on express

We need a bit more information to be able to troubleshoot your issue.
The most common cause of Guest Network / No Internet problems is trying to use the AirPort with a modem/router or gateway device.
The AirPort needs to be connected to a simple modem in order for the Guest Network feature to operate correctly.
Can you provide the make and model number of the device that you call your "modem"?
We don't know if you are using a Mac or PC to try to configure the Express, so some information about what operating system your computer is using would be helpful.

I honestly don't remember.  I believe I was trying to set up i3status dhcp at the time.  Could have been the DHCP configuration file I created at /etc/systemd/network that broke my netctl configuration.  I should have mentioned that first.  I broke the internet and walked away two days ago and it's slowly coming back to me.  I don't follow the relation between systemd, netctl, and dhcp configuration so I'm sorry if I'm not picking up on solutions provided in your links.
I commented the file out right after I started receiving those errors.

To repeat myself, I can connect using wifi-menu after I ip link set wlp4s0 down.  I'm just looking for a fix so I can set up automatic connections.
EDIT: I deleted /etc/systemd/network/MyDhcp.network and now it works at startup.  Any idea why a commented out file would be having an adverse effect like this?

this phone hasnt been backed up in 7 weeks, backups happenn when this iphone isplugged in, locked and connected to wifi, what does this mean

That means that your backups are done to iCloud overnight.  The phone must be left plugged in and wifi turned on.
If you are shutting your phone off at night - this is the reason for backups not being done.

  • Network Manager Applet Cannot Edit Options/Connections As Normal User

Today I installed Network Manager, and Network Manager Applet in XFCE as a normal user. I followed the instructions on the Arch Network Manager Wiki to the best of my knowlage. The NM-Applet connects to my ethernet, and everything is fine. Untill that is, when I right click the NM Applet.
Once right clicked as a normal user, 'Enable Networking', and 'Enable Wireless' are greyed out and unselectable. Also, when I right click the applet and select 'Edit Connections' 90% of the clickable options are greyed out, including the options to 'Edit' or 'Delete' connections. The only clickable option not greyed out is 'Add' button.
Clicking Add brings up the 'Add New Connection Window', but again everything is greyed out. 'Available To All Users' is checked, but is greyed out also. But, starting XFCE as root, allows me to use the NM Applet with no restrictions, AKA none of the greyed out options. Everything works fine. This is my second day using Arch, so I am not sure where to go now.
It also may be of help ito say I haven't gotten a display manager, such as lightdm or gdm.
My guess is that root is listed under a group the 'jesse' isn't. Or maybe it has something to do with PolicyKit. I'm not sure. If someone could give me a set of clear instructions on how to fix this annoyance, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

I found the solution, I had to install a Display Manager. Now everything is fine.

  • [Gnome 3] Network Manager can only create system connections

    Hello,
Coming from ubuntu, I installed Arch with Gnome 3 (didn't like unity). I have a small annoyance with Network manager from [testing]. When I select a wireless network, it asks for my sudo password and creates a system connection under /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections. Even when unchecking "Available for all users" in nm-connection-editor afterwards, the settings are kept in /etc instead of gconf/dconf and gnome-keyring as was the case in ubuntu (don't know if that was also the case in arch with gnome 2).
Of course, I can instruct PolicyKit to not ask for a password when modifying the connections, but I'd prefer to keep my keys in gnome-keyring instead of unencrypted files. As the single user of the system, I do not need system connections.
    Any ideas?

Seems like this is an upstream change in nm 0.9, and no workaround that I know existed for it.

  • After iOS8 update my iphone 5 doesn't connect the wifi properly and battery dies instantly

Hi, I have upgraded my iphone 5 to iOS 8 and after that the full 100% battery discharges instantly even if I do not use any apps.I have to charge it every 2 hours. I do not know what to do now it became unreliable.
Second issue is that I cannot connect my wifi at home in some rooms, when the other iphone 4 is connected perfectly. Sometimes I cannot even see the home network sometimes it shows me it but when I want to connect it says something like error to connect the network. It always connected before the update. I have to use LTE all the time at home now. It is crazy.I am scared to upgrade the iphone to iOS 8.1. I tried to totally reset all setting on my iphone including Network Setting, plus I have turned off background App Refresh and Lowered my brightness to save battery life, but nothing worked. And I'm afraid it's getting worse every day.
Please let me know what I can do. Because it is terrible, I have this phone for two years only and I am very careful to devices I have never dropped it and didn't do anything to make these kind of issues.
    Thanks

Do the restore with out restoring from your back up if that doesn't work I would go in the the apple store.

  • Mac doesn't connect over WiFi

    Hi,
Since I updated my mac to 10.5.5 it doesn't automatically connect to my wireless, I have to click the airport thing and select my network and enter the WPA again.
    Any help?

Now if I check my console just after a reboot, the logs said :

A know if I connect manually (it's work) my WIFI connection, the logs said :
18/10/2008 11:01:03 kernel AirPort: Link Up on en1

I just come to migrate of OSX 10.4.x in 10.5.5.
The automatic connection in Wifi worked well under 10.4.x But today under 10.5.5, the automatic connection doesn't work, either after a starting up, or after a setting in a stand-by mode.
I suspect 10.5.5 of being the cause

  • Ethernet connects but Wifi does not

For the last few days my airport extreme has had to be restarted several times a day to maintain a connection via wireless. Yesterday wireless stopped connecting to the internet entirely. Ethernet works beautifully but wifi is a no-no. My macbook pro does connect to the airport extreme and I can see it listed in the airport utility but that is it. Connecting via airport to the airport extreme takes around 30 seconds and sometimes a connection time out occurs. The computer has no other problems connecting to other networks just my own. Things I have done to remedy the situation...
    Reset cable modem.
    Reset Airport Extreme.
Deleted preferred networks in system settings.
Deleted system configuration preferences from library.
Anything else I should try? I am going insane. Thanks!

You need to delete the other wireless networks around you in your neighborhood .
The symptoms you are describing point to wireless interference from another network near you, a new wireless security system at the neighbors, or even a nearby cordless phone.
Some time ago, my network would suffer from intermittent sudden slow downs and disconnects. It was only by accident that I discovered that my neighbor...across the street....could literally knock me off my wireless network if he was in his front yard talking on his cordless phone.
All you can really do is keep trying different wireless channels to see if you can find some clear airspace or you run out of channels. If you happen to have cordless phones in your own house, you might try turning them all off for a few hours to see if that makes any difference in your wireless performance.
    AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab to get to the wireless settings page
Keep notes on which channels seem to work better than others and then concentrate on the best channels to narrow it down even further.

  • Wifi is not available in network options. How do I connect to wifi?

when I go to network there is no wifi in the list, Bluetooth is here but no wifi.  So how do I connect to wifi?

When you open System Information from the Apple in the upper left hand corner of the screen and then go to System Report > Network > WiFi, what shows up there?
