Network Printer printing Gibberish and Disconnecting

The printers are connected to the network via a switch. It goes from router -> switch -> port on wall -> switch (unmanaged) -> printer. It is on a domain and it seems that only the printers connected to an unmanaged switch are having the issue. Firmware has been updated and it has the latest device drivers on the PC. In addition, it just prints gibberish pages randomly. For example, we had a printer set up this morning and when we came back this afternoon, it had run out of 500 pages of paper because it printed out the different type of fonts that it uses. Any ideas?

Awesome, I downloaded the new drivers for the printer (there were OS 10.4 specific ones) and it worked like a charm. I guess I gave OS X more credit than it deserved in this case, thanks!

  • SOLUTION to your HP printer going offline and/or constantly disconnecting from the network

If you are having a problem printing, scanning or faxing with any HP Printer because of it going offline and constantly disconnecting from the network, here is the fix!
I figured this all out after many unsuccessful attempts with HP Support, my Internet Service Provider and various troubleshooting tasks including reinstalling HP software over and over and over.  Well, through self teaching on the internet and 6 grueling months of research, I FINALLY figured it out.  OMG!  I am a Paramedic (not IT) and somewhat computer literate but by far no expert.  I here all of you!  Nobody seems to have the answer but I am 97% sure that I do.  Either way, please reply back and let me know that this did in fact work for you!  :-)
It doesn't matter if your printer is installed wirelessly or wired.  Don’t worry about reinstalling your software, no recycling your printers’ power or your Router/Modem.  The reason your printer is unstable on the network and continues to either go offline or disconnect from the network is NOT because the software is glitched, it’s not a firewall problem per say, it’s not a router problem, there isn’t a problem with your power cord, it’s because most networks use a “range” of IP addresses and for security purposes, it sort of “cycles” the various devices’ IP addresses to decrease the chance of an attack.  A printer is no threat but the “network” doesn’t possess human intelligence so it doesn’t know this.  Below are my step by step instructions on how to basically make your printer hold its IP address (static IP) instead of changing back and forth through a cycle therefore dropping your printer off the network or disconnecting.
Funny, if you are someone who has had items in your print cue, they won’t print, and you turn your printer off and then back on and suddenly your documents print…well, join my club.  The reason this works is because when you first turn on the printer, it starts with the same IP address before it cycles.  If you are someone who sits there for a while and suddenly your documents print without you changing anything…this is because through the IP cycle change, it hits your printers IP address and the network will allow it to print.  Not very funny, I know.  It took me forever to figure out why my printer would print sometimes but not all the time.  Since I figured this out, I can SCAN, PRINT and use all of the features of my installed HP software such as HP Solution Center, Photosmart Essentials.
On your printer, go to menu/setup/network and press OK.  Inside the network menu, print a "network configuration page" so you can see the IP address and other settings for your printer.
Now, go back to main menu on your printers’ screen.  Or you can go to your web browser and type in the IP address using the decimals too and this will take you to your printers’ web page.  Choose: setup\network and press OK.  Look for IP settings and press OK. Choose "manual" instead of "automatic". Enter the IP address there manually as well as the default gateway which you can see on the network configuration page that you printed earlier.  Note: If you manually set the printer's IP, make sure that it is outside of your router's DHCP range. Otherwise you may run into an issue with duplicate IP's on your network. (If you don’t know how to do this, write back and I will explain).  Don’t forget to click “save changes”.  Now, restart your computer and print anything you want.  :-)
A trick I often use with printers in DHCP networks:
In Printers and Faxes right click on the printer and select “properties”.  Click add a new port.  Choose standard TCP/IP port configured to the printer host name. Read the hostname from the printer's network configuration sheet.
Using my method means that you always connect to the printer even if its IP changes (which may happen with dynamic configuration). This does not jeopardize your network security.  It just tells your printer to stay put and stop traveling the IP address highway.  :-)

The DHCP range is the range of IP addresses the router hands out automatically as devices join the network.  The DHCP range is determined by the router and each brand has a range set at the factory (that can be changed by you).
Your D-link's DHCP default range is 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199.  So, outside the DHCP range is .2 to .99 and .200 to .254.
Attached is a handy cheat sheet.
You can change this range by entering the router's settings page - type the router's IP address into a browser, enter the login info and navigate to the DHCP settings area (varies based on router, hunt around).

  • Constant printer connect and disconnect

My computer is initially okay unitl I turn on the printer (Photosmart C7280).  In recent times, however (this was not always the case), when turning on the printer the computer starts revving up and down at short intervals, and in checking the installed printers the printer constantly loses and regains its connection with the computer for short periods.
Oddly, even after turning the printer power back off this revving up and down and connecting/disconnecting between the printer and computer continues for perhaps ten to fifteen minutes or so before it settles back down to normal.  I cannot find anything specific about this in direct HP troubleshooting documents.
I am running XP Home Edition and the unit is connected through a wired ethernet home network.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you very much in advance.  I appreciate it.

Without your printer model numbers, readers can only give you vague general directions.
    System Preferences > Print&Fax > ...
... shows a list of all set-up printers.
If you are having serious problems, it makes sense to "Reset the Printing System" (which also removes all printer set-ups) and add back each printer. It only takes a few minutes.

You need to turn on Printer Sharing on both the PC and OS X. I can't help you on Vista but in OS X it's System Preferences - Sharing - check the Printer Sharing box.

I have down loaded printer, scanner drivers and 2 applications Navigator and Network from Canon's website. I cannot seem to get these to run althought the printer works when connected to the Mac with a LAN cable Canon's documentation is useless because it relies on downloading a disc which you cannot do without a CD drive that MacBook Air does not have. Any suggestions appreciated.

Hi John. Thanks for that input. At Step 6, after clicking "Next" I get a window telling me my OS version is unsupported and the installation may not complete. I am prompted to go to Canon's web site to "Check Latest Info".
I've had this window on previous attempts and from Canon's web site I downloaded two drivers as follows
    - ICA Driver V4.0.0
    - Canon IJ Network Tool V4.5.0
I'm not sure if these are the correct / complete drivers I need for this install or not.
I continue to follow all the steps. At step 9 I click "Wireless Set Up using USB" amd get a License Agreement (a little different than instructions)
I click "Agree" and it goes to a Setup window with two progress bars showing the installation. I've not been prompted to connect the USB?
After the Setup window is done, I am then prompted to connect the printer via USB. I connect the printer and click on "Redetect". It is not detected.
I then try following the Canon on screen instructions for connecting to the wireless LAN amd enter the password. It searches and indicates "Connecting" on the window, but it never connects and the blue light just blinks
So, at this point I am stuck??
    Thanks

  • Airport , Belkin gaming adapter and a network laser printer

I have an airport network extreme base station and express using WDS to extend range around home. That works fine.
I have just got a Belkin gaming adapter, a wireless box with ethernet port to plug in non-wireless devices.
My problem is this; I can "see" my Oki laser printer plugged into Belkin box as a Bonjour printer but when I print to it the jobs don't print as it comes up off line.
I have used this printer fine with Macs on another wired network, so I am perplexed. Also I can plug in USB direct and print fine.
    Any thoughts anyone.
    Thanks

My AX is the newer one. I have had it setup to "Participate in a WDS network" for a long time, along with "allow wireless clients" (in the WDS tab). Under the Internet section, the Internet Connection setting for Connection Sharing has been "Off (Bridge Mode)". The AX has 7.5.2. If I change it to "join....." will this be tied to the printer?
The "Participate in a WDS network" option would configure the AX to extend another AirPort or Time Capsule in a static WDS. This type of network can only operate in the 802.11g radio mode and has severe bandwidth limitations.
Changng the AX to "Join a wireless network" is the default for sharing a printer and/or streaming iTunes. However, with the 802.11n version, this option is used along with the Enable Ethernet clients to configure the AX as a wireless Ethernet bridge. In this configuration, the AX will join the Extreme's wireless network and have its Ethernet port enabled for the printer.

  • Need help connecting to network printer using xfce and cups

    Hello
please can someone assist me with setting up a printer.
I am running arch and xfce desktop.
I have an Epson Stylus Photo R800 USB printer connected to a wireless Belkin all-in-one Print Server.
I do not know how to connect to this printer.
I am not conversant in CUPS or network printing and would very much like to use the printer.
My arch box is connected through cable to a wireless router.
The print server is connected to the wireless router and the router confirms the print server is attached to the network.
The print server IP address is 192.168.0.100.
The printer server has a web interface which I used to set wireless and TCP settings. I should say that I went into this interface and configured the print server which is totally usable and fine from a Vista laptop using wireless - vista laptop "sees" the print server and prints over wireless, therefore I know the server and printer are working together and all the print server settings are fine. I dont know how Vista connects, it just does!
I tried installing gutenprint and foomatic, went into the CUPS server page (localhost:631) and found my printer but I'm not sure if my connection string (socket://192.168.0.100:9100) is correct. I've tried several values and several Epson drivers from the CUPS web interface, all to no avail. I just get this message:
    bash-3.2# lpstat -t
    scheduler is running
    system default destination: Epson
    device for Epson: socket://192.168.0.100:9100

printer Epson now printing Epson-0. enabled since Sat 26 Jul 2008 22:53:35 BST
    /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster failed
I have no desire to be a CUPS expert nor a networking expert - I was rather hoping someone could guide me through the process, I have tried reading web links (google) but do not understand various pages and instructions.

    EDIT:
    SOLVED!
the problem was that gutenprint needed to be installed.
I looked at the rastertops file in /usr/lib/cups/filter and it was very small, handfull of lines, but refered to gutenprint (whatever that is).
"pacman -Q gutenprint" revealed it was not installed.
    All is fine now.
    GREAT!

  • Why does my printer randomly cycle and print a network configuration page?

My HP Photosmart C4795 randomly cycles like it is cleaning the printer heads. Sometimes it is hours between this cycling. Sometimes it will print a network configuration page without being requested.
There are 3 computers connected wirelessly. Both run Windows 7. The wireless signal has a very good signal - the router is ~12 ft from the printer.

It could be a power issue.  If the power fluctated the printer would restart which might cause it to do a dirty power print clean.
If you have a surge supressor I would try that.
Not sure why the network config page would print with a power surge, but another possibility is a friendly neighbor playing with you by sending printer clean reauests and network config print jobs. :-)

  • SMB and Network Scanner/Printer

    MacBook Pro -> 10.5.6
I just received back my MacBook Pro from Apple repair last week. I reinstalled from Time Machine and all is fine . . . except . . . file sharing to Windows.
We have a network scanner/printer on the network. I can print with no problems to the printer. I cannot get a scan sent to my computer from the printer/scanner. And yes this worked fine before.
    1. I have SMB enabled and entered in my password.
    2. I have repaired permissions
    3. Windows computers cannot see my computer. (I see the name however, I cannot access the folders.
    4. The scanner/printer which has worked fine till my repair at apple (new HD) is not working anymore. Says computer is not found.

Unless your problem is identical to one in an existing post, it's rarely appropriate to tack a post onto an existing thread. Also, as Apple doesn't officially monitor this discussion group, this isn't the best place to request anything from Apple. Unless this is what you meant by "submitted a feature request", you might have better luck posting here:

I have an all-in-one HP 3180 which i purchased from Apple with a new Mac. I recently connected it to my new 2TB time machine but now I cannot scan.
Please don't confuse "Time Machine" (backup software that's included with Mac OS X) with "Time Capsule" (an Apple Wi-Fi router with an integrated disk drive).
Is it too much to ask that HP & apple work together to create a solution to provide for scanning support over TC.
I don't know. Have you contacted HP technical support? Does either Apple or HP represent that they support what you're trying to do?
If it's possible to share the scanner when it's connected to a mac why not when it's connected to a TC.
Perhaps because a Mac has specific drivers for such a scanner, while a Time Capsule doesn't.

  • Postscript errors on networked Gestetner printer

I am the only Mac in a PC network, and am attempting to print to a Gestetner DSC460 printer.
I am able to connect to this printer through Appletalk. However, I get postscript errors when printing.
The most informative error, has beenthis from Adobe Acrobat:
+"This application does not support printing to a Postscript Language Level 1 printer.+
+As a work around, try selecting 'Print As Image' from the Advanced Print dialog."+
Based on other posts I have read, I have found and installed the "pxlmono" set of PPDs from linux-foundation.org to no avail.
I still get the informative error from Acrobat, and the non-informative gibberish from other applications.

The pxlmono PPD along with Foomatic-RIP and Ghostscript should work fine with this printer. Did you install all the items on the Mac OS X pxlmono page? http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/pxlmono
The PPD contained in that package is supplied by Ricoh. Your printer is one of the Ricoh family of printers. All of their network printers will support some type of PCL driver. The network protocols and printer command languages supported by the printer are found in the specifications. http://www.nrggroup.co.uk/Documents/brochures/gestetner/gestetnerDSc460cb.pdf
If you install all three packages from Mac OS X pxlmono page cited above and still get the same error message, perhaps the network the printer is on does not fully support passing AppleTalk packets. You may have to switch to some other connection protocol such as IP -> LPD.
This printer should work fine with Mac OS X. If we cannot determine the exact cause in this forum, you could try the Ricoh forum at OpenPrinting http://forums.linux-foundation.org/list.php?30 You can get help there from Ricoh representatives.
EDIT: I should have mentioned that the error message from Adobe Acrobat doesn't even make sense. The printer is not a PostScript printer. Acrobat shouldn't be complaining that it can't print to a PostScript Level 1 printer. I believe it is a spurious error message.
