Network printing via an Intel Netport Express print server

We have a 'complicated' network at home comprising two Macs (G4 800MHZs) and 6 PCs.Printing is either wirelessly to an HP D125xi which also serves as the network scanner, and wired via the Intel Netport Express Pro 100 to an HP690c and Epson 740C. However, I cannot get the Epson or HP 690 to print via the print server. Currently the Epson is served directly via a very long tortuous USB cable, and I can't be bothered with the HP690. I know all the IP addresses of the network, including the print server, but although I can see the print server on the network, when trying to access the printer ports on it, I have nothing to latch on to. Will this combination simply not work? I can access the print servier via my browser and set it up, but I can't get Printer Set-up Utility to get through to the printers, which are on LPT1 and LPT 2. The PCs have no problems with this arrangement and can print and scan across the network easily. PS I'm a user, not a tecchie, so please, any explanations in layman's terms. Thanks.

Network printing/Windows printing only works with a driver that was meant for network printing. To use the OS X built-in CUPS network choices, you need a CUPS driver. For postscript printers, it's not an issue, because postscript is the native output of OS X, and can easily be routed to the various CUPS choices in Printer Setup.
Non-postscript printers are Very Different. Except for Brother, no manufacturer has provided CUPS drivers. Instead, what you get are Carbonized, OS9 legacy drivers, that have the comm protocol written into the driver (mostly USB). They can only print via local connection.
Here are the sources of CUPS drivers I know of:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=1537
http://www.printfab.net
http://www.easysw.com/printpro/
Then, after you have the driver, to setup for the print server you need to carefully read the manual to decide which protocol(s) are supported and then enter the right info into Printer Setup. The IPP and LPD protocols both require a device-specific queue name (also called port name), which should be in the manual. HP Jetdirect protocol doesn't use queue name. Common queue names are L1, lp, P1 etc. (If you know for sure it's LPT1 and LPT2, that good!) If the manual is no help, you can find the info in Windows printer properties > Ports > select port > Configure port.
Good luck.

  • Printing via Network Printer Server not working

I have three Macs on a local Network, PowerBook Pro, Mac Pro and Mac Mini.  Printing facilites are provided by an Epson printer connected to a Networked Print Server, both the PowerBook Pro and the Mac Pro print without any issues, However when i try to print from the MacMini i always get a communications error. I have another location where i have a similar set up and i get the same error at that location.
The Print Servers and Mac's are connected to the network via Wireless, if i try to use Ethernet i get the same issues.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

The Mini runs on Lion (10.7) and Lion want to have all network participants in the same local domain since Airdrop.
Check that the printserver uses local as domain in the network settings instead of (as often preset) workgroup

  • CP1217 vs. Network Print Server

    Hi,
I'm trying (and failing) to get my CP1217 (colour lasjet) working with my network print server (Netgear WGPS606).
The CP1217 works fine connected directly (USB) to the computer, and the WGPS606 works fine (otherwise I wouldn't be typing this - and it worked fine with my previous (HP) printer).
When the CP1217 is hooked up to the WGPS606 (and after the printer/software setup is done so that the printer is setup on the IP printer port), the HP print monitor (prnstatusmx.exe) reports that it isn't connected, and nothing prints.  The WGPS606 status/diagnostics however report that it is connected (although it is clearly true that the printer is no longer locally connected.)
I  have three questions - all help appreciated:
Has anyone got the CP1217 (or a printer from the same series) working with a WGPS606?  (If so, how?)
Is the CP1217 compatible with a network print server (apart from the HP wireless kit thing which wouldn't do what I need)?
Does the print monitor (prnstatusmx.exe) only "see" locally connected printers, regardless of what port settings are set for the printer?
    Thanks in advance...

I've been using a CP1217 with a Sitecom LN308 print server (which is cabled to my switch) since late March and it's fine, so the answer to your question whether it works with anything other than the HP print server is a resounding 'Yes'. Initially I just installed drivers as I was in the middle of an Open University assignment and wanted to print a.s.a.p (my poor old DJ840C was struggling). Today I decided to install the Toolbox so I can monitor the toner levels etc, as I'm about to start another block in my OU course and have lots of course text to print.  That's where the problem started as the Toolbox is seeing the printer via the Sitecom but there's a big cross beside it and I can't access the status monitors etc. I've posted this as I'm hoping someone can tellme if/how this can be made to work.
You don't say if your print server is wired or wireless - if the latter, might this be an issue?
You said you've installed it using IP (I take it you've used a local TCP/IP port with the print server IP no?) - have you tried installing it as a local crown port using \\<print server name>\Printer name? Might be worth a go.
    Good luck.

  • Riddle:  Printing from iMAC to printer on networked print server

    Here is a Doozy:
I am having trouble printing from my new Intel iMac over a wireless network, through an attached print server.
Here is the layout & issue:
    Configuration:
I have a Windows XP PC & iMac in my office.
I have a wireless network connecting the 2.
On this network & have attached the SimpleShare 250GB network HDD, with print server
I have a Canon Pixma 800 attached via USB to the SimpleShare print server.
    Issue:
The iMAC cannot print out of the printer.
The iMAC searches, finds & installs the printer (name: MP800, puts it in WORKGROUP, with queue of MP800)
It sends the job & says the job is done (looking good!).
I hear the HDD fire up (a couple clicks). But nothing prints out & the printer does not recognize a job was sent to it. (ARGHH!)
    I have:
upgraded to the latest firmware on SimpleShare.
The windows PC prints fine to the printer, through this same configuration.
The iMAC prints fine to the printer when connected directly.
The iMAC reads/writes fine to the HDD itself through the network.
The internet connection works fine through this configuration.
The ONLY issue is getting a print job from the iMAC to the printer.
ANY & ALL help is appreciated, its driving me crazy...

I suspect it may be a driver issue.
It may work with the PrintFab Drivers (but these cost).

  • Help needed to setup to Network Print Server

    Hi,
I am trying to configure the following to print from my Mac:
    D-Link DP-301U USB print server
    HP Color LaserJet 3500
MacBook Core Duo OS X 10.4.8
Very little information is available on both D-Link and HP website.
The D-Link installation guide says to install via AppleTalk.
AppleTalk has been activated on my AirPort as well as on the Web configuration of Print Server. However I cannot see any printer on adding a printer.
In the Add Printer Browser, I can see my print server on Bonjour. When selected, I am supposed to choose my HP printer, but it is no on the HP printer list.
Only Generic PostScript can be selected, however when printing, it prints our garbage.

A long time ago, I worked on a print spooler and was lent a JetDirect
box from HP to test with. A JetDirect card is in your LaserJet, I believe.
(One of the protocols it supported was localtalk, BTW). I think the
d-link isn't forwarding your localtalk packets. Anyway, one of the
things I remember is that the JetDirect spoke PCL, so that's another
consideration a driver has to deal with. The garbage you're seeing
is raw postscript. It needs to be rasterized and translated to PCL.
Please bear with me, my experience is very old, and there are gaps
in my knowledge. But I think this is do-able. I think the first step is
to add the printer directly by clicking here,
The location of the printer should be the address of the print server
(or canonical name if you're ever going to change addresses). The
device should be appsocket/jetdirect. The device uri should be
socket://nameoripaddressofdevice. The make should be HP and
the model/driver should be one of the Laserjet series, gimp-print.
I don't know which one, my experience ended around Laserjet 5, and
so do the drivers! But fundamentally they have to do the same thing.
They use the gimp-print package to rasterize the postscript and
encapsulate it into PCL. So I would bet the LaserJet 6 driver will work.
I'm sure everything posted here is correct, and that my experience
is too old and I don't know enough to know why this won't work,
but it's not a lot of effort, and if I were you I'd give it a try.

  • Intel netport express

My company recently installed a new server that runs enterprise ver 6.5.
On the old server (netware v5.0) we ran netware enterprise print services
that would support netport express. Can NPDS run on the enterprise version
of netware 6.5. If I can't then is there some add- on from Novell that I
can load that will let me configure the printers?

Note that this is a Linux forum and so maybe your question is a bit off
    topic here.
Anyway, given the answer is simple, I will provide it here.
NetWare 6.5 includes iPrint which is just a superset of NDPS. So if you
make sure your Nw 6.5 server has iPrint installed, you can configure your
Netport as an NDPS pritner just like you did with NW 5.0.

  • Network print server compatibility

I'm contemplating the purchase of a network storage device (LaCie d2) which has a built in print server for a USB attached printer. I'd like to find out if this function will be compatible with my Samsung ML-1640 laser printer. The available specs indicate that the print server requires a postscript capable printer but I can't find any convincing evidence about whether the ML-1640 is compatible or not. Has anybody tried this?

Thanks...That was my initial assumption when I looked at the Samasung support site. HOWEVER, there is a small ray of hope. The LaCie tech spec says that the device is compatible with printers on the Openprinting compatibility list. There is a user contributed entry in this list claiming that the ML-1640 works with Linux.
    http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Samsung/Samsung-ML-1640
Hence my search for anybody who's tried it.

  • How To Setup a Network Printer

I have a network printer server which connected a Canon PIXMA iP2200 linkjet. The printer works well under windows with http protocol. When I try to setup this printer under Arch, I installed CUPS, ghostscript and gsfonts via pacman and I installed iP2200 filter from aur. • Can't connect to a networked printer - Airlink101 USB Print Server

I am new to Mac. I am trying to connect my iMac to a Brother HL-5040 laser printer through an Airlink101 USB print server over my wireless network. The iMac connected to the 802.11g network immediately without any issues which is more than I can say for the other XP machines I own. I have several other Windows PC's networked and they all print just fine. Using the print setup utility, I can find the networked print server and add it to the printer list; however, I can not print. The status monitor indicates that it can't connect. The install directions on the Airlink101 website for the Mac does not seem to match the options that are part of the "add a printer" utilility. Any help would be appreciated.

When we try to add another one of the printers it finds the printer with the IP, it auto-detected the driver, then when I click next, I get an error stating there was an "error connecting to the printer would you continue anyway?"
We try to print but the queue just continuously pauses and nothing gets sent to the printer.
This could be a result of the protocol you selected. IPP is the default listed. If you remove this printer and add again, but this time change the protocol drop menu to HP Jetdirect-Socket, see if this works better for the user.

  • Window 7 32 bit excel or word hangs when print using network printer

When trying to print from Word or Excel 2010 32bit, once I click print, there is a drop down menu to select
a printer. When I select the network printer (a HP Color Laserjet 5550), underneath the printer drop down it says "connecting to printer". Word or excel will hang and then show up as "not responding".
My pc is running on Windows 7 pro 32 bit, Word and Excel of Office 2010

    Hi,
I noticed that you replied the similar thread, have you tied to the customer's resolution(Update/Reinstall the 32 bit driver on the network Print Server and then re-install the network printer, and then ran malwarebytes and
    removed malware.)?
Then, we may try to plug the USB cable from your printer into an available USB port on your PC to test if possible.
If the issue still exists, I recommend we go to Event Viewer and collect the Event log. It'll help us to troubleshoot the issue, you could upload here.

  • Can't network print lexmark C510

Help, can't print to my lexmark c510 on a network print server since upgrading my Imac to leopard. Printer is recognised at IP address and installed fine, but nothing prints when I try to do a print job. I have tried the drivers on the Leopard disc, priniting was fine under Tiger on the Imac, printing still works from powerbook G4 running Tiger.
Other then that, Leopard was a hassle free and great upgrade.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I figured out what my problem was. I think I've been sending print jobs to one printer and looking for output at another. That's why the Powerbook appeared to be sending OK. It was.
We have different scenarios. I'm using wirless and I have OS 10.5. You're on an ethernet connection with the older 10.3. I use what appears to be called "Bonjour" printing while you're using "Rendezvous." People report they're nearly the same. I dunno. I have in my system preferences a "print and fax" pane. There's a list of printers, I hit the + sign to add a printer then put in the IP address that my kind co-workers have put on the printer. The Powerbook automatically looks for the printer, gets its model from the printer and picks the corresponding driver, although if I disagree, I can change drivers. Once I get the right printer in there with the right driver, there's an icon that actually looks like the printer, which I have to admit is kind of handy.
What I can't explain is at some point after I upgrade from 10.3 to 10.5, I did something that automatically detected printers. It detected the HP 4700 color and the 2840 all-in-one but missed the 2200 BW. (Could it have been idel and undetectable?) I was all cornfused and kept looking for BW output at the 2200 but I think it was probably spewing out of the 2840. Good thing it was actually work-related!
I did have the 2200 and 4700 working fine under 10.3.9 myself, so I betcha you can get your 2840 working. Memory is always limited of such details, but I think I had to put the IP address into some printer list to get it to work back then.

  • [CLOSED]Network printing - how?

    Hi,
Got me a Dlink network print server. How do I set up my system/PC to use that? I understand that simply installing a printer locally will not do...
In one simple question: where is the manual?
    By the way:
The procedure to contact the print server given by Dlink themselves, using the "dlink-XXXXXX" approach does not work with Firefox - had to use annother browser to give it a new IP address in the network to "see" it from the Firefox...
EDIT - possibly a fireWALL not fireFOX problem.
    Tnx

Closed this for now - I think that network printing is well documented for Linux, I'd better do a search and then, after I depleted all avenues, come back with this question...
    Sorry for the trouble...

  • WIndows 7 64-bit system printing to a Windows 2000 server configured as a print server

Is there any way to configure a new Windows 7 64-bit computer to use a Windows 2000 server configured as a print server ?
The printer that I would like to connect to is an HP 4240n LaserJet. I appears that there is only a 64-bit Universal Print Driver available. The server currently uses HP 32-bit PCL5e or PCL6 drivers for all other connected computers. Connection is through a Hewlett-Packard Network Port, using DLC/LLC transport for the embedded 4240n print server.
Installing  the HP 64-bit UPD to the WIndows 7 64-bit system, and then attempting to redirect the local port to the Win2k network print server has not worked.
    Thanks for any advice.

    Hi:
    See if this works...
    Run msconfig.
In the System Configuration screen, Boot tab, Advanced Options, if there is a check mark in the box next to Maximum memory. Remove that checkmark and save your changes.
Reboot and hopefully Windows recognises all the Ram ( minus the reserved ) after restarting.
Please give that a try, and post back and let us know if that frees up some system memory for you.

  • Use my ibook g3 as a "print server"

Im interested in knowing if I can use my ibook g3 to be my networks print server.
As in hooking up ibook g3 to my network, then hooking up my printer to the ibook, and then print through it from my macbook. Does this make any sense? I hope it does. If this is possible please provide me with details on how to do this. Thanks in advance.

You should be able to - I'm doing a similar thing but using my iMac as the 'print server' so that I can print from my iBook over the wireless network.
Go to Sharing in System Preferences and tick the box for Printer Sharing. It should now be set up automatically, but you can check the printer is being shared in the Printer system preference.
(The iBook will need to be on all the time if you want to always be able to print - it can't be sleeping).
The printer should show up under 'Shared Printers' in the options for printing when you want to print on your MacBook (at least it does in 10.4, I've not upgraded to 10.5 yet so I don't know if it's different).

Ok here's the deal, in my home I have 3 Macs (Tiger), and 2 XP boxes, and we have 1 printer (HP Deskjet 1220c). I just purchased the Hawking HPS1U print server for my network. The idea was to be able to print from all 5 systems (OSX-WinXP alike). There are a couple problems with the device, I wont go into all of them, but the deal is that it doesn't work with my Macs quite right and after some googling, I come to find the device ***** across the board. So suffice it to say, its getting returned.
I was wondering if any of you are using or know of a network print server that's OSX and Windows friendly that works well and is in the $50-$60 range? I've seen a couple, and I'm willing to give them a shot, but I figured if anyone knew of one that was working for them and what not, that would be even better.
    Thanks!
    Rob

    Hi Rob,
Out of the 30 or so print servers that have been discussed here on Apple Discussions, only one was not compatible with OS X, because it really wasn't network standards compliant. OS X is fully network standards compliant.
The real problem, Rob, is that Many Many non-postscript printers don't have drivers that allow full use of OS X's CUPS system (which is what makes OS X standards compliant). Your 1220C has a Gimp-Print (CUPS) driver available on OS X, so that's not a problem for you. The Hawking does work with OS X and a CUPS driver.
I don't know why Apple has made zero effort to explain how to use the network print protocols, but they haven't. For example, the protocol standards for LPD and IPP require use of a queue name as part of the setup, to distinguish among the many print queues that are possible on one "server." This is entered automatically by the setup software provided for Windows, so users are mostly unaware that they must read through the manual for a print server and find the queue name to enter into Printer Setup on OS X.
Even Dlink print servers (Dlink has overt anti-Mac policies), because they follow the standards, will work with OS X.
    I hope this helps.
