Network PrefPane Options inactive

On one of two PowerBooks I maintain, I can't get WiFi (Airport) to work in Internet Cafes. It works fine at home and if I set up a new user at the Internet Cafe. This would seem to rule out hardware problems and most software.
So I started digging around and the only difference I could find was that the Options… button in the Network PrefPane (System Preferences) won't activate.
I tried to remove/replace the Network PrefPane, but so far Apple won't let me (did Bill Gates sign on at Apple?).
Any hints on what to do? Oddly it's my girl friends computer

If I remember right there "may" be a problem if you have a proxie settings enabled.
System Preferences/ Network/ Advanced/ Proxies. Can't remember which one or if it was an issue in 10.7 or 10.6. Just make sure their all unchecked and try again.
You might try a search in these forums for more information. Different fix's for different issue's.

  • MacBook won't boot to HDD or detect network boot option

    Hello,
    I have a MacBook 4.1 with a 2.4 Ghz Intel C2D, 2Gb of RAM, 250Gb HDD running with 10.5.3.
My main issue is that whenever I try booting my MacBook to the hard drive the MacBook gets hung up. This happens at the grayish screen with the large apple picture in the middle and the spiny loading thing. This seems to be happening every time.
Also, my MacBook isn't detecting the network boot option when it should be.
I'm able to boot to a CD just fine.
Anyone have any suggestions? I'd like to try and get it going to the hard drive since I have some documents I'd like to get off. I did manage to get it working for a couple of hours. I did that by removing one of the RAM cards and then resetting the PRAM.
    I'd appreciate anyone's help.
    Thanks,
    Smerky

On your desktop, double click "Install Mac OS X". Enter your administrator password and wait for your mac to restart. After that navigate to Utilities-->Disk Utility.

  • Small Network Server Options - Advice?

I have a small group of macs ranging from first-gen Powermac G4s to relatively new imac G5s that I would like to set up on a legitimate network. Currently I have them connected on a networked Lacie external-HD - Which works for the most part, but I worry that it isn't very stable. As I was looking into my options for servers it occurred to me that I have no idea what to look for, or more importantly, if a server is really what I need.
If anyone reading this happens to have a few extra minutes I would really appreciate your input.
All of our computers are running on OS x 10.4 or later. The computers are used for a Yearbook program, so we have to have a central storage location for all of our photos and spreads so that they may be accessed from any terminal. Adobe InDesign and Photoshop are the primary applications.

Each year we need storage for 300-500 InDesign spreads as well as well over 5000 hi-res .tif photos, out current shared drive holds around 340 gigs of files, so a TB drive is probably necessary (that's what we're running on right now).
The only real problem our network is having right now occurs when our computers go to sleep. They apparently lose their connection with the external drive, and then crash InDesign when the computer is woken, meaning we have to recover the files every time.
Similar problems with inactive connections seem to be pretty common with our current set up, would an xserve avoid these sorts of issues?

  • Laserjet P3005dn network configuration options missing from I/O menu

I acquired a Laserjet P3005dn that should be networkable, and has an Ethernet port in the back, but when turned on, there is no network configuration in the menu.  From the menu, I choose Configure Device, I/O.  The only option is "I/O Timeout".  The "Embedded Jetdirect" option is not there.
I tried to do a cold reset, but it made no difference.  Can this be fixed?

I see that this is a commercial LaserJet printer.  It would be best to post in the commercial LaserJet forums.

  • Network Destinations options disappeared

    Hi,
Two weeks ago, I was travelling to another country and inserted a different SIM and installed it's settings, but when I came back and installed the orignal SIM, I lost some of the selection options Network Destination for Exchange and OVI Maps only
Previously I could see different options under Network Destinations such as 'Data Package' and access points which I had connected to previously. Now I only see 'Internet' and this has only affected the two applications mentioned above. I also have Hotmail & Gmail which give me the other options so I find it strange why has this happened to Exchange and OVI Maps only (even after updating the maps application).
This is preventing me from using my service provider's Data Package connection for these apps. I've contacted the provider and installed the default configuration settings recieved via SMS but that didn't help
Would apprecaite if someone could help.
    Thanks

I completely forgot to mention that I have an E72.
I figured out the issue, that the Data Package  is not defined as an access point under Internet under Connections. However when I try to add a new acces point, the menu hangs. I can only press the Home key and do other stuff but the connections menu hangs and I cant use the  Back or Options key. Same thing happens when I try to add a Multimedia Acess Point or a Wap Access point.
The only solution is to restart the phone and go back into Connections via Control Panel but I can't add a new Access Point. Help would be greatly appreciated.
Btw I haven't updated to the new firmware. Does that fix the problem?
    Thanks

  • [Solved] systemd - network-online.target inactive dead

Still trying to get familiar with systemd after years with Ubuntu.
I have Crashplan installed and it's systemd service unit has the following line to wait until the network comes online.
    After=network-online.target
However, this doesn't seem to be working.  While trying to investigate this, I noticed that the target shows as 'inactive' and 'dead'.  Not entirely sure what that means.
    ➜ ~ systemctl list-units --type=target --all | grep network-online
network-online.target loaded inactive dead Network is Online
Where can I go from here to make sure my Crashplan service only starts after the network is online?
    Thanks.

Well, I'm connected to the internet via Wifi by the time I get past my lightdm greeter.  Not sure if systemd wants something else.

According to the User Guide, all other options (All/System/Cube/Infoprovider/Query/Query View) which are included in the "Connections" section are referring to Business Objects Enterprise which is not my case.
Any ideas will be much appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • Network HDD Options

Hi I am hoping someone can offer me some advice.
I have purchased an AE all up and running. I have my printer wich is not wireless, attached to the AE via usb works fine. What i am looking for is an easy way to connect cheaper external HDD to the AE. The primary reason for the external HDD is to move my apeture photo library and itunes library off my MBP. The only external HDD with ethernet connections (printer is using the usb port on the AE) seem to be expensive NAS options. Will AE recognise a HDD if it is attached to a usb adapter?? or ethernet to usb/thunderbolt/firewire adapter???? Or is there a simple solution and im just missing it.
    Thanks
    Nat

I can advice you buy any cheap USB hub (you can see my hub on the picture bellow). So then you connect 2 or more devices to your AE.

  • File Manager or network explore options available?

    Hello!
of course one of the droves who purchased a Touchpad recently and trying to access network files, music and documents.
I have done a couple searches but it seems like the WebOS versions of these programs designed for the phones won't work on this device, any suggestions?
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

There are file managers available.  One that I know of is Gemini.  I am sure there are others, but Gemini is the only one that comes to mind for me.  I don't know of any network explorers.

  • Unable to open AirPort options sheet in Network System Preference

    Hi there,
There are several posts (and a Radar bug number, 4273111) reporting a certain difficulty with systems that have been upgraded to Tiger. For some reason: When viewing the AirPort network interface in the Network system preference, certain installations do not allow one to open the "Options" sheet.
    To reproduce:
    1. Open System Preferences.
    2. Click on the Network system preference.
    3. Show -> AirPort.
    4. Click the "Options" button.
Normally, this should open an options sheet. However, on three separate systems I've encountered that have been upgraded to 10.4.x from earlier versions of Mac OS X (Jaguar to Panther to Tiger), the sheet does not open at all. Console reports the following when the button is clicked:
    2006-11-07 09:55:22.206 System Preferences[379] * Assertion failure in -[PreferencesApp _commonBeginModalSessionForWindow:relativeToWindow:modalDelegate:didEndSelector :contextInfo:], AppKit.subproj/NSApplication.m:3057
2006-11-07 09:55:22.229 System Preferences[379] Modal session requires modal window
I've tried replacing the following items (then repairing permissions after each attempt) with a known-good copy from another 10.4.x system (same OS version/build in each case—as of this post, tested through 10.4.8), without effect:
    /Applications/System Preferences.app
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/
    /System/Library/PreferencePanes/Network.prefPane
    /System/Library/Frameworks/Preferences.framework
I've seen references to a similar error in Safari that was able to be fixed with a reinstall of Safari—apparently, something corrupted in WebKit.framework. I'm presuming something similar would work here (and it's been reported that an Archive and Install will fix the problem, but that's certainly overkill to correct such an issue).
I've got clients that are not happy about this and the problem has apparently been documented for well over a year now. The following Discussions threads cover it as well:
    "can't open airport options"
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1125018
    "Network system preferences stuck"
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1123291
    "Airport Preferred Networks"
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=722797
I'm happy to lend whatever troubleshooting assistance I can, so if anyone else out there can similarly recommend files I might try replacing that I've not already mentioned here, or any other information that could be helpful, I'd certainly appreciate it!
    Thanks much,
