Network running, Safari and Firefox not...

Hello.
I have a Mac Pro with 2x2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor and 3 GB of memory. I'm running OS X 10.6 and have almost 80 Gigs of free space.
A couple of days ago I started having problems with my internet being extremely slow. That has now transformed to no internet access at all, either with Safari or Firefox. Both apps will start, but neither will get past the initial load screen anymore.
I am connected to a Netgear wireless router via an ethernet cable. The router registers my computer is there, and is giving no problems to the two wireless laptops, or the other desktop (which is also connected via ethernet cable) in the house. The ethernet cable is connected to my #1 port, and the Ethernet 1 network on my computer says its status is "Connected." When I run diagnostics on that network it says it is connected to the internet is working fine. I have tried switching ports, but when I put the cable in Ethernet 2, the computer recieves no signal whatsoever.
I have emptied all my cache files, run network diagnostics, have Verified and Repaired Disk Permissions, and have reset Safari a number of times. I have tried creating new networks, and have reset the router itself. I'm afraid I am completely at a loss. The rest of my computer is running fine, but Safari and Firefox will not load, regardless of the network's claim to be connected and running smoothly.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

3GB and 80GB hard drive space: low amount of RAM but should be able to 'run' Mac OS. However 10% free of 640GB hard drive, so you do have what I call over loaded hard drive. Move files off to 2nd drive.
Make sure your modem is behind a surge protector, and that the ethernet out, also passes through a protector to prevent too much amp going into ethernet port.
I'd do a quick install of OS X (10.5.8 or 10.6.1) and leave it there with an empty new test user account.

Safari and Firefox are now selectively not loading certain pages. Sites like penny-arcade.com and staffingnow.com give me a ...

I've tried loading them on my girlfriend's pc and they load up fine.
    Any ideas?

Having the same problem here, only I dont have firefox. Safari refuses to load my webpage www.epicvideo.com.au yet any other computer can access it. I have another site, with the same server, on a similar but cheaper plan, that loads every time.
I have no problems with download speeds, but from reading discussions, some individual sites, hand-picked by Safari, refuse to load. My business website is the only site Safari wont load - I get the error "Bad Request (Invalid Hostname)" - frustrating when running a business!!!!
Ive done it all to, emptied the cache, reset safari, deleted all my book marks (yay), turned off my modem, restarted my server, spoken to tech staff at my STMP and website server... even Mac Heads at Telstra... no answers.
Lastly, im finding discussions not helping too much either, cause im just deleting files and changing settings etc - something that will surely cause me more grief!!

  • Safari and Firefox not loading images

Recently I worked on somebody's MacBook Pro computer (a few months old but software is kept up to date) but I couldn't figure out why Safari and Firefox often would not show images. This person also has a desktop PC computer with the same problem in Internet Explorer. The mac laptop is connected to the internet via wireless and the desktop is wired to a Netgear router. The router is connected to a Motorolla Surfboard 5100 cable modem. The problem started about on the 16th of March. When I tried to open a page in Safari often half of the pictures did not show. In Firefox when I clicked the broken picture icon and selected 'show picture' then it will load. Also, in both browers, clicking refresh will usually, but not always, reload everything correctly. Clicking refresh does the same on the PC in Internet Explorer.
Safari showed on the status bar there were errors on the page so I opened the Activity window. It said 'failed to connect' or something like that (I don't have the computer in front of me) for the images that did not load. Oddly, not all the images from the same site fail to load. Some will load but others won't. This happened with most sites and it appears to be random.
I opened a terminal window and typed netstat. With no browser running there were still several connections. I'm not sure if that matters on a Mac in OS X. On a windows computer if there are several connections and no programs are open then there may be a problem with malware.
It is possible the problem with images not loading has nothing to do with the Mac or Safari since we are having the same problem with the PC. The view images option in all 3 browsers is checked. I tried taking the router out and connecting only the PC to the cable modem. I tried unplugging and replugging all the ethernet cables. The owner of the computers spent a few hours on the phone with her internet provider. In the end they couldn't find what was causing the problem and tech support told her the internet was slow sometimes. We have the same internet provider and I'm having no problems with images on the same sites I viewed on her computer.
    Any ideas?

Before somebody asks- yes, I tried clearing the cache

  • Safari and firefox not opening

    Hello,
Right now i am using the internet explorer that comes with the 10.3.9 mac.
the 10.3.9 mac is what i am using and i have both safari and the old version of firefox (3.0) downloaded.
if i try opening either safari or firefox they will bounce once then stay unopened...
    what should i do?
(once again this is a 10.3.9 mac so i can not download the newer stuff... also it is not leapord)

    Hello asmith17,
First of all, Welcome to the Apple Discussion forums!
the 10.3.9 mac is what i am using and i have both safari and the old version of firefox (3.0) downloaded
I think therein lies the problem.
I think the Firefox max version compatible with 10.3.9 Panther is Firefox v.2. And if you have downloaded a later version of Safari than version 1.3.2 then you are trying to use an unsupported version for Panther.
Try using Camino 1.6.8. It's about the best you can do now with Panther 10.3.9. You will have to upgrade the OS to use any of the more modern versions of the browsers.

  • Safari (and Firefox) not allowing Netflix website to work

All of a sudden (about a week ago), when I went to watch a movie on Netflix, the website wouldn't work and came up with an error. I have never seen this before and I really don't know where to go from here. The error message reads:
    HTTP Status 500
    Type: Status report
Description: The server encountered an internal error () that prevented it from fulfilling this request.
    Apache Tomcat/6.0.10
I have no idea what this means or how i can fix it. I already called Netflix and they assured me that it had nothing to do with them, but it was my computer/server/browser having the issues. I have also tried to access the Netflix website on Firefox and it doesn't work on there either. I haven't changed anything on my network settings recently either. Please help! I miss my Netflix :/

ok, so let's try to see what the problem is
Look in Applications/Utilities/ for an app named Network Utility & open it up.
Choose the Traceroute tab & paste in netflix.com
you will get a result like the following - paste yours here & maybe it'll show us where things get hung up.

  • Command + R (Refresh) not working in Safari and Firefox need Help!

I been having trouble with Command + R (Refresh) in Safari and Firefox for a while, I used to have a MBP 2006 intel 2.4 running Leopard when the problem started, but since I was planning to change to a new computer I didn't pay much attention.
Recently I got a MBP w/ Retina and migrated the info from my old Mac to the new one, and it seem like the Command + R problem to refresh in Safari and Firefox has been brought with the migration.
Another pointer is that I have my mac setup in Spanish although it was setup in English before. This does not seem to be the problem.
Any Ideas on how can I solve this?
    Than in advance.

Recently Safari started slowing and presenting the infamous spinning wheel of death whenever page has anything flash in it. Since many pages have ads coming in on flash many pages are effected. I almost thought that I had a virus on machine, being a PC guy for 20 plus year prior you can get, pun intended, flashbacks of deadly blue screen etc. Was happening on both my machines readily apparent on homepage msnbc and the like. I cleared caches etc etc infinitum thought I was back on Windows for a minute. I know from listening to various Mac tech shows on twit.tv that Apple apparently is not fond of flash programming as evidenced that flash not on Itouch or Ipad. But what, trying to kil it on regular machines?
When I first came to apple a couple years ago I was using Google Chrome browser on MSFT macines and loved it but atthe time Chrom did not make Mac version. I used Safari and was happy enough UNTIL LATELY with it not to bother with other browsers. NO MORE, so went hunting and happily found that Chrome for Mac available. AMAZINGLY no problems so far msnbc loads, without exaggeration, TEN times faster than on safari, no spiining wheels of death EVERYTHING faster like someone gave my Mac's a B12 shot and restored them to how they used to be. Easily transferred all favorites over simple import.
So far only down side I have found was that bank statement pdf downloads and the like that Safari had bottom screen popup to one click download not on Chrome and print to pdf doesn't seem to do it right so far but I amstill playing. So when I do bank statements I fire up Sarari and suffer the speed.
There is no reason for this APPLE!!! If you are not going to have Safari be the best browser out there for a mac then you should dump it and recommend sometghign else. Please don;t be like MSFT and Internet Explorer junk!

  • Swf runs at wrong frames per second in Safari and Firefox on Mac, but works good in Chrome

Has anyone had this issue? I have a swf that plays at 30 fps.  It works fine in Chrome on the Mac, but in Safari and Firefox it runs at around 53 fps.  I'm even setting the frameRate of the stage (stage.frameRate = 30).
    any ideas?
    Thanks!

Hi stantony1, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Wow, great work so far!

Hopefully way under, like under 60°C.?

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Does ȃfari crash it in Safe Mode???
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below.

  • Javascript not working in Safari and Firefox

in stead of rendering the html generated by javascript, the html code itself is displayed in both Safari and Firefox.
The strange thing is that this is only for one of my accounts. This account was transferred using the migration tool from my previous computer, where I also had this problem.
A brand new generated user account does not show this problem.

    HI,
    In the affected account...
From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences then select the Security tab.
Make sure: Enable plug-ins and Enable Java and Enable JavaScript are selected.
Since you are running Snow Leopard, make sure Safari is running in 32-bit mode, not 64. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) *make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.*
    Relaunch Safari.

  • Safari and Firefox do not open search engines

I have an IMac 8.1, with OS 10.5.8.  Recently, our internet browser programs (safari and firefox) will not open any search engine (google, bing or yahoo).  However, I am able to navigate to web-sites that I manually type in (e.g., www.cnn.com). Does anyone know what the cause, and fix, to this issue?  Also, this behavior did coincide with a recent update to our Intego Antivirus software, but I think this is unrelated.
Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks,

Also, this behavior did coincide with a recent update to our Intego Antivirus software, but I think this is unrelated
Maybe not. Most, if not almost all, anti-virus software interferes with OS X and is not required.
    Try installing Glims:
If you want to fix your Google search to a specific Google location, I recommend that you download and install the free plug-in Glims:
    http://www.machangout.com/
which not only does that but much more equally useful stuff! Such as enabling Safari to run full-screen, and more.)
(It adds items to Safari Preferences).
Not only does it already list a number of search engines and regions, but you can also add any other search engine not already listed in Glims by using the method described here:
    http://www.machangout.com/tutorials/addsearchengine
Just enter the name you give the search engine in the name field, and the URL for it in the Query URL field.

If you use Lion, go to Applications/ Mission Control and, if you have more Desktops, as attached, it means you have more, and you must select the one you need for a certain app. If default settings has not changed, this is Control with left / right arrow
If in Snow Leopard and earlier, you have these settings in System Preferences only. In Lion, you also have some settings in Sys Prefs.

  • Shortcuts not working on Safari and Firefox

I just upgraded to Yosemite and have the following problem: no shortcuts for menu commands work anymore on Safari or Firefox. Simple test: start Safari and click cmd-Q to quit. Normally it should just quit. on my Macbook it doesn't. On Firefox, the menu bar flashes once, but that's about it.
    A few facts:
Macbook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013)
Mac OS 10.10 installed and running
Both, Safari and Firefox, are upgraded to the latest versions.
    No keyboard additions installed
    Swiss keyboard installed
    Nothing changed regarding keyboard preferences
Anybody else experiencing the same or has any idea, how to fix it?
    TIA

Problem solved. It all had to do with the primary language (NOT the keyboard) set to Swiss German, instead of just German. Seems a bug to me, but at least I have a workaround.

  • Fonts Do Not Display Correctly in Safari and Firefox

Certain fonts do not display smoothly in Safari and Firefox. They appear to have little pieces of the letters missing. I'm sure others have experienced this problem before but I could not find how to fix this. On the Apple Discussions the fonts look fine... on Google for example, they look messed up. I do not know specifically which font(s) are displayed weird but it happens frequently. This happens in Safari and Firefox on my MacPro and MacBookPro. Is there a setting to fix this?
    Thanks,
    -flash

Hello Flash, welcome to Apple discussions; )
Look for Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic Fonts, if you have them,
they can be the usual suspects.
Check the Text encoding in both Safari & FF, under the "View" menu.
In System preferences-> Personal (top section) in Appearance tab->
on the last portion of the panel Font smoothing Style: set that to Automatic
If those don't help, see this users tip excellent article Kurt Lang's ~ Font Management in Mac OS X
Look into this application to find any corrupt font[s]Font Finagler
Good luck, let us know how you fare.
