Network Refresh on Lion?

One of the more common hassles I deal with in Lion is the very sluggish network refresh.
I'm on a medium-sized network composed mainly of OSX machines, and sometimes one of them will reboot and come back with a different IP address. When this happens it will take an excessive amount of time for Finder to update the new computer address on the "Shared" section.
Can't this be done manually? How come there's no option to simply refresh all network assets?

I have the same issue with my 2013 Mac Mini Server (top of the line specs, 16GB RAM, etc) over a GIG-E local network directly connected to the same switch. I've tried different cables and ports to ensure it's not a network issue. Ironically enough, I get a solid connection with the Windows RDP client on my laptop to a Windows VM running on that same server; but when I try to directly connect via ARD, I get the slow refresh / blocked appearance you see in the attached screenshot.

  • Losing network connection in Lion.

I have noticed that in the past couple of days my network connection seems to go down for no apparent reason.  I have to reboot iMac to get network connecitivity.  I have my iMac hard wired to Linksys router.  My network is not down since my iphone can connect wirelessly as well as my Macbook.  I was wondering if there was a way to troubleshoot the issue.  Would there be a log of any kind that I could look at in order to see what might be the culprit? What steps should I be taking to troubleshoot issue?
Thanks and I look forward to your reply.

I am experiencing the same issue on my 27' iMac (2011).  Connections to shares get dropped often.  I can reconnect sometimes, but others I have to restart AirPort.  This is a major issue that is affecting my productivity.
Lion is not the OS I would have come to expect from Apple...far too many bugs.  And to add insult to injury, Apple is silent and no patches are forthcoming?!
I guess their organization are too tied up patent trolling Android phone manufacturers and Google to insure quality gets out the door.

  • VNC: no screen refresh controlling Lion Server

    Hello all.
I have a Mac Mini running Lion Server. It shares a monitor with a PC using an IOGear DVI KVM switch.
Usually I can use VNC remotely to control the Mac Mini when it is connected to the KVM switch.
However sometimes I need to grab the cables from the Mac Mini (USB and monitor) and plug them into a local laptop so I can use the monitor.
When I'm doing this and try to connect to the Mac Mini via VNC, all I get is a black screen, sometimes with a little square that shows the underlying desktop.
No matter what I do through VNC (or ARD for that matter), I cannot get the Mac Mini's screen to refresh, making it impossible to use a remote connection.
This condition goes away once the monitor and USB cables are plugged back in to the Mac Mini.
Any ideas whether this is a local problem with Lion? Can it be resolved through some configuration change?
    Thanks

Screen sharing is broken for me as well, trying to access a mac mini server (was snow leopard - is now Lion) from an iMac using the Lion server admin tools. It says "Connecting to "192.168.1.7"" but never connects.
SSH connects though so perhaps you can wrestle control of the server using the terminal.
I can't use the machine locally, the keyboard and mouse are unresponsive and there is no hdmi output to the Sony Bravia that its connected to.
I'm pretty close to doing a full re-install but I need to track down some urls posted on one of the blogs that the server was running first.

  • How to mount network share on lion permanently

I want to know how to mount a network share from my NAS on mountian lion.
I have seen and tried the suggestions about using command+k or the "go connect to server" and mounting that way so the password for the share is put into the keychain, then dragging the now mounted share to the system preferences user login items.
However this isn't satisfactory. It causes windows to pop up for each share that I have when logging in.
What I Want is for the share to appear as a mounted hard drive in the left navigation column of the finder window. I'd also like to be able to make a shortcut to the share on my desktop (or put it in my dock bar). If it shows up under devices that is perfection okay too, just so it's there somewhere logical.
The pop up windows simply clutter up the desktop, and if they are closed, then the share is closed too, and then there is a manual process of having to use the very tedious command+k or go connect to server method to connect again.
I need them to be able to click and open the share. I don't need them wasting time putting in share paswords and the link over and over.. the share should just be there for them as they work through the day. And if they close the folder/window, then it should be easy to get back to it.
This is possible on windows and I want these mounts to work the same way.
    note: my NAS uses smb

That should work. You could try deleting the passwords in Keychain associated with it and try it again.
    Another route: Create Applescript:
Select the network drive and get info on it. Copy the server address. Open up Applescript Editor in the Utilities folder and create a new script. Type in mount volume, add space, "paste server address within quotations", and save as application to your documents. Run it from within applescript editor to verify it works. When it asks for a passwork, save it in Keychain.
Under system preferences/accounts/login items, click the + sign to add and select the saved application.

  • Network slowness in lion 10.7.2

I am having network slowness ever since upgrading to Lion 10.7.2. Nothing in my setup has changed. I used to get around 10 Mbps on my DSL router, now I get about 6 Mbps. I checked the router, the signal coming in to it is the same strength, 12 Mbps. Anyone have any ideas?

I use the word "Excessive" because when I boot from an external drive, where I have Snow Leapord installed, and open the same links, I don't have the list of ports and I never lose any with a "server not responding" error.  The log in VirusBarrier doesn't show the time of the connections or how long they remain open.  Not sure where I could get that information.
Not sure if a Netstat reading from the Network Utility helps with any info.
The clean install of the Mac OS 10.7.2 on a seperate partition yielded the same results.

  • Unable to connect to new wireless network in Mountain Lion with Photosmart C4780

I have a Photosmart C4780 and have just upgraded my imac to Mountain Lion. HP are not providing new drivers for my printer as they say it will work with Mountain Lion. I have downloaded software updates. However, I have just changed my wireless network as I have a new broadband provider but am unable to connect to it. My problem is that the set up assistant software provided which I used originally to set up does not work with Mountain Lion.
    Any ideas please?

I have solved my problem, I've bought an Epson. It works perfectly. If HP can treat their customers with such disinterest and contempt I don't want to give them my money.

  • "Save" not working on network drives in Lion?

Hey everyone. Ran into an odd issue yesterday.
We have a user at one of our graphics locations that recently upgraded to a new iMac with 10.7 since her old machine died. They have multiple network drives that they use. These are windows 2003 R2 servers.
On 10.6 if they had a PDF open in Acrobat or a Quark job open (one that they opened from the server)... they could just do a command + s and save the file to the same location. Now, when they do a command + s it brings up the save as window and they have to navigate back to the folder where the original file was stored. In some instances, there are so many jobs and multiple versions of the job for a customer, that can take a long time to navigate back.
Is there a quick setting to turn this off or is this something new that was implemented in 10.7 that they need to deal with?

I'm afraid you hit it on the head.  This is indeed one of the "new features" in the Lion version of OS X.  I do not personally know of a workaround for this.
    Hope this helps

  • Can't search network shares in Lion

We've got several Macs that connect to a Windows Server 2003 network share. I've tried connecting via cifs and smb I still can't search folders on the network share. Browsing and pulling files over to the Mac work fine. This happens with all the Macs that are using Lion. It worked perfectly on Snow Leopard. Any tips on how to get this working?

This has been a confirmed issue/feature with Lion. There is a long discussion going on since months in a parallel discussion:

  • Using Juniper Network Connect with Lion

Has anyone had an luck using Network Connect to connect to a Juniper VPN with Lion? When I try to connect to secure network using Safari, Network Connect does not install and launch.

What version of Juniper are you folks running?  We are still on 6.x (I'll have to check on what X is, I think its 5)
I enabled the java "enable applet plug-in and web sstart applications" and it still gets stuck on our host checker screen.   I set the developer Safari 5.0.6 and it actually gets past host checker, but does not present an option for network connect.
This tells me that host checker is running but no longer seeing what it needs to see (?) for the network connect option to be presented.   I was told by Juniper that an update needs to happen but it won't be availble until September.
Can someone verify they can actually get a network connect session working using Lion and safari 5.1 and how they got it to work, and what version of Juniper they are on?
If we need to get to 7.x we can do it on a test box but moving production there will take a good long time.   We *just* enabled the Mac VPN service at our company, and now those upgrading to Lion are finding themselves once again without VPN capabilities.    This is a real problem as we don't control weather they upgrade or not, and everyone wants to get to the latest OS.
Juniper is on its last legs at our company.  This is probably the straw... they should have had this tested by now.

  • Trouble searching network folders in Lion

I'm having trouble searching my work network folders now that I have installed Lion. It is a windows network and snow leopard was always slow to come up with results but I always knew it was working when the little spinner showed up in the bottom right corner. In lion when I type in a seach term in finder, it shows me nothing and there is no indication it is doing anything, even when I know the file is already there. It seaches my hard drive very fast as that is indexed.

We're having this exact same problem.
Shared files on a Windows server are not being searched by Lion. It was perfectly fine pre-Lion but now nothing is showing up in search results (even files I know are there).
We need a fix for this as soon as possible.

  • WHY cant I print on a NETWORK with MOUNTAIN LION??

I am NOT able to print ANYWHERE Across a network whether to a mac or pc on the network......
Direct conneciton via USB is fine.

Well...before installing Mountain Lion...had no issues.  Always asking for Password confirmation now and no passwords work.

  • Constant "network activity" in Lion, with NO internet connection

       Hey all,
I had searched and read a number of entries similar to this, but never a solution from anyone yet and unsure if someone has experienced this specifically.
I was doing some computer house cleaning and noticed that I had this constant Network Activity happening to the sum of 3-4KB/sec, all day long, regardless.
    Switched off wifi...still there.
    Rebooted.....still there.
Disconnected all devices, no wifi, no nothing....still there.
    No programs running....still there.
    Repaired permissions...still there.
    Checked Firewall....still there.
    Sharing turned off....still there.
    Printer sharing off....still there.
Checked and eliminated any start-up programs....still there.
Booted with Snow Leopard drive,(it is only the OS), and noticed NO network activity.
Installed Little Snitch, and honestly have no idea what it is telling me.
So, with a totally cut off Macbook Pro, with no programs running at all, and nothing I can see running in the back ground, no LAN or other sharing or networks....why would there be an unending 3-4KB/sec activity, but none at all in Snow Leopard?  Somewhere I have something installed, or a malware program, or something hitting the network regardless of if it is accessible or not.
    Anyone any guesses?
Running the last version of Lion, 10.7.5
    Thanks all.

Can't believe no one has experienced this?
If anyone could, take a look at your own Activity Monitor and post if you are NOT having this issue in Lion.
Here is a screen shot of AM and the typical constant 3KB/sec in/out.  I know it seems like nothing just idol chatter, but it is constant, as in all day long, no matter what.  Something seems very not right about that function.
Thanks all, any feed back is appreciated.

  • Unable to share files over the local network, OS X Lion

About two weeks ago, my coworker and I realized that we were no longer able to share files over the local network. We have not made any changes to our preference settings. We are able to access FileMaker Pro databases files located on another computer in our office via the network, but we are unable to access any other files by trying to login to the computer remotely. We also have internet access. I am able to login to each of our work computers form home, but not from the office. I'm am not sure what has changed, but it is important that we have the ability to share files at work. Can you give me directions on how to fix our problem. Thanks!
    Debbie Roberts

I had this problem when I first setup my Mac. One thing I know is that File Sharing in System Preferences doesn't necessarily need to be on, because iTunes does all of the networking itself.
I know that you've checked and checked again on the firewall, but what I did was turn the firewall on. In the list of ALLOW, there should be a line that is labeled iTunes Music Sharing. Check it. It was the magic link, and all of my iTunes libraries on the three computers in the house (two Windows, one my Mac) could "see" each other.
Turning on the firewall might seem strange, but it worked for me.
    I hope this helps.
