  • Network Manager Testing Issue

    Hi folks,
I have a bit of an issue regarding Network Manager. It refuses to connect despite the appropriate modules being active for all my interfaces (eth0 wlan0). It goes through the motions of connecting and tries for ages then says "network disconnected".
I am fairly certain that I have not done anything config wize (but I am open to suggestions) and this is only happening on my Gnome system (I am currently writing this on my XFCE Netbook). Has anyone had any issues re: the recent network manager upgrade on Gnome?
    Cheers,
    Scott
P.S. Once people begin to reply, if this is not an issue with the Testing repo, could the mods move this to the appropriate forum so I am not misleading anyone looking for real testing repo issues.

what version of networkmanager? -1 or -2?

  • [SOLVED] Network Manager cannot connect to wifi after suspend

    Hi,
There appears to be similar threads recently, but they relate to no wifi at all. I did some updates today, and now if I suspend or hibernate, network manager cannot reconnect to my wifi. It will (after a while) ask me to authenticate, but still fails. Nothing works except a reboot where it connects without issue.
It was fine yesterday, has only started today. Here is my pacman log for today's updates:

For those using the arch repo kernel the next release will solve this issue. So I suggest waiting for this (no more than a few days) and use the LTS kernel in the meantime (or using a fixed ath9k module if already built).
Thanks for that heiko. I thought that would be the case, hence I just waited.
    Will mark this as solved.

  • Network manager won't store my WIFI password

    hi everyone,
i seem to have a problem with my network manager (tried both the KDE network connection manager as well as the gnome nm-applet).
Whenever i want to connect to my wifi it asks for my WIFI password, although it's correctly stored in the network manager already and it won't accept it, the password prompt pops up over and over again.
I'm desperate, i don't know what else to do, or what's causing this problem.
I also started the nm-applet from the terminal and got this error message:
m-applet-Message: No keyring secrets found for SSID/802-11-wireless-security; asking user.
Gtk-Message: GtkDialog mapped without a transient parent. This is discouraged.
    does anyone have any ideas?
    many thanks in advance,
    theresa

Try to connect manually, open the terminal and issue the following:
ip link set <interface's name> down
ip link set <interface's name> up
    Select your AP:
    iwlist <interface's name> scan | grep ESSID
    Connect to it:
    wpa_supplicant -B -i <interface's name> -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/test.conf
    Then print the status:
    systemctl status dhcpcd@<interface's name>.service
    or
    systemctl status dhcpcd.service

  • Gnome shell network manager issues

I'm running nm-applet on Gnome Shell. A recent update solved my problems of clicks not registering in nm-applet.
However, there are still some issues which means I'm still using 'nmcli' to connect to networks:
1/ The list of connections is not scrollable. At home, even though my wireless network has the strongest signal, it's not listed near the top. In fact, it's listed below the bottom of the screen (there are a lot of wireless networks) and there's no way to get to it!
2/ It doesn't accurately show available networks. This maybe a "Suspend" issue, but the list of networks that nm-applet shows is not up to date. It shows my home network when I'm at work and random networks which are currently not in range too.
Is there some open bug report about this or is this something I've done?
Also, 'nmcli con list' seems to list saved networks and not available networks. Is that the intended behavior?
EDIT: The man page for nmcli does say this is the intended behavior and 'nmcli dev wifi list' is what I was looking for...

    BUMP..
The above behavior hasn't changed even after a few updates. Is anybody else experiencing these issues?
Will it help if I delete all the network manager config files? I'm thinking it might be some conflict of config files between nmcli and nm-applet...

  • Network manager in xfce doesn't connect but wifi-menu does?

I may be misunderstanding how to use this since I've never done wireless from the command line before, but here is my situation:
I just installed arch on my Acer Aspire One and used both the wired and wireless from the command line. I had never done wireless from the command line before and just followed the Beginners Guide and used wifi-menu to select the network to connect to. It was very very smooth and connected me in seconds. After installing xfce I decided I wanted a tray icon for selecting wireless stuff and so I installed networkmanager and network-manager-applet. After starting nm-applet it reported my wireless as disconnected (even though it was connected) and when I asked it to connect to my network it was unable to connect. I restarted the computer and still no success. While I can get by with wifi-menu, it would be awfully nice if I could get network manager to work with xfce. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
    Thanks in advance.

I switched to using wicd and after a little while of using it it seems to work pretty well. It works significantly better than NetworkManager and doesn't drop connections very often so long as the signal is good.
My one complaint is that every so often a process called wicd-monitor likes to start using 100% cpu on one of my cores. Since this is a netbook and power is critical, I usually end up killing the process or restarting wicd so that it stops draining my battery.

  • Network Manager driving me crazy (3 issues)

Hey guys I'm new here, hope you can help me
    nm-applet is driving me crazy!
First issue: when I boot nm-applet doesn't appear in my tint2 eventhough I'm connected. This don't appear all the time, it's random. I have to kill it and restart it to be able to see it.
I use openbox and I have this in .config/openbox/autostart
    (sleep 3 && /usr/bin/nm-applet --sm-disable) &
    Second issue:
I selected the save option for the password of my vpn but it won't save it... Or wait, yes it will.. But not all the time. It asks me for the pass sometimes, and sometimes not
    Third issue:
I thicked the "automatically connect to vpn for this connection" but guess what... It won't
Any idea about how to troubleshot this. I'm seriously considering pacman -R network-manager and pacman -S something else
    Thank you
Last edited by Truc (2014-03-06 21:17:51)

1st issue: run nm-applet from the command line (take it out of openbox's start file wherever that is) after you log in to see what's going on.
2nd issue: do you have gnome-keyring installed? I believe it should be started with by networkmanager when it's needed, but you may need to figure out how to start it on your own. I don't know how.
3rd issue: I believe the automatic connection to vpn on a specific network is triggered by networkmanager-dispatcher which is just part of the networkmanager package, but is its own separate service. When you enable/start NetworkManager via systemctl, it should enable/start 3 services - the dispatcher is one of them. Do you have that running?
I may be wrong about some of this; it's been a while since i've used NetworkManager.

  • (wifi) broadcom-wl or network-manager trouble not sure

I configurated my broadcom bcm4313 (4727) with broadcom-wl (driver recommanded for my needs by broadcom devellopers), up and running in network-manager (seen there to connect with ...) ... (Checked it with CalimeroTeknik today)
When I connect to my wifi relay (an adhoc by wifi), it try to connect and fail ... Does it mean that the manual configuration worked ?
Edit : seem to have made another wifi adhoc of the same name and key, how I change this line : # iwconfig wlan0 mode ad-hoc ???
Yes, your manual configuration worked just fine.
The IP address Gusar refers to, you still have to acquire from the router  - which is at the end of step 4 of the wiki. If it does not work like described in the wiki (#dhcpcd eth0), you have to start the dhcpcd daemon first by
    sudo /etc/rc.d/dhcpcd restart
Question 2: You only have to change the interface in the iwconfig line, since your wireless seems to be on eth0:
    iwconfig eth0 mode ad-hoc
However, you really dont need to do that since you already connected to the wireless "sharenet" according to your output.
So, just redo the steps and go the steps4 to the end to get an IP. If you see that working, you can ping any internet site to see if it works (or start any browser), as /dev/zero says. (if that works , your wicd should actually also work after network restart).
If it does not work, come back to us with the error you see plus the output of
    ip addr
    ip route

  • New network manager update disabling my wifi

    Hi.
Just want let you know that there is something wrong with new network manager. after last update my network was disabled and I couldn't turn it on, when downgrade to previous version is working again ok.
    My network card:
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N 2200 (rev c4)
if you need any more info let me know please...

Did you remove the network from the phone and then reset the network settings? Or, did you have to try and select the network again? You also just provided a little more information, you said that you are to the point of entering the password. At first it seemed that you weren't even finding the wifi. If you are getting to the password screen and it is showing an error, try power cycling your router. Unplug the router, leave it off for about 30 seconds and then restart it. After it is restarted, then try connecting the phone.

  • Network manager issues on Laptop

I'm using gnome shell from the testing and gnome-unstable repositories (the Arch way).
I'm having a lot of issues (wireless) with network manager:
1/ Shows home networks at work and work networks at home
2/ Keeps asking for key even though I'm entering the correct one while the same connection through 'nmcli' works just fine
3/ Doesn't show my saved networks and doesn't connect to them automatically. Again, I have to use 'nmcli'
I don't know if these are bugs with network manager or whether I did something wrong in the configuration files. In any case, I've decided to switch to 'wicd'.
However, I used to use 'wicd' on Ubuntu a few years ago and a problem was that I couldn't connect to VPN (which I need at work). This was the only reason I was hanging on to Network Manager. I looked online and this doesn't seem to have changed.
Are there solutions to connect to VPN (PPTP) without network manager. I remember trying the pptpd and kvpnc without much success. There was a plan on the wicd project page to implement PPTP VPN in 2008..does anyone know if this has been done already?

Well you could use wicd to connect to the access points then use vpnc for vpn.  You just need to create a config file for vpnc or from the command line.  I just did a quick search looks like the gentoo wiki page has a pretty good explanation for vpnc.

  • [xfce4] network-manager-applet not asking for Wifi password

I am running XFCE with  the gnome network-manager-applet and kwallet as password storage and I do not want to use the gnome keyring because it is making many problems with my current setup.
There are multiple ways to store passwords in NetworkManager. To save them plain in the config files is not an option for me. So I can put them in a password store or hack them in every time I want to connect.
While the gnome network-manager-applet does not work with kwallet I accepted to do all the hackery every time.
Problem: I even can not hack in the passwords.
If I try to connect the connection is disconnected immediately. The logs say, that "The name org.freedesktop.secrets was not provided by any .service files".
    Long story short:
    - NetworkManager needs the dbus service "org.freedesktop.secrets" to read passwords (via password store or via prompt)
    - kwallet does not announce "org.freedesktop.secrets" - this is done by the nm-plasma applet (which I can not run without hacking XFCE)
    - gnome-keyring announces itself as a secret agent but does not work with my setup
Do I need to write my own secret agent which only shows a password prompt and parses the input to NM or is there any option/tool/patch/hack/miracle that I have missed to use kwallet with gnome network-manager-applet or to get a password prompt without installing gnome-keyring?
    Thanks in advance

    add this to your start-up: gnome-keyring-daemon --components=gpg
    Edit: and install gnome-keyring ofc

  • Network Manager crashes when connecting to wpa wifi

I am trying to connect to my college's wpa secured wlan using network-manager-applet on a fresh cinnamon installation.  When I click on the secured network in the cinnamon control center, the program crashes.  I connect fine to the unsecured guest network.  I think I may not have all the proper GUI's installed because when i click the "Connect to a Hidden Network" button, the network manager also crashes.
Did I not install the right software or is this some strange bug?

    Hi,
I'm not sure if this is useful at all, but i had problems with nm-applet and eduroam(wpa) as well. I first thought it would be due to the latest update, but then remembered that I uninstalled "gnome-keyring" some days ago. Reinstalling it solved my problem.

  • [SOLVED] Network Manager & Arch Way

    Hi All
I am a noob Arch user. I installed Arch with Gnome 3 recently. I used to manually connect to WiFi for the first few days (just for fun) and then I decided to go with the netfcg+newlan way. I found it to be really slow. I then decided to take the information on Arch Wiki (that says network manager is faster) and installed network manager + nm-applet. I had no issues with WiFi configuration. Everything works for me. But I don't know what network manager is doing. I can know that if I want to. But why use a tool that hides things from me. Philosophically speaking, isn't network manager against the true Arch way? What do experienced Arch users think of this?

I did install it and it has been "bothering" me that I don't know whats behind this GUI. I simply clicked a few buttons and the network connected. Thats awesome. But I left ubuntu for the same reason: I don't know whats going on. I don't want to be dumbed down. On the other hand, I really did not like the netcfg way. It is slow. And since this is my laptop which I sometimes take to school, I want the ability to connect to different networks (with different security types, especially WPA). So netcfg with net-profiles seems like a good option (or network manager). There was no comment on the wiki about the speed of Wicd: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wi … nt_methods
According to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=117754 Wicd is better. But once again no comment on the speed. I want internet as soon as the laptop boots. Network manager does that. But to me, as a purist, its not in the Arch way. I want something with more control and more configurability.
So once again: Is Wicd faster than network manager?

    Hi there.
I am installing new notebook and I am stuggling with an issue for couple of days already.
I am on Cinnamon and I am using Network Manager.

I have searched forum here, but haven't found any solution so far.
When I select my network from NM applet, I never get asked for password. However, if I start nm-connection-editor from the command line, edit connection and password there, then all starts to work and there is no problem anymore. So the issue appears to be that NM never asks for password and therefore no connection can be stored.
I have read the wiki and have created org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.pkla in /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d directory.
    Some remarks:
    - please do not suggest to switch to wicd, I know about it, but I prefer to fix NM instead
    - I tried to remove my other computer's saved wifi and it exhibits the same behavior. It worked once, 100% sure about it.
    - It does not work also under regular Gnome 3 session, so it is not Cinnamon's fault.

Fixed!!!  Went back into the  dir: swtools/apps/fingerprint  and noticed a second file named updater.  Ran, rebooted.
Works.  Never would have seen unless I went back.

    Welcome to the Arch forums!
Your post does a good job providing a very basic idea of what is going on, but unfortunately not much more than that.  More information is required in order to properly diagnose this issue.  You should check if there are error messages in the journal, or any other indications as to why things might be failing.  Your computer typically makes an attempt at telling you what is going wrong.
From what you have posted though, it kind of sounds like you are trying to use two network management services at the same time.  If you use wifi-menu, you are essentially using the ncurses front end to netctl.  Netctl is basically just a collection of scripts that wrap the most basic networking tools.  If this is in use, then networkmanager is bound to fail as you then have two services competing (and likely failing) to control that hardware.
Check to see if you have more than one service trying to handle things.  You can run systemctl with no arguments to see everything that systemd wants to start.  Though if you use systemctl --type=service then you can have it tell you only about services (as opposed to all unit types, like mount, automount, device, socket files and more).
