Network printig, Mac to PC

Im at home and i have a canon ip3500 series printer hooked up to my mom's vista laptop... im working on my macbook pro from my room and im wondering if its possible to set the printer hooked up to the pc to rpint when ordered from the mac(even though its not connected to it)... i know its possible cus at my school my teachers desktop is hooked up to the printer and i can print from my laptop... by the way the canon i have is not wireless.... but both computers are conected to the same home wireless.

With the Mac and the Vista PC on the same network, you should be able to add the printer using the Windows connection Add Printer browser (when you click + in Print & Fax and then select the Windows icon). You will see the workgroup and name used by the Vista PC in the list and when selecting the Vista name you will get prompted to authenticate. You will need to enter the account details set in Vista, most likely your mothers user name and password.
After entering the correct details the shared printer name will appear in the last column. Select this and then in the print using menu click 'Select Printer Software'. This will make the Printer Software window appear and in the search window type ip3. This will shortlist all the printers starting with this name, mostly Canon devices. What you want to see and then select is the 'Canon PIXMA iP3100 - Gutenprint v5.2.x'.
With this Gutenprint model selected try printing a document. You may have to enter the Vista user name and password again to get the print job through. If the text print okays try printing a document with text and graphics to ensure it works also.

  • Can I Network My Mac With Windows XP Pro With This Setup?

Hey Folks. I have an iBook G4, OSX 10.4.7 and I want to network and or remote access with a Windows XP Pro laptop. In the household, we have DSL with SBC Global. We have a Linksys router. I have an Airport Extreme wifi card, the PC is hooked directly via cable into the Linksys. The router is connected to the DSL modem. Since I get online wirelessly and the PC gets on via the cable and not wireless, can we still do web access hookup, file sharing, remote access? How do we configure both machines to do this? Will we be able to do application/desktop sharing live in real time? Thanks for your insight and help steve

Hi Rick. I want to experiment with networking the Mac to the PC on the internet and in the house. We both have MS Office, so I would assume we can do application sharing, work on the same documents in real time live, the same way that 2 computers play games and such. In other words, I don't want to have to hook an Ethernet cable to the Mac and PC to network together. Want to do it via the net. I did download the Remote Access Windows app from Mactopia today. Ready for the sophisticated methods now, (I think, hah)
Although it has gotten much easier to network Macs to PC's since Panther and Tiger, getting the configuration and hookups to work together perfectly is another challenge. It's tricky and frustrating when you seem to have put it all together, and then BANG!, it doesn't work. sigh I have tried the Ethernet connection method and that took forever to get that working, but it finally did ok. Also in the Sharing window under System Prefs, there are a lot of options to tweak as well.
I'll check out the link you recommended. Keep ya posted. Thanks steve

  • Setting up a small business network using mac and windows pcs

Setting up a small business network using mac and windows??

Ok that sounds great. What is your actual question as it relates to AirPort networking? Is it: Can I set up a wired/wireless network with an AirPort base station that support multiple Mac & PC clients? If so the answer is yes.
If, instead, it is how to I configure an AirPort network to support a small business you will have to provide more details on both your networking & computing equipment in order for any of us to help you.

  • Connecting pc to network on mac

i have a pc laptop that i had connected to network through mac desktop and for whatever reason it's not working.
i uninstalled printer from pc and now i can't figure out how to get it hooked up again. guess i should have written it down. ...
    here are my steps:
1.HP printer is working on mac and the sharing button is toggled on.
    2. I can see the network computer (mac) from my PC laptop
    3. I go to add printer on pc / add a network printer tab and the search comes up with nothing. i'm pretty sure i was seeing all my printers before
    4. i then  toggle the Select a shared printer by name option and type in \\owensmac\laserjet and I get the big red X connect to printer.
i'm guessing the address is wrong. I renamed the printer laserjet on the mac.
    any help would be welcome.
    thanks
    Owen

What make and model of router? For what you describe, you need a combo Ethernet / Wireless Access Point (WAP) router. In that case, the short answer is, use the Mac, which is connected to the router by Ethernet cable, to configure the router using whatever instructions are provided with the router, typically on an included CD. For PCs, there's usually a setup program; for Macs, you'll need to find the help ot setup instructions file, typically a PDF.
Essentially, you want to set the WiFi side of the router to name a network, serve IP numbers by DHCP, turn on WPA and select a password. You can then use the Network Setup Assistant on the PC to find that WiFi network and set it as the default connection.
For real help, head over to iFelix Tech Notes, which has nicely illustrated step-by-step instructions on a host of topics that will be of interest in settings up a Mac-PC home network.

  • Network between mac os 10.6.1 and windows 7

    HI guys
I asking about networking between mac os 10.6.1 and windows 7
    on windows 7, I opened file,printer sharing on (workgroup)homegroup.
on mac os 10.6.1, finder->go->computer. It show Macintosh HD & Network, click on Network, there is nothing there.
The only I can do is.... finder->go->connect to server (input smb://192.168.xxx.xxx and connect)
After that, on finder->go->computer->network is showing up 192.168.xxx.xxx
MY QUESTION IS HOW I CAN SEE WINDOWS (workgroup)HOMEGROUP ON MAC OS 10.6.1 BEFORE CONNECTED TO 192.168.XXX.XXX BY HAND?
    Thank you!

I think you are asking, in effect, why you can't see your smb shares in "Shared" in the sidebar of a finder window? Often Sno does not make that connection automatically, and one must connect via smb://IpAddress (or computer network name). Once you do so, if you keep the connection active, then the Win7 machine is likely to be found under Shared eventually. The only way I have found to keep shares showning under Shared for an extended period is to keep all pertinent machines from sleeping over the period of expected access.

  • Can I control a network of Macs across the internet with ARD?

    Hi,
Can I control a network of Macs across the internet with ARD?
I seem to only be able to control one mac at a time. Am I missing something?
    Thanks
    Matt

To be able to connect to a workstation from outside it's network, the ports that ARD uses must be open on both ends of the connection. ARD uses ports 3283 and 5900 so those must be open.
If your workstations get their addresses from an NAT device rather than being "real", the ports also need to be forwarded in the router to the workstation's internal IP address. ARD uses port 3283 for the reporting and updating function, so if your Macs are getting their IP addresses through NAT, since you can only forward a port to a single workstation, you can only get reports, push package/files to etc. for a single workstation.
ARD uses the VNC protocol for observation and control, though, and there are a range of IP addresses for that protocol, starting with 5900. ARD uses 5900 by default, so that port would be forwarded to the first workstation. You would, I believe, need to install VNC servers on the systems (since the ARD client cannot listen on any port other than 5900 while VNC servers can be set for other ports such as 5901, 5902, etc. You would then forward 5901 to the second workstation (and on to 5902, 5903, etc.). You can then use the following information:
Remote Desktop: How to specify a port number for a VNC client
    to connect.
The only other options are: 1) to run the ARD administrator on a workstation on the network, and then take control of that system from outside, either via VNC or another copy of ARD, or 2) set up a virtual private network (VPN) so that when you connect from outside, your admin system is officially part of the local network.
    Hope this helps.

Perhaps you must just enable the Allow Encoding using Legacy CoDecs option in the Quicktime control panel on the network machine or else some of that may not show up. Of course make sure QT is installed correctly in teh first place, as Todd and Rick said. On a server, you may need to set special group policies for that to work, also.

  • Software update - networking error (Mac OS 10.4.11)

    Hi everyone,
I've been having problems running software update on my 867 MHz Powerbook G4. Every time I try to run software update, I get the same message: "A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again."
    I'm using Mac OS X 10.4.11.
My network is running fine, and I've run Network Diagnostics several times fully through to confirm this.
I've tried repairing the disk permissions through disk utility a few times, and nothing's changed.
I tried copying three files from my Library / Preferences folder, along with my Caches folder (after reading that this could fix the problem), but still, software update doesn't work.
I tried running the 10.4.11 combo update for PPC, rebooted in safe mode, and repaired my disk permissions again, but still, no luck.
There's another problem that might be related: Safari can't load pages. Firefox 2.0.0.18 works fine, but Safari doesn't do anything. Also, closing the Safari window (Ctrl + W) doesn't work, quitting the program is the only way to make it go away.
Thanks in advance for the help, it's much appreciated!

Hi James, and a warm welcome to the forums!
To expand a bit on Sig's great advice...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
Also, how much free space do you have on your HDD?

  • I am unable to share files satisfactorily over my home network between Mac and Windows

    Please advise.
I have an iMac with a LaCie Thunderbolt external hard drive and a Windows 7 laptop connected via ethernet network to a Belkin router with a WD MyBook Live Duo attached to it via USB.   The iMac also has a virtual PC in it using VMWare.
I have never been able to get file sharing to work satisfactorily across the network.
From the iMac, which is now running Yosemite, I can access the laptop and the external hard drive fine, but connections to the WD network drive are very slow and unreliable.
From the laptop, I can access the iMac and the WD network drive OK but while the LaCie share formatted for windows is visible, I am unable to open the individual files.
I was advised that I need a server.  I have therefore bought and installed OS X Server on my Mac but I don't understand it and have absolutely no idea what to do to make it work.  I open the LaCie share for example and cannot change anything - I get the message " 'Ignore ownership on this volume' is turned on for the volume containing the Share Point.  All permissions will be ignored.  This can be turned off in the 'Get info' window in the Finder."  Except it can't, because there is no such option in that window.
I can find no help  anywhere for this.  Please tell me how I set my network up so that files can be shared freely across it.

  • Sharing an address book over a local network - is .Mac required?

We have a smal Mac ethernet network of 4 or five macs all running OSX 10.3 or above and all with Administrator access. Each mac is used by one member of staff only. One member of staff maintains our client/supplier contacts database as an Excel worksheet on one of the macs, for mail merging with Word, marketing mail shots and other correspondence etc.
Other staff on the network need access to those up-to-date contacts on a daily basis and it is a pain accessing the Excel file all the time accross the network. I have my own pesonal .Mac membership account and I have successfully experimented with exporting the Excel file as a formatted text file (.txt) and importing the relevant fields from the file into Address Book. I intend empowering the 'contacts maintainer' to import the Excel contacts into her macs address book at periodic intervals....
Based on this scenario, my questions are as follows:
    a) Can other staff access/share her address book contacts over the network in their local copy of Address Book without a .Mac account?
    b) If she is set up with a .Mac account on her Mac...
    i) I can subscribe to her address book through my copy of Address Book as I have a .Mac account already - how will this display in my Address Book (Will it automatically creat a new Group?)
ii) Do other staff have to have individual .Mac accounts in order to subscribe to her Address Book contacts (and do they need the full .Mac Membership) – Could they not simply enter her .Mac member details in their macs System Prefs>.Mac>Account and then synchronise Contacts (and possibly iCal Calendars) as this is all they would require it for?
    c) Is there a simpler way to achieve all this at minimal cost?
    d) Is Directory Access>Contacts involved in a possible alternative solution or am I 'barking up the wrong tree'?
Would appreciate some help with this ASAP!
    DMC

    Hi Dozza,
The good news is YES, sharing an Address Book group(s) is easily done without .Mac
Since you are on an ethernet network, all you need to do is:
    1. Enable Sharing thru System Preferences from your "main" computer you wish to transfer data from/with.
    2. Drag your AB group(s) or individual cards to the desktop of your main computer - the one you have all the info in... (the cards will convert to vCards automatically.
    3. Place those groups or cards in your Drop Box folder which is: Hard Drive>Users>your "Home" folder>Public>Drop Box
    4. All networked computers will be able to access your Drop Box folder even if you do not want other info shared.
Of course .Mac is pretty darn handy too!
    Good Luck

  • Setup wireless network for mac and pc with Airport Express?

    Mac Mini/OSX/10.8.2/Airport Express
    Question,
I have my AIrPort Express setup for my Mac Mini and I have dell computer that I want to share the wireless network. Is it possible to setup a wireless network with my mini and the pc using only the AirPort Express? Is the Airport Express a wireless router?
    Thanks,

If your Mac Mini is connecting to the Express using wireless, then this confirms that the device is working correctly.
The Express is a wireless router that can support up to 10 wireless connections, so your Dell computer should be able to connect assuming that its wireless card is working correctly, and the Dell indentifies the network and enters the correct wireless network password.
If you are having difficulty with the Dell PC connecting, this Windows troubleshooting document might help:

  • Networking a Mac Pro to a PB G4

    Hi everyone,
I recently bought a Mac Pro as an upgrade to my PowerBook G4. I still like to keep the PB around for when I'm on the road. Originally, I had the two networked with a firewire 800 cable so I could pass files to and from, and everything worked perfect. I decided to do a complete format and reinstall of my OS and apps on the PB to clean out some old software and preferances and since doing so I can no longer connect to the PB. I get a message saying "An AFP system error has occurred." The really strange thing is that I can connect as a guest, just not as a registered user. I can also connect the MP to the PB, just not the other way around (which I used to be able to do). Both coputers are running OS 10.4.10. The PowerBook was reinstalled with 10.4 and then upgraded to 10.4.10 in one shot. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate any help at all. Thanks a lot.
    ~ Philip

Actually you don't so I'm just being a big idiot. Sorry.
Now, back to your issue, have your tried changing your connection options? You do so via the "gear" symbol drop-down in the Connect to Server window that pops up when you try to connect.
EDIT : May be a very silly question but I have to ask… you are using the right username and password combination aren't you?
