Network Preferences pane gone mad

Hi All,
After I ran an ISP supplied software CD my Network Preferences pane just went mad. Every time I open the pane immediately a window drops down carrying the message
"Your Network Settings has been changed by another application"
I click "OK' but a fraction of second later the same message drops down again. Click "OK" and the sequence repeats again; and again; and again.
In effect this prevents me from changing any Network settings manually (when the message is shown everything is blanked out)
Unfortunately I forgot to run uninstall before cancelling the service and returning the software CD to the ISP. Now I have trouble getting any information what files might have been installed.
Any ideas where to look for and that files to delete to get rid of the issue???
Thank you in advance.
Ivo

  • Built-In Ethernet Port Doesn't Show Up In The Network Preference Pane

My ethernet port no longer shows up in the Network preferences pane under Network Status. The status Airport and the Internal Modem are still displayed though. Plugging in an ethernet cable causes my machine to crash; sometimes I get a message that I need to hold down the power button to reboot, and other times command line-like text is displayed on top of whatever was on screen.
The only change I've made to my system since last using a wired connection was installing Security Update 2006-001 on March 1st and OS X Update 10.4.5 on February 14th. After running the 10.4.5 updater, my machine initially refused to reboot. On the first attempt, it played the start up chime, but the screen remained black. The second time, the Apple logo appeared, but the spinning pinwheel never did. The third attempt was successful and my system appeared to be functioning normally.
How do I get my ethernet port to work again?

Does "Built-in Ethernet" show up as a choice in the 'Show:" popup? If so, is it configured as you would expect? For instance, if "TCP/IP" is set to use DHCP, do you have an IP address, subnet mask, etc.? There is an "off" setting for TCP/IP; make sure that hasn't been selected somehow.
There is also an "Assist Me" button that will let you launch the diagnostics app. Does this also crash the Mac? If not, what are the results of its tests?
Also, you may want to do a permissions repair with Disk Utility if you haven't done this since applying the updates.
If you still get crashes, there may be a conflict with a log-in item, particularly if you have any third party ones. (Check that in the "Accounts" pref.) One way to diagnose things like that is by creating a new test account & logging into it. If the problems go away, you can assume a user cache, .plist, or login item is the problem.
If none of this turns up anything, you may need to reinstall the OS. Short of that, you can try downloading the 10.4.5 combo update & running it. It replaces more components than the "delta" update so it just might do the trick. Besides, if you end up having to reinstall the OS, having the combo version handy will save you the time of downloading & installing any incremental updates to get back to 10.4.5.
As always, backup all important files before applying any updates.
    Good luck!

  • I can't connect to the internet. I keep getting an 'error in the network preferences pane'

    Hi
I am having difficulties connecting my 2102 macbook air to the internet using 10.9.1 mavericks.  The problem is that when I select the networck in the preferences networks panel, the panel extends down and says
    Preferences Error
There was an error in Network perference pane.
my machine keeps serching under the network menu item but it cannot connect to any network.   I can connect tho this network no problem using my iphone or through my main computer which has a wired link.
I have tried an apple hardware test which showed up as having no problems.
    What should I do?

Some users with various Wi-Fi problems have reported that they were given the following instructions by Apple Support, sometimes with success. After completing the procedure, you'll have to recreate all your settings in the Networkpreference pane. Make sure you know how to do that before you begin. Taking screenshots of the preference pane may be helpful.
    Step 1
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "SystemConfiguration" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot and recreate the network settings.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 2
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 3
    Reset the PRAM.

  • .mac preference pane gone!

I accidentally deleted my .mac preference pane, so now I can't get to it anymore. Where can I download it to restore it for my 10.4.11 Mac OS?

    Get Pacifist...
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
then extract/install what you need from your Install Disc.
Type .mac or PreferencePanes into it's search bar.

  • Ethernet is unavailable, according to an network preferences pane.

I have been trying to connect my iMac to a NETGEAR wireless router by ethernet. I have used the internet connection wizard in OS 9.2.2 to configure the settings, but when I launch a pane describing the connection settings, a message comes up saying ethernet is not available. I have attempted to check to see if Apple Talk is trying to use it, but couldn't open Apple Talk.
The light on the router lights up as green (indicating 100 Mbps connection active) but the iMac won't connect. I can't recall whether the iMac shows up when I view the router settings via my Macbook, but I will post more details soon, after attempting again.
The strange thing is, that many months ago my mum and I took it to the Apple Store in Bluewater, where I believe it connected to their network quite happily, using ethernet of course. I believe there is no problem with the cable or the router, as they both function fine with my Macbook, and my mum's.
We need the iMac for OS 9 applications, and I wish to upgrade it to OS X 10.3, but wanted to check that the firmware is sufficiently updated first.

There are situations where an older Mac needs to use a crossover Ethernet cable. A normal router to computer connection should not, but I don't know your exact setup.
I believe there is no problem with the cable or the router, as they both function fine with my Macbook
More recent Macs switch their Ethernet port automatically.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2274
As a test of the old iMac's Ethernet port, you can connect it directly to the MacBooks Ethernet port with a normal Ethernet cable. Turn ON file sharing on the MacBook (in System Preferences Sharing pane) and try to connect from the iMac to the MacBook. For Mac OS 9, use Network Browser under the Apple menu, and enter the MacBook's specific IP address.

  • Network Preferences Pane Pop-Up

My internet connection has been fluctuating quite a bit to the point that it occasionally stops completely. I was reading on the forum that many people were having this same issue and some suggested changing the channel. In trying to do that, I went to System Preferences and clicked the Network icon and every time I do this a small window pops up saying "Your network settings have been changed by another application." I click the "OK" button, the window goes away and instantly pops up again.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Network System preferences pane missing

Went to adjust network preferences and unable to find network system pre. pane. May have deleted it accidently.
Do not have high speed connection so most of my updates from 10.3.7 to 10.3.9 would have to be done all over again.
Is there better alternative than a total reinstall of the OS?

    Douglas,
Do you see a Network Preference Pane in your Macintosh HD/System/Library/PreferencePanes Folder?
If not, it is probably gone and you can replace it by extracting the file from your Panther System Disk with Pacifist.

  • Network/airport preference pane

    10.4.10
In the Airport window of the network preference pane there is an options button that should allow the user to set options such as what to do if no preferred network is found.
I am not sure I have ever used this before, but now I want to, I find that clicking the options button does exactly nothing.
Has something gotten broken in the lastest release or have I got a corrupted file somewhere?
    Thanks

Has something gotten broken in the lastest release or have I got a corrupted file somewhere?
Corruption methinks, most likely one of these...
    /Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
I assume you already fixed permissions.

  • Unable to access Network Preferences

When going into network preferences I am recieving a message: "You cannot open Network Preferences pane because it is not availible to you at this time."
Because of it I cannot access a lot of components in the system preferences. I made sure The wifi is working since I can browse websites. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is solved: it was a policy set that I wasn't aware of.

  • 'Options..' button in Airport Preference Pane doesn't work.

While in the Network preference pane located within your System Preferences, if you double-click on Airport while in the Network Status view, there is a 'Options...' button at the bottom of the screen. For a while now, after clicking on this button, nothing happens. Does it work for anyone else?

According to Adobe they have a bug fix in with Apple. I think it relates to iOS 8. I do not know if any progress has been made. I am very much looking forward to this being fixed as well. In the meantime it looks like my current folio in production is going to be heavy in file size.  I wonder if any progress has been made?

  • Help with Preference pane DNS settings for Mail

I have a mail (not Apple Mail) issue with my Entourage Mail. I keep getting
the following error message and I have verified the server settings in my
mail accounts are correct for ATT that uses pop.att.yahoo.com. I manage to
get mail most of the time but I still get the following error message:
    Error Description
    Error:
Entourage cannot find the server. Verify the server information is entered correctly in the Account Settings, and that your DNS settings in the Network pane of System Preferences are correct.
    Explanation:
    Could not retrieve mail
    Error: -1370
My System Preferences/Network/Advanced/DNS point to my 2wire Gateway combo
modem/router. The router is set for Automatic DNS. I tried changing it to manual
and it did not works any better.
If I change the DNS setting in the preference pane in OS X, will it really use that
DMS address and bypass the router?
I played around with the namebench utility
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/32784/namebench and each time you
run it, namebench makes a better recommendation - saying something is faster
    than the previous recommendation.
I am lost on what I need to do correct the Network pane of my System Preferences.
Should it point to the router or to good DNS?
I do not think this is a Microsoft Entourage issue.
Have others seen this issue or is unique to my setup.

Going to sleep on and see how it works in the morning.
The problem is solved and I have checked the Yes button that my
question has been answered. The following is a copy of a posting
two days ago to the Microsoft Entourage group that should work
just as well for Mail users.
If you are tied of getting the following Entourage error
message -3170 over and over again, read on.
    Error:
Entourage cannot find the server. Verify the server information
entered correctly in the Account Settings, and that your DNS
settings in the Network pane of System Preferences are correct.
    Explanation:
    Could not retrieve mail
    Error –3170
Thanks to a tip from Diane Ross I have gone two days without
    getting the error message.
First, I know the Account Settings for my ATT DSL service
have been correct for some time and have not changed.
The short version of the fix that worked for was to open
the OS X 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard) System Preferences/
Network/Advanced/DNS panel and add some better Domain
    Name Servers from my location.
The default (or before) OS X setting was:
    DNS Servers: Search Domains:
    192.168.1.254 gateway.2wire.com
Note both were dimmed. The server listed tells OS X to use
the ATT provided combo 2wire modem/router for my DSL service.
The change that seem to have worked for me was to leave the
Search Domain the same; however, I added some good servers that
bypass the 2wire gateway with its automatic DNS setting.
    DNS Servers: Search Domains:
    208.67.220.220 gateway.2wire.com
    208.67.220.222
    65.68.49.51
    192.168.1.254
I found the ‘good’ or better DNS Servers by making several runs
using the free Google utility called namebench 1.2
    <http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/32784/namebench>
This utility takes some time and will make suggestions from your
location. If you add the namebench recommendation and run it
again it will find a better recommendation. I had to make several
runs to find the better DNS Servers for my location. The first or
primary is called OpenDNS, the second is a backup for the OpenDNS
and the third is SBC Global TX now owned by ATT and I live in
Texas. Note I ended with the default IP address.
FYI, I tied using the selected servers in the 2wire gateway in the
manual mode rather than the default automatic mode and it just
did not work right. Some pages would not open and others were
slow. For this reason I run the router in the automatic mode for
DNS and control things using the OS X Network preference pane.
The addition of preferred DNS Servers in my Preference seems
to have slowed down and hopefully stopped Entourage 2008
    version 12.2.4 -3170 error messages.

  • MacBook (ML) won't connect to Wi-Fi, no network preferences, no Spotlight

    Hi,
First of all, thank you for taking the time to read and help ! :-)
I have not been able to find any kind of solution to my problem, because I did not find anyone with all these problems at once.
Here's what's wrong: out of the blue, my mid-2009 Macbook (white unibody) won't recognize any network (WiFi or Ethernet), refuses to load the Network preferences pane, and won't allow Spotlight to work (is "loading" everything on the right side of the upper bar, including the clock...). The Energy Saver Preferences pane seems to be out too.
I just upgraded my Macbook RAM, and subsequently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, but it had worked fine for a week (granted, a week of not much use).
Booting seems to take more time too, so I'm considering a system repair or whatever the name is, but I'd like to understand the issue, and how to avoid it in the future !
Moreover, I'm not sure on how to repair my OS without any network .......
Thank you for the help ! ;-)

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Can't lock network preferences

I recently upgraded my MBP (A1398) to yosemite. Somehow, the padlock that is normally present at the bottom of the network preferences pane is missing. Any thoughts on how to reenable the padlock? I would like to enter the admin password to make any changes.
I have ControlPlane installed for automatic proxy switching - could this be the cause?

In the Security & Privacy preference pane, unlock the settings, then click the Advanced button and check the box marked
Require administrator password for access to locked settings

  • Network preferences unlocking itself

After logging in, I'm finding that the Network preference pane has unlocked itself. This is repeatable.
I'm having other odd network issues, and want to keep things locked down as much as possible.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

After logging in, I'm finding that the Network preference pane has unlocked itself. This is repeatable.
Why does it matter? I've always found those locks annoying and useless. It's not real security, if that's what you're expecting it to be. If you want to be sure other people aren't messing with your settings, don't let them use an admin account on your machine. Let them use a guest account or give them a standard account.
I'm having other odd network issues, and want to keep things locked down as much as possible.
Locking that lock won't solve network issues... what are those issues? Post details and someone can help.

  • MacPro v1.1 Ethernet not working nor is it visible in network prefs pane

    Hi,
I'm having trouble with my MacPro. I've been using the wireless connection and all is fine, however I decided to speed up the transfer of files between it and my Macbook Pro by connecting together with an ethernet cable. It doesn't seem to work. This is the first time I've tried to use the ethernet...
*There is no ethernet connection visible in the network preferences pane, only airport and firewire. Normal?.*
*How can I get the ethernet connection recognised and working?*
I've checked the ethernet cable with the laptop, connecting to a router and I can use the internet etc.
System Profiler recognises a ethernet card.
Thanks for any help you offer,
