Network monitoring for beginners

I guess the first question would be, what do you WANT to see from these monitors? Is there specific information you want to get from them?

Hello-
I am a novice who is responsible for a small network in a library.   I need to learn more about network monitoring.   I have installed the Spiceworks Network Monitor, and I have been a exploring  a little bit with MRTG.   My particular issue is that I do not know how to interpret the information from the monitors.  I have been searching for resources to help me with this and network monitoring in general, but I haven't been able to find much.  Can anyone recommend where I might be able to find some help.
Thanks,

  • WANTED - Network Monitor for E Series

Desperately want a network monitor for the E Series phone. This was a feature that you used to be able to activate on the 51/6100 range of phones (and a couple of others).
Does anyone know of one for the E60???????

and: 7110,6250,6220,6111,7370 (but just for a few months)

I knew that bit, just wondering if anyone knows any software that does the same.
I found a site, but they have taken it off recently, so can't get it!!!!!!!

  • Basic Network Monitoring for Cisco Operation Manager 2012

    Hello,
Please bear with me as i'm new the Operations Manager 2012 world. I've just installed operations manager 2012 in our environment and i've setup a network management point. I've discovered my networking gear which is primarily cisco equipment. The devices
are appearing as CERTIFIED. It appears that they are HEALTHY however in most cases i'm getting some arbitrary monitors. I have a 6509 switch where memory and processor appear to be being monitored out of the box. I'm receiving alerts and everything.
My question is how do I turn on monitoring for other discovered components. I seem to understand I can make SNMP monitors under the authoring pane if i know the OID. That sounds like it'd be tedious work for such a simple and basic monitor. However I was
under the impression I would be able to monitor a lot of these components with a simple click of a button. Is this not the case? I'm primarily interested in monitoring the state and performance of particular interfaces as well as the state of the power supplies
in our switches. Is there a guide that explains the basic principles of this. What are my options?
    Thanks!
    -Brandon

    Hi,
You will need to edit the discovery and broaden the range. You may use recursive discovery.
Recursive discovery will try to discover any other network devices it knows about through its Address Routing Protocol (ARP) table, its IP address table, or the topology Management Information Block (MIB) to grow the network map and present all applicable
    devices to you for monitoring.
You can also filter out devices that you don't want to be discovered by using properties such as the device type, name, and object identifier (OID). This is a handy option if you wanted to quickly discover all the network devices in your network except,
a small number or some with a specific criteria.
In really large networks with a lot of network devices, keep in mind that there is a default limit of 1500 network devices that can be discovered recursively. You can of course tweak this limit to suit your environment if you wish, but for most people, this
    won't be needed.
More details, please go through the article below:

  • OCEP for Network monitoring

    Hello everyone,
I am trying to build a network monitor which tries to filter critical mails using OCEP. I am using wireshark which writes the file to a csv file dynamically. I have created a csvgen adapter for input in OCEP. Currently I am just trying to take source ip address to csvgen adapter (declared ipaddress as char of length 10). I am getting error when I am trying to deploy the jar. This is the log:

The best choice depends on several things:
your network size and complexity, esp multi-vendor management needs,
whether or not you want servers and applications as well to be be monitored,
your ability to customize and configure free (open source) vs. wanting a vendor-supported product with easy out-of-the-box setup,
    etc.
SolarWinds certainly offers a strong product suite (NPM plus NTA for the functions you mentioned) although large setups can get pricey (I have seen some US$ 6 figures). For many small to medium enterprises it is a good solution and it offers nice integration pay as you grow.
On the open source side you can put together a solution based on several tools. For instance, Nagios + Cacti + ntop + RANCID all combined give you a lot of useful information. Cost of ownership may or may not be higher as you do all the integration work yourself.
Some people speak highly of What's Up Gold although it's a more basic product. Also, ManageEngine's tools are well-regarded.
Of course an all-Cisco shop is best served by Cisco's offerings.

  • New network (and much more) monitor for XFCE panel

A few years ago I wrote a tiny app to show a text network monitor in the XFCE panel, resembling the previous one I was familiarized with (in KDE?).
The past month I started fixing a bug and ended in a full rewrite, but keeping the original simplicity (at least in the panel bar) despite that now reports far more than the network activity.
The installation instructions are the same: download a single file (no dependencies), compile it, add a Generic Monitor Applet (XFCE) to the panel and configure it to load the new executable.
I have updated the wiki page, but the full instructions and code is now hosted at github: "Hacker's Monitor for XFCE". Yes, it has a new name also.
Here follows a screenshot with the mouse over the applet to open the tooltip (yes, I was intentionally doing a dd from /dev/sda into /dev/null ):

  • Scanning the network for devices with Network Monitor

At the moment there are no way to scan your network for devices. And I think there is a good reason for not doing so. If your users shut down their PC when their day is done - do you need an alert for that?
They way this is designed is for you to decide which devices is the most important, so much that it demands live monitoring.

Are they going to add the ability to scan the network for devices instead of having to manually add them? I've seen it in the inventory management but can't find a way to do it in the Network Monitor. I apologise if you can already do this but I haven't figured it out myself.

Thanks for the response Ralph but I am looking for a more personal experience someone may have managing 200+ Macs via the OS X server and what their specs are.

    Best,

  • How do I use my iMac(late 2009) as a monitor for my MBP(2012) or my MBP(late 2010) without software?

I currently have a late 2009 iMac, a 2012 MBP, a mid 2010 MBP and a MinDisplay Port (MDP) male to male cable. I am trying to either use the iMac a second monitor for one of the MBPs or mirror the display.
The iMac has a MDP port and is running OS X 10.7.5 (Lion)
The MBP 2010 has a MDP port and is running OS X 10.8.4 (Mountain Lion)
The MBP 2012 has a Thunderbolt port and is running OS X 10.9 (Maverics)
When I connect the 2010 MBP to the iMac with the MDP cable the screen of the iMac goes black and the MBP flashes blue. I have been looking for a solution and I have tried:
Rebooting them in the order of: connecting the cable, turing on the MBP, then turing on the iMac
Whilst they are on simply plugging the cable between the two
Connecting them with the cable while they are on, then pressing cmd-f1 on the MBP
Connecting them with the cable while they are on, then pressing cmd-f1 on the iMac
Pressing cmd-f2 on the iMac, whilst there are connected, only toggles a black screen on the iMac
Pressing cmd-f2 on the MBP doesn't do anything
Every time I connect the MBP 2012 to the iMac with the MDP cable, the MBP screen goes black and the computor screen becomes unresponsive but the screen stays on and I have to reboot the MBP.
I will really appreciate anyone who has any information on this topic.
    Thanks

If the iMac is a 21-inch model, not without using a product such as ScreenRecycler over a network.

  • Can I use My Ibook G4 as a Second Monitor For My Mac Mini G4

    Hi
I wonderd if theres any way of being able to use my 14'' Ibook G4 as a second monitor for my Mac Mini G4? I already have a Samsung SyncMaster 913n. Is there any way of doing this by firewire using both monitors, if not what cables would I need?
    Thanks

There is a application called Synergy which you may find useful. It allows the keyboard, mouse and clipboard to be shared across computers, and even different operating systems. It's not strictly what you have asked for as each computer still runs it's applications (and operating system) separately, meaning you can not drag windows between the screens, but by allowing you to copy and paste between the computers, and seamlessly slide your mouse and keyboard input between them you may get the effect you desire. Oh, and it is free and open-source, so why not give it a whirl?
You will need to connect the machines with a TCP/IP network, which can be done either with an ethernet patch cable, or alternatively as you suggest, using FireWire - these two articles may assist you in setting that up: IP over FireWire in Panther and Tiger.
As a point of note, a commercial program, MaxiVista allows exactly what you are looking for under Microsoft Windows.
    Hope that helps.

  • Using a 27" iMac as Monitor for PC

I am building a PC for Network Attached Storage (NAS) using FreeNAS:
    http://www.freenas.org/
Once it's all set up I'll just use the web/network interface to manage it.  But, as I assemble the PC I'll probably need a monitor to make changes to the BIOS settings.
I'm wondering whether I can use my iMac (iMac11,3) as a makeshift monitor for the PC.  Apparently it's possible to do this if the PC has a Mini DisplayPort.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924
My PC has the followoing video ports:
    - VGA
    - DVI
    - HDMI
Can anyone tell me whether I can use my iMac as monitor to a PC with one of these ports?
If so, can anyone recommend a cable to do so?  For example, this Mini DisplayPort <-> HDMI cable says it won't work for my purposes:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802 &p_id=5311&seq=1&format=2
"This device is not Bidirectional. It can only connect a Mini-DisplayPort source to an HDMI® display. It will not work in reverse."
I want to display my PC's VGA, HDMI, or DVI as the source to my iMac's Mini-DisplayPort, not the other way around.
    Thank you for your help.
      - nello

But that one doesn't support the 27" screen, you need Dual-Link DVI if it's going to work at all...
Note:  This product supports single-link DVI. Dual-link DVI and the Apple 27" Cinema Display are supported by the GTV-DVIDL-2-MDP.
    Which is even more money...

  • Using Acer LCD TV as monitor for mac mini

    Hi
I'm trying to use an Acer LCD TV (AL2671W) as a monitor for my mac mini.
The only way I can get it to work is booting the mini when connected to a different monitor then plugging in the AL2671W - this then works fine. If I boot when connected to the AL2671W I receive a No Signal message.
Any help would be much appreciated!

If you have a second computer at your disposal that can be networked to your mini, consider establishing a VNC connection between the two. You can then remotely make a resolution selection on the mini while the Acer TV is attached to the mini, even in the absence of a useable screen being displayed on the Acer. Once you have remotely made the selection of your choosing that gives a satisfactory display on the Acer, it should stay that way permenantly.

  • Can I use a PowerPC iMac as a monitor for my MacBook Pro?

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion. I need an external monitor for it and have an old iMac laying around that I'm wondering if I could use. The iMac is the first gen white square all-in-one screen one. It's a G5, 20" 1.8 GHz from 2005. PowerPC.
Can I connect my MacBook Pro to it to use as a second monitor? Or even to mirror the display? If so, what kind of connector cables do I need to make this happen?

You need to use a product such as ScreenRecycler over a network connection. All of these products require the capability to boot the iMac.

  • Error message when trying login to Network Monitor "oops something went wrong"

I am trying to get network monitor to work on my network. However, when installed I enter my credentials and get the error something went wrong. I am assuming we are blocking some traffic on the firewall or possibly even through a content filter. What I don't know is what url needs to be white-listed or which ports need to be opened for the application to work.
Firewall is off on the pc. I can authenticate when on a standard "outside link" But cannot when the same pc is on the LAN at work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
