Network on OSX 10.5.1

Hi I try to setup a network between two Mac Pro's using gigabit Ethernet.
But only one of them appears as shared on both computers.
On both the "share" settings are the same.
(only difference is that on is connected via port 1 and the other port 2)
I'm not using an crossover cable, as far as I know this isn't nescessary!
I hope someone can help me with this.

The problem is most likely due to the fact that you don’t have a local account on your Dell laptop. When you are prompted for a users name are you using domain\username? Give that a try and see what happens. As for seeing the Mac from your Dell that may a bit tricky as your Dell is set up for a Domain. Normally you should not have any problems accessing a Workgroup; however, since you are disconnected from your company’s Domain I am sure that your laptop is not too pleased and is balking when trying to browse your local network. One last item I just though of – do you have access to a local account on your Dell as you may run into a problem when using your Domain account as there won’t be a Domain controller to verify against.
Best of Luck –

  • Extend a network in osx mountain lion

I've just upgrade to osx mountain lion.  Apple care rep advises that with new os - once all my airports are reset - that mountain lion automatically "joins" and "extends" a wireless network.  I notice no increased extension to the network.

    Hello ben santa fe,
Nothing has really changed from Lion to Mountain Lion on the topic of "Extending". Same AirPort products, same AirPort Utility. Same software.
The "Extend" feature remains as it always has....a hub and spoke affair.
A "main" AirPort creates the network and various AirPorts can "extend" the signal, but all of the remotes communicate to the main AirPort...regardless of their location in relation to other remotes.
Not sure what you were hoping to see in the form of "increased extension" to the network. Can you clarify on that?

  • Can't connect to network in OSX - Parallels/Windows works fine

    Hi All,
My roommate is having kind of an odd issue with his MacBook. He can't connect to any WiFi network while in OSX. He has a full signal, sees the network, but just can't get on. He has Parallels and runs XP on the MacBook as well, and can connect to the network, and surf no problem. He was running Leopard, and we just installed Snow Leopard hoping that may fix the problem - but no dice. Still having the same problem. The router we use at home is an Airport Extreme, but he has the same issue with all networks.
I tried deleting the networks out of his history, and then reconnecting, but it didn't help. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance.
    Ben

    HI Ben,
No internet is like no tv, it sucky.
Try turning wifi off and on. Try moving closer to the wireless network, preferably the same room as the airport base station.
    if no change,
you could try opening safari. sense there is no internet connection, Safari will offer you the chance to run network diagnostics. Fallow the questions, and it cold very likely fix your issue.
If it doesn't, you could try a SMC reset , fallowed by a NVRAM reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
If it still isn't working you could try deleting airport from networking and re-ad it.
    open system preferences
    click on network
from the left hand column click on airport
    click on the minus symbol
    click on the plus symbol
    for interface chose airport
    for service name type airport.
    click ok
if you still can't connect try deleting the keychain entry for the wireless network:
go to the dock, click on Finder
    go to the menu bar
    click on the go menu
chose utilities from the go menu
in the utilities folder double click on keychain
when keychain opens , from the left hand menu click on "system"
in the search field , type in the name of the wireless network.
in the right hand column there should be one entry with the name of the wireless network. delete it.
I hope that helps, good luck!

  • Connecting HP Officejet 6100 to wireless network with OSX 10.9.5

    Running OSX 10.9.5.
I'm trying to connect HP Officejet 6100 to wireless network without HP software since the software claims it is not compatable with my OS.
The printer works fine when connected via USB.

    Hi @dj2thew,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums! I see you are trying to add your HP Officejet 6100 to your Mac running the Mavericks 10.9.5 Operating system.
Because you are using the Mavericks OS X you must install the printer using the Apple Updates. Please click on the link below, this document explains how to install the print driver on a Mac for a USB or a network connection. The OS X v10.9 Mavericks driver for your printer is available through Apple Software Update (ASU). Additionally, you can perform basic print jobs using AirPrint without installing a driver.
OS X v10.9 Mavericks: Installing and Using the Printer on a Mac
Once you have installed the OJ 6100, you may notice the features you once had are limited or there are workarounds, for scanning with or without HP Software see below:
How to Scan: OS X v10.9
    I hope this helps!

  • Not printing! Network with OSX 10.4 and 10.5 and 10.4 computer not printing

I have a very nice problem. I have two MAC´s (iMac G5 (OSX 10.5) and PowerBook G4 (OSX 10.4). Both in a wireless Network. Up to the date I installed 10.5 on the iMac G5 everything runs perfect. Now printing from the PowerBook G4 isn´t posible any more. The printer is connected ynd shown in PRINTERS & FAX but doesn´t print. All programms freeze at the moment I choose print. Printer is working for both ciompueters when connected directly to the PowerBook (OSX 10.4). It´s also possible to print from both computers if the Printer is connected to an Airport, but doesnt print at the momento the printer is connected to the iMac with OSX 10.5 running. Printer is shown on both computers no matter where the printer is connected. Drivers are new on both computers. The printer ist en EPSON Stylus Photo R300
    Who can help?

I just bought a new printer Canon Pixma iP4500 and everything is now perfect. An even the printer is a lot lot better than the old Epson One.

  • How to connect Photosmart C4795 to Wireless Network - Mac OSX 10.8.4

I am desperately confused here!  When I bought the printer 2-ish years ago I was able to set it up and have it connected to my network no problem.  Since then I have moved and updated my OS to Mountain Lion and lost my installation CD.  As of now, this is where things stand.
When I turned the printer on and connected it to my iMac via the USB cable, the computer found it and installed it with no issues.  I can print with no issues when the USB cable is plugged in.
Using the printers built in display, I have run the HP Network Configuration and the Wireless Network Test.  The printer can see my network, but it won't connect to it.  I have no bloody idea where I need to go to enter my network password so the printer can get online.
I've manually downloaded the HP Driver found at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907  and that put the HP Utility on my computer (which was already there) but I don't see any place in the utility software that would let me enter my network password or even configure network settings for the printer.
My router is an Apple Airport Extreme, and the firmware is up to date.  Everything on my computer seems to be up to date.  I just cannot for the life of me figure out how to get this thing online.  Any help would be greatly appreciated =)

Yup, there is no way to install your printer using OS X 10.8, sorry.
However, there are alternatives.  Here is the easiest way:
    1. On the front of the printer: Setup [Scan] > Wireless > Restore Defaults.
    2. In the same Wireless menu, start WPS Pushbutton.
    3. On your Mac go to Applications > Utilities > Airport Utility.  Choose your Airport and click Edit.
    4. In the menu bar at the top of your screen go to Base Station > Add WPS Printer.
    5. Choose the FIrst Attempt mode, then Continue.
Now your printer should be connected to your wireless network.  Next, go to System Prefs > Print & Scan, click the '+' sign to add your printer.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Creating a virtual private network from OSX Leopard to Windows Vista

Well as the title suggests, I need to be on the same VLAN with another user running Windows Vista. What solutions are there to accomplish this?
(HamachiX stops responding. The HamachiX CLI (command line) makes me login without me knowing how to. I'm ultimately trying to have a VLAN for some online gaming, NOT transferring files.)
    Thanks so much!

This issue is not resolved but is being closed due to lack of response.

  • Help!/Networking G5-OSX, G4-OS9, PC Windows

Cannot get these 3 computers all online. Not even sure I have everything plugged in the correct way.
Have G5 Imac w/OS 10.4 wirelessly online via Airport
    Have G4 PowerMac w/ OS 9.2 ethernet plugged into a 5 port 10/100 switch.
Have Window PC also plugged into the switch.
The switch is plugged into the Airport port
The Airport is plugged into the cable modem
The only computer online is the G5 w/Airport.
Would also love the 2 Macs to share a printer. They don't have to as I have a printer for each but the ink is going to break me and I don't understand why I shouldn't be able to share one
But with the two operating systems (even though Classic 9 is on G5 as well)maybe that isn't possible???
I have no idea what I am doing and how to fix this. Please is there someone who out there who does?

On the G4, open the File Sharing control panel and allow connections through TCP/IP; next, note down the G4's IP address. If it still doesn't show up on the G5, choose Connect to Server from the Finder's Go menu on the G5, provide the IP address you noted down, followed by an username and password set on the G4 in the File Sharing control panel.

  • Problems with WIRED XP & OSX network

    HI guys,
I know this subject has been covered a thousand times on these forums, but I've been through several pages and no-one has the same problem as I currently have, so I beg your forgiveness . . . . but have to post anyway!
I also realise this is probably more of a Windows problem . . . . . but won't even bother wasting time going to a Windoze forum . . . . the chances of getting someone to reply to a problem even daring to mention the word "MAC", is "NIL" I would guess!
    The problem is as follows:
I can't seem to set up my home network between OSX and my Windows XP box.
    So here's the setup:
    Apple PB 1.33Ghz, 1Gb RAM, OSX (10.4.1)
    Airport Extreme
PC: 1GHz running XP SP1, 1Gb RAM, 60Gb HDD etc etc
Network card is a D-Link DFE-530TX and is installed with no conflicts (apparently), and connected (via cat5 cable) to the AE baseStation via a Netgear 4 port 100base-T Broadband/router (DG 814).
I've set up a shared folder from my XP user account and even IT's not seen when I choose "View Workgroup Computers".
I can ping the loopback (127.0.0.1) and it's fine. . . . . I can ping all IP's (192.168.0.1 etc) and they respond on both Mac and XP, so I'm fairly sure all cable's etc work OK, and that everything is "Talking" to each other.
I've downloaded Sharepoints and installed that on OSX, and when I go to my Mac "Network", I'm able to "see" my PB fine . . . . but not XP.
As I mentioned earlier, I'm SURE it's an XP problem, but it was working fine between two XP machines, and NOW - since moving house - it doesn't!
Any idea's why I can't see even the XP share on the XP machine?
Maybe if I can get this sorted, it'll appear on the PB's network?
Thanks for any advice anyone can give . . . .. . oh and Merry Xmas to all & a very Happy 2006 . . . . may we all get everything we wish for next year!

  • Attempting to Connect to Network Shuts down Internet Connection

I am setting up a G4 400 MgH Mac with AGP graphics to get on a network of computers. This originally came from a college where it was on a network running OSX and OS9.1, and I have added a 100 GB hard drive on which I installed OX10.4, and upgraded to OS9.2.2.
It is very odd, as when I try to connect to the network through the ethernet connection in starting up in OS9.2.2, it will connect to the other computers and to the internet without problems, and does not affect the internet connection. However, when I start up in OSX, all the other computers on the network lose their internet connection immediately when this computer boots up into OSX. I can, however, connect to the other computers on the network, but cannot connect to the internet. I am puzzled as to what resource in OSX must be damaged to cause such a problem. I have tried reloading Tiger, and have used Disk Warrior, but the problem is the same.
I would welcome any thoughts on how to fix this so we can get this added to the graphics network at our school.
    G4/1GHz, 7600 w/G3/500 MHz , G4/733 MHz Server   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Only thing I can think of is that the AGP in OSX must have a Network setting that is grabbing an already used IP, or perhaps even the IP of the Router, or perhaps is set to Share the Internet connection.
I'd first off uncheck all ports in Network Port Configurations, reboot, for a try check on Ethernet in Port congigs again.
2nd, I'd try giving the AGP a Manual IP above the possible range handed out by the router.
3rd, I'd make a new User and see if the same thing happens.
If that doesn't work, I'd try trashing these and rebooting...

  • How can I automount a network share in Finder?

Currently I have to browse my network computer under "SHARED" and manually drag/drop the shared folder into Finder under "DEVICES".
Is there a way to do this automatically?

    Nope again.
Finder doesn’t have any option to display Network Share, only Connected Servers.

Ive been searching for a solution for this since Tiger. At least they fixed a number of Network share issues with Leopard, but they still dont have this fixed.

  • Opening a .mov file on a Mac across a Windows network causes hang

QuickTime player hangs when I try to open a .mov file on a networked Mac OSX machine from my Windows XP machine. This happens 80-90% of the time; that is, not every time, but most of the time.
I've tried this from 2-3 different machines, and get the same result.
Interesting thing is that, if I'm viewing the directory that the .mov file comes from in Windows Explorer, Windows Explorer also hangs - so it looks like something bad in going on in the Windows networking layer.
File opens fine when I open it locally or on another Windows machine on the network.
We're actually accessing the QT SDK from an app we're developing. We first noticed this behavior in our app, and decided to see if we could repro the problem in QT player. Sure enough, we could.
Is there somewhere else I can log this message so that it will come to the attention of the SDK group? This a major problem for our app that I need to resolve one way or another.

A MOV. file can be anything.
I would suggest you download and install Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.

  • Osx 10.6 burn dvd - different machines

    Hi there forum,
to help out my father-in-law, who is a bit tired generally and has been wasting 18months trying software changes because he doesn't believe his PC burner is busted, I said I'd help. He, for some reason, wants to burn MP4s to DVD.
I have a OSX.6 MacBook with SuperDrive without iDVD and a separate, not networked, MacMini (OSX.?) with ComboDrive and iDVD.
but I've heard such good things about iDVD.
Any tips on how I can quickly and easily get a flashdrive mp4 onto a DVD with these tools?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
Yes - but I'll doubt the Quality..
In iMovie - Share/Export as QuickTime
    - as .mp4 / H.264
Save it onto a Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted USB-Hard Disk / Memory
I think iDVD should be able to import this and create an usable DVD from it.
Save as a DiskImage - first and test this so that DVD Player tool plays it OK.

  • Use a windows dvd drive to install bootcamp windows

    Hi!
I know it is possible, I looked up google about it but it's pretty difficult to find...
My macbook's dvd drive is broken and I don't have enough money to buy another one nor another external dvd drive. So I would like to use my girlfriend's laptop dvd drive to boot up windows install on my macbook.
How do you think I could do it???
    Thanks a lot!

    Tom:
Unfortunately it is impossible with the current procedure of boot camp installation of Windows. This is because the drivers for the ports (USB/Firewire) are not installed until Windows is completely installed first on an intel Mac.
Now, if you are planning on installing windows as virtual machine via Parallels or VMWare Fusion then there may be a way to do so by using the windows pc over the network by OSx.

  • HT4356 I got a new wireless modem. The HP 8600 no longer works and is not seen as an airport printer. The diagnostics on the printer say it is connected to the wireless.

Suddenly no wireless printing works. The printer is a HP 8600e and the wireless is turned on and the printer itself can connect to the network, but OSX no longer sees it as an airport printer and nothing prints. I've tried all the Apple support docs without success.

An old addage of troubleshooting is "First, fix what you most recently changed."
All the driver uninstall etc, was probably unnecessary.
Power cycle the router (wireless modem).
    Power cycle the printer.
Now check that the printer is in the local subnet of the router.
(local subnet means router is something like 192.168.1.1, your computer is something like 192.168.1.2, and the printer is something like 192.168.1.3 - only the last part - 192.168.1.x - is allowed to be different).
Add the printer using the default printer browser window.
If this doesn't work, Reset Printing system and re-add.
