Network option missing in system preferences

I have .mac and the sharing options in the system preferences window but no network option. Also when I select "open network preferences" on my airport list it doesn't open anything. I may of deleted the option but I am unsure. Can anyone help me out? I am not using time machine yet I need to get a external hard drive before I can lol
Anyone help me please!

When you open the Network dialog, be sure Airport is turned on and check Ask to join new networks.
Also check "Show Airport status in menu bar" for convenience.
If you click A"Advanced" you should see your list of Preferred Networks unless you lost them.
Be sure under the TCP/IP tab you have selected "Using DHCP" and nothing else.
If your Airport system is encrypted, you either need the password and encryption type/level or you can turn off the encryption as a test (but don't leave it off).

    Hi jenette,
If you are having issues using an HDTV via HDMI as an external display to your MacBook Air, you may find the following article helpful:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5019
(Note: You will generally only see the arrangement option in Displays when you are configured to use the external display in Extended Desktop mode; there is no arrangement in Mirroring as both screens are showing the same image.)

If, while in System Preferences, you click View -> Customize does it show up then?

  • Wifi option disappeared from system preferences network tab

I used wifi at home in the morning, with no problem. I used ethernet during the day at work. When I got home, wifi wasn't working. At first, it was still an option in the Network tab of System Preferences (along with Ethernet, Firewire & Bluetooth PAN). When I clicked on 'Assist Me,' and started the process, I wasn't able to give the information needed. When I clicked 'Go Back' until I got to the main Network screen, the 'WiFi' option was no longer present. It is also not an option with I click on the "+" button to add a network option. In addition, on the top bar, the WiFi icon is greyed out, with an 'X' in it. Clicking on it shows: "WiFi: No Hardware Installed."
To add to the fun, when I called Apple Support, he had some resets in mind to try, but my computer will not stay off. Clicking 'Shut Down,' turns it off, but then right back on. Holding the power button turns it off, but he had me unplug the power for a minute, then plug it back in. When I do plug back in, it restarts again, on its own.
Any help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

In many cases, this issue is caused by a hardware fault. A short circuit or a microscopic break in a solder joint may open and close depending on temperature, making the failure intermittent.
Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already taken. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. If you can connect to the Internet via Ethernet, Bluetooth, or a USB network device, make sure all available OS X updates are installed. If Wi-Fi is your only means of network access, skip this step.
    2. Reset the NVRAM.
    3. Reset the System Management Controller.
    4. Start up in Recovery mode. In the menu bar of the OS X Utilities screen, there's a Wi-Fi menu. If it works, selectInstall OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
    5. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • Energy Saver Options Tab missing from System Preferences Pance

Recently I upgraded with Combo Update Snow Leopard 10.6.2 on my Mac Pro and now I find that I have no Options Tab in the Energy Saver Pane of System Preferences. All the options that used to be available there cannot now be accessed. Sleep\Wake is functioning fine, and I can't remember what settings I had or even used. It has not been critical for me so I rarely check these options. It is possible that the tab disappeared when I applied the latest Security Update a few days ago - I'm not sure. Since the big weekend storm here I want to use the automatic restart after power failure feature that I think lived behind that tab. Thanks for any help.

I should say that I rarely, if ever, use the lower missing options mentioned above. If I am accessing the Mac Pro from my other local computers I just wake up the Mac Pro. And I can't ever remember wanting my computer to restart after a power failure. If we have a power failure in this area, it is likely to come back on and then just as suddenly go off again. Not a good thing, I would imagine, for delicate electronics. Usually I wait 30 minutes to an hour after the power resumes in my home before powering up any electronic equipment.
I do wonder why the options disappeared though.

  • My network button in my system preferences is not there.

I went on to my system preferences to turn on my ethernet for xbox live and therefore had to go on network. What I saw was that the network icon was missing and when I searched on it through my computer it didn't show up. This is a brand new computer with OSX Snow Leopard (I haven't downloaded lion yet). Help is much appreciated.

    You’re welcome.

  • Icon missing from System Preference on MacBook Pro. Please Help

The icon for my mail, contacts and calendars is no longer under my System Preferences. Can someone help me get it back? Thanks.

If you're running the OS version in your profile, you never had that icon. Assuming the profile is wrong, do as follows.
    Select
    View ▹ Customize...
from the System Preferences menu bar. If the missing icon appears, check the box next to it, or click Show All. Then click Done.

  • Why trackpad wakes iMac up from sleep after activating wi-fi despite I've unchecked this option at  bluetooth System Preferences?

In the bluetooth advanced options at system preferences I've unchecked the item "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer".
My iMac is running Lion and sleep mode works fine, i.e. trackpad doesn't recall it from sleep, the Mac's back panel is cold and it takes a little delay to finally wake up.
Nevertheless, I've noticed that trackpad is able to wake my iMac up and the back panel is still warm when wi-fi is active. It seems to me that only the display sleeps.
Is there anything I forgot to do to have iMac full sleep mode even with wi-fi active? Note: wi-fi is only active, I'm connected to nothing.

  • File Sharing Missing from System Preferences Sharing

Hello, I am running MAC OSX Server 10.5.8. When I open System Preferences and click on Sharing I do not see the option to enable File Sharing. What must I do to get that to show up in the list? Right now my list looks like this...
    __ DVD or CD Sharing
    __ Screen Sharing
    __ Remote Login
    __ Remote Management
    __ Remote Apple Events
    __ Bluetooth Sharing
That's it. No File Sharing and everything I have searched to this point makes me believe it should be there.
Also, I have enabled AFP, NFS, SMP in the Server Admin. I have also turned off Firewall just to see what happened. Nothing.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Join existing network option missing from Airport Extreme

I am resetting an Airport Extreme because of network issues (not the airport side). It used to join an existing network which is still there. but now, when i go to set it up, the only options are Create a Wireless Network, Participate in a WDS network, and Extend a Wireless Network. I can not extend because of the way our network is set up. Can anyone tell me how I can get the plain old Join and Existing Network option back? I miss it...

emcfins, Welcome to the discussion area!
Unlike the AirPort Express (AX), the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does not have the ability to join a wireless network as a client.
The only way the AEBS can wirelessly join a network is if it is configured to participate in a WDS network (802.11g mode) or extend a Wireless Network (802.11n mode).

  • "Preferred Network" option missing from Airport tab

My computer was just joining networks, so I switched my MPB to "By Default, Join: A specific network". Now I find that I've got to tell my computer to join the wireless network at work. Since I'd like my computer to join both my home networks without interaction from me I read the help file to figure out how to do it. The help file said to choose "Preferred Networks" from the "By Default, Join:" popup menu, but the popup menu on my computer only had one choice, "A specific network".
Anyone know what might have happened to the other options in that popup menu?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Replying to my own post, bad form...
I don't know why "Preferred Networks" was missing from my "By Default, Join:" menu, but I discovered that I could get the option back by creating a new location and migrating my old settings to the new location.

  • Built in microphone option gone from system preferences.

I was having trouble trying to connect my guitar to the mac pro and i had to mess with the sound and the system preferences.
The Built-in microphone option on system preferences is gone. How do i get it back?

Try this Reset and look for it in About this Mac > System Report > Audio
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

  • There is no "find my iPhone" option in the system preferences iCloud window on my iMac.

It is turned on (as are location services) on my iPhone? and there is a "find my mac" option in the iCloud system preferences window but no "find my iPhone"? All is up to date! All is turned on! Thanks.

There is no Find my... app for Mac. The "Find my Mac" service allows your Mac to be found, but is not actually an app. To view the location of your devices, you have to go to http://icloud.com. This is the computer equivalent of Find my iPhone.
